We report high-resolution dilatometry studies on single crystals of the Shastry-Sutherland-lattice magnet NdB$_4$ supported by specific heat and magnetometry data. Our dilatometric studies evidence pronounced anomalies at the phase boundaries which imply strong magneto-elastic coupling. The evolution of the three zero-field phase transitions separating distinct antiferromagnetic phases at $TN=17.2$~K, $TIT=6.8$~K and $TLT=4.8$~K can thus be traced in applied magnetic fields which provides the magnetic phase diagrams for $B\parallel c$ up to 15~T and for $B\parallel [110]$ up to 35~T. New in-field phases are discovered for both field directions and already known phases are confirmed. In particular, phase boundaries between different phases are unambiguously shown by sign changes of observed anomalies and corresponding changes in uniaxial pressure effects. For $B||c$, we find a 1/4-magnetization plateau in addition to a previously reported plateau at 1/5 of the saturation magnetization. TN increases for $B\parallel c$ in fields up to 15~T implying that magnetic moments of the all-in/all-out structure in the high temperature AFM ordered phase are driven towards the $c$ axis in high magnetic fields. Uniaxial pressure dependencies ${\partial}T_{\mathrm{crit}}/{\partial}p_{\mathrm{c}}$ of the phase transition temperatures for magnetic fields and pressure applied along the $c$ axis are derived from the data.

We investigate the magnetic properties of the monoclinic D-type $\rm{Er_2Si_2O_7}$ with a distorted honeycomb lattice using powder and single crystal neutron scattering techniques, as well as single crystal magnetisation measurements. The powder neutron diffraction shows that below the ordering temperature, $T_{\rm N}=1.85$ K, the compound forms a ${\bf q}=0$ antiferromagnetic structure with four sublattices. For $H \! \parallel \! a$, magnetisation measurements reveal a narrow, but clearly visible plateau at one third of the magnetisation saturation value. The plateau's stabilisation is accompanied by a significant increase of the magnetic unit cell, as the magnetic peaks with fractional indices are observed in single crystal neutron diffraction experiments. At low-temperatures, the inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of low-energy dispersionless excitations. Their spectrum is sensitive to the applied field, it significantly softens on the magnetisation plateau, and demonstrates the behaviour expected for a non-collinear Ising antiferromagnet away from the plateau.

We present the low-temperature magnetic structures of SrGd$_2$O$_4$ combining neutron diffraction methods on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples containing the $^{160}$Gd isotope. In contrast to other members of the Sr$Ln_2$O$_4$ family ($Ln$ = lanthanide) this system reveals two long-range ordered magnetic phases, which our diffraction data unambiguously identify. Below $T_{\rm N1}$ = 2.73~K, a $\mathbf{q}_1$ = (0 0 0) magnetic structure is stabilized where ferromagnetic chains along the $c$~axis (space group $Pnam$) are coupled antiferromagnetically with neighboring chains. On cooling below $T_{\rm N2}$ = 0.48~K, an additional incommensurate component modulated by $\mathbf{q}_2$ = (0~0~0.42) evolves and aligned along either of the perpendicular axes for the two different Gd sites, resulting in a fan-like magnetic structure. The identification of the particular Gd sites with the magnetic order observed with neutron diffraction is facilitated by a detailed analysis of the crystal fields acting on the sites. The observed ordering phenomena underline the complex multiaxial anisotropy in this system.

The magnetic H - T phase diagram of a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 with an equilateral triangular lattice structure is studied with 87Rb NMR and neutron diffraction techniques. This combination of experimental techniques allows us to determine the ordered components of the magnetic moments on the Fe3+ ions within various high-field phases - the Y, UUD, V, and fan structures, stabilized in the compound by the in-plane magnetic field. It is also established that the transition from the V to the fan phase is of first-order, whereas the transition from the fan phase to the polarized paramagnetic phase is continuous. An analysis of the NMR spectra shows that the high-field fan phase of RbFe(MoO4)2 can be successfully described by a periodic commensurate oscillation of the magnetic moments around the field direction in each Fe layer combined with an incommensurate modulation of the magnetic structure perpendicular to the layers.

