In this last of a series of three papers on the development of an advanced solid-state neutron polarizer, we present the final construction of the polarizer and the results of its commissioning. The polarizer uses spin-selective reflection of neutrons by interfaces coated with polarizing super-mirrors. The polarizer is built entirely in-house for the PF1B cold neutron beam facility at the Institut Max von Laue - Paul Langevin (ILL). It has been installed in the PF1B casemate and tested at real conditions. The average transmission for the "good" spin component is measured to be >30 %. The polarization averaged over the capture spectrum reaches a record value of Pn ~ 0.997 for the full angular divergence in the neutron beam, delivered by the H113 neutron guide, and the full wavelength band lambda of 0.3-2.0 nm. This unprecedented performance is due to a series of innovations in the design and fabrication in the following domains: choice of the substrate material, super-mirror and anti-reflecting multilayer coatings, magnetizing field, assembling process. The polarizer is used for user experiments at PF1B since the last reactor cycle in 2020.

Abstract:
We present a precision measurement of the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ in the decay of polarized free neutrons. For the first time, a pulsed cold neutron beam was used for this purpose. By this method, leading sources of systematic uncertainty are suppressed. From the electron spectra we obtain $λ= g_A/g_V = -1.27641(45)_\mathrm{stat}(33)_\mathrm{sys}$ which confirms recent measurements wi…

We present a precision measurement of the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ in the decay of polarized free neutrons. For the first time, a pulsed cold neutron beam was used for this purpose. By this method, leading sources of systematic uncertainty are suppressed. From the electron spectra we obtain $λ= g_A/g_V = -1.27641(45)_\mathrm{stat}(33)_\mathrm{sys}$ which confirms recent measurements with improved precision. This corresponds to a value of the parity violating beta asymmetry parameter of $A_0 = -0.11985(17)_\mathrm{stat}(12)_\mathrm{sys}$. We discuss implications on the CKM matrix element $V_{ud}$ and derive a limit on left-handed tensor interaction.

We report on a new measurement of the neutron beta-asymmetry parameter $A$ with the instrument \perkeo. Main advancements are the high neutron polarization of $P = 99.7(1)%$ from a novel arrangement of super mirror polarizers and reduced background from improvements in beam line and shielding. Leading corrections were thus reduced by a factor of 4, pushing them below the level of statistical error and resulting in a significant reduction of systematic uncertainty compared to our previous experiments. From the result $A_0 = -0.11996(58)$, we derive the ratio of the axial-vector to the vector coupling constant $λ= g_\mathrm{A}/g_\mathrm{V} = -1.2767(16)$

We have observed depolarization effects when high intensity cold neutron beams are incident on alkali-metal-spin-exchange polarized He-3 cells used as neutron spin filters. This was first observed as a reduction of the maximum attainable He-3 polarization and was attributed to a decrease of alkali-metal polarization, which led us to directly measure alkali-metal polarization and spin relaxation over a range of neutron fluxes at LANSCE and ILL. The data reveal a new alkali-metal spin-relaxation mechanism that approximately scales as the square root of the neutron capture-flux density incident on the cell. This is consistent with an effect proportional to the recombination-limited ion concentration, but is much larger than expected from earlier work.

Experiments were carried out at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (Gatchina, Russia) and at the Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France). We employed an ionisation chamber in a configuration allowing us to suppress the left-right asymmetry well below 10^(-8). A test for a false asymmetry due to eventual target impurities ("zero test") resulted in the value (0.0+-0.5)x10^(-8). As final result we obtained P-odd effect (-8.6+-2.0)x10^(-8).

A prototype experiment to measure the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) by spin-rotation in a non-centrosymmetric crystal in Laue geometry was carried out in order to investigate the statistical sensitivity and systematic effects of the method. The statistical sensitivity to the nEDM was about $6\cdot 10^{-24}$ e$\cdot $cm per day and can be improved by one order of magnitude for the full scale setup. Systematics was limited by the homogeneity of the magnetic field in the crystal region and by a new kind of spin rotation effect. We attribute this effect to a difference of the two Bloch waves amplitudes in the crystal, which is caused by the presence of a small crystal deformation due to a temperature gradient. In a revised scheme of the experiment, this effect could be exploited for a purposeful manipulation of the Bloch waves.

Beam divergence is no larger than beam divergence from a conventional Ni coated guide. A model is developed that permits rapid calculation of beam profiles and absolute event rates from such a beam. We propose a procedure that permits inter-comparability of the main features of beams emitted from ballistic or conventional neutron guides.

Abstract:
The lowest stationary quantum state of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field is identified in the measurement of neutron transmission between a horizontal mirror on the bottom and an absorber on top. Such an assembly is not transparent for neutrons if the absorber height is smaller than the "height" of the lowest quantum state.
