It is shown that the Kohler rule works for the transverse MR. The Kohler rule is also fulfilled in the case of longitudinal MR at a low reduced magnetic field. A sharp deviation of longitudinal MR curve for sample with low RRR from the Kohler prediction at high fields reveals its tendency to a sign change at higher magnetic fields. The Shubnikov de Haas quantum oscillations were observed and analyzed in both perpendicular and parallel configurations of the current and magnetic field in sample CoSi 1 with RRR 9.33 at low temperatures.

While FeGe and RhGe are single phase helimagnet and unconventional superconductor, respectively, an internal splitting of the crystallographic and magnetic states is found for intermediate compositions $x \in \left[0.2 - 0.9\right]$. A theoretical analysis of the stability of the two detected phases, together with the experimental data, indicate that this splitting preserves a common space group and occurs within single crystallites. Despite their apparent similarity, these two phases however display different magnetic structures, with distinct ferro- and helimagnetic character.

We have grown and characterized three samples of Co doped MnSi and studied their physical properties (magnetization and magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistance). All three samples show non-Fermi liquid physical properties. From literature data and current results follow that impurities (Co and Fe) eliminate the first order phase transition peaks and spread the fluctuation maxima in such a way that its low temperature part effectively reaches the zero temperature, where the fluctuations inevitably become quantum. The behavior of low temperature branches of the heat capacity of the samples suggests that a gradual transition from classical to quantum fluctuations can be described by a simple power function of temperature with the exponent less than one. The $dρ/dT$ data generally support this suggestion. The values of the heat capacity exponents immediately lead to the diverging ratio $C_p/T$ and hence to the diverging effective electron mass. We found out that at large concentration of the dopant there are no distinct phase transition points. What we observe is a cloud of the helical fluctuations spreading over a significant range of concentrations and temperatures, which become quantum close to 0~K.

The search and exploration of new materials not found in nature is one of modern trends in pure and applied chemistry. In the present work, we report on experimental and \textit{ab initio} density-functional study of the high-pressure-synthesized series of compounds Mn$_{1-x}$(Co,Rh)$_x$Ge. These high-pressure phases remain metastable at normal conditions, therewith they preserve their inherent noncentrosymmetric B20-type structure and chiral magnetism. Of particular interest in these two isovalent systems is the comparative analysis of the effect of $3d$ (Co) and $4d$ (Rh) substitution for Mn, since the $3d$ orbitals are characterized by higher localization and electron interaction than the $4d$ orbitals. The behavior of Mn$_{1-x}$(Co,Rh)$_x$Ge systems is traced as the concentration changes in the range $0 \leq x \leq 1$. We applied a sensitive experimental and theoretical technique which allowed to refine the shape of the temperature dependencies of magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and thereby provide a new and detailed magnetic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge. It is shown that both systems exhibit a helical magnetic ordering that very strongly depends on the composition $x$. However, the phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge differs from that of Mn$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Ge in that it is characterized by coexistence of two helices in particular regions of concentrations and temperatures.

We report on structural, magnetic and transport properties of a new set of the high-pressuresynthesized compounds Mn$_{1-x}$Rh$x$Ge ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) with the chiral magnetic ordering. The magnetic and transport properties depend substantially on the concentration of rhodium (x) and the pressure. The saturation magnetic moment corresponds to a known high-spin value for pristine MnGe (x = 0) and decreases almost linearly with increasing concentration $x$. In addition, XMCD spectra taken at 10 K and 2 T indicate magnetic polarization of the Rh 4d electron states and Ge $4p$ states, which decreases with $x$, too. In rhodium rich compounds ($x \geq 0.5$) the temperature of the magnetic ordering increases significantly with pressure, whereas in manganese rich compounds ($x < 0.5$) the temperature decreases. Three different tendencies are also found for several structural and transport properties. In the intermediate range ($0.3 \leq x \leq 0.7$) samples are semiconducting in the paramagnetic phase, but become metallic in the magnetically ordered state. We carried out ab initio density-functional calculations of Mn$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Ge at various concentrations $x$ and traced the evolution of electronic and magnetic properties. The calculation results are in good agreement with the measured magnetic moments and qualitatively explain the observed trends in transport properties.