We report the low-temperature properties of SrNd$_2$O$_4$, a geometrically frustrated magnet. Magnetisation and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline samples indicate the appearance of a magnetically ordered state at $T_{\rm N}=2.28(4)$~K. Powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal that an \afm\ state with the propagation vector \QV\ is stabilised below this temperature. The magnetic order is incomplete, as only one of the two Nd$^{3+}$ sites carries a significant magnetic moment while the other site remains largely disordered. The presence of a disordered magnetic component below $T_{\rm N}$ is confirmed with polarised neutron diffraction measurements. In an applied magnetic field, the bulk properties measurements indicate a phase transition at about 30~kOe. We construct a tentative $H$-$T$ phase diagram of \sno\ from these measurements.

We report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on the uniaxial length changes in a NdB$_4$ single crystal. The evolution of magnetically ordered phases below $T_{\rm N}$= 17.2~K (commensurate antiferromagnetic phase, cAFM), $T_{\rm IT}$= 6.8~K (intermediate incommensurate phase, IT), and $T_{\rm LT}$= 4.8~K (low-temperature phase, LT) is associated with pronounced anomalies in the thermal expansion coefficients. The data imply significant magneto-elastic coupling and evidence of a structural phase transition at $T_{\rm LT}$ . While both cAFM and LT favor structural anisotropy $δ$ between in-plane and out-of-plane length changes, it competes with the IT-type of order, i.e., $δ$ is suppressed in that phase. Notably, finite anisotropy well above $T_{\rm N}$ indicates short-range correlations which are, however, of neither cAFM, IT, nor LT-type. Grüneisen analysis of the ratio of thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat enables the derivation of uniaxial as well as hydrostatic pressure dependencies. While $α$/$c_{\rm p}$ evidences a single dominant energy scale in LT, our data imply precursory fluctuations of a competing phase in IT and cAFM, respectively. Our results suggest the presence of orbital degrees of freedom competing with cAFM and successive evolution of a magnetically and orbitally ordered ground state.

The wealth of structural phases seen in the rare-earth disilicate compounds promises an equally rich range of interesting magnetic properties. We report on the crystal growth by the optical floating zone method of members of the rare-earth disilicate family, $R_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (with $R=$ Er, Ho, and Tm). Through a systematic study, we have optimised the growth conditions for Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$. We have grown, for the first time using the floating zone method, crystal boules of Ho$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Tm$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ compounds. We show that the difficulties encountered in the synthesis of polycrystalline and single crystal samples are due to the similar thermal stability ranges of different rare-earth silicate compounds in the temperature-composition phase diagrams of the $R$-Si-O systems. The addition of a small amount of SiO$_{2}$ excess allowed the amount of impurity phases present in the powder samples to be minimised. The phase composition analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction data collected on the as-grown boules revealed that they were of single phase, except in the case of thulium disilicate, which comprised of two phases. All growths resulted in multi-grain boules, from which sizable single crystals could be isolated. The optimum conditions used for the synthesis and crystal growth of polycrystalline and single crystal $R_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ materials are reported. Specific heat measurements of erbium and thulium disilicate compounds confirm an antiferromagnetic phase transition below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=$ 1.8 K for D-type Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and a Schottky anomaly centered around 3.5 K in C-type Tm$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$, suggesting the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. Magnetic susceptibility data of E-type Ho$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ reveals an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ho spins below $T_\mathrm{N}=$ 2.3 K.

The demagnetizing factor has an important effect on the physics of ferromagnets. For cuboidal samples it depends on susceptibility and the historic problem of determining this function continues to generate theoretical and experimental challenges. To test a recent theory, we measure the magnetic susceptibility of the Ising dipolar ferromagnet LiHoF$_4$, using samples of varying aspect ratio, and we reconsider the demagnetizing transformation necessary to obtain the intrinsic material susceptibility. Our experimental results confirm that the microscopic details of the material significantly affect the transformation, as predicted. In particular, we find that the uniaxial Ising spins require a demagnetizing transformation that differs from the one needed for Heisenberg spins and that use of the wrong demagnetizing transformation would result in unacceptably large errors in the measured physical properties of the system. Our results further shed light on the origin of the mysterious `flat' susceptibility of ordered ferromagnets by demonstrating that the intrinsic susceptibility of the ordered ferromagnetic phase is infinite, regardless of sample shape.

