We deal with a wide class of kinetic equations, $$ \big[ \partial_t + v\cdot\nabla_x\big] f = \mathcal{L}_v f. $$ Above, the diffusion term $\mathcal{L}_v$ is an integro-differential operator, whose nonnegative kernel is of fractional order $s\in(0,1)$ having merely measurable coefficients. Amongst other results, we are able to prove that nonnegative weak solutions $f$ do satisfy $$ \sup_{Q^-} f \ \leq \ c\inf_{Q^+} f, $$ where $Q^{\pm}$ are suitable slanted cylinders. No a-priori boundedness is assumed, as usually in the literature, since we are also able to prove a general interpolation inequality in turn giving local boundedness which is valid even for weak subsolutions with no sign assumptions.
To our knowledge, this is the very first time that a strong Harnack inequality is proven for kinetic integro-differential-type equations.
A new independent result, a Besicovitch-type covering argument for very general kinetic geometries, is also stated and proved.

We investigate some effects of the lack of compactness in the critical Sobolev embedding by proving that a famous conjecture of Brezis and Peletier \cite{BP89} does still hold in the Heisenberg framework: optimal functions for a natural subcritical approximations of the Sobolev quotient concentrate energy at exactly one point which is a critical point of the Robin function (i. e., the diagonal of the regular part of the Green function associated to the involved domain), in clear accordance with the underlying sub-Riemannian geometry. Consequently, a new suitable definition of domains geometrical regular near their characteristic set is introduced. In order to achieve the aforementioned result, we need to combine proper estimates and tools to attack the related CR Yamabe equation with novel feasible ingredients in PDEs and Calculus of Variations which also aim to constitute general independent results in the Heisenberg framework, as for instance a fine asymptotic control of the optimal functions via the Jerison and Lee extremals realizing the equality in the critical Sobolev inequality \cite{JL88}.

We consider equations whose diffusion part is a (possibly degenerate) integro-differential operator of differentiability order $s \in (0,1)$ and summability exponent $p\in (1,\infty)$. Amongst other results, we provide an explicit local boundedness estimate by combining together a suitable Sobolev embedding theorem and a fractional Caccioppoli-type inequality with tail. For this, we introduce in the kinetic framework a new definition of nonlocal tail of a function and of its related tail spaces, also by establishing some useful estimates for the tail of weak solutions. Armed with the aforementioned results we give a precise control of the long-range interactions arising from the nonlocal behaviour of the involved diffusion operator.

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented.
A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012.

We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C$_{22}$H$_{14}$) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the phonon peaks experimentally observed . Through a detailed analysis of the phonon eigenvectors, We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a \sim 20 % compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure. The Grueneisen parameter of the 1380 cm^{-1} a_1 Raman peak ($γ_p=0.1$) is much lower than the effective value ($γ_d=0.8$) due to K do**. This is an indication that the phonon softening in K doped samples is mainly due to charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling.

Bunch-by-bunch longitudinal diagnostics is a key issue of modern accelerators. To face up this challenging demand, tests of mid-IR compact uncooled photoconductive HgCdTe detectors have been recently performed at DAFNE. Different devices were used to monitor the emission of e- bunches. The first experiments allowed recording of 2.7 ns long e- bunches with a FWHM of a single pulse of about 600 ps. These results address the possibility to improve diagnostics at DAFNE and to this purpose an exit port on a bending magnet of the positron ring has been set-up. An HV chamber, hosting a gold-coated plane mirror that collects and deflects the radiation through a ZnSe window, is the front-end of this port. After the window, a simple optical layout in air allows focusing IR radiation on different detectors. The instrumentation will allow comparison in the sub-ns time domain between the two rings and to identify and characterize bunch instabilities. Moreover, to improve performances tests of new photovoltaic detectors with sub-ns response times are in progress. We will briefly summarize the actual status of the 3+L experiment and will discuss future applications of fast IR photovoltaic detectors and the development of fast IR array detectors.

The relation between the branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries of B --> K pi decays and the angle gamma of the CKM unitarity triangle is studied numerically in the general framework of the SU(3) approach, with minimal assumptions about the parameters not fixed by flavour-symmetry arguments. Experimental and theoretical uncertainties are subjected to a statistical treatment according to the Bayesian method. In this context, the experimental limits recently obtained by CLEO, BaBar and Belle for the direct CP asymmetries are translated into the bound |gamma - 90 deg| > 21 deg at the 95% C.L.. A detailed analysis is carried out to evaluate the conditions under which measurements of the CP averaged branching ratios may place a significant constraint on gamma. Predictions for the ratios of charged (R_c) and neutral (R_n) B --> K pi decays are also presented.

A complete review of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and of the experimental methods for their determination is presented. A critical analysis of the relevant experimental results, and in particular of the most recent ones, allows to improve the accuracies of all the matrix elements. A chi-square minimization with the three-family unitarity constraint on the CKM matrix is performed to test the current interpretation of the CP violating phenomena inside the Standard Model. A complete and unambiguous solution satisfying all the imposed constraints is found. As a by-product of the fit, the precision on the values of the matrix elements is further increased and it is possible to obtain estimates for the important CP violation observables $sin 2β$, $sin 2α$ and $γ$. Finally, an independent estimation of the CKM elements based on a Bayesian approach is performed. This complementary method constitutes a check of the results obtained, providing also the probability functions of the CKM elements and of the related quantities.
