We investigate the reflectance of a dielectric plate coated with a graphene sheet which possesses the nonzero energy gap and chemical potential at any temperature. The general formalism for the reflectance using the polarization tensor is presented in the framework of Dirac model. It allows calculation of the reflectivity properties for any material plate coated with real graphene sheet on the basis offirst principles of quantum electrodynamics. Numerical computations of the reflectance are performed for the graphene-coated SiO$_2$ plate at room, liquid-nitrogen, and liquid-helium temperatures. We demonstrate that there is a nontrivial interplay between the chemical potential, energy gap, frequency, and temperature in their joint action on the reflectance of a graphene-coated plate. Specifically, it is shown that at the fixed frequency of an incident light an increase of the chemical potential and the energy gap affect the reflectance in opposite directions by increasing and decreasing it, respectively. According to our results, the reflectance approaches unity at sufficiently low frequencies and drops to that of an uncoated plate at high frequencies for any values of the chemical potential and energy gap. The impact of temperature on the reflectance is found to be more pronounced for graphene coatings with smaller chemical potentials. The obtained results could be applied for optimization of optical detectors and other devices exploiting graphene coatings.

The reflectance of graphene is investigated in the framework of the Dirac model with account of its realistic properties, such as nonzero chemical potential and band gap, at any temperature. For this purpose, the exact reflection coefficients of the electromagnetic waves on a graphene sheet expressed via the polarization tensor and ultimately via the electrical conductivity of graphene have been used. The reflectance of graphene is computed as a function of frequency and chemical potential at different temperatures and values of the band-gap parameter. The minimum values of the reflectance are found which are reached in the infrared domain at the points of vanishing imaginary part of the conductivity of graphene. For a gapped graphene, the maximum reflectance equal to unity is reached at the points where the imaginary part of conductivity diverges. The computational results demonstrate an interesting interplay between the band gap and chemical potential in their combined effect on the reflectance. Specifically, there are wide frequency intervals where the reflectance of graphene increases with increasing chemical potential and decreasing band gap. The numerical computations are found to be in good agreement with the analytic asymptotic expressions in the regions of their applicability. Several technological areas, where the obtained results could be used, are listed.

We propose the experimental scheme and present detailed theory of the optical chopper which functionality is based on the balance between the Casimir and light pressures. The proposed device consists of two atomically thin metallic mirrors forming the Fabry-Pérot microfilter. One of the mirrors is deposited on a solid cube and another one on a thinner wall subjected to bending under the influence of the attractive Casimir force and repulsive force due to the pressure of light from a continuous laser amplified in the resonator of a microfilter. The separation distance between the mirrors should only slightly exceed the half wavelength of the laser light. It is shown that in this case the resonance condition in the microfilter alternatively obeys and breaks down resulting in the periodic pulses of the transmitted light. The Casimir pressure is calculated taking into account an anisotropy of the dielectric permittivity of a metal at several first Matsubara frequencies. The reflectivity properties of atomically thin metallic mirrors in the optical spectral range are found using the experimentally consistent phenomenological approach developed earlier in the literature. The specific values of all parameters, found for the microfilter made of quartz glass with Ag mirrors, demonstrate its workability. The proposed optical chopper may find prospective applications in the emerging field of nanotechnology exploiting the effects of quantum fluctuations.

The complete theory of electrical conductivity of graphene at arbitrary temperature is developed with taken into account mass-gap parameter and chemical potential. Both the in-plane and out-of-plane conductivities of graphene are expressed via the components of the polarization tensor in (2+1)-dimensional space-time analytically continued to the real frequency axis. Simple analytic expressions for both the real and imaginary parts of the conductivity of graphene are obtained at zero and nonzero temperature. They demonstrate an interesting interplay depending on the values of mass gap and chemical potential. In the local limit, several results obtained earlier using various approximate and phenomenological approaches are reproduced, refined and generalized. The numerical computations of both the real and imaginary parts of the conductivity of graphene are performed to illustrate the obtained results. The analytic expressions for the conductivity of graphene obtained in this paper can serve as a guide in the comparison between different theoretical approaches and between experiment and theory.