Significant lattice changes occur at the transition from the kagome-ice to the saturated-ice phase, visible in the longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction. A hysteresis opening at temperatures below 0.6 K suggests a first-order transition between the kagome and saturated state. Extremely slow lattice relaxations, triggered by changes of the magnetic field, were observed. These lattice-relaxation effects result from non-equilibrium monopole formation or annihilation processes. The relaxation times extracted from our experiment are in good agreement with theoretical predictions with decay constants of the order of $10{^4}$ s at 0.3 K.

In agreement with the previously published results, the low temperature zero-field structure is characterised by two half-integer propagation vectors, k1=[1/2 0 1/2] and k2= 1/2 1/2 1/2]. However, on application of an external magnetic field, the Bragg peaks corresponding to the zero-field structure lose their intensity rather rapidly and disappear completely in a field of 2.5 kOe. In the intermediate fields, 2.5 to 22.5 kOe, new peaks are observed characterised by the propagation vector k0=[0 0 1/3] corresponding to an up-up-down (uud) structure as well k=0 ferromagnetic peaks. This regime of fields corresponds to a pronounced plateau in the magnetisation curve. Remarkably, the uud structure survives heating to at least 1.4 K, three times higher temperature than the TN of 0.48 K for the zero-field structure. Above 22.5 kOe, the k0 peaks disappear while the k = 0 peaks gain significant intensity indicating an increase in the polarisation of the system. The analysis of the intensities of the field-induced reflections allows for a clear identification of the magnetic structures in both the intermediate and high field regimes.

The description and detection of unconventional magnetic states such as spin liquids is a recurring topic in condensed matter physics. While much of the efforts have traditionally been directed at geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets, recent studies reveal that systems featuring competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions are also promising candidate materials. We find that this competition leads to the notion of special temperatures, analogous to those of gases, at which the competing interactions balance, and the system is quasi-ideal. Although induced by weak perturbing interactions, these special temperatures are surprisingly high and constitute an accessible experimental diagnostic of eventual order or spin liquid properties. The well characterised Hamiltonian and extended low-temperature susceptibility measurement of the canonical frustrated ferromagnet Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enables us to formulate both a phenomenological and microscopic theory of special temperatures for magnets. Other members of this new class of magnets include kapellasite Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ and the spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$.

We observe a disappearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau and a striking change of the magnetic configuration under a moderate do** of the model triangular antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2. The reason is an effective lifting of degeneracy of mean-field ground states by a random potential of impurities, which compensates, in the low temperature limit, the fluctuation contribution to free energy. These results provide a direct experimental confirmation of the fluctuation origin of the ground state in a real frustrated system. The change of the ground state to a least collinear configuration reveals an effective positive biquadratic exchange provided by the structural disorder. On heating, doped samples regain the structure of a pure compound thus allowing for an investigation of the remarkable competition between thermal and structural disorder.

The development of short- and long-range magnetic order induced in a frustrated zig-zag ladder compound SrDy2O4 by an applied field is studied using neutron diffraction techniques. In zero field, SrDy2O4 lacks long-range magnetic order down to temperatures as low as 60 mK, and the observed powder neutron diffraction (PND) patterns are dominated by very broad diffuse scattering peaks. Single crystal neutron diffraction reveals that the zero-field magnetic structure consists of a collection of antiferromagnetic chains running along the c axis and that there is very little correlation between the chains in the ab plane. In an applied magnetic field, the broad diffuse scattering features in PND are gradually replaced by much sharper peaks, however, the pattern remains rather complex, reflecting the highly anisotropic nature of SrDy2O4. Single crystal neutron diffraction shows that a moderate field applied along the b axis induces an up-up-down magnetic order associated with a 1/3-magnetisation plateau, in which magnetic correlation length in the ab plane is significantly increased, but it nevertheless remains finite. The resolution limited k = 0 peaks associated with a ferromagnetic arrangement appear in powder and single crystal neutron diffraction patterns in fields of 2.5 T and above.

