We suggest a new point of view according to which baryon resonances can be understood as collective excitations about intrinsic one-quark excitations in a mean field of definite symmetry. This approach is justified in the limit of large number of colours Nc, and is similar to the physics of large-A nuclei, hence "quark nuclear physics". Although in the real world Nc is only three, we obtain a good agreement with the observed resonance spectrum of light baryons up to 2 GeV, and of lowest charmed baryon multiplets. A by-product of the scheme is the prediction of new exotic charmed (and bottom) baryons that may be stable against strong decays.

Mechanical strain mediated magnetoelectric effects are studied in bilayers and trilayers of piezoelectric quartz and magnetostrictive permendur (P), an alloy of Fe-Co-V. It is shown that the magneto-electric voltage coefficient (MEVC), proportional to the ratio of the piezoelectric coupling coefficient to the permittivity, is higher in quart-based composites than for traditional ferroelectrics based ME composites. In bilayers of X-cut single crystal quartz and permendur, the MEVC varies from 1.5 V/cm Oe at 20 Hz to ~ 185 V/cm Oe at bending resonance or electromechanical resonance corresponding to longitudinal acoustic modes. In symmetric quartz-P trilayers, the MEVC ~ 4.8 V/cm Oe at 20 Hz and ~ 175 V/cm Oe at longitudinal acoustic resonance. A model for low-frequency and resonance ME effects is provided for theoretical estimates of MEVC and calculated MEVC are in general agreement with measured values. Magneto-electric composites with quartz have the desired characteristics such as the absence of ferroelectric hysteresis and pyroelectric losses and could potentially replace ferroelectrics in composite-based magnetic sensors, transducers and high frequency devices.

We study a wide class of metrics in a Lebesgue space with a standard measure, the class of so-called admissible metrics. We consider the cone of admissible metrics, introduce a special norm in it, prove compactness criteria, define the "-entropy of a measure space with an admissible metric, etc. These notions and related results are applied to the theory of transformations with invariant measure; namely, we study the asymptotic properties of orbits in the cone of admissible metrics with respect to a given transformation or a group of transformations. The main result of this paper is a new discreteness criterion for the spectrum of an ergodic transformation: we prove that the spectrum is discrete if and only if the "-entropy of the averages of some (and hence any) admissible metric over fragments of its trajectory is uniformly bounded.

The Shtaerman-Kilchevsky theory of quasi-static blunt impact, which generalizes Hertz's classical impact theory, is used for modeling the frictionless contact interaction of an axially-symmetric particle with an elastic half-space. The incubation time fracture criterion is applied for predicting surface fracture. It is shown that there exist a critical value of the particle shape parameter such that for all its lower values the fracture energy possesses a nonzero minimal value.

A coexistence of the high-frequency spinon type resonance developed in the spin-liquid phase and of the low-frequency antiferromagnetic resonance was found in the ordered phase. The low-frequency magnetic resonance spectrum in the low field range has two gapped branches and corresponds well to the spectrum of spin excitations of a planar spiral spin structure with two axes of the anisotropy. The field induced phase transitions result in a more complicated low-frequency spectra.

A high-precision determination of the main parameters of the ψ(2S) resonance has been performed with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e^{+}e^{-} collider in three scans of the ψ(2S) -- ψ(3770) energy range. Fitting the energy dependence of the multihadron cross section in the vicinity of the ψ(2S) we obtained the mass value
M = 3686.114 +- 0.007 +- 0.011 ^{+0.002}_{-0.012} MeV and the product of the electron partial width by the branching fraction into hadrons Γ_{ee}*B_{h} = 2.233 +- 0.015 +- 0.037 +- 0.020 keV.
The third error quoted is an estimate of the model dependence of the result due to assumptions on the interference effects in the cross section of the single-photon e^{+}e^{-} annihilation to hadrons explicitly considered in this work.
Implicitly, the same assumptions were employed to obtain the charmonium leptonic width and the absolute branching fractions in many experiments.
Using the result presented and the world average values of the electron and hadron branching fractions, one obtains the electron partial width and the total width of the ψ(2S):
Γ_{ee} =2.282 +- 0.015 +- 0.038 +- 0.021 keV,
Γ= 296 +- 2 +- 8 +- 3 keV.
These results are consistent with and more than two times more precise than any of the previous experiments.

