Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) refers to the virtualization of base station functionalities by means of cloud computing. This results in a novel cellular architecture in which low-cost wireless access points, known as radio units (RUs) or remote radio heads (RRHs), are centrally managed by a reconfigurable centralized "cloud", or central, unit (CU). C-RAN allows operators to reduce the capital and operating expenses needed to deploy and maintain dense heterogeneous networks. This critical advantage, along with spectral efficiency, statistical multiplexing and load balancing gains, make C-RAN well positioned to be one of the key technologies in the development of 5G systems. In this paper, a succinct overview is presented regarding the state of the art on the research on C-RAN with emphasis on fronthaul compression, baseband processing, medium access control, resource allocation, system-level considerations and standardization efforts.

The study considers a three-node, two-way relaying network (TWRN) over a multi-carrier system, aiming to minimize the total power consumption of all the transmit and receiver activities. By employing digital network coding (DNC) and physical-layer network coding (PNC), respectively, as well as a novel hybrid PNC/DNC switching scheme, the total transmission power of the considered multi-carrier TWRN system is firstly analyzed; and the derived analytical expressions are then used to formulate a set of nonconvex optimization problems. We will show how those nonconvex functions are convexified for better computational tracbility. It is observed in the numerical results that, the PNC scheme generally consumes less power than DNC but becomes worse in the very low SNR regime. The proposed hybrid PNC/DNC switching scheme that takes advantage of both, is shown to outperform in all SNR regimes.

This paper studies an untrusted relay channel, in which the destination sends artificial noise simultaneously with the source sending a message to the relay, in order to protect the source's confidential message. The traditional amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme shows poor performance in this situation because of the interference power dilemma: providing better security by using stronger artificial noise will decrease the confidential message power from the relay to the destination. To solve this problem, a modulo-and-forward (MF) operation at the relay with nested lattice encoding at the source is proposed. For this system with full channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), theoretical analysis shows that the proposed MF scheme approaches the secrecy capacity within 1/2 bit for any channel realization, and hence achieves full generalized security degrees of freedom (G-SDoF). In contrast, the AF scheme can only achieve a small fraction of the G-SDoF. For this system without any CSIT, the total outage event, defined as either connection outage or secrecy outage, is introduced. Based on this total outage definition, analysis shows that the proposed MF scheme achieves the full generalized secure diversity gain (G-SDG) of order one. On the other hand, the AF scheme can only achieve a G-SDG of 1/2 at most.

We consider clustering player behavior and learning the optimal team composition for multiplayer online games. The goal is to determine a set of descriptive play style grou**s and learn a predictor for win/loss outcomes. The predictor takes in as input the play styles of the participants in each team; i.e., the various team compositions in a game. Our framework uses unsupervised learning to find behavior clusters, which are, in turn, used with classification algorithms to learn the outcome predictor. For our numerical experiments, we consider League of Legends, a popular team-based role-playing game developed by Riot Games. We observe the learned clusters to not only corroborate well with game knowledge, but also provide insights surprising to expert players. We also demonstrate that game outcomes can be predicted with fairly high accuracy given team composition-based features.

Heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (HCRANs) are potential solutions to improve both spectral and energy efficiencies by embedding cloud computing into heterogeneous networks (HetNets). The interference among remote radio heads (RRHs) can be suppressed with centralized cooperative processing in the base band unit (BBU) pool, while the intertier interference between RRHs and macro base stations (MBSs) is still challenging in H-CRANs. In this paper, to mitigate this inter-tier interference, a contract-based interference coordination framework is proposed, where three scheduling schemes are involved, and the downlink transmission interval is divided into three phases accordingly. The core idea of the proposed framework is that the BBU pool covering all RRHs is selected as the principal that would offer a contract to the MBS, and the MBS as the agent decides whether to accept the contract or not according to an individual rational constraint. An optimal contract design that maximizes the rate-based utility is derived when perfect channel state information (CSI) is acquired at both principal and agent. Furthermore, contract optimization under the situation where only the partial CSI can be obtained from practical channel estimation is addressed as well. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to confirm the analysis, and simulation results show that the proposed framework can significantly increase the transmission data rates over baselines, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed contract-based solution.

In this paper, we consider the delay-aware fronthaul allocation problem for C-RANs. The stochastic optimization problem is formulated as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process. To deal with the curse of dimensionality, we derive a closed-form approximate priority function and the associated error bound using perturbation analysis. Based on the closed-form approximate priority function, we propose a low-complexity delay-aware fronthaul allocation algorithm solving the per-stage optimization problem. The proposed solution is further shown to be asymptotically optimal for sufficiently small cross link path gains. Finally, the proposed fronthaul allocation algorithm is compared with various baselines through simulations, and it is shown that significant performance gain can be achieved.