A study of the zero field and field induced magnetic states of the frustrated rare earth tetraboride, HoB$_4$, has been carried out using single crystal neutron diffraction complemented by magnetisation measurements. In zero field, HoB$_4$ shows magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$ = 7.1 K to an incommensurate state with a propagation vector ($δ$, $δ$, $δ'$), where $δ$ = 0.02 and $δ'$ = 0.43 and at $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$ = 5.7 K to a non-collinear commensurate antiferromagnetic structure. Polarised neutron diffraction measurements in zero field have revealed that the incommensurate reflections, albeit much reduced in intensity, persist down to 1.5 K despite antiferromagnetic ordering at 5.7 K. At lower temperatures, application of a magnetic field along the $c$-axis initially re-establishes the incommensurate phase as the dominant magnetic state in a narrow field range, just prior to HoB$_4$ ordering with an up-up-down ferrimagnetic structure characterised by the $(h,k,\frac{1}{3})$-type reflections between 18 and 24 kOe. This field range is marked by the previously reported $M/M_{\mathrm{sat}}$= $\frac{1}{3}$ magnetisation plateau, which we also see in our magnetisation measurements. The region between 21 and 33 kOe is characterised by the increase in the intensity of the antiferromagnetic reflections, such as (100), the maximum of which coincides with the appearance of the narrow magnetisation plateau with $M/M_{\mathrm{sat}}\approx$ $\frac{3}{5}$. Further increase of the magnetic field results in the stabilisation of a polarised state above 33 kOe, while the incommensurate reflections are clearly present in all fields up to 59 kOe. We propose the $H-T$ phase diagram of HoB$_4$ for the $H \parallel c$ containing both stationary and transitionary magnetic phases which overlap and show significant history dependence.

We investigate spin correlations in the dipolar Heisenberg antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7 using polarised neutron-scattering measurements in the correlated paramagnetic regime. Using Monte Carlo methods, we show that our data are sensitive to weak further-neighbour exchange interactions of magnitude ~0.5% of the nearest-neighbour interaction, and are compatible with either antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour interactions, or ferromagnetic third-neighbour interactions that connect spins across hexagonal loops. Calculations of the magnetic scattering intensity reveal rods of diffuse scattering along [111] reciprocal-space directions, which we explain in terms of strong antiferromagnetic correlations parallel to the set of <110> directions that connect a given spin with its nearest neighbours. Finally, we demonstrate that the spin correlations in Gd2Sn2O7 are highly anisotropic, and correlations parallel to third-neighbour separations are particularly sensitive to critical fluctuations associated with incipient long-range order.

SrEr2O4 is a geometrically frustrated magnet which demonstrates rather unusual properties at low temperatures including a coexistence of long- and short-range magnetic order, characterized by two different propagation vectors. In the present work, the effects of crystal fields (CF) in this compound containing four magnetically inequivalent erbium sublattices are investigated experimentally and theoretically. We combine the measurements of the CF levels of the Er3+ ions made on a powder sample of SrEr2O4 using neutron spectroscopy with site-selective optical and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements performed on single crystal samples of the lightly Er-doped nonmagnetic analogue, SrY2O4. Two sets of CF parameters corresponding to the Er3+ ions at the crystallographically inequivalent lattice sites are derived which fit all the available experimental data well, including the magnetization and dc susceptibility data for both lightly doped and concentrated samples.

The frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ has an unusual partially-ordered magnetic structure at the lowest measurable temperatures. This structure is currently believed to involve four magnetic propagation vectors $\mathbf{k}\in \langle \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \rangle^*$ in a cubic 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure, based on analysis of magnetic diffuse-scattering data [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16, L321 (2004)]. Here, we present three pieces of evidence against the 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. First, we report single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements as a function of applied magnetic field, which are consistent with the selective field-induced population of non-cubic magnetic domains. Second, we present evidence from high-resolution powder neutron-diffraction measurements that rhombohedral strains exist within magnetic domains, which may be generated by magneto-elastic coupling only for the alternative 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. Finally, we show that the argument previously used to rule out the 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure is flawed, and demonstrate that magnetic diffuse-scattering data can actually be fitted quantitatively by a 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure in which spin fluctuations on ordered and disordered magnetic sites are strongly coupled. Our results provide an experimental foundation on which to base theoretical descriptions of partially-ordered states.

