We investigate Eigen's model for the evolution of the genetic code of microorganisms using a novel method based on population dynamics analysis. This model, for a given number of offspring, determines long-term survival as a function of the "genetic" information length and copy error probability. There exists a maximum threshold for the quantity of information that can be consistently preserved through the process of evolution within a population of perfectly replicating sequences, meaning no errors are allowed. With our formula, we expand upon the traditional error threshold formula of Eigen's theory and introduce a new expression for general cases where the self-reproduction process allows up to any integer number of copying errors per digit per replication step.

Microbial contamination poses a threat to both the preservation of library and archival collections and the health of staff and users. This study investigated the microbial communities and potential health risks associated with the UNESCO-classified Norwegian Sea Trade Archive (NSTA) collection exhibiting visible microbial colonization and staff health concerns. Dust samples from book surfaces and the storage environment were analysed using culturing methods, qPCR, Next Generation Sequencing, and mycotoxin, cytotoxicity and azole resistance assays. Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., and Cladosporium sp. were the most common fungi identified, with some potentially toxic species like Stachybotrys sp., Toxicladosporium sp. and Aspergillus section Fumigati. Fungal resistance to azoles was not detected. Only one mycotoxin, sterigmatocystin, was found in a heavily contaminated book. Dust extracts from books exhibited moderate to high cytotoxicity on human lung cells, suggesting a potential respiratory risk. The collection had higher contamination levels compared to the storage environment, likely due to improved storage conditions. Even though, overall low contamination levels were obtained, which might be underestimated due to the presence of salt (from cod preservation) that could have interfered with the analyses. This study underlines the importance of monitoring microbial communities and implementing proper storage measures to safeguard cultural heritage and staff well-being.

This work investigates the impact of feeder bidirectional active power flow on the operation of two cascaded step voltage regulators (SVRs) located at a 34.5 kV rural distribution feeder. It shows that, when active power flow reversal is possible both by network reconfiguration and by high penetration levels of distributed generation (DG), typical SVR control mode settings are unable to prevent the occurrence of runaway condition, a phenomenon characterized by loss of SVR voltage control capabilities. Such developments are the basis for a DG pre-dispatch control strategy that aims to avoid the adverse effects of the described power flow reversal scenarios, as well as to ensure reliable operation of the utility distribution network.

In this work, we investigate the representative case of the homometallic Co ludwigite Co$^{2+}_2$Co$^{3+}$O$_2$BO$_3$ ($Pbam$ space group) with four distinct Co crystallographic sites [$M1$-$M4$] surrounded by oxygen octahedra. The mixed-valent character of the Co ions up to at least $T=873$ K is verified through x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments. Single crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) confirm that the Co ions at the $M4$ site are much smaller than the others at low temperatures, consistent with a Co$^{3+}$ oxidation state at $M4$ and Co$^{2+}$ at the remaining sites. The size difference between the Co ions in the $M4$ and $M2$ sites is continuously reduced upon warming above $\approx 370$ K, indicating a gradual charge redistribution within the $M4$-$M2$-$M4$ (424) ladder in the average structure. An increasing structural disorder, is noted above $\approx 370$ K, The local Co-O distance distribution, revealed by Co $K$-edge Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) data and analyzed with an evolutionary algorithm method, is similar to that inferred from the XRD crystal structure below $\approx 370$ K. At higher temperatures, the local Co-O distance distribution remains similar to that found at low temperatures, at variance with the average crystal structure obtained with XRD. We conclude that the oxidation states Co$^{2+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ are instantaneously well defined in a local atomic level at all temperatures, however the thermal energy promotes local defects in the charge-ordered configuration of the 424 ladders upon warming. These defects coalesce into a phase-segregated state within a narrow temperature interval ($475< T < 495$ K). Finally, a transition at $\approx 500$ K revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the iron ludwigite Fe$_3$O$_2$BO$_3$ is discussed.

