We formulate a new class of modified gravity models, that is, generalized four-dimensional Chern-Pontryagin models, whose action is characterized by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the Chern-Pontryagin topological term ${}^*RR$, i.e., $f(R, {}^*RR)$. Within this framework, we derive the gravitational field equations and solve them for a particular model, $f(R, {}^*RR)=R+β({}^*RR)^2$, considering two ansatzes: the slowly rotating metric and first-order perturbations of Gödel-type metrics. For the former, we find a first-order correction to the frame-dragging effect boosted by the parameter $L$, which characterizes the departures from general relativity results. For the latter, Gödel-type metrics hold unperturbed. We conclude this paper by displaying that generalized four-dimensional Chern-Pontryagin models admit a scalar-tensor representation, whose explicit form presents two scalar fields: $Φ$, a dynamical degree of freedom, while the second, $\vartheta$, a non-dynamical degree of freedom. In particular, the scalar field $\vartheta$ emerges coupled with the Chern-Pontryagin topological term ${}^*RR$, i.e., $\vartheta {}^*RR$, which is nothing more than Chern-Simons term.

In this study, we investigate the signatures of a non-commutative black hole solution. Initially, we calculate the thermodynamic properties of the system, including entropy, heat capacity, and Hawking radiation. For the latter quantity, we employ two distinct methods: surface gravity and the topological approach. Additionally, we examine the emission rate and remnant mass within this context. Remarkably, the lifetime of the black hole, after reaching its final state due to the evaporation process, is expressed analytically up to a grey-body factor. We estimate the lifetime for specific initial and final mass configurations. Also, we analyze the tensorial quasinormal modes using the 6th-order WKB method. Finally, we study the deflection angle, i.e., gravitational lensing, in both the weak and strong deflection limits.

This paper explores the renormalization of scale-free quadratic gravity coupled to the bumblebee field and its potential for dynamically breaking Lorentz symmetry. We conduct one-loop renormalization of the model and calculate the associated renormalization group functions. Additionally, we compute the one-loop effective potential for the bumblebee field, revealing that it acquires a non-trivial vacuum expectation value induced by radiative corrections - a phenomenon known as the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. This spontaneous breaking of scale invariance arises from the non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of the bumblebee field, implicating Lorentz symmetry violation. Consequently, the non-minimal coupling between the bumblebee and gravitational fields results in a spontaneous generation of the Einstein-Hilbert term due to radiative corrections, thereby linking the Planck scale to Lorentz violation phenomena.

In this paper, we investigate these effects by calculating the one-loop Euler-Heisenberg-like effective action within a Lorentz-violating scalar quantum electrodynamics framework. In both CPT-even and CPT-odd scenarios, we obtain the exact result in all orders of the stress tensor $F_{μν}$ and evaluate explicitly the lower orders of this effective action. We identify the quantum effects coming from Lorentz violation in an explicitly gauge invariant way. Nonlinear Lorentz-violating contributions that may affect photon-photon scattering are explicitly evaluated.

In this paper, we consider the coupling of the metric-affine bumblebee gravity to the Abelian gauge field and obtain the effective model corresponding to the weak gravity limit of this theory. The effective bumblebee theory displays new unconventional couplings between the bumblebee field and its field strength, and the $U(1)$ gauge field along with its respective field strength, as a result of the non-metricity effects. Thus, being a new gauge-bumblebee theory, it represents an example of vector-vector couplings which are very rarely considered, if not entirely overlooked, in the Abelian case. For this theory we calculate the lower perturbative corrections. We close the paper with discussions of other possible vector-vector couplings.

Within the framework of the spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking, we consider a metric--affine generalization of the gravitational sector of the Standard--Model Extension (SME), including the Lorentz--violating (LV) coefficients $u$ and $s^{μν}$. In this model, we derive the modified Einstein field equations in order to obtain a new axisymmetric vacuum spinning solution for a particular bumblebee's profile. Such a solution has the remarkable property of incorporating the effects of Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) through the LV dimensionless parameter $X=ξb^2$, as the LSB is turned off, $X=0$, we recover the well--established result, the Kerr solution, as expected. Afterwards, we calculate the geodesics, the radial acceleration and thermodynamic quantities for this new metric. We also estimate an upper bound for $X$ by using astrophysical data of the advance Mercury's perihelion.