We report the final results of a study of the ψ(3770) meson using a data sample collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider. The data analysis takes into account the interference between the resonant and nonresonant $D\bar{D}$ production, where the latter is related to the nonresonant part of the energy-dependent form factor $F_D$. The vector dominance approach and several empirical parameterizations have been tried for the nonresonant $F_D^{\NR}(s)$.
Our results for the mass and total width of ψ(3770) are
M = 3779.2 ^{+1.8}_{-1.7} ^{+0.5}_{-0.7} ^{+0.3}_{-0.3} MeV, Γ=24.9 ^{+4.6}_{-4.0} ^{+0.5}_{-0.6} ^{+0.2}_{-0.9} MeV, where the first, second and third uncertainties are statistical, systematic and model, respectively. For the electron partial width two possible solutions have been found:
(1) Γ_{ee} = 154 ^{+79}_{-58} ^{+17}_{-9} ^{+13}_{-25} eV, (2) Γ_{ee} = 414 ^{+72}_{-80} ^{+24}_{-26} ^{+90}_{-10} eV.
Our statistics are insufficient to prefer one solution to another. The solution (2) mitigates the problem of non-$D\bar{D}$ decays but is disfavored by potential models.
It is shown that taking into account the resonance--continuum interference in the near-threshold region affects resonance parameters, thus the results presented can not be directly compared with the corresponding PDG values obtained ignoring this effect.

We discuss some ideas resulting from a phenomenological relation recently declared between the tension of string connecting the static quark-antiquark pair and surface tension of corresponding cylindrical bag. This relation analysis leads to the temperature of vanishing surface tension coefficient of the QGP bags at zero baryonic charge density as T_σ= 152.9 +- 4.5 MeV. We develop the view point that this temperature value is not a fortuitous coincidence with the temperature of (partial) chiral symmetry restoration as seen in the lattice QCD simulations. Besides, we argue that T_σdefines the QCD (tri)critical endpoint temperature and claim that a negative value of surface tension coefficient recently discovered is not a sole result, but should also exist in ordinary liquids at the supercritical temperatures.

Abstract:
We study the possibilities to analyse the data on leading neutrons production at first LHC runs. These data could be used to extract from it $π^+ p$ and $π^+π^+$ cross-sections. In this note we estimate relative contributions of $π$, $ρ$ and $a_2$ reggeons to charge exchanges and discuss related problems of measurements.

Basing on a semiclassical picture of dyons, we present a nonperturbative model of a pure Yang--Mills theory at any temperatures, for an arbitrary simple gauge group. We argue that at low temperatures dyons drive the Yang--Mills system for all groups to a phase where the `eigenphases' of the Polyakov line are, as a vector, proportional to the Weyl vector being the half sum of positive roots. For most gauge groups it means confinement, in particular for `quarks' in any N-ality nonzero representation of the SU(N) gauge group. At a critical temperature there is a 1st order phase transition for all groups (except SU(2) where the transition is 2nd order), characterized by a jump of Polyakov lines, irrespectively of whether the gauge group has a nontrivial center, or not.

Schubert calculus has been in the intersection of several fast develo** areas of mathematics for a long time. Originally invented as the description of the cohomology of homogeneous spaces it has to be redesigned when applied to other generalized cohomology theories such as the equivariant, the quantum cohomology, K-theory, and cobordism. All this cohomology theories are different deformations of the ordinary cohomology. In this note we show that there is in some sense the universal deformation of Schubert calculus which produces the above mentioned by specialization of the appropriate parameters. We build on the work of Lerche Vafa and Warner. The main conjecture there was that the classical cohomology of a hermitian symmetric homogeneous manifold is a Jacobi ring of an appropriate potential. We extend this conjecture and provide a simple proof. Namely we show that the cohomology of the hermitian symmetric space is a Jacobi ring of a certain potential and the equivariant and the quantum cohomology and K-theory is a Jacobi ring of a particular deformation of this potential. This suggests to study the most general deformations of the Frobenius algebra of cohomology of these manifolds by considering the versal deformation of the appropriate potential. The structure of the Jacobi ring of such potential is a subject of well developed singularity theory. This gives a potentially new way to look at the classical, the equivariant, the quantum and other flavors of Schubert calculus.

In this paper it is shown that a measurement of the relative luminosity changes at the LHC may be obtained by analysing the currents drawn from the high voltage power supplies of the electromagnetic section of the forward calorimeter of the ATLAS detector. The method was verified with a reproduction of a small section of the ATLAS forward calorimeter using proton beams of known beam energies and variable intensities at the U-70 accelerator at IHEP in Protvino, Russia. The experimental setup and the data taking during a test beam run in April 2008 are described in detail. A comparison of the measured high voltage currents with reference measurements from beam intensity monitors shows a linear dependence on the beam intensity. The non-linearities are measured to be less than 0.5 % combining statistical and systematic uncertainties.

The interval approach to computation of dynamics of celestial bodies in the planetary problem has been considered. It is based on the refusal from idealization of infinitely high resolving capacity of measuring tools, and forms an absolutely exact algorithm free of round-off error accumulation effect. The possibilities of the proposed approach are shown by the examples of Kepler's Problem and the problem of stability of the Solar system major planets for time interval of 6 billion years. The comparison of the interval and classical predictions of Kepler's particle location in Kepler's orbit provides support for the effect predicted by the theory, namely - conservation of the interval within which the values of difference of interval and classical coordinates lay with time. The computational results of the Solar system major planet orbital dynamics agree with the results obtained with the classical approach.

