Each algebraic soliton corresponds to a simple embedded eigenvalue in the Kaup--Newell spectral problem and attains the maximal mass among the family of solitary waves traveling with the same speed. By coalescence of speeds of the two algebraic solitons, we find a new solution for an algebraic double-soliton which corresponds to a double embedded eigenvalue. We prove the existence of a class of time-localized and space-periodic breathers (called q-gap breathers) in nonlinear lattices with time-periodic coefficients. These q-gap breathers are the counterparts to the classical space-localized and time-periodic breathers found in space-periodic systems. Using normal form transformations, we establish rigorously the existence of such solutions with oscillating tails (in the time domain) that can be made arbitrarily small, but finite. Due to the presence of the oscillating tails, these solutions are coined generalized q-gap breathers. Using a multiple-scale analysis, we also derive a tractable amplitude equation that describes the dynamics of breathers in the limit of small amplitude. In the presence of dam**, we demonstrate the existence of transition fronts that connect the trivial state to the time-periodic ones. The analytical results are corroborated by systematic numerical simulations.

We are interested in the dynamics of interfaces, or zeros, of shock waves in general scalar viscous conservation laws with a locally Lipschitz continuous flux function, such as the modular Burgers' equation. We prove that all interfaces coalesce within finite time, leaving behind either a single interface or no interface at all. Our proof relies on mass and energy estimates, regularization of the flux function, and an application of the Sturm theorems on the number of zeros of solutions of parabolic problems. Our analysis yields an explicit upper bound on the time of extinction in terms of the initial condition and the flux function. Moreover, in the case of a smooth flux function, we characterize the generic bifurcations arising at a coalescence event with and without the presence of odd symmetry. We identify associated scaling laws describing the local interface dynamics near collision. Finally, we present an extension of these results to the case of anti-shock waves converging to asymptotic limits of opposite signs. Our analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations in the modular Burgers' equation and its regularizations.

The Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation describes long internal waves of small amplitude in deep fluids. Compared to its counterpart for shallow fluids, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the BO equation admits exact solutions for the traveling periodic and solitary waves as well as their interactions expressed in elementary (trigonometric and polynomial) functions. Motivated by a recent progress for the KdV equation, we discover here two scenarios of the soliton-periodic wave interactions which result in the propagation of either elevation (bright) or depression (dark) breathers (periodic in time coherent structures). The existence of two different breathers is related to the band-gap spectrum of the Lax operator associated with the traveling periodic wave. Given a simple structure of the exact solutions in the BO equation, we obtain a closed-form expression for multi-solitons interacting with the traveling periodic wave.

The Swift-Hohenberg equation (SHE) is a partial differential equation that explains how patterns emerge from a spatially homogeneous state. It has been widely used in the theory of pattern formation. Following a recent study by Bramburger and Holzer [2], we consider discrete SHE on deterministic and random graphs. The two families of the discrete models share the same continuum limit in the form of a nonlocal SHE on a circle. The analysis of the continuous system, parallel to the analysis of the classical SHE, shows bifurcations of spatially periodic solutions at critical values of the control parameters. However, the proximity of the discrete models to the continuum limit does not guarantee that the same bifurcations take place in the discrete setting in general, because some of the symmetries of the continuous model do not survive discretization.
We use the center manifold reduction and normal forms to obtain precise information about the number and stability of solutions bifurcating from the homogeneous state in the discrete models on deterministic and sparse random graphs. Moreover, we present detailed numerical results for the discrete SHE on the nearest-neighbor and small-world graphs.

The solution (which we refer to as to the dark breather) is obtained by using the Darboux transformation with the eigenfunctions of the Lax system expressed in terms of the Jacobi theta functions. Properties of elliptic functions including the quarter-period translations in the complex plane are applied to transform the solution to the simplest form. We explore the characteristic properties of these dark breathers and show that they propagate faster than the periodic wave (in the same direction) and attain maximal localization at a specific parameter value which is explicitly computed.