In this paper we consider a much less popular version of the light-induced spin precession that does not imply coherent precession of the spin-system magnetization and is excited by linearly (rather than circularly) polarized light. Pump-probe measurements performed on the D2 line of cesium vapor show that the magnitude of the signal of the optically driven spin-alignment precession, in "vacuum" cells (with no buffer gas) is close to that of classical spin-orientation precession. In the presence of buffer gas, however, the signal of spin-alignment precession appears to be strongly suppressed. The discovered effect is ascribed to spin mixing of excited states of cesium atoms in the cycle of optical pum**.

We investigate thick-brane solutions within the five-dimensional bumblebee gravity in the presence of a real scalar field. Specifically, we implement the Lorentz symmetry breaking scenario within this context and obtain brane-like structures. Since the contribution of the bumblebee field is expected to be weak, we solve the field equations in the small-parameter regime. In this situation, we develop a first-order framework to describe the brane. The results show that the function which drives the bumblebee field may engender a lumplike structure whose shape depends on the parameters. On one hand, the effect of the non-minimal coupling, controlled by $ξ$, between the bumblebee field and gravity shifts the field from the vacuum expectation value. On the other hand, the aether parameter, $β$, is responsible for modifying the solution inside the brane.

Modification of titanium microstructure after propagation of a melting shock wave (SW) generated by a femtosecond laser pulse is investigated experimentally and analyzed using hydrodynamic and atomistic simulations. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy with analysis of microdiffraction is used to determine the microstructure of subsurface layers of pure titanium sample before and after modification. We found that two layers of modified titanium are formed beneath the surface. A top surface polycrystalline layer of nanoscale grains is formed from a shock-molten layer via rapid crystallization. In a deeper subsurface layer, where the shock-induced melting becomes impossible due attenuation of SW, recrystallization of plastically deformed titanium leads to grain size changes in comparison with intact titanium. Molecular dynamics simulation of single-crystal titanium reveals that the SW front continues to melt/liquefy even after its temperature drops below the melting curve $T_m(P)$. The enormous shear stress generated in a narrow SW front leads to collapse/amorphization of the crystal lattice and formation of a supercooled metastable melt. Such melt crystallizes in an unloading tail of SW until its temperature becomes higher than $T_m(P)$ due to a rapid pressure drop. Later, crystallization of the subsurface molten layer will continue after the heat leaves it. After the shear stress drops below $\sim 12$GPa within the SW front, such the cold mechanical melting ceases giving place to the shock-induced plastic deformations. The depth of modification is limited by SW attenuation to the Hugoniot elastic limit, and can reach several micrometers. The obtained results reveal the basic physical mechanisms of surface hardening of metals by ultrashort laser pulses.

The renormalization of quantum field theories usually assumes Lorentz and gauge symmetries, besides the general restrictions imposed by unitarity and causality. However, the set of renormalizable theories can be enlarged by relaxing some of these assumptions. In this work, we consider the particular case of a CPT-preserving but Lorentz-breaking extension of scalar QED. For this theory, we calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the three- and four-point scalar-vector vertex functions, at the lowest order in the Lorentz violation parameters; and we explicitly verify that the resulting low-energy effective action is compatible with the usual gauge invariance requirements. With these results, we complete the one-loop renormalization of the model at the leading order in the Lorentz-violating parameters.

Significant suppression of radiation in 3D structured media with small refractive index 1.4-1.6, such as of glass or polymers, is a desirable feature yet to be obtained. For periodical structures this is realised at frequencies of the complete photonic band gap (CPBG), which up to now was demonstrated to open for materials with refractive index of at least 1.9. We present here a quasiperiodic 3D structure consisting of multiple overlap** gratings with a homogeneous distribution of Bragg peaks on a sphere in reciprocal space, which allows efficient suppression of emission. Recently we have presented the theoretical model, considering interaction with the neighbouring gratings only, that estimates a finite CPBG for arbitrarily small refractive indices and thus complete emission suppression in infinite structures. However, numerical simulations demonstrate a finite leakage of power from emitter not predicted by the model. Still the simulations show -10 dB suppression in 3D structures with optimised number of gratings. Astonishingly, as we show here, this limit is almost independent of the refractive index contrast. Also, the structures with a defined number of gratings show maximal suppression at certain refractive indices, losing the suppression even at higher refractive indices. The -10 dB suppression is demonstrated for refractive index contrast as low as 1.30.