The non-solenoid start-up technique reported here relies on a double mode conversion for electron Bernstein wave (EBW) excitation. It consists of the mode conversion of the ordinary mode, entering the plasma from the low field side of the tokamak, into the extraordinary (X) mode at a mirror-polarizer located at the high field side. The X mode propagates back to the plasma, passes through electron cyclotron resonance and experiences a subsequent X to EBW mode conversion near the upper hybrid resonance. Finally the excited EBW mode is totally absorbed at the Doppler shifted electron cyclotron resonance. The absorption of EBW remains high even in cold rarefied plasmas. Furthermore, EBW can generate significant plasma current giving the prospect of a fully solenoid-free plasma start-up. First experiments using this scheme were carried out on MAST [V. Shevchenko et al, Nuclear Fusion 50, 022004 (2010)]. Plasma currents up to 33 kA have been achieved using 28 GHz 100kW 90ms RF pulses. Recently experimental results were extended to longer RF pulses showing further increase of plasma currents generated by RF power alone. A record current of 73kA has been achieved with 450ms RF pulse of similar power. The current drive enhancement was mainly achieved due to RF pulse extension and further optimisation of the start-up scenario.

We have constrained possible new interactions which produce nonrelativistic potentials between polarized neutrons and unpolarized matter proportional to $α\vecσ\cdot\vec{v}$ where $\vecσ$ is the neutron spin and $\vec{v}$ is the relative velocity. We use existing data from laboratory measurements on the very long $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$ spin relaxation times of polarized $^{3}$He gas in glass cells.Using the best available measured $T_{2}$ of polarized $^{3}$He gas atoms as the polarized source and the earth as an unpolarized source, we obtain constraints on two new interactions. We present a new experimental upper bound on possible vector-axial-vector($V_{VA}$) type interactions for ranges between $1\sim10^{8}$m. In combination with previous results, we set the most stringent experiment limits on $g_{V}g_{A}$ ranging from $\simμ$m to $\sim10^{8}$m. We also report what is to our knowledge the first experimental upper limit on the possible torsion fields induced by the earth on its surface. Dedicated experiments could further improve these bounds by a factor of $\sim100$. Our method of analysis also makes it possible to probe many velocity dependent interactions which depend on the spins of both neutrons and other particles which have never been searched for before experimentally.

User cooperation based multi-hop wireless communication networks (MH-WCNs) as the key communication technological component of mobile social networks (MSNs) should be exploited to enhance the capability of accumulating data rates and extending coverage flexibly. As one of the most promising and efficient user cooperation techniques, network coding can increase the potential cooperation performance gains among selfishly driven users in MSNs. To take full advantages of network coding in MH-WCNs, a network coding transmission strategy and its corresponding channel estimation technique are studied in this paper. Particularly, a $4-$hop network coding transmission strategy is presented first, followed by an extension strategy for the arbitrary $2N-$hop scenario ($N\geq 2$). The linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) and maximum-likelihood (ML) channel estimation methods are designed to improve the transmission quality in MH-WCNs. Closed form expressions in terms of the mean squared error (MSE) for the LMMSE channel estimation method are derived, which allows the design of the optimal training sequence. Unlike the LMMSE method, it is difficult to obtain closed-form MSE expressions for the nonlinear ML channel estimation method. In order to accomplish optimal training sequence design for the ML method, the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is employed. Numerical results are provided to corroborate the proposed analysis, and the results demonstrate that the analysis is accurate and the proposed methods are effective.

To mitigate the inter-tier interference and improve EE performances in H-CRANs, characterizing user association with RRH/HPN is considered in this paper, and the traditional soft fractional frequency reuse (S-FFR) is enhanced. Based on the RRH/HPN association constraint and the enhanced S-FFR, an energy-efficient optimization problem with the resource assignment and power allocation for the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based H-CRANs is formulated as a non-convex objective function. To deal with the non-convexity, an equivalent convex feasibility problem is reformulated, and closedform expressions for the energy-efficient resource allocation solution to jointly allocate the resource block and transmit power are derived by the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Simulation results confirm that the H-CRAN architecture and the corresponding resource allocation solution can enhance the energy efficiency significantly.