Pair soliton interactions play a significant role in the dynamics of soliton turbulence. The interaction of solitons with different polarities is particularly crucial in the context of abnormally large wave formation, often referred to as freak or rogue waves, as these interactions result in an increase in the maximum wave field. In this article, we investigate the features and properties of bipolar soliton interactions within the framework of the non-integrable Schamel equation, contrasting them with the integrable modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. We examine variations in moments and extrema of the wave fields. Additionally, we identify scenarios in which, in the bipolar solitary wave interaction, the smaller solitary wave transfers a portion of its energy to the larger one, causing an increase in the amplitude of the larger solitary wave and a decrease in the amplitude of the smaller one, returning them to their pre-interaction state. Notably, we observe that non-integrability can be considered a factor that triggers the formation of rogue waves.

Soliton gas or soliton turbulence is a subject of intense studies due to its great importance to optics, hydrodynamics, electricity, chemistry, biology and plasma physics. Usually, this term is used for integrable models where solitons interact elastically. However, soliton turbulence can also be a part of non-integrable dynamics, where long-lasting solutions in the form of almost solitons may exist. In the present paper, the complex dynamics of ensembles of solitary waves is studied within the Schamel equation using direct numerical simulations. Some important statistical characteristics (distribution functions, moments) are calculated numerically for unipolar and bipolar soliton gases. Comparison of results with integrable Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and modified KdV (mKdV) models are given qualitatively. Our results agree well with the predictions of the KdV equation in the case of unipolar solitons. However, in the bipolar case, we observed a notable departure from the mKdV model, particularly in the behavior of kurtosis. The observed increase in kurtosis signifies the amplification of distribution function tails, which, in turn, corresponds to the presence of high-amplitude waves.

The study of the process of catastrophic tsunami-type waves on the coast makes it possible to determine the destructive force of waves on the coast. In hydrodynamics, the one-dimensional theory of the run-up of non-linear waves on a flat slope has gained great popularity, within which rigorous analytical results have been obtained in the class of non-breaking waves. In general, the result depends on the characteristics of the wave approaching (or generated on) the slope, which is usually not known in the measurements. Here we describe a rigorous method for recovering the initial displacement in a source localised in an inclined power-shaped channel from the characteristics of a moving shoreline. The method uses the generalised Carrier-Greenspan transformation, which allows one-dimensional non-linear shallow-water equations to be reduced to linear ones. The solution is found in terms of Erdélyi-Kober integral operator. Numerical verification of our results is presented for the cases of a parabolic bay and an infinite plane beach.

This study investigates the numerical evolution of an initially internal random wave field characterized by a Gaussian spectrum shape using the Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation. The research focuses on analyzing various properties associated with the BO random wave field, including the transition to a steady state of the spectra, statistical moments, and the distribution functions of wave amplitudes. Numerical simulations are conducted across different Ursell parameters, revealing intriguing findings. Notably, it is observed that the spectra of the wave field converges to a stationary state in a statistical sense, while exhibiting statistical characteristics that deviate from a Gaussian distribution. Moreover, as the Ursell parameter increases, the positive skewness of the wave field intensifies, and the kurtosis increases. The investigation also involves the computation of the probability of rogue wave formation, revealing deviations from the Rayleigh distribution. Notably, the study uncovers distinct types of rogue waves, specifically referred to as "two sisters" and "three sisters" phenomena.

This study aims to explore the complex interactions between an internal solitary wave and an external force using the Benjamin-Ono equation as the theoretical framework. The investigation encompasses both asymptotic and numerical approaches. By assuming a small amplitude for the external force, we derive a dynamical system that describes the behavior of the solitary wave amplitude and the position of its crest. Our findings reveal three distinct scenarios: (i) resonance between the solitary wave and the external force, (ii) oscillatory motion with closed orbits, and (iii) displacement from the initial position while maintaining the wave direction. However, through numerical simulations, we observe a different relationship between the amplitude of the solitary wave and its crest position. Specifically, for external forces of small amplitude, the simulations indicate the presence of an unstable spiral pattern. Conversely, when subjected to external forces of larger amplitudes, the solitary wave exhibits a stable spiral trajectory which resembles the classical damped mass-spring system.