Powder x-ray diffraction analysis confirms that Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ adopts the pyrochlore structure. Room-temperature x-ray diffraction and time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments show that the crystals are stoichiometric in composition with no measurable site disorder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering at temperatures down to 0.5 K. Fits to the magnetic susceptibility data using a Curie-Weiss law reveal a ferromagnetic coupling between the Nd moments. Magnetization versus field measurements show a local Ising anisotropy along the <111> axes of the Nd$^{3+}$ ions in the ground state. Specific heat versus temperature measurements in zero applied magnetic field indicate the presence of a thermal anomaly below $T\sim7$ K, but no evidence of magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.5 K. The experimental temperature dependence of the single-crystal bulk dc susceptibility and isothermal magnetization are analyzed using crystal field theory and the crystal field parameters and exchange coupling constants determined.

We show that the degree of canting is accurately predicted by the standard Hamiltonian which includes the dipolar interaction. The inelastic scattering is dominated at large momentum transfers by a band of almost dispersionless excitations. We show that these correspond to the spin waves localized on ten site rings, expected for a system described by a nearest neighbor interaction, and that the spectrum at high fields B>1.8 T is well-described by a spin wave theory. The phase for fields <1.8 T is characterized by an antiferromagnetic Bragg peak at (210) and an incommensurate peak.

We report on a heat capacity study of high quality single crystal samples of \lcvo\ -- a frustrated spin $S=1/2$ chain system -- in magnetic field amounting to 3/4 of the saturation field. At low fields up to about 7~T, a linear temperature dependence of the specific heat, $C_p\propto T$, resulting from 1D magnetic correlations in the spin chains is followed upon cooling by a sharp lambda anomaly of the transition into a 3D helical phase with $C_p\propto T^3$ behavior at low temperature. The transition from a spin liquid into a spin-modulated (SM) phase at higher fields occurs via a hump-like anomaly which, as the temperature decreases further turns into a $C_p\propto T^2$ law distinctive for a quasi-2D system. We suggest an explanation for how nonmagnetic defects in the Cu$^{2+}$ chains can suppress 3D long-range ordering in the SM phase and leave it undisturbed in a helical phase.

We report ultrasound studies of spin-lattice and single-ion effects in the spin-ice materials Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (DTO) and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (HTO) across a broad field range up to 60 T, covering phase transformations, interactions with low-energy magnetic excitations, as well as single-ion effects. In particular, a sharp dip observed in the sound attenuation in DTO at the gas-liquid transition of the magnetic monopoles is explained based on an approach involving negative relaxation processes. Furthermore, quasi-periodic peaks in the acoustic properties of DTO due to non-equilibrium processes are found to be strongly affected by {\em macroscopic} thermal-coupling conditions: the thermal runaway observed in previous studies in DTO can be suppressed altogether by immersing the sample in liquid helium. Crystal-electric-field effects having higher energy scale lead to a renormalization of the sound velocity and sound attenuation at very high magnetic fields. We analyze our observations using an approach based on an analysis of exchange-striction couplings and single-ion effects.

A study of the magnetic properties of the frustrated rare earth oxide SrGd2O4 has been completed using bulk property measurements of magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat on single crystal samples. Two zero-field phase transitions have been identified at 2.73 and 0.48 K. For the field, H, applied along the a and b axes, a single boundary is identified that delineates the transition from a low field, low temperature magnetically ordered regime to a high field, high temperature paramagnetic phase. Several field-induced transitions, however, have been observed with H || c. The measurements have been used to map out the magnetic phase diagram of SrGd2O4, suggesting that it is a complex system with several competing magnetic interactions. The low-temperature magnetic behavior of SrGd2O4 is very different compared to the other SrLn2O4 (Ln = Lanthanide) compounds, even though all of the SrLn2O4 compounds are isostructural, with the magnetic ions forming a low-dimensional lattice of zigzag chains that run along the c axis. The differences are likely to be due to the fact that in the ground state Gd3+ has zero orbital angular momentum and therefore the spin-orbit interactions, which are crucial for other SrLn2O4 compounds, can largely be neglected. Instead, given the relatively short Gd3+-Gd3+ distances in SrGd2O4, dipolar interactions must be taken into account for this antiferromagnet alongside the Heisenberg exchange terms.