The study of populations subject to the phenomenon of loss and fragmentation of habitat, transforming continuous areas into small ones, usually surrounded by anthropogenic matrices, has been the focus of many researches within the scope of conservation. The objective of this study was to develop a computer model by introducing modifications to the renowned Penna Model for biological aging, in order to evaluate the behavior of populations subjected to the effects of fragmented environments. As an object of study, it was used biological data of the robust tufted capuchin (Sapajus robustus), an endangered primate species whose geographical distribution within the Atlantic Rain Forest is part of the backdrop of intense habitat fragmentation. The simulations showed the expected behavior based on the three main aspects that affects populations under intense habitat fragmentation: the population density, area and conformation of the fragments and deleterious effects due the low genetic variability in small and isolated populations. The model showed itself suitable to describe changes in viability and population dynamics of the species crested capuchin considering critical levels of survival in a fragmented environment and also, actions in order to preserve the species should be focused not only on increasing available area but also in dispersion dynamics.

The paper uses such model in an estimation theory context to develop an exact gradient-type algorithm, from which adaptive algorithms such as the least mean squares (LMS) filter and its data-reuse version---the TRUE-LMS---are derived. Stability and convergence issues are addressed. The algorithms are then tested in simulations, which show its good performance when compared to other nonlinear processing algorithms in the literature.

Nonlinear adaptive filtering allows for modeling of some additional aspects of a general system and usually relies on highly complex algorithms, such as those based on the Volterra series. Through the use of the Kronecker product and some basic facts of tensor algebra, we propose a simple model of nonlinearity, one that can be interpreted as a product of the outputs of K FIR linear filters, and compute its cost function together with its gradient, which allows for some analysis of the optimization problem. We use these results it in a stochastic gradient framework, from which we derive an LMS-like algorithm and investigate the problems of multi-modality in the mean-square error surface and the choice of adequate initial conditions. Its computational complexity is calculated. The new algorithm is tested in a system identification setup and is compared with other polynomial algorithms from the literature, presenting favorable convergence and/or computational complexity.

The generalized extreme value distribution and its particular case, the Gumbel extreme value distribution, are widely applied for extreme value analysis. The Gumbel distribution has certain drawbacks because it is a non-heavy-tailed distribution and is characterized by constant skewness and kurtosis. The generalized extreme value distribution is frequently used in this context because it encompasses the three possible limiting distributions for a normalized maximum of infinite samples of independent and identically distributed observations. However, the generalized extreme value distribution might not be a suitable model when each observed maximum does not come from a large number of observations. Hence, other forms of generalizations of the Gumbel distribution might be preferable. Our goal is to collect in the present literature the distributions that contain the Gumbel distribution embedded in them and to identify those that have flexible skewness and kurtosis, are heavy-tailed and could be competitive with the generalized extreme value distribution. The generalizations of the Gumbel distribution are described and compared using an application to a wind speed data set and Monte Carlo simulations. We show that some distributions suffer from overparameterization and coincide with other generalized Gumbel distributions with a smaller number of parameters, i.e., are non-identifiable. Our study suggests that the generalized extreme value distribution and a mixture of two extreme value distributions should be considered in practical applications.

We derive adjusted signed likelihood ratio statistics for a general class of extreme value regression models. The adjustments reduce the error in the standard normal approximation to the distribution of the signed likelihood ratio statistic. We use Monte Carlo simulations to compare the finite-sample performance of the different tests. Our simulations suggest that the signed likelihood ratio test tends to be liberal when the sample size is not large, and that the adjustments are effective in shrinking the size distortion. The quantum mechanical approach to the well known prisoners dilemma, one of the basic examples to illustrate the concepts of Game Theory, is implemented with a classical optical resource, nonquantum entanglement between spin and orbital degrees of freedom of laser modes. The concept of entanglement is crucial in the quantum version of the game, which brings novel features with a richer universe of strategies. As we show, this richness can be achieved in a quite unexpected context, namely that of paraxial spin-orbit modes in classical optics.

