Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM.

Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level.

In some conditions, bacteria self-organise into biofilms, supracellular structures made of a self-produced embedding matrix, mainly composed on polysaccharides, DNA, proteins and lipids. It is known that bacteria change their colony/matrix ratio in the presence of external stimuli such as hydrodynamic stress. However, little is still known about the molecular mechanisms driving this self-adaptation. In this work, we monitor structural features of Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilms grown with and without hydrodynamic stress. Our measurements show that the hydrodynamic stress concomitantly increases the cell density population and the matrix production. At short growth timescales, the matrix mediates a weak cell-cell attractive interaction due to the depletion forces originated by the polymer constituents. Using a population dynamics model, we conclude that hydrodynamic stress causes a faster diffusion of nutrients and a higher incorporation of planktonic bacteria to the already formed microcolonies. This results in the formation of more mechanically stable biofilms due to an increase of the number of crosslinks, as shown by computer simulations. The mechanical stability also lies on a change in the chemical compositions of the matrix, which becomes enriched in carbohydrates, known to display adhering properties. Overall, we demonstrate that bacteria are capable of self-adapting to hostile hydrodynamic stress by tailoring the biofilm chemical composition, thus affecting both the mesoscale structure of the matrix and its viscoelastic properties that ultimately regulate the bacteria-polymer interactions.

This article shows the importance of flow compressibility on the heat transfer in confined im**ing jets, and how it is driven by both the Mach number and the wall heat-flux. Hence, we present a collection of cases at several Mach numbers with different heat-flux values applied at the im**ement wall. The wall temperature scales linearly with the imposed heat-flux and the adiabatic wall temperature is found to be purely governed by the flow compression. Especially for high heat-flux values, the non-constant wall temperature induces considerable differences in the thermal conductivity of the fluid. This phenomenon has to date not been discussed and it strongly modulates the Nusselt number. In contrast, the heat transfer coefficient is independent of the varying thermal properties of the fluid and the wall heat-flux. Furthermore, we introduce the im**ement efficiency, which highlights the areas of the wall where the temperature is influenced by compressibility effects. This parameter shows how the contribution of the flow compression to raising the wall temperature becomes more dominant as the heat-flux decreases. Thus, knowing the adiabatic wall temperature is indispensable for obtaining the correct heat transfer coefficient when low heat-flux values are used, even at low Mach numbers. Lastly, a detailed analysis of the dilatation field also shows how the compressibility effects only affect the heat transfer in the vicinity of the stagnation point. These compressibility effects decay rapidly further away from the flow im**ement, and the density changes along the develo** boundary layer are caused instead by variable inertia effects.

We also define and describe a transversal dimension and its corresponding Fredholm theory in terms of anisotropic Sobolev estimates, valid also for similar bundles with nonunimodular structure group.

Here we investigate the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian on $M$. We show that it is essentially self-adjoint on its restriction to compactly supported smooth forms. Moreover we relate its spectrum to the existence of generalized eigenforms: an energy belongs to $σ(\square)$ if there is a subexponentially bounded generalized eigenform for this energy. Vice versa, there is an expansion in terms of these well-behaved eigenforms so that, spectrally, almost every energy comes with such a generalized eigenform.

In this work, we show that if $G$ acts by holomorphic transformations in $M$, then the Laplacian $\square=\bar\partial^{*}\bar\partial+\bar\partial\bar\partial^{*}$ on $M$ has the following properties: The kernel of $\square$ restricted to the forms $Λ^{p,q}$ with $q>0$ is a closed, $G$-invariant subspace in $L^{2}(M,Λ^{p,q})$ of finite $G$-dimension. Secondly, we show that if $q>0$, then the image of $\square$ contains a closed, $G$-invariant subspace of finite codimension in $L^{2}(M,Λ^{p,q})$. These two properties taken together amount to saying that $\square$ is a $G$-Fredholm operator. In similar circumstances, the boundary Laplacian $\square_b$ has similar properties.

We present the UBVRI light curves of the Type Ia supernova SN 1998bu which appeared in the nearby galaxy M96 (NGC 3368). M96 is a spiral galaxy in the Leo I group which has a Cepheid-based distance. Our photometry allows us to calculate the absolute magnitude and reddening of this supernova. These data, when combined with measurements of the four other well-observed supernovae with Cepheid based distances, allow us to calculate the Hubble constant with respect to the Hubble flow defined by the distant Calan/Tololo Type Ia sample. We find a Hubble constant of 64.0 +/- 2.2(internal) +/- 3.5(external) km/s/Mpc, consistent with most previous estimates based on Type Ia supernovae. We note that the two well-observed Type Ia supernovae in Fornax, if placed at the Cepheid distance to the possible Fornax spiral NGC 1365, are apparently too faint with respect to the Calan/Tololo sample calibrated with the five Type Ia supernovae with Cepheid distances to the host galaxies.