Several crystals have been produced starting with varying levels of excess of Pr6O11 to compensate for the loss of Pr2O3 during the growth process. X-ray diffraction analysis of the crystals shows that the Pr composition in our crystals, as determined by the Pr site occupancy in the pyrochlore structure, is always slightly less than 1. Fits to the magnetic sus-ceptibility data below 10 K using a Curie-Weiss law reveal an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Pr moments, with an estimated Weiss temperature of ΘW = -2.5 K and an effective moment for the Pr3+ of μeff = 2.5 μB. These compounds consisting of hexagons and triangles are affected by geometrical frustration and therefore exhibit its characteristic features, such as a significant reduction of magnetic ordering temperatures and complex phase diagrams in an applied field. Some of the observed features appear to be rather remarkable even in the context of the unusual behavior associated with geometrically frustrated magnetic systems. Of particular interest is the coexistence at the lowest temperature of different magnetic structures (exhibiting either long or short-range order) characterized by different propagation vectors in materials without significant chemical or structural disorder.

We present polarised-neutron diffraction measurements of the Ising-like spin-chain compound Ca3Co2O6 above and below the magnetic ordering temperature TN. Below TN, a clear evolution from a single-phase spin-density wave (SDW) structure to a mixture of SDW and commensurate antiferromagnet (CAFM) structures is observed on cooling. For a rapidly-cooled sample, the majority phase at low temperature is the SDW, while if the cooling is performed sufficiently slowly, then the SDW and the CAFM structure coexist between 1.5 and 10 K. Above TN, we use Monte Carlo methods to analyse the magnetic diffuse scattering data. We show that both intra- and inter-chain correlations persist above TN, but are essentially decoupled. Intra-chain correlations resemble the ferromagnetic Ising model, while inter-chain correlations resemble the frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. Using previously-published bulk property measurements and our neutron diffraction data, we obtain values of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and the single-ion anisotropy.

SrHo2O4 is a geometrically frustrated magnet in which the magnetic Ho3+ ions form honeycomb layers connected through a network of zigzag chains. At low-temperature two distinct types of short-range magnetic order can be inferred from single crystal diffraction data, collected using both polarized and unpolarized neutrons. In the (hk0) plane the diffuse scattering is most noticeable around the k = 0 positions and its intensity rapidly increases at temperatures below 0.7 K. In addition, planes of diffuse scattering at Q = (hk +/- l/2) are visible at temperatures as high as 4.5 K. These planes coexist with the broad peaks of diffuse scattering in the (hk0) plane at low-temperatures. Correlation lengths associated with the broad peaks are L ~ 150 Å in the a-b plane and L ~ 190 Å along c axis, while the correlation length associated with the diffuse scattering planes is L ~ 230 Å along the c axis at the lowest temperature. Both types of diffuse scattering are elastic in nature. The highly unusual coexistance of the two types of diffuse scattering in SrHo2O4 is likely to be the result of the presence of two crystallographically inequivalent sites for Ho3+ in the unit cell.

The sound velocity and the sound attenuation exhibit a number of anomalies versus applied magnetic field for temperatures below the "freezing" temperature of ~500 mK. These robust anomalies can be seen for longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes for different field directions. The anomalies show a broad hysteresis. Most notable are peaks in the sound velocity, which exhibit two distinct regimes: an intrinsic (extrinsic) one in which the data collapse for different sweep rates when plotted as function of field strength (time). We discuss our observations in context of the emergent quasiparticles which govern the low-temperature dynamics of the spin ice.

The observed ordering temperatures are significantly lower than the Curie-Weiss temperatures, θ_{CW}, obtained from the high-temperature linear fits to the 1/χ(T) curves, which implies that these materials are subject to geometric frustration. Strong anisotropy found in the χ(T) curves for a field applied along the different crystallographic directions is also evident in the M(H) curves measured both above and below the ordering temperatures. For all three compounds the magnetisation plateaux at approximately one third of the magnetisation saturation values can be seen for certain directions of applied field, which is indicative of field-induced stabilisation of a collinear {\it two-up one-down} structure.

