In the extant literature, there has been discussion on the drivers and motivations of minorities to enter the software industry. For example, universities have invested in more diverse imagery for years to attract a more diverse pool of students. However, in our research, we consider whether we understand why students choose their current major and how they did in the beginning decided to apply to study software engineering. We were also interested in learning if there could be some signs that would help us in marketing to get more women into tech. We approached the topic via an online survey (N = 78) sent to the university students of software engineering in Finland. Our results show that, on average, women apply later to software engineering studies than men, with statistically significant differences between genders. Additionally, we found that marketing actions have different impacts based on gender: personal guidance in live events or platforms is most influential for women, whereas teachers and social media have a more significant impact on men. The results also indicate two main paths into the field: the traditional linear educational pathway and the adult career change pathway, each significantly varying by gender

Not all research leads to fruitful results; trying new ways or methods may surpass the state of the art, but sometimes the hypothesis is not proven or the improvement is insignificant. In a systems discipline like pervasive computing, there are many sources of errors, from hardware issues over communication channels to heterogeneous software environments. However, failure to succeed is not a failure to progress. It is essential to create platforms for sharing insights, experiences, and lessons learned when conducting research in pervasive computing so that the same mistakes are not repeated. And sometimes, a problem is a symptom of discovering new research challenges. Based on the collective input of the First International Workshop on Negative Results in Pervasive Computing (PerFail 2022), co-located with the 20th International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom 2022), this paper presents a comprehensive discussion on perspectives on publishing negative results and lessons learned in pervasive computing.

Based on the collective input of Dagstuhl Seminar (21342), this paper presents a comprehensive discussion on AI methods and capabilities in the context of edge computing, referred as Edge AI. In a nutshell, we envision Edge AI to provide adaptation for data-driven applications, enhance network and radio access, and allow the creation, optimization, and deployment of distributed AI/ML pipelines with given quality of experience, trust, security and privacy targets. The Edge AI community investigates novel ML methods for the edge computing environment, spanning multiple sub-fields of computer science, engineering and ICT. The goal is to share an envisioned roadmap that can bring together key actors and enablers to further advance the domain of Edge AI.

Mobile applications and online service providers track our virtual and physical behaviour more actively and with a broader scope than ever before. This has given rise to growing concerns about ethical personal data management. Even though regulation and awareness around data ethics are increasing, end-users are seldom engaged when defining and designing what a future with ethical personal data management should look like. We explore a participatory process that uses design futures, the Future workshop method and design fictions to envision ethical personal data management with end-users and designers. To engage participants effectively, we needed to bridge their differential expertise and make the abstract concepts of data and ethics tangible. By concretely presenting personal data management and control as fictitious entities called Data Daemons, we created a shared understanding of these abstract concepts, and empowered non-expert end-users and designers to become actively engaged in the design process.

In this white paper we provide a vision for 6G Edge Intelligence. Moving towards 5G and beyond the future 6G networks, intelligent solutions utilizing data-driven machine learning and artificial intelligence become crucial for several real-world applications including but not limited to, more efficient manufacturing, novel personal smart device environments and experiences, urban computing and autonomous traffic settings. We present edge computing along with other 6G enablers as a key component to establish the future 2030 intelligent Internet technologies as shown in this series of 6G White Papers.
In this white paper, we focus in the domains of edge computing infrastructure and platforms, data and edge network management, software development for edge, and real-time and distributed training of ML/AI algorithms, along with security, privacy, pricing, and end-user aspects. We discuss the key enablers and challenges and identify the key research questions for the development of the Intelligent Edge services. As a main outcome of this white paper, we envision a transition from Internet of Things to Intelligent Internet of Intelligent Things and provide a roadmap for development of 6G Intelligent Edge.

The commercial launch of 6G communications systems and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UN SDGs, are both targeted for 2030. 6G communications is expected to boost global growth and productivity, create new business models and transform many aspects of society. The UN SDGs are a way of framing opportunities and challenges of a desirable future world and cover topics as broad as ending poverty, gender equality, climate change and smart cities. The relationship between these potentially mutually reinforcing forces is currently under-defined. Building on the vision for 6G, a review of megatrends, on-going activities on the relation of mobile communications to the UN SDGs and existing indicators, a novel linkage between 6G and the UN SDGs is proposed via indicators. The white paper has also launched the work of deriving new 6G related indicators to guide the research of 6G systems. The novel linkage is built on the envisaged three-fold role of 6G as a provider of services to help steer and support communities and countries towards reaching the UN SDGs, as an enabler of measuring tool for data collection to help reporting of indicators with hyperlocal granularity, and as a reinforcer of new ecosystems based on 6G technology enablers and 6G network of networks to be developed in line with the UN SDGs that incorporates future mobile communication technologies available in 2030. Related challenges are also identified. An action plan is presented along with prioritized focus areas within the mobile communication sector technology and industry evolution to best support the achievement of the UN SDGs.

Sovereignty of the Apps: There's more to Relevance than Downloads

The value of mobile apps is traditionally measured by metrics such as the number of downloads, installations, or user ratings. A problem with these measures is that they reflect actual usage at most indirectly. Indeed, analytic companies have suggested that retention rates, i.e., the number of days users continue to interact with an installed app are low. We conduct the first independent and large-scale study of retention rates and usage behavior trends in the wild. We study their impact on a large-scale database of app-usage data from a community of 339,842 users and more than 213,667 apps. Our analysis shows that, on average, applications lose 70% of their users in the first week, while very popular applications (top 100) lose only 45%. It also reveals, however, that many applications have more complex usage behavior patterns due to seasonality, marketing, or other factors. To capture such effects, we develop a novel app-usage behavior trend measure which provides instantaneous information about the "hotness" of an application. We identify typical trends in app popularity and classify applications into archetypes. From these, we can distinguish, for instance, trendsetters from copycat apps. In our results, roughly 40% of all apps never gain more than a handful of users. Less than 0.4% of the remaining 60% are constantly popular, 1% flop after an initial steep rise, and 7% continuously rise in popularity. We conclude by demonstrating that usage behavior trend information can be used to develop better mobile app recommendations. With the proposed usage-based measures (retention and trend), we are able to shift sovereignty in app recommendations back to where it really matters: actual usage statistics, in contrast to download count and user ratings which are prone to manipulation by people.