Ferromagnetic-ferroelectric nanocomposites are of interest for realizing strong strain mediated coupling between electric and magnetic subsystems due to high surface area-to-volume ratio. This report is on the synthesis of nickel ferrite (NFO) -barium titanate (BTO) core-shell nano-fibers, magnetic field assisted assembly into superstructures, and studies on magneto-electric (ME) interactions. Electrospinning techniques were used to prepare coaxial fibers of 0.5-1.5 micron in diameter. The core-shell structure of annealed fibers was confirmed by electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The fibers were assembled into discs and films in a uniform magnetic field or a field gradient. Studies on ME coupling in the assembled films and discs were done by magnetic field H induced polarization, magneto-dielectric effects at low frequencies and at 16-24 GHz, and low frequency ME voltage coefficients (MEVC). We measured 2~ 2-7% change in remnant polarization and in the permittivity for H = 7 kOe, and a MEVC of 0.4 mV/cm Oe at 30 Hz. A model has been developed for low-frequency ME effects in an assembly of fibers and takes into account dipole-dipole interactions between the fibers and fiber discontinuity. Theoretical estimates for the low-frequency MEVC have been compared with the data. These results indicate strong ME coupling in superstructures of the core-shell fibers.

The theoretical description for the reflectivity properties of dielectric, metal and semiconductor plates coated with graphene is developed in the framework of the Dirac model. Graphene is described by the polarization tensor allowing the analytic continuation to the real frequency axis. The plate materials are described by the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivities. The general formulas for the reflection coefficients and reflectivities of the graphene-coated plates, as well as their asymptotic expressions at high and low frequencies, are derived. The developed theory is applied to the graphene-coated dielectric (fused silica), metal (Au and Ni), and semiconductor (Si with various charge carrier concentrations) plates. In all these cases the impact of graphene coating on the plate reflectivity properties is calculated over the wide frequency ranges. The obtained results can be used in many applications exploiting the graphene coatings, such as the optical detectors, transparent conductors, anti-reflection surfaces etc.

The ultimate information capacity of a three-dimensional hologram for the case of an optimal use of the dynamic range of a storage medium, number of pages, the readout conditions is considered. The volume hologram is regarded as an object of the information theory. For the first time the formalism of the reciprocal lattice has been introduced in order to estimate the informational properties of the hologram. The diffraction-limited holographic recording is analyzed in the framework of the reciprocal lattice formalism. Calculations of the information capacity of a three-dimensional hologram involve analysis of a set of multiplexed holograms, each of which has a finite signal-to-noise ratio determined by the dynamic range of the holographic medium and the geometry of recording and readout. An optimal number of pages that provides a maxi-mum information capacity at angular multiplexing is estimated.

Using the obtained representation for the polarization tensor, we develope quantum field theoretical description for the reflectivity of graphene. The analytic asymptotic expressions for the reflection coefficients and reflectivities at low and high frequencies are derived for both independent polarizations of the electromagnetic field. The dependencies of reflectivities on the frequency and angle of incidence are investigated. Mechanical strain mediated magnetoelectric effects are studied in bilayers and trilayers of piezoelectric quartz and magnetostrictive permendur (P), an alloy of Fe-Co-V. It is shown that the magneto-electric voltage coefficient (MEVC), proportional to the ratio of the piezoelectric coupling coefficient to the permittivity, is higher in quart-based composites than for traditional ferroelectrics based ME composites. In bilayers of X-cut single crystal quartz and permendur, the MEVC varies from 1.5 V/cm Oe at 20 Hz to ~ 185 V/cm Oe at bending resonance or electromechanical resonance corresponding to longitudinal acoustic modes. In symmetric quartz-P trilayers, the MEVC ~ 4.8 V/cm Oe at 20 Hz and ~ 175 V/cm Oe at longitudinal acoustic resonance. A model for low-frequency and resonance ME effects is provided for theoretical estimates of MEVC and calculated MEVC are in general agreement with measured values. Magneto-electric composites with quartz have the desired characteristics such as the absence of ferroelectric hysteresis and pyroelectric losses and could potentially replace ferroelectrics in composite-based magnetic sensors, transducers and high frequency devices.

Measurements are being performed with active and passive devices in different locations and orientations of the Russian segment of the station. The goal is to perform a detailed evaluation of the differences in particle fluence and nuclear composition due to different shielding material and attitude of the station. The Sileye-3/Alteino detector is used to identify nuclei up to Iron in the energy range above 60 MeV/n. Several passive dosimeters (TLDs, CR39) are also placed in the same location of Sileye-3 detector. Polyethylene shielding is periodically interposed in front of the detectors to evaluate the effectiveness of shielding on the nuclear component of the cosmic radiation. The project was submitted to ESA in reply to the AO in the Life and Physical Science of 2004 and data taking began in December 2005. Dosimeters and data cards are rotated every six months: up to now three launches of dosimeters and data cards have been performed and have been returned with the end of expedition 12 and 13.