Single crystal neutron diffraction reveals two distinct components to the magnetic ordering in geometrically frustrated SrEr$_2$O$_4$. One component is a long-range ordered ${\bf k}=0$ structure which appears below $T_N = 0.75$ K. Another component is a short-range incommensurate structure which manifests itself by the presence of a strong diffuse scattering signal. On cooling from higher temperatures down to 0.06 K, the partially ordered component does not undergo a pronounced phase transition. The magnetic moments in the long-range commensurate and short-range incommensurate structures are predominantly pointing along the [001] and [100] axes respectively. The unusual coexistence of two magnetic structures is probed using both unpolarised and XYZ-polarised neutron scattering techniques. This transition occurs over an unprecedented time-scale of several hours and is never complete.

We report magnetization data for several titanium pyrochlore systems measured down to 0.5 K. The measurements, performed on single crystal samples in fields of up to 7 T, have captured the essential elements of the previously reported phase transitions in these compounds and have also revealed additional important features overlooked previously either because of the insufficiently low temperatures used, or due to limitations imposed by polycrystalline samples. For the spin-ice pyrochlores Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7, an unusually slow relaxation of the magnetization has been observed in lower fields, while the magnetization process in higher fields is essentially hysteresis-free and does not depend on sample history. For the XY pyrochlore Er2Ti2O7, the magnetic susceptibility shows nearly diverging behaviour on approach to a critical field, HC = 13.5 kOe, above which the magnetization does not saturate but continues to grow at a significant rate. For the Heisenberg pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7, the magnetic susceptibility shows a pronounced change of slope at both transition temperatures, TN1 = 1.02 K and TN2 = 0.74 K, contrary to the earlier reports.

Measurements of Gd3Ga5O12, grown with isotopically pure Gd, agree well with previous results on samples with naturally abundant Gd, showing no ordering features. In contrast, samples of Gd3Te2Li3O12 and Gd3Al5O12 are found to exhibit clear ordering transitions at 243 mK and 175 mK respectively. The effects of low level disorder are studied through dilution of Gd3+ with non-magnetic Y3+ in Gd3Te2Li3O12. A thorough structural characterization, using X-ray diffraction, is performed on all of the samples studied. We discuss possible explanations for such diverse behavior in very similar systems.

The magnetic phase diagrams are established for two directions of applied field, $H\parallel [100]$ and $H\parallel [111]$. In the magnetically ordered phase observed below $T_N=1.2$ K, the magnetic excitation spectrum consists of a Goldstone mode acquiring an isotropic gap in an applied field, and another mode with a gap softening in the vicinity of a field-induced phase transition. This second-order transition takes place at a critical field $H_c$ above which the magnetization process is accompanied by a canting of the magnetic moments off their local "easy-planes". The specific heat curves for $H\parallel [100]$ ($H\gg H_c$) are well described by a model presuming a single dispersionless excitation mode with the energy gap obtained from the spectroscopic measurements.

The magnetic properties of Co3V2O8 have been studied by single-crystal neutron-diffraction. In zero magnetic field, the observed broadening of the magnetic Bragg peaks suggests the presence of disorder both in the low-temperature ferromagnetic and in the higher-temperature antiferromagnetic state. The field dependence of the intensity and position of the magnetic reflections in Co3V2O8 reveals a complex sequence of phase transitions in this Kagome staircase compound. For H//a, a commensurate-incommensurate-commensurate transition is found in a field of 0.072 T in the antiferromagnetic phase at 7.5 K. For H//c at low-temperature, an applied field induces an unusual transformation from a ferromagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at about 1 T accompanied by a sharp increase in magnetisation.

We present the first neutron inelastic scattering results on the low temperature magnetic state of the three dimensional hyperkagomé compound Gd$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (GGG). GGG is often classified as a strongly frustrated system with a manifold of continuously connected states. However, in contrast to the expectation of a continuum of gap-less excitations above a spin liquid-like ground state our results reveal three distinct inelastic modes found at 0.04(1), 0.12(2) an 0.58(3) meV at 0.06 K. The inelastic modes can be attributed to the magnetic ground state with the lowest and highest energy excitations showing spatial dependencies indicative of dimerized short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Short range correlations, reminiscent of spin liquid-like order, are static within the instrumental resolution (50 $μ$eV) and represent 82% of the spectral weight. Longer range correlations, first observed by Petrenko, et al.\cite{Petrenko1998, develop below 0.14 ~K within the elastic cross section. The short range static correlations and dynamic components survive to high temperatures, comparable to the nearest neighbor exchange interactions. Our results suggest that the ground state of a three dimensional hyperkagomé compound differs distinctly from its frustrated counterparts on a pyrochlore lattice and reveals a juxtaposition of spin liquid order and strong dimerised coupling.