This article presents a numerical investigation of overtaking collisions between two solitary waves in the context of the Schamel equation. Our study reveals different regimes characterized by the behavior of the wave interactions. In certain regimes, the collisions maintain two well-separated crests consistently over time, while in other regimes, the number of local maxima undergoes variations following the patterns of $2\rightarrow 1\rightarrow 2\rightarrow 1\rightarrow 2$ or $2\rightarrow 1\rightarrow 2$. These findings demonstrate that the geometric Lax-categorization observed in the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) for two-soliton collisions remains applicable to the Schamel equation. However, in contrast to the KdV, we demonstrate that an algebraic Lax-categorization based on the ratio of the initial solitary wave amplitudes is not feasible for the Schamel equation. Additionally, we show that the statistical moments for two-solitary wave collisions are qualitatively similar to the KdV equation and the phase shifts after soliton interactions are close to ones in integrable KdV and modified KdV models.

This study aims to investigate the interactions of solitons with an external force within the framework of the Schamel equation, both asymptotically and numerically. By utilizing asymptotic expansions, we demonstrate that the soliton interaction can be approximated by a dynamical system that involves the soliton amplitude and its crest position. To solve the Schamel equation, we employ a pseudospectral method and compare the obtained results with those predicted by the asymptotic theory. Remarkably, our findings reveal a qualitatively agreement between the predictions and the numerical simulations at early times. Specifically, we classify the soliton interaction into three categories: (i) steady interaction occurs when the crest of the soliton and the crest of the external force are in phase, (ii) oscillatory behavior arises when the soliton's speed and the external force speed are close to resonance, causing the soliton to bounce back and forth near its initial position, and (iii) non-reversible motion occurs when the soliton moves away from its initial position without changing its direction.

Effects of nonlinear dynamics of solitary waves and wave modulations within the modular (also known as quadratically cubic) Korteweg - de Vries equation are studied analytically and numerically. Large wave events can occur in the course of interaction between solitons of different signs. Stable and unstable (finite-time-lived) breathers can be generated in inelastic collisions of solitons and from perturbations of two polarities. A nonlinear evolution equation on long modulations of quasi-sinusoidal waves is derived, which is the modular or quadratically cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Its solutions in the form of envelope solitons describe breathers of the modular Korteweg - de Vries equation. The instability conditions are obtained from the linear stability analysis of periodic wave perturbations. Rogue-wave-type solutions emerging due to the modulational instability in the modular Korteweg - de Vries equation are simulated numerically. They exhibit similar wave amplification, but develop faster than in the Benjamin - Feir instability described by the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Such solutions can be approximated by solitons of an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation arising as the envelope equation. We are interested in a rigorous existence proof of such solutions for a nonlinear wave equation with spatially periodic coefficients. Such solutions are quasi-periodic in a reference frame co-moving with the envelope. We use spatial dynamics, invariant manifolds, and near-identity transformations to construct such solutions on large domains in time and space. Although the spectrum of the linearized equations in the spatial dynamics formulation contains infinitely many eigenvalues on the imaginary axis or in the worst case the complete imaginary axis, a small denominator problem is avoided when the solutions are localized on a finite spatial domain with small tails in far fields.

Due to their unsteady, wavepacket-like character, these wave patterns are referred to as breathers. Both elevation (bright) and depression (dark) breather solutions are obtained. The nonlinear dispersion relations demonstrate that the bright (dark) breathers propagate faster (slower) than the background cnoidal wave. Two-soliton solutions are obtained in the limit of degeneration of the cnoidal wave. The aim of this work is to study numerically the interaction of large amplitude solitary waves with an external periodic forcing using the forced extended Korteweg-de Vries equation (feKdV). Regarding these interactions, we find that a solitary wave can bounce back and forth remaining close to its initial position when the forcing and the solitary wave are near resonant or it can move away from its initial position without reversing their direction. Additionally, we verify that the numerical results agree well within the asymptotic approximation for broad the forcings.