As is shown the crossing points are not invariant in the extended range of magnetic field and should be viewed as a side effects of flattening and spreading out the fluctuation maxima or minima by magnetic field~\cite{Sti16}. In this paper we argue that rounded "hills" or "valleys" demonstrated by the heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, and elastic module are indications of a smeared second order phase transition, which is flattened and spread out by the application of a magnetic field. As a result, some of the curves which display a temperature dependence of the corresponding quantities cross almost at a single point. Thus, the Vollhardt crossing point should not be identified with any specific energy scale. The smeared phase transition in MnSi preceding the helical first order transition most probably corresponds to the planar ferromagnetic ordering, with a small or negligible correlation between planes. At lower temperatures, the system of ferromagnetic planes becomes correlated, acquiring a helical twist.

Thermal expansion and forced magnetostriction of MnSi were measured as a function of temperature down to 5 K and magnetic field to 3 T. The small length (volume) discontinuity at the magnetic phase transition in MnSi decreases with application of magnetic field to a value $ΔL/L \sim 10^{-7}$, and then suddenly the discontinuity seemingly jumps to zero. Thermal expansivity peaks strongly deteriorate with magnetic fields. No specific features identifying a tricritical point were observed. We propose that the Frenkel concept of heterophase fluctuations may be relevant in the current case. Therefore, we suggest that the magnetic phase transition in MnSi always remains first order at any temperature and magnetic field, but the transition is progressively smoothed by heterophase fluctuations. These results question the applicability of a model of a fluctuation-induced first order phase transition for MnSi. Probably a model of coupling of an order parameter with other degrees of freedom is more appropriate.

Specific heat data confirm the bulk nature of superconductivity in this ferromagnetic superconductor. The superconducting region forms a dome on the P-T diagram with a maximum of T$_c$ near 4 GPa. Ab initio simulations suggest that the observed weak magnetization emerges from the pronounced spin polarization with magnetic quadrupole and toroidal moments located at Rh and Ge sites.

The longitudinal and transverse ultrasound speeds and attenuation were measured in a MnSi single crystal in the temperature range of 2 - 40 K and magnetic fields to 7 Tesla. The magnetic phase diagram of MnSi in applied magnetic field appears to depend on the experimental setups, which is related to a difference in demagnetization factors arising due to the disc shape of the sample. The magnetic phase transition in MnSi in zero magnetic field is signified by a quasi discontinuity in the c11 elastic constant, which varies significantly with magnetic field. It is notable that the region where the c11 discontinuity almost vanishes closely corresponds to the extent of skyrmion phase along the magnetic to paramagnetic transition. This implies that the c11 elastic constant is almost continuous through the transition from the skyrmion to paramagnetic phases. A recovery of the discontinuity of c11 and enhanced sound absorption occur at the crossing of the phase transition line and the line of minima in c11. The powerful fluctuations at the minima of c11 make the mentioned crossing point similar to a critical end point, where a second order phase transition meets a first order one. The skyrmion domain in the case of a perpendicular setup with a smaller demagnetization factor has a reduced temperature range, which suggests that the magnetic field inhomogeneity plays an important role in the skyrmion occurrence and, hence, opens a way of skyrmion manipulation. The small anisotropy of the shear moduli in the (001) plane found in the parallel setup is most probably also caused by the magnetic field inhomogeneity, which distorts the hexagonal symmetry of the skyrmion crystal.

The specific heat, magnetization and thermal expansion of single crystals of antiferromagnetic insulator EuTe, measured at temperatures down to 2 K and in magnetic fields up to 90 kOe, demonstrate non trivial properties. The Neel temperature, being 9.8 K at H=0, decreases with magnetic field and tends to zero at 76 kOe, therefore forming a quantum critical point. The heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient reveal lambda-type anomalies at the second order magnetic phase transition at low magnetic fields, evolving to simple jumps at high magnetic fields and low temperatures, well described in a fluctuation free mean-field theory. The experimental data and the corresponding analysis favor the quantum concept of effective increasing space dimensionality at low temperatures that suppresses a fluctuation divergence at a second order phase transition.

We measured the Raman spectra of ferromagnetic nearly half metal CoS2 in a broad temperature range. All five Raman active modes Ag, Eg, Tg(1), Tg(2) and Tg(3) were observed. The magnetic ordering is indicated by a change of the temperature dependences of the frequency and the line width of Ag and T g(2) modes at the Curie point. The temperature dependence of the frequencies and linewidths of the Ag, Eg, Tg(1), T g(2) modes in the paramagnetic phase can be described in the framework of the Klemens approach. Hardening of the Tg(2), Tg(1) and A g modes on cooling can be unambiguously seen in the ferromagnetic phase. The linewidths of Tg(2) and Ag modes behave a natural way at low exciting laser power (decrease with decreasing temperature) in the ferromagnetic phase. At high exciting laser power the corresponding linewidths increase at temperature decreasing below the Curie temperature. Then as can be seen the line width of Ag mode reaches a maxima at about 80K. This intriging feature probably signifies a specific channel of the optical phonon decay in the ferromagnetic phase of CoS2. Tentative explanations of some of the observed effects are given, taking into account the nearly half metallic nature of CoS2.