We discuss the implications of a small indium content (3%) in a GaAs epilayer on the electron- and nuclear-spin relaxation due to enhanced quadrupolar effects induced by the strain. Using the weakly perturbative spin-noise spectroscopy, we study the electron-spin relaxation dynamics without explicit excitation. The observed temperature dependence indicates the presence of localized states, which have an increased interaction with the surrounding nuclear spins. Time-resolved spin-noise spectroscopy is then applied to study the relaxation dynamics of the optically pumped nuclear-spin system. It shows a multi-exponential decay with time components, ranging from several seconds to hundreds of seconds. Further, we provide a measurement of the local magnetic field acting between the nuclear spins and discover a strong contribution of quadrupole effects. Finally, we apply the nuclear spin diffusion model, that allows us to estimate the concentration of the localized carrier states and to determine the nuclear spin diffusion constant characteristic for this system.

The metric-affine bumblebee model in the presence of fermionic matter minimally coupled to the connection is studied. We show that the model admits an Einstein frame representation in which the matter sector is described by a non-minimal Dirac action without any analogy in the literature. Such non-minimal terms involve unconventional couplings between the bumblebee and the fermion field. We then rewrite the quadratic fermion action in the Einstein frame in the basis of 16 Dirac matrices in order to identify the coefficients for Lorentz/CPT violation in all orders of the non-minimal coupling $ξ$. The exact result for the fermionic determinant in the Einstein frame, including all orders in $ξ$, is also provided. We demonstrate that the axial contributions are at least of second order in the perturbative expansion of $ξ$. Furthermore, we compute the one-loop effective potential within the weak field approximation.

In this work, a possible description for quantum dynamics of the cuscuton within the sigma-model approach is presented. Lower order perturbative corrections and the structure of divergences are found. Motivated by the results generated by the perturbative approach, we investigate the existence of topological structures in the cuscuton-like model. The structures we study are, first, kink-like configurations in two dimensional spacetime, second, vortex solutions in three dimensional one with gauge field ruled by the Maxwell term. In fact, to show the existence of kink solutions it is needed to introduce a standard dynamics term in the cuscuton-like model. Then, a numerical approach (interpolation method) is used and the solution of the scalar field is presented. On the other hand, for the study of topological vortices, we reorganized the energy density to obtain, for convenience, equations similar to those canonical vortex structures, namely, the Maxwell-Higgs model. In fact, even for this particular case, we observed the existence of structures with localized energy and quantized magnetic flux in a given topological sector. We also show that when the model does not spontaneously break the symmetry, the $(2+1)D$ model only admits the so-called non-topological field solutions.

The effectiveness of multiple electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) harmonics has been thoroughly investigated in context of high current drive efficiency, generally observed in fully non-inductive operation of the low aspect ratio EXL-50 spherical tokamak (ST) powered by electron cyclotron (EC) waves. The Fokker-Plank equation is numerically solved to obtain electron distribution function, under steady state of the relativistic nonlinear Coulomb collision and quasi-linear diffusion operators, for calculating plasma current driven by the injected EC wave. For the extra-ordinary EC wave, simulation results unfold a mechanism by which electrons moving around the cold second harmonic ECR layer strongly resonate with higher harmonics via the relativistic Doppler shifted resonance condition. This feature is in fact evident above a certain value of input EC wave power in simulation, indicating it to be a non-linear phenomenon. Similar to the experimental observation, high efficiency in current drive (over 1 A/W) has indeed been found in simulation for a typical low density ($\sim 1\times10^{18}~m^{-3}$), low temperature ($\lesssim 100$ eV) plasma of EXL-50 by taking into account multi-pass absorptions in our simulation model. However, such characteristic is not found in the ordinary EC-wave study for both single-pass and multi-pass simulations, suggesting it as inefficient in driving current on our ST device.

In this paper, we consider the Dirac field minimally coupled to a dynamical background with torsion and compute its contribution to the fermionic one-loop effective action. Such a contribution owns topological nature since it can be linked with topological invariants from Riemann-Cartan spaces, like Nieh-Yan and Chern-Simons terms. Furthermore, we propose a novel modified theory of gravity constructed by adding the aforementioned one-loop contribution to the Einstein-Cartan action. The modified field equations reduce to those ones of GR under certain circumstances, providing therefore trivial solutions. However, in particular, we find a non-trivial solution where the modified field equations do not reduce to the GR ones.