The simultaneous wireless transfer of information and power with the help of a relay equipped with multiple antennas is considered in this letter, where a harvest-and-forward strategy is proposed. In particular, the relay harvests energy and obtains information from the source with the radio-frequent signals by jointly using the antenna selection (AS) and power splitting (PS) techniques, and then the processed information is amplified and forwarded to the destination relying on the harvested energy. This letter jointly optimizes AS and PS to maximize the achievable rate for the proposed strategy. Considering the joint optimization is according to the non-convex problem, a two-stage procedure is proposed to determine the optimal ratio of received signal power split for energy harvesting, and the optimized antenna set engaged in information forwarding. To decrease the training overhead and improve the channel estimation accuracy in uplink cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), a superimposed-segment training design is proposed. The core idea of the proposal is that each mobile station superimposes a periodic training sequence on the data signal, and each remote radio heads prepends a separate pilot to the received signal before forwarding it to the centralized base band unit pool. Moreover, a complex-exponential basis-expansion-model based channel estimation algorithm to maximize a posteriori probability is developed, where the basis-expansion-model coefficients of access links (ALs) and the channel fading of wireless backhaul links are first obtained, after which the time-domain channel samples of ALs are restored in terms of maximizing the average effective signal-to-noise ratio (AESNR). Simulation results show that the proposed channel estimation algorithm can effectively decrease the estimation mean square error and increase the AESNR in C-RANs, thus significantly outperforming the existing solutions.

This paper investigates pilot-aided channel estimation for two-way relay networks (TWRNs) in the presence of synchronization errors between the two sources. The unpredictable synchronization error leads to time domain offset and signal arriving order (SAO) ambiguity when two signals sent from two sources are superimposed at the relay. A two-step channel estimation algorithm is first proposed, in which the linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) estimator is used to obtain initial channel estimates based on pilot symbols and a linear minimum error probability (LMEP) estimator is then developed to update these estimates. Optimal training sequences and power allocation at the relay are designed to further improve the performance for LMMSE based initial channel estimation. To tackle the SAO ambiguity problem, the generalized likelihood ratio testing (GLRT) method is applied and an upper bound on the SAO detection error probability is derived. By using the SAO information, a scaled LMEP estimation algorithm is proposed to compensate the performance degradation caused by SAO detection error. Simulation results show that the proposed estimation algorithms can effectively mitigate the negative effects caused by asynchronous transmissions in TWRNs, thus significantly outperforming the existing channel estimation algorithms.

The cloud radio access network (C-RAN) provides high spectral and energy efficiency performances, low expenditures and intelligent centralized system structures to operators, which has attracted intense interests in both academia and industry. In this paper, a hybrid coordinated multi-point transmission (H-CoMP) scheme is designed for the downlink transmission in C-RANs, which fulfills the flexible tradeoff between cooperation gain and fronthaul consumption. The queue-aware power and rate allocation with constraints of average fronthaul consumption for the delay-sensitive traffic are formulated as an infinite horizon constrained partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP), which takes both the urgent queue state information (QSI) and the imperfect channel state information at transmitters (CSIT) into account. To deal with the curse of dimensionality involved with the equivalent Bellman equation, the linear approximation of post-decision value functions is utilized. A stochastic gradient algorithm is presented to allocate the queue-aware power and transmission rate with H-CoMP, which is robust against unpredicted traffic arrivals and uncertainties caused by the imperfect CSIT. Furthermore, to substantially reduce the computing complexity, an online learning algorithm is proposed to estimate the per-queue post-decision value functions and update the Lagrange multipliers. The simulation results demonstrate performance gains of the proposed stochastic gradient algorithms, and confirm the asymptotical convergence of the proposed online learning algorithm.

In this letter, the single nearest and N--nearest RRH association strategies are presented, and the corresponding impact on the ergodic capacity of C-RANs is analyzed, where RRHs are distributed according to a stationary point process. Closed-form expressions for the ergodic capacity of the proposed RRH association strategies are derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the derived uplink closed-form capacity expressions are accurate. Furthermore, the analysis and simulation results show that the ergodic capacity gain is not linear with either the RRH density or the number of antenna per RRH. The ergodic capacity gain from the RRH density is larger than that from the number of antennas per RRH,which indicates that the association number of the RRH should not be bigger than 4 to balance the performance gain and the implementation cost.

To mitigate the severe inter-tier interference and enhance limited cooperative gains resulting from the constrained and non-ideal transmissions between adjacent base stations in heterogeneous networks (HetNets), heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) are proposed as cost-efficient potential solutions through incorporating the cloud computing into HetNets. In this article, state-of-the-art research achievements and challenges on H-CRANs are surveyed. In particular, we discuss issues of system architectures, spectral and energy efficiency performances, and promising key techniques. A great emphasis is given towards promising key techniques in H-CRANs to improve both spectral and energy efficiencies, including cloud computing based coordinated multi-point transmission and reception, large-scale cooperative multiple antenna, cloud computing based cooperative radio resource management, and cloud computing based self-organizing network in the cloud converging scenarios. The major challenges and open issues in terms of theoretical performance with stochastic geometry, fronthaul constrained resource allocation, and standard development that may block the promotion of H-CRANs are discussed as well.