Using a three-dimensional spin polarimeter we have gathered evidence for the interference of spin states in photoemission from the surface alloy Sb/Ag(111). This system features a small Rashba-type spin-splitting of a size comparable to the linewidth of the quasiparticles, thus causing an intrinsic overlap between states with orthogonal spinors. Besides a small spin polarization caused by the spin-splitting, we observe a large spin polarization component in the plane normal to the quantization axis provided by the Rashba effect. Strongly suggestive of coherent spin rotation, this effect is largely independent of the photon energy and photon polarization.

Let H be a simple algebraic group of type F_4 over R such that H_K is the automorphism group of a 27-dimensional Jordan algebra which is a first Tits construction. If char K is not 2, this means precisely that the f_3 invariant of H_K is trivial. We prove that if an H-torsor is rationally trivial, then it is trivial over R. Abstract:
We propose an experiment at the LHC with leading neutron production.The latter can be used to extract from it the total $π^+ p$ cross-sections. With two leading neutrons we can get access to the total $π^+π^+$ cross-sections. In this note we give some estimates and discuss related problems and prospects.

This work was firstly published in 1986 \cite{we}. No real two-dimensional object with the zero-gap quasi-relativistic spectrum was known in that time. Such an object is well known now: this is graphene. That is why we decided to present it again as a e-print in a slightly modified form. This work was firstly published in 1986 \cite{we}. No real two-dimensional object with the zero-gap quasi-relativistic spectrum was known in that time. Such an object is well known now: this is graphene. That is why we decided to present it again as a e-print in a slightly modified form. A density of the two-dimensional zero-gap electronic states at the quantizing magnetic field in the presence the Gaussian random potential has been calculated. The problem is reduced to zero-dimensional spinor field theory using the holomorphic supersymmetric representation. The calculated density of states in the case of the mass perturbation has a delta function peak in the Dirac point.This peak smears due to the potential perturbation.

In the present notes we generalize the classical work of Demazure [Invariants symétriques entiers des groupes de Weyl et torsion] to arbitrary oriented cohomology theories and formal group laws. Let G be a split semisemiple linear algebraic group over a field and let T be its split maximal torus. We construct a generalized characteristic map relating the so called formal group ring of the character group of T with the cohomology of the variety of Borel subgroups of G. The main result of the paper says that the kernel of this map is generated by W-invariant elements, where W is the Weyl group of G. As one of the applications we provide an algorithm (realized as a Macaulau2 package) which can be used to compute the ring structure of an oriented cohomology (algebraic cobordism, Morava $K$-theories, connective K-theory, Chow groups, K_0, etc.) of a complete flag variety.

We discuss a new way to develop the exactly solvable model of the QCD critical endpoint by matching the deconfinement phase transition line for the system of quark-gluon bags with the line of their vanishing surface tension coefficient. In contrast to all previous findings in such models the deconfined phase is defined not by an essential singularity of the isobaric partition function, but by its simple pole. As a result we find out that the first order deconfinement phase transition which is defined by a discontinuity of the first derivative of system pressure is generated by a discontinuity of the derivative of surface tension coefficient.

The Fermi and Rashba energies of surface states in the Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111) alloy can be tuned simultaneously by changing the composition parameter x. We report on unconventional Fermi surface spin textures observed by spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy {that are correlated with a topological transition of the Fermi surface occurring at x=0.5. We show that the surface states remain fully spin polarized upon alloying and that the spin polarization vectors are approximately tangential to the constant energy contours. We discuss the implications of the topological transition for the transport of spin.

Hadron multiplicity from $W$ boson is calculated in pQCD. The agreement of our theoretical predictions with the LEP data says in favor of universality of the QCD evolution in hard processes.

The theory and experiments concerned with the electron-ion thermal relaxation and melting of overheated crystal lattice constitute the subject of this paper. The physical model includes two-temperature equation of state, many-body interatomic potential, the electron-ion energy exchange, electron thermal conductivity, and optical properties of solid, liquid, and two phase solid-liquid mixture. Two-temperature hydrodynamics and molecular dynamics codes are used. An experimental setup with pump-probe technique is used to follow evolution of an irradiated target with a short time step 100 fs between the probe femtosecond laser pulses. Accuracy of measurements of reflection coefficient and phase of reflected probe light are ~1% and $\sim 1\un{nm}$, respectively. It is found that,
{\it firstly}, the electron-electron collisions make a minor contribution to a light absorbtion in solid Al at moderate intensities;
{\it secondly}, the phase shift of a reflected probe results from heating of ion subsystem and kinetics of melting of Al crystal during $0<t<4\un{ps},$ where $t$ is time delay between the pump and probe pulses measured from the maximum of the pump;
{\it thirdly} the optical response of Au to a pump shows a marked contrast to that of Al on account of excitation of \textit{d}-electrons

The model allows us to estimate the minimal value of the QGP bags' width from the lattice QCD data. The large width of the QGP bags not only explains the observed deficit in the number of hadronic resonances comparing to the Hagedorn mass spectrum, but also clarifies the reason why the heavy QGP bags cannot be directly observed as metastable states in a hadronic phase.
