Addressing environmental and atmospheric challenges for capturing high-precision thermal infrared data in the field of astro-ecology
Abstract: Using thermal infrared detectors mounted on drones, and applying techniques from astrophysics, we hope to support the field of conservation ecology by creating an automated pipeline for the detection and identification of certain endangered species and poachers from thermal infrared data. We test part of our system by attempting to detect simulated poachers in the field. Whilst we find that we can… ▽ More

Size and Density Evolution of a Single Microparticle Embedded in a Plasma
Abstract: This article presents two measurement techniques to determine the diameter of a single dust particle during plasma operation. Using long-distance microscopy (LDM), the particle is imaged from outside the plasma chamber. In combination with phase-resolved resonance measurements the development of the volume-averaged particle mass density is measured over several hours. The measurements show a signi… ▽ More

Magnetizing a complex plasma without a magnetic field
Abstract: We propose and demonstrate a concept that mimics the magnetization of the heavy dust particles in a complex plasma while leaving the properties of the light species practically unaffected. It makes use of the frictional coupling between a complex plasma and the neutral gas, which allows to transfer angular momentum from a rotating gas column to a well-controlled rotation of the dust cloud. This in… ▽ More

Wave spectra of 2D Yukawa solids and liquids in the presence of a magnetic field
Abstract: Thermally excited phonon spectra of 2D Yukawa solids and liquids in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied using computer simulations. Special attention is paid to the variation of wave spectra in terms of several key parameters, such as the strength of coupling, the screening parameter, and the intensity of the magnetic field. In addition, comparisons are made with several analy… ▽ More

Brownian Dynamics of charged particles in a constant magnetic field
Abstract: Numerical algorithms are proposed for simulating the Brownian dynamics of charged particles in an external magnetic field, taking into account the Brownian motion of charged particles, dam** effect and the effect of magnetic field self-consistently. Performance of these algorithms is tested in terms of their accuracy and long-time stability by using a three-dimensional Brownian oscillator mode… ▽ More

Wave spectra of 2D dusty plasma solids and liquids
Abstract: Brownian dynamics simulations were carried out to study wave spectra of two-dimensional dusty plasma liquids and solids for a wide range of wavelengths. The existence of a longitudinal dust thermal mode was confirmed in simulations, and a cutoff wavenumber in the transverse mode was measured. Dispersion relations, resulting from simulations, were compared with those from analytical theories, suc… ▽ More

Self-Diffusion in 2D Dusty Plasma Liquids: Numerical Simulation Results
Abstract: We perform Brownian dynamics simulations for studying the self-diffusion in two-dimensional (2D) dusty plasma liquids, in terms of both mean-square displacement and velocity autocorrelation function (VAF). Super-diffusion of charged dust particles has been observed to be most significant at infinitely small dam** rate $γ$ for intermediate coupling strength, where the long-time asymptotic behav… ▽ More

Heat conduction in 2D strongly-coupled dusty plasmas
Abstract: We perform non-equilibrium simulations to study heat conduction in two-dimensional strongly coupled dusty plasmas. Temperature gradients are established by heating one part of the otherwise equilibrium system to a higher temperature. Heat conductivity is measured directly from the stationary temperature profile and heat flux. Particular attention is paid to the influence of dam** effect on the… ▽ More

Probability of metastable configurations in spherical three-dimensional Yukawa crystals
Abstract: Recently the occurrence probabilities of ground- and metastable states of three-dimensional Yukawa clusters with 27 and 31 particles have been analyzed in dusty plasma experiments [Block et al., Physics of Plasmas 15, 040701 (2008)]. There it was found that, in many cases, the ground state appeared substantially less frequently than excited states. Here we analyze this question theoretically by… ▽ More

Existence and Vanishing of the Breathing Mode in Strongly Correlated Finite Systems
Abstract: One of the fundamental eigenmodes of finite interacting systems is the mode of {\em uniform radial expansion and contraction} -- the ``breathing'' mode (BM). Here we show in a general way that this mode exists only under special conditions: i) for harmonically trapped systems with interaction potentials of the form $1/r^γ$ $(γ\in\mathbb{R}_{\neq0})$ or $\log(r)$, or ii) for some systems with spe… ▽ More

Classical and quantum Coulomb crystals
Abstract: Strong correlation effects in classical and quantum plasmas are discussed. In particular, Coulomb (Wigner) crystallization phenomena are reviewed focusing on one-component non-neutral plasmas in traps and on macroscopic two-component neutral plasmas. The conditions for crystal formation in terms of critical values of the coupling parameters and the distance fluctuations and the phase diagram of… ▽ More

Ground state of a confined Yukawa plasma including correlation effects
Abstract: The ground state of an externally confined one-component Yukawa plasma is derived analytically using the local density approximation (LDA). In particular, the radial density profile is computed. The results are compared with the recently obtained mean-field (MF) density profile \cite{henning.pre06}. While the MF results are more accurate for weak screening, LDA with correlations included yields… ▽ More

Memory difference control of unknown unstable fixed points: Drifting parameter conditions and delayed measurement
Abstract: Difference control schemes for controlling unstable fixed points become important if the exact position of the fixed point is unavailable or moving due to drifting parameters. We propose a memory difference control method for stabilization of a priori unknown unstable fixed points by introducing a memory term. If the amplitude of the control applied in the previous time step is added to the pres… ▽ More

Ground state of a confined Yukawa plasma
Abstract: The ground state of an externally confined one-component Yukawa plasma is derived analytically. In particular, the radial density profile is computed. The results agree very well with computer simulations on three-dimensional spherical Coulomb crystals. We conclude in presenting an exact equation for the density distribution for a confinement potential of arbitrary geometry.

Structural properties of screened Coulomb balls
Abstract: Small three-dimensional strongly coupled charged particles in a spherical confinement potential arrange themselves in a nested shell structure. By means of experiments, computer simulations and theoretical analysis, it is shown that their structural properties depend on the type of interparticle forces. Continuous control of ionization wave chaos by spatially derived feedback signals
Abstract: In the positive column of a neon glow discharge, two different types of ionization waves occur simultaneously. The low-dimensional chaos arising from the nonlinear interaction between the two waves is controlled by a continuous feedback technique. The control strategy is derived from the time-delayed autosynchronization method. Two spatially displaced points of observation are used to obtain the… ▽ More