Black solitons are identical in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with intensity-dependent dispersion and the cubic defocusing NLS equation. We prove that the intensity-dependent dispersion introduces new properties in the stability analysis of the black soliton. First, the spectral stability problem possesses only isolated eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. Second, the energetic stability argument holds in Sobolev spaces with exponential weights. Third, the black soliton persists with respect to addition of a small decaying potential and remains spectrally stable when it is pinned to the minimum points of the effective potential. The same model exhibits a family of traveling dark solitons for every wave speed and we incorporate properties of these dark solitons for small wave speeds in the analysis of orbital stability of the black soliton.

It was previously shown that the modular Burgers' equation admits a traveling viscous shock with a single interface, which is stable against smooth and exponentially localized perturbations. In contrast, we suggest in the present work with the help of energy estimates and numerical simulations that the evolution of shock waves with multiple interfaces leads to finite-time coalescence of two consecutive interfaces. We formulate a precise scaling law of the finite-time extinction supported by the interface equations and by numerical simulations.

The ground state of the energy super-critical Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential converges in the energy space to the singular solution in the limit of large amplitudes. The ground state can be represented by a solution curve which has either oscillatory or monotone behavior, depending on the dimension of the system and the power of the focusing nonlinearity. We address here the monotone case for the cubic nonlinearity in the spatial dimensions $d \geq 13$. By using the shooting method for the radial Schrödinger operators, we prove that the Morse index of the ground state is finite and is independent of the (large) amplitude. It is equal to the Morse index of the limiting singular solution, which can be computed from numerical approximations. The numerical results suggest that the Morse index of the ground state is one and that it is stable in the time evolution of the cubic Gross--Pitaevskii equation in dimensions $d \geq 13$.

Two families represent (stable) minimizers of the constrained variational problem and one family represents (unstable) saddle points.

Dynamics of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system on a two-dimensional square lattice is considered in the limit of small-amplitude long-scale waves with slow transverse modulations. In the absence of transverse modulations, dynamics of such waves, even at an oblique angle with respect to the square lattice, is known to be described by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. For the three basic directions (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal), we prove that the modulated waves are well described by the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation. The result was expected long ago but proving rigorous bounds on the approximation error turns out to be complicated due to the nonlocal terms of the KP-II equation and the vector structure of the FPU systems on two-dimensional lattices. We have obtained these error bounds by extending the local well-posedness result for the KP-II equation in Sobolev spaces and by controlling the error terms with energy estimates. The bounds are useful in the analysis of transverse stability of solitary and periodic waves in two-dimensional FPU systems due to many results available for the KP-II equation.

We study the existence and variational characterization of steady states in a coupled system of Gross--Pitaevskii equations modeling two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with the magnetic field trap**. The limit with no trap** has been the subject of recent works where domain walls have been constructed and several properties, including their orbital stability have been derived. Here we focus on the full model with the harmonic trap** potential and characterize minimizers according to the value of the coupling parameter $γ$. We first establish a rigorous connection between the two problems in the Thomas-Fermi limit via $Γ$-convergence. Then, we identify the ranges of $γ$ for which either the symmetric states $(γ< 1)$ or the uncoupled states $(γ> 1)$ are minimizers. Domain walls arise as minimizers in a subspace of the energy space with a certain symmetry for some $γ> 1$. We study bifurcation of the domain walls and furthermore give numerical illustrations of our results.

For $b = \frac{5}{2}$, the strip shrinks to the imaginary axis, but an additional pair of real eigenvalues exists due to projections to the peakon and its spatial translation. The spectral instability results agree with the linear instability results in the case of the Camassa-Holm equation for $b = 2$.