We deal with a general class of extreme-value regression models introduced by Barreto- Souza and Vasconcellos (2011). Our goal is to derive an adjusted likelihood ratio statistic that is approximately distributed as \c{hi}2 with a high degree of accuracy. Although the adjusted statistic requires more computational effort than its unadjusted counterpart, it is shown that the adjustment term has a simple compact form that can be easily implemented in standard statistical software. Further, we compare the finite sample performance of the three classical tests (likelihood ratio, Wald, and score), the gradient test that has been recently proposed by Terrell (2002), and the adjusted likelihood ratio test obtained in this paper. Our simulations favor the latter. Applications of our results are presented. Key words: Extreme-value regression; Gradient test; Gumbel distribution; Likelihood ratio test; Nonlinear models; Score test; Small-sample adjustments; Wald test.

A combination of NIR photometry and spectroscopy data was used to obtain the distance of these two stars, with the method of spectroscopic parallax: IRS\,298 (O6\,{\sc V}, $3.35 \pm 0.61$\,kpc) and IRS\,339 (O9\,{\sc V}, $3.24 \pm 0.56$\,kpc). Adopting the average distance of $3.29 \pm 0.58$\,kpc and comparing the Lyman continuum luminosity of these stars with that required to account for the radio continuum flux of the H\,{\sc ii} region, we conclude that these two stars are the ionizing sources of GAL\,331.31-00.34. Young stellar objects (YSOs) were searched by using our NIR photometry and MIR data from the GLIMPSE survey. The analysis of NIR and MIR colour-colour diagrams resulted in 47 YSO candidates.
The GLIMPSE counterpart of IRAS\,16085-5138, which presents IRAS colour indices compatible with an ultra-compact H\,{\sc ii} region, has been identified. The analysis of its spectral energy distribution between 2 and $100\,μ$m revealed that this source shows a spectral index $α= 3.6$ between 2 and $25\,μ$m, which is typical of a YSO immersed in a protostellar envelope. Lower limits to the bolometric luminosity and the mass of the embedded protostar have been estimated as $L=7.7\times10^3L_{\sun}$ and $M = 10\,M_{\sun}$, respectively, which corresponds to a B0--B1\,{\sc V} ZAMS star.

It is linear with the temperature for overdoped compounds but it falls more quickly as the do** level decreases, and for weakly doped samples it has a minimum, increases like an insulator before it drops to zero at low temperatures. We show that this overall behavior can be explained by calculations using an electronic phase segregation into two main component phases with low and high densities. The total resistivity is calculated by the various contributions through several random picking processes of the local resistivities and using the Random Resistor Network approach.

To satisfy covariance arguments time-varying gravitational and cosmological term are introduced. The ``Einstein's equation'' for this special evolution for the Universe are written down where expansion, rotation and closed time-like curves appear as a combination between standard model, Gödel and steady state properties are obtained.

Quantum Gravity in D=5 Dimensions
Authors:
Carlos Pinheiro,
F. C. Khanna
Abstract:
We propose a topological Chern-Simons term in D=5 dimensions coupled to Einstein Hilbert theory. Hartree approximation for topological Lagrangian and the Chern-Simons term in D=3 is considered. An effective model of Quantum Gravity in D=5 dimensions is presented here. The analysis of residues is considered and the unitarity is guaranteed at tree level. The propagator is ghost and tachyon free.

Abstract:
The existence of an electromagnectic field with parallel electric and magnetic components is readdressed in the presence of a gravitational field. A non-parallel solution is shown to exist. Next, we analyse the possibility of finding stationary gravitational waves in de nature. Finaly, We construct a D=4 effective quantum gravity model. Tree-level unitarity is verified.

Abstract:
A Maxwell-Chern-Simons field is minimally coupled to 3D-gravity. Feynman rules are written down and 1-loop corrections to the gauge-field self-energy are calculated. Transversality is verified and gauge-field dynamical mass generation does not take place.

Abstract:
The spin-projector operators for symmetric rank-2 tensors are reassessed in connection with the issue of topologically massive gravity. The original proposal by Barnes and Rivers is generalised to account for D-dimensional Einstein gravity and 3-dimensional Chern-Simons massive gravitation.