Gd3Ga5O12, (GGG), has an extraordinary magnetic phase diagram, where no long range order is found down to 25 mK despite Θ_CW \approx 2 K. However, long range order is induced by an applied field of around 1 T. Motivated by recent theoretical developments and the experimental results for a closely related hyperkagome system, we have performed neutron diffraction measurements on a single crystal sample of GGG in an applied magnetic field. The measurements reveal that the H-T phase diagram of GGG is much more complicated than previously assumed. The application of an external field at low T results in an intensity change for most of the magnetic peaks which can be divided into three distinct sets: ferromagnetic, commensurate antiferromagnetic, and incommensurate antiferromagnetic. The ferromagnetic peaks (e.g. (112), (440) and (220)) have intensities that increase with the field and saturate at high field. The antiferromagnetic reflections have intensities that grow in low fields, reach a maximum at an intermediate field (apart from the (002) peak which shows two local maxima) and then decrease and disappear above 2 T. These AFM peaks appear, disappear and reach maxima in different fields. We conclude that the competition between magnetic interactions and alternative ground states prevents GGG from ordering in zero field. It is, however, on the verge of ordering and an applied magnetic field can be used to crystallise ordered components. The range of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic propagation vectors found reflects the complex frustration in GGG.

SrEr$_2$O$_4$ has been characterised by low-temperature powder neutron diffraction, as well as single crystal specific heat and magnetisation measurements. Magnetisation measurements show that the magnetic system is highly anisotropic at temperature above ordering. A magnetic field of 280 kOe applied at $T=1.6$ K does not overcome the anisotropic magnetisation and fails to fully saturate the system. Long range antiferromagnetic ordering develops below $T_N=0.75$ K, identified by magnetic Bragg reflections with propagation vector ${\bf k}=0$ and a lambda anomaly in the specific heat. The magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic chains running along the \textit{c} axis, two adjacent chains being stacked antiferromagnetically. The moments point along the \textit{c} direction, but only one of the two crystallographically in-equivalent Er sites has a sizeable ordered magnetic moment, 4.5 $\rm μ_B$ at 0.55 K. The magnetic properties of SrEr$_2$O$_4$ are discussed in terms of the interplay between the low-dimensionality, competing exchange interactions, dipolar interactions and low lying crystal field levels.

Below 25 K, the system orders magnetically with a modulated partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure. We give a description of the magnetic interactions in the system which is consistent with this magnetic structure. Our study also reveals that the long-range magnetic order co-exists with a shorter range order with a correlation length scale of 180 A in the ab plane. Remarkably, on cooling, the volume of material exhibiting short range order increases at the expense of the long-range order.

The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D order. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical predictions found in literature

The deviation of the absorption line from the paramagnetic position ν=γH observed in both compounds below the Curie-Weiss temperature Θ_CW ~ 10 K, suggests an opening up of a gap in the excitation spectra. On cooling to 1.3 K (which is above the ordering transition T_N ~ 1.0 K) the resonance spectrum is transformed into a wide band of excitations with the gap amounting to Δ~ 26 GHz (1.2 K) in Gd2Ti2O7 and 18 GHz (0.8 K) in Gd2Sn2O7. The gaps increase linearly with the external magnetic field. For Gd2Ti2O7 this branch co-exists with an additional nearly paramagnetic line absent in Gd2Sn2O7. These low lying excitations with gaps, which are preformed in the spin-liquid state, may be interpreted as collective spin modes split by the single-ion anisotropy.

The magnetisation and susceptibility curves for Co3V2O8 are analysed in terms of their compatibility with the different ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic structures proposed for this compound. For Ni3V2O8, the phase diagram is extended to magnetic fields higher than previously reported; for a field applied along the a-axis, the low temperature incommensurate phase is found to close at around 90 kOe.