The heat capacity of helical magnets Cu2OSeO3 and MnSi has been investigated at high pressures by the ac-calorimetric technique. Despite the differing nature of their magnetic moments, Cu2OSeO3 and MnSi demonstrate a surprising similarity in behavior of their magnetic and thermodynamic properties at the phase transition. Two characteristic features of the heat capacity at the phase transitions of both substances (peak and shoulder) behave also in a similar way at high pressures if analyzed as a function of temperature. This probably implies that the longitudinal spin fluctuations typical of weak itinerant magnets like MnSi contribute little to the phase transition. The shoulders of the heat capacity curves shrink with decreasing temperature suggesting that they arise from classical fluctuations. In case of MnSi the sharp peak and shoulder at the heat capacity disappear simultaneously probably signifying the existence of a tricritical point and confirming the fluctuation nature of the first order phase transition in MnSi as well as in Cu2OSeO3.

Application of high pressure shows fast degradation of the first order features of the phase transition. The temperature derivative of resistivity demonstrates two notable features of the phase transition that disappear on pressure increasing. They are a sharp peak marking the first order phase transition and a shallow maximum, situated slightly above the critical temperature and pointing to the domain of prominent helical fluctuations. The current experimental data rule out any strong first order phase transition in MnSi at high pressures and low temperatures, which would prevent development of a quantum critical region. On the contrary, there should exist true quantum critical phenomena in MnSi at high pressures because a tiny first order transition, if it survives at high pressures to the lowest temperature, hardly could suppress the entire quantum critical region.

Abstract:
Measurements of the sound velocities in a single crystal of FeSi were performed in the temperature range 4-300 K. Elastic constants $C_{12}$ and $C_{44}$ deviate from a quasiharmonic behavior at high temperature; whereas, $C_{12}$ increases anomalously in the entire range of temperature, indicating a change in the electron structure of this material

Measurements of the sound velocities in a single crystal of MnSi were performed in the temperature range 4-150 K. Elastic constants, controlling propagation of longitudinal waves reveal significant softening at a temperature of about 29.6 K and small discontinuities at $\sim$28.8 K, which corresponds to the magnetic phase transition in MnSi. In contrast the shear elastic moduli do not show any softening at all, reacting only to the small volume deformation caused by the magneto-volume effect. The current ultrasonic study exposes an important fact that the magnetic phase transition in MnSi, occurring at 28.8 K, is just a minor feature of the global transformation marked by the rounded maxima or minima of heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, sound velocities and absorption, and the temperature derivative of resistivity.

New measurements of AC magnetic susceptibility and DC resistivity of a high quality single crystal MnSi were carried out at high pressure making use of helium as a pressure medium. The form of the AC magnetic susceptibility curves at the magnetic phase transition suddenly changes upon helium solidification. This implies strong sensitivity of magnetic properties of MnSi to non hydrostatic stresses and suggests that the early claims on the existence of a tricritical point at the phase transition line are probably a result of misinterpretation of the experimental data. At the same time resistivity behavior at the phase transition does not show such a significant influence of helium solidification. The sharp peak at the temperature derivative of resistivity, signifying the first order nature of the phase transition in MnSi successfully survived helium crystallization and continued the same way to the highest pressure.

New high resolution data for heat capacity, heat capacity under applied magnetic fields and resistivity of high quality single crystal of MnSi are reported. Striking mirror symmetry between temperature derivative of resistivity and thermal expansion coefficient of MnSi is displayed. Close similarity between variation of the heat capacity and the temperature derivative of resistivity through the phase transition is observed. It is shown that the heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient of the helical phase are not influenced by moderate magnetic field.

A careful study of thermodynamic and transport properties of a high quality single crystal of MnSi at ambient pressure suggests that its transition to a helical magnetic state near 29 K is weakly first order. The heat capacity, temperature derivatives of resistivity, thermal expansion and magnetic susceptibility exhibit a specific structure around the phase transition point, interpreted as a combination of first and second order features. Conclusions drawn from these experiments question prevailing views on the phase diagram of MnSi and propose that the phase transition under study becomes second order at high pressure and low temperature.
