Simple AH algebras with the same Elliott invariant and radius of comparison
Abstract: We construct an uncountable family of pairwise nonisomorphic AH algebras with the same Elliott invariant and same radius of comparison. They can be distinguished by a local radius of comparison function, naturally defined on the positive cone of the K_0 group.

The radius of comparison of $C (X)$
Abstract: Let X be a compact Hausdorff space. Then the radius of comparison rc ( C (X)) is related to the covering dimension dim (X) by rc ( C (X)) \geq [ dim (X) - 7 ] / 2. The commutant of L(H) in its ultrapower may or may not be trivial
Abstract: Kirchberg asked in 2004 whether the commutant of L(H)$ in its (norm) ultrapower is trivial. Assuming the Continnuum Hypothesis, we prove that the answer depends on the choice of the ultrafilter.

A direct proof of Z-stability for AH algebras of bounded topological dimension
Abstract: We prove that a unital simple approximately homogeneous (AH) C*-algebra with no dimension growth absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially without appealing to the classification theory of these algebras. Our main result continues to hold under the slightly weaker hypothesis of exponentially slow dimension growth.

Crossed products by finite group actions with the Rokhlin property
Abstract: We prove that a number of classes of separable unital C*-algebras are closed under crossed products by finite group actions with the Rokhlin property, including: (1) AI algebras, AT algebras, and related classes characterized by direct limit decompositions using semiprojective building blocks. (2) Simple unital AH algebras with slow dimension growth and real rank zero. (3) C*-algebras with… ▽ More

Cancellation for inclusions of C*-algebras of finite depth
Abstract: Let B be a unital C*-algebra, let A be a unital subalgebra, and let E be a conditional expectation from B to A with index-finite type and a quasi-basis of n elements. Then the topological stable rank satisfies \tsr (B) \leq \tsr (A) + n - 1. As an application, we show that if a unital inclusion A \subset B of C*-algebras has index-finite type and finite depth, and A is simple with stable rank on… ▽ More

Finite cyclic group actions with the tracial Rokhlin property
Abstract: We give examples of actions of Z/2Z on AF algebras and AT algebras which demonstrate the differences between the (strict) Rokhlin property and the tracial Rokhlin property, and between (strict) approximate representability and tracial approximate representability. Specific results include the following. We determine exactly when a product type action of Z/2Z on a UHF algebra has the tracial Rokh… ▽ More

Comments: AMSLaTeX; 28 pages. This paper replaces Sections 12 and 13 of the unpublished long preprint arXiv:math.OA/0306410. The treatment of product type examples has been systematized, discussion of approximate representability and tracial approximate representability has been added, and the examples with torsion in the K_0-group of the crossed product are entirely new

The structure of crossed products of irrational rotation algebras by finite subgroups of SL_2 (Z)
Abstract: Let F be a finite subgroup of SL_2 (Z) (necessarily isomorphic to one of Z/2Z, Z/3Z, Z/4Z, or Z/6Z), and let F act on the irrational rotational algebra A_θ via the restriction of the canonical action of SL_2 (Z). Then the crossed product of A_θ by F, and the fixed point algebra for the action of F on A_θ, are AF algebras. The same is true for the crossed product and fixed point algebra of the fl… ▽ More

Comments: AMSLaTeX; 43 pages. This paper is a greatly improved version of Sections 8 through 10 of the unpublished long preprint arXiv:math.OA/0306410. In particular, the conclusion that the crossed products and fixed point algebras for the actions of Z/3Z, Z/4Z, and Z/6Z on A_θ are AH algebras has been improved to state that they are AF algebras, and the ordered K-theory has been completely determined

The tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite groups on C*-algebras
Abstract: We define "tracial" analogs of the Rokhlin property for actions of finite groups, approximate representability of actions of finite abelian groups, and of approximate innerness. We prove four analogs of related "nontracial" results. First, the crossed product of an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra with tracial rank zero by an action of a finite group with the tracial Rokhl… ▽ More

Realization of a simple higher dimensional noncommutative torus as a transformation group C*-algebra
Abstract: Let $θ$ be a nondegenerate skew symmetric real $d$ by $d$ matrix, and let $A_θ$ be the corresponding simple higher dimensional noncommutative torus. Suppose that $d$ is odd, or that $d$ is greater or equal to 4 and the entries of $θ$ are not contained in a quadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. Banach Algebras and Rational Homotopy Theory
Abstract: Let $A$ be a unital commutative Banach algebra with maximal ideal space $X.$ We determine the rational H-type of the group $GL_n (A)$ of invertible n by n matrices with coefficients in A, in terms of the rational cohomology of $X.$ We also address an old problem of J. Furstenberg transformations on irrational rotation algebras
Abstract: We introduce a general class of automorphisms of rotation algebras, the noncommutative Furstenberg transformations. We prove that fully irrational noncommutative Furstenberg transformations have the tracial Rokhlin property, which is a strong form of outerness. We conclude that crossed products by these automorphisms have stable rank one, real rank zero, and order on projections determined by tr… ▽ More