Abstract:
More than 1000 complete or near-complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences have been deposited in GenBank for eight common domestic animals (i.e. cattle, dog, goat, horse, pig, sheep, yak and chicken) and their close wild ancestors or relatives. More than 1000 complete or near-complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences have been deposited in GenBank for eight common domestic animals (i.e. cattle, dog, goat, horse, pig, sheep, yak and chicken) and their close wild ancestors or relatives. Nevertheless, few efforts have been performed to evaluate the sequence data quality, which heavily impact the original conclusion. Herein, we conducted a phylogenetic survey of these complete or near-complete mtDNA sequences based on mtDNA haplogroup trees for the eight animals. We show that, errors due to artificial recombination, surplus of mutations, and phantom mutations, do exist in 14.5% (194/1342) of mtDNA sequences and shall be treated with wide caution. We propose some caveats for mtDNA studies of domestic animals in the future.

To such a scenario, all the existing works which can achieve full diversity order are based on the antenna/relay selection, where the difficulty to design the beamforming lies in the fact that a single beamformer needs to serve two destinations. In this paper, we propose a new full-diversity beamforming scheme which ensures that the relay signals are coherently combined at both destinations. Both analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate that this proposed scheme can outperform the existing one based on the antenna selection.

We propose a scheme for detecting noncommutative feature of the non-Abelian geometric phase in circuit QED, which involves three transmon qubits capacitively coupled to an one-dimensional transmission line resonator. By controlling the external magnetic flux of the transmon qubits, we can obtain an effective tripod interaction of our circuit QED setup. The noncommutative feature of the non-Abelian geometric phase is manifested that for an initial state undergo two specific loops in different order will result in different final states. Our numerical calculations show that this difference can be unambiguously detected in the proposed system.

Abstract:
We present a novel approach to study eigenvalues of deformed random matrices. This approach applies to many deformed Gaussian matrix models; two such models are studied in detail: the deformed GOE and the spiked population model.

We describe the evolution of double degenerate binary systems, consisting of components obeying the zero temperature mass radius relationship for white dwarf stars, from the onset of mass transfer to one of several possible outcomes including merger, tidal disruption of the donor, or survival as a semi-detached AM CVn system. We use a combination of analytic solutions and numerical integrations of the standard orbit-averaged first-order evolution equations, including direct impact accretion and the evolution of the components due to mass exchange. We include also the effects of mass-loss during super-critical (super-Eddington) mass transfer and the tidal and advective exchanges of angular momentum between the binary components. We cover much the same ground as Marsh et al.(2004) with the additional effects of the advective or consequential angular momentum from the donor and its tidal coupling to the orbit which is expected to be stronger than that of the accretor. With the caveat that our formalism does not include an explicit treatment of common envelope phases, our results suggest that a larger fraction of detached double white dwarfs than what has been hitherto assumed, survive the onset of mass transfer, even if this mass transfer is initially unstable and rises to super-Eddington levels. In addition, as a consequence of the tidal coupling, systems that come into contact near the mass transfer instability boundary undergo a phase of oscillation cycles in their orbital period (and other system parameters). Much of the formalism developed here would also apply to other mass-transferring binaries, and in particular to cataclysmic variables and Algol systems.

Abstract:
Proximity effect on field-effect characteristic (FEC) in double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) is investigated. In a semiconductor-metal (S-M) DWCNT, the penetration of electron wavefunctions in the metallic shell to the semiconducting shell turns the original semiconducting tube into a metal with a non-zero local density of states at the Fermi level. By using a two-band tight-binding model on a ladder of two legs, it is demonstrated that anomalous FEC observed in so-called S-M type DWCNTs can be fully understood by the proximity effect of metallic phases.

We present new interferometric HI and CO (1-0) observations of the luminous infrared source, Arp 256. Arp 256 consists of two spiral galaxies in an early stage of merging, with a projected nuclear separation of 29 kpc (54") and an infrared luminosity of 2.0E11 L_sun. Despite the large separation of the galaxies' nuclei and mildly disrupted stellar components, the HI disks are found to be strongly disrupted, and the southern galaxy in Arp 256 shows an elevated star formation efficiency, which is consistent with a nuclear starburst. Both of these results run contrary to expectations, posing interesting questions on the physical mechanisms involved in stimulating star formation during an interaction.