Compared to the previous works, we include arbitrary multi-pulse positive states which approach asymptotically to a composition of N solitons, each sitting on a bounded (pendant, loo**, or internal) edge. Not only we prove that such states exist in the limit of large mass, but also we compute the precise Morse index (the number of negative eigenvalues in the corresponding linearized operator). In the case of the edge-localized N-soliton states on the pendant and loo** edges, we prove that the Morse index is exactly N. The technical novelty of this work is achieved by avoiding elliptic functions (and related exponentially small scalings) and closing the existence arguments in terms of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps for relevant parts of the given graph.

We address the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with intensity-dependent dispersion which was recently proposed in the context of nonlinear optical systems. Contrary to the previous findings, we prove that no solitary wave solutions exist if the sign of the intensity-dependent dispersion coincides with the sign of the constant dispersion, whereas a continuous family of such solutions exists in the case of the opposite signs. The family includes two particular solutions, namely cusped and bell-shaped solitons, where the former represents the lowest energy state in the family and the latter is a limit of solitary waves in a regularized system. We further analyze the delicate analytical properties of these solitary waves such as the asymptotic behavior near singularities, the spectral stability, and the convergence of the fixed-point iterations near such solutions. The analytical theory is corroborated by means of numerical approximations.

We establish a relation of the Green's function of this linear operator with the Mittag--Leffler function, which was previously used in the context of Riemann--Liouville's and Caputo's fractional derivatives. By using this relation, we prove that Green's function is strictly positive and single-lobe (monotonically decreasing away from the maximum point) for every $c > 0$ and every $α\in (0,2]$. On the other hand, we argue from numerical approximations that in the case of $α\in (2,4]$, the Green's function is positive and single-lobe for small $c$ and non-positive and non-single lobe for large $c$.

The wave function modulus of the double-periodic solutions is periodic both in space and time coordinates; such solutions generalize the standing waves which have the time-independent and space-periodic wave function modulus. Similar to other waves in the NLS equation, the double-periodic solutions are spectrally unstable and this instability is related to the bands of the Lax spectrum outside the imaginary axis. Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface position. Exponential weights in space are imposed on the initial data of general perturbations in order to gain the asymptotic decay of perturbations in time. We give numerical illustrations of asymptotic stability of the viscous shocks under general perturbations.

Compactons represent localized bell-shaped waves of either polarity which propagate to the same direction as waves of the linear KdV equation. We put forward a solution to the initial boundary value (IBV) problem for the nonlinear shallow water system in inclined channels of arbitrary cross-section by means of the generalized Carrier-Greenspan hodograph transform (Rybkin et al., 2014). Since the Carrier-Greenspan transform, while linearizing the shallow water system, seriously entangles the IBV in the hodograph plane, all previous solutions required some restrictive assumptions on the IBV conditions, e.g., zero initial velocity, smallness of boundary conditions. For arbitrary non-breaking initial conditions in the physical space, we present an explicit formula for equivalent IBV conditions in the hodograph plane, which can readily be treated by conventional methods. Our procedure, which we call the method of data projection, is based on the Taylor formula and allows us to reduce the transformed IBV data given on curves in the hodograph plane to the equivalent data on lines. Our method works equally well for any inclined bathymetry (not only plane beaches) and, moreover, is fully analytical for U-shaped bays. Numerical simulations show that our method is very robust and can be used to give express forecasting of tsunami wave inundation in narrow bays and fjords

The generalized logistic equation is used to interpret the COVID-19 epidemic data in several countries: Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey and South Korea. The model coefficients are calculated: the growth rate and the expected number of infected people, as well as the exponent indexes in the generalized logistic equation. It is shown that the dependence of the number of the infected people on time is well described on average by the logistic curve (within the framework of a simple or generalized logistic equation) with a determination coefficient exceeding 0.8. At the same time, the dependence of the number of the infected people per day on time has a very uneven character and can be described very roughly by the logistic curve. To describe it, it is necessary to take into account the dependence of the model coefficients on time or on the total number of cases. Variations, for example, of the growth rate can reach 60%. The variability spectra of the coefficients have characteristic peaks at periods of several days, which corresponds to the observed serial intervals. The use of the stochastic logistic equation is proposed to estimate the number of probable peaks in the coronavirus incidence.