Within this study, we start with a Lorentz-breaking dispersion relation which accounts for modified Friedmann equations with a bounce solution. We calculate the spectral radiance, the entropy, the Helmholtz free energy, the heat capacity, and the mean energy. Nevertheless, the latter two ones turn out to contribute only in a trivial manner. Furthermore, one intriguing aspect gives rise to: for some configurations of $η$, $l_{P}$, and $T$, the thermodynamical behavior of the system seems to indicate instability. However, despite of showing this particularity, the solutions of the thermodynamic functions in general turn out to agree with the literature, e.g., the second law of thermodynamics is maintained. More so, all the results are derived \textit{analytically} and three different regimes of temperature of the universe are also considered, i.e., the inflationary era, the electroweak epoch and the cosmic microwave background.

In this paper, we consider stationary first-order perturbations to these metrics in the non-dynamical framework. Under certain assumptions we find analytical solutions to the perturbed field equations. The solutions of the first-order field equations break the translational and cylindrical symmetries of the unperturbed metrics. An optical pulse asymptotically reaching zero group velocity in tapered waveguides can ultimately stop at a certain position in the taper accompanied by a strong spatial compression. This phenomenon can be also observed in spatio-temporal systems where the pulse velocity asymptotically reaches the velocity of a tapered front. The first system is well known from tapered plasmonic waveguides where adiabatic nano-focusing of light is observed. Its counterpart in the spatio-temporal system is the optical push broom effect where a nonlinear front collects and compresses the signal. Here, we use the slowly-varying envelope approximation to describe such systems. We demonstrate an analytical solution for the linear taper and the piecewise linear dispersion and show that the solution in this case resembles that of an optical lens in paraxial approximation. In particular, the spatial distribution of the focused light represents the Fourier transform of the signal at the input.

The measurements were performed by probing the cell with cesium vapor at the wavelengths of the transition ${6}^2S_{1/2} \leftrightarrow {6}^2P_{3/2}$ ($\mathrm{D}_2$ line) with the unresolved hyperfine structure of the excited state. The light-induced broadening of the SN resonance was found to differ strongly at different slopes of the $\mathrm{D}_2$ line and, generally, varied nonmonotonically with light power. We discuss the effect in terms of the phenomenological Bloch equations for the spin fluctuations and demonstrate that the SN broadening behavior strongly depends on the relation between the pum** and excited-level decay rates, the spin precession, and decoherence rates. To reconcile the puzzling experimental results, we propose that the degree of optical perturbation of the spin-system is controlled by the route of the excited-state relaxation of the atom or, in other words, that the act of optical excitation of the atom does not necessarily break down completely its ground-state coherence and continuity of the spin precession. Spectral asymmetry of the effect, in this case, is provided by the position of the "closed" transition $F = 4 \leftrightarrow F' = 5$ at the short-wavelength side of the line. This hypothesis, however, remains to be proven by microscopic calculations.

It is well known that non-local theories of gravity have been a flourish arena of studies for many reasons, for instance, the UV incompleteness of General Relativity (GR). In this paper we check the consistency of ST-homogeneous Gödel-type metrics within the non-local gravity framework. The non-local models considered here are ghost-free but not necessarily renormalizable since we focus on the classical solutions of the field equations. Furthermore, the non-locality is displayed in the action through transcendental entire functions of the d'Alembert operator $\Box$ that are mathematically represented by a power series of the $\Box$-operator. We find two exactly solutions for the field equations correspondent to the degenerate ($ω=0$) and hyperbolic ($m^{2}=4ω^2$) classes of ST-homogeneous Gödel-type metrics.

The mechanism of formation of the polarimetric signal observed in the spin noise spectroscopy (SNS) is analyzed from the viewpoint of the light scattering theory. A rigorous calculation of the polarimetric signal (Faraday rotation or ellipticity) recorded in the SNS is presented in the approximation of single scattering. We show that it is most correctly to consider this noise as a result of scattering of the probe light beam by fluctuating susceptibility of the medium. Fluctuations of the gyrotropic (antisymmetric) part of the susceptibility tensor lead to appearance of the typical for the SNS Faraday rotation noise at the Larmor frequency. At the same time, fluctuations of linear anisotropy of the medium (symmetric part of the susceptibility tensor) give rise to the ellipticity noise of the probe beam spectrally localized at the double Larmor frequency. The results of the theoretical analysis well agree with the experimental data on the ellipticity noise in cesium vapor.