The first observation of microwave magnetoelectric (ME) interactions through ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in bilayers of single crystal ferromagnetic-piezoelectric oxides and a theoretical model for the effect are presented. An electric field E produces a mechanical deformation in the piezoelectric phase, resulting in a shift dHE in the resonance field for the ferromagnet. The strength of ME coupling is obtained from data on dHE vs E. Studies were performed at 9.3 GHz on bilayers of (111) yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films and (001) lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT). The samples were positioned outside a TE102-reflection type cavity. Resonance profiles were obtained for E = 0-8 kV/cm for both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields H. Important results are as follows. (i) The ME coupling in the bilayers is an order of magnitude stronger than in polycrystalline composites and is in the range 1-5.4 Oe cm/kOe, depending on the YIG film thickness. (ii) The coupling strength is dependent on the magnetic field orientation and is higher for out-of-plane H than for in-plane H. (iii) Estimated ME constant and its dependence on volume ratio for the two phases are in good agreement with the data.

The observation of strong magnetoelectric effects is reported in thick film bilayers and multilayers of ferrite-lead titanate zirconate (PZT) and lanthanum nanganite-PZT. The ferrites used in our studies included pure and zinc substituted cobalt-, nickel- and lithium ferrites. Samples were prepared by sintering 10-40 mm thick films obtained by tape-casting. Measurements of ME voltage coefficients at 10-1000 Hz indicated a giant ME effect in nickel ferrite-PZT, but a relatively weak coupling in other ferrite-PZT and manganite-PZT systems. Multilayers prepared by hot pressing was found to show a higher ME coefficient than sintered samples. Evidence was found for enhancement in ME coefficients when Zn was substituted in ferrites. The Zn-assisted increase was attributed to low anisotropy and high permeability that resulted in favorable magneto-mechanical coupling in the composites. We analyzed the data in terms of our recent comprehensive theory that takes into account actual interface conditions by introducing an interface coupling parameter. Theoretical longitudinal and transverse ME voltage coefficients for unclamped and clamped samples are in general agreement with data. From the analysis we inferred excellent interface coupling for nickel zinc ferrite-PZT and weak coupling for other layered systems.

A theoretical model is presented for low-frequency magnetoelectric (ME) effects in bilayers of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases. A novel approach, the introduction of an interface coupling parameter k, is proposed for the consideration of actual boundary conditions at the interface. An averaging method is used to estimate effective material parameters. Expressions for ME voltage coefficients are obtained by solving elastostatic and electrostatic equations. We consider both unclamped and rigidly clamped bilayers and three different field orientations of importance: (i) longitudinal fields in which the poling field, bias field and ac fields are all parallel to each other and perpendicular to the sample plane; (ii) transverse fields for magnetic fields parallel to each other and perpendicular to electric fields, and (iii) in-plane longitudinal fields for all the fields parallel to each other and to the sample plane. The theory predicts a giant ME coupling for bilayers with cobalt ferrite (CFO), nickel ferrite (NFO), or lanthanum strontium manganite (LSMO) for the magnetostrictive phase and barium titanate (BTO) or lead zirconate titanate (PZT) for the piezoelectric phase.

Magnetoelectric interactions in bilayers of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases are mediated by mechanical deformation. Here we discuss the theory and companion data for magnetoelectric (ME) coupling at electromechanical resonance (EMR) in a ferrite-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) bilayer. Estimated ME voltage coefficient versus frequency profiles for nickel, cobalt, or lithium ferrite and PZT reveal a giant ME effect at EMR with the highest coupling expected for cobalt ferrite-PZT. Measurements of resonance ME coupling have been carried out on layered and bulk composites of nickel ferrite-PZT. We observe a factor of 40-600 increase in ME voltage coefficient at EMR compared to low frequency values. Theoretical ME voltage coefficients versus frequency profiles are in excellent agreement with data. The resonance ME effect is therefore a novel tool for enhancing the field conversion efficiency in the composites.
