By considering two {\it ab initio}-based complementary approaches, we analyze the electronic structure and extract effective spin models of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, a honeycomb material which has been proposed as a candidate for Kitaev physics. Both methods show that the dominant direct hop** makes the bond-dependent Kitaev term negligible averting the material away from the sought-after spin-liquid regime. As a result, we present a simple three-parameter exchange model to describe the interactions of the lowest doublet of the honeycomb cobaltate BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$. Remarkably, it is the third-neighbor interactions, both isotropic and anisotropic, that are responsible for the standout double-zigzag ground state of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, stabilized by quantum fluctuations. A significantly large third-nearest neighbor hop**, observed in {\it ab initio}, supports the importance of the third-neighbor interactions in the stabilization of the unique ground state of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$.

Small single crystals of Rb$_3$Ni$_2$(NO$_3$)$_7$ were obtained by crystallization from anhydrous nitric acid solution of rubidium nitrate and nickel nitrate hexahydrate. The basic elements of the crystal structure of this new compound are isolated spin-1 two-leg ladders of Ni$^{2+}$-ions connected by (NO$_3$)$^-$ groups. The experimental data show the absence of long range magnetic order at T $\geq 2$~K. LDA+U calculations and the detailed analysis of the experimental data, i.e. of the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat in magnetic fields up to 9~T, the magnetization, and of the high-frequency electron spin resonance data, enable quantitative estimates of the relevant parameters of the $S=1$ ladders in Rb$_3$Ni$_2$(NO$_3$)$_7$ . The rung-coupling $J_1 = 10.5$~K, the leg-coupling $J_2=1.6$~K, and the uniaxial anisotropy $|A| = 179$~GHz are obtained. The scenario of spin liquid quantum ground state is further corroborated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the magnetic susceptibility.

A tendency to form benzene-like molecular orbitals has been recently shown to be a common feature of the $4d$ and $5d$ transition metal oxides with a honeycomb lattice. This tendency competes with other interactions such as the spin-orbit coupling and Hubbard correlations, and can be partially or completely suppressed. In the calculations, SrRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$ presents the cleanest, so far, case of well-formed molecular orbitals, however, direct experimental evidence for or against this proposition has been missing. In this paper, we show that combined photoemission and optical studies can be used to identify molecular orbitals in SrRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Symmetry-driven election selection rules suppress optical transitions between certain molecular orbitals, while photoemission and inverse photoemission measurements are insensitive to them. Comparing the photoemission and optical conductivity spectra one should be able to observe clear signatures of molecular orbitals.

Both theory and experiment show that it is energetically more favorable for implanted zinc ions to occupy the interstitial positions instead of cation substitution. As a result, the Zn-ions embedded to interstitials, form chemical bonds with the surrounding oxygen atoms, formation ZnO-like nanoparticles and oxygen-deficient SiOx matrix. The subsequent thermal annealing at 900 0C (1 hr) strongly reduces the amount of ZnO nanoparticles and induces the formation of α-Zn2SiO4 phase which markedly enhances the green emission.

The effect of orbital degrees of freedom on the exchange interactions in the spin-1 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet CaV2O4 is systematically studied. For this purpose a realistic low-energy model with the parameters derived from the first-principles calculations is constructed. The exchange interactions are calculated using both the theory of infinitesimal spin rotations near the mean-field ground state and the superexchange model, which provide a consistent description. The obtained behaviour of exchange interactions substantially differs from the previously proposed phenomenological picture based on the magnetic measurements and structural considerations, namely: (i) Despite quasi-one-dimensional character of the crystal structure, consisting of the zigzag chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra, the electronic structure is essentially three-dimensional, that leads to finite interactions between the chains; (ii) The exchange interactions along the legs of the chains appear to dominate; and (iii) There is a substantial difference of exchange interactions in two crystallographically inequivalent chains. The combination of these three factors successfully reproduces the behaviour of experimental magnetic susceptibility.

Using ab initio band structure and model calculations we studied magnetic properties of one of the Mn$_4$ molecular magnets (Mn4(hmp)6), where two types of the Mn ions exist: Mn3+ and Mn2+. The direct calculation of the exchange constants in the GGA+U approximation shows that in contrast to a common belief the strongest exchange coupling is not between two Mn3+ ions (J_{bb}), but along two out of four exchange paths connecting Mn3+ and Mn2+ ions (J_{wb}). The microscopic analysis performed within the perturbation theory allowed to establish the mechanism for this largest ferromagnetic exchange constant. The charge ordering of the Mn ions results in the situation when the energy of the excited state in the exchange process is defined not by the large on-site Coulomb repulsion U, but by much smaller energy V, which stabilizes the charge ordered state. Together with strong Hund's rule coupling and specific orbital order this leads to a large ferromagnetic exchange interaction for two out of four Mn2+ --Mn3+ pairs.

We obtained the superexchange interaction J(P=0)~0.15eV is enhanced by ~20% under the 3% - hydrostatic compression and vice versa the J(P) is decreased slightly by ~5,7% under the 3% - uniaxial compression. In both cases the J(P) correlates with the in-plane hop** parameters and dd-excitation energy δ_s=e(^3B_{1})-e(A_{1})$ involving the the two-hole states: Zhang-Rice singlet and ^3{B_{1}} triplet states. The spectral density of the first removal states is a combined singlet-triplet character and a sign of changes in the one with the pressure clearly reproduces the \vec{k}-distribution of quasiparticle states with a different a_1- and b_1-symmetry over the Brillouin zone as a whole.

We present the \emph{ab initio} calculation of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal structure with the Fe$^{3+}$ ions forming the Cairo pentagonal lattice implying strong geometric frustration. The neutron diffraction measurements reveal nearly orthogonal magnetic configuration, which at first sight is rather unexpected since it does not minimize the total energy of the pair of magnetic ions coupled by the Heisenberg exchange interaction. Here we calculate the electronic structure and exchange integrals of Bi2Fe4O9 within the LSDA+U method. We obtain three different in-plane (J3=36 K, J4=73 K, J5=23 K) and two interplane (J1=10 K, J2=12 K) exchange parameters. The derived set of exchange integrals shows that the realistic description of Bi2Fe4O9 needs a more complicated model than the ideal Cairo pentagonal lattice with only two exchange parameters in the plane. However, if one takes into account only two largest exchange integrals, then according to the ratio x\equiv J3/J4=0.49<\sqrt{2} (a critical parameter for the ideal Cairo pentagonal lattice, see. Ref.~1) the ground state should be the orthogonal magnetic configuration in agreement with experiment. The microscopic origin of different exchange interactions is also discussed.

By combining first-principles electronic-structure calculations with the model Hamiltonian approach, we systematically study the magnetic properties of sodium superoxide (NaO2), originating from interacting superoxide molecules. We show that NaO2 exhibits a rich variety of magnetic properties, which are controlled by relative alignment of the superoxide molecules as well as the state of partially filled antibonding molecular π_g-orbitals. The orbital degeneracy and disorder in the high-temperature pyrite phase gives rise to weak isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between the molecules. The transition to the low-temperature marcasite phase lifts the degeneracy, leading to the orbital order and formation of the quasi-one-dimensional AFM spin chains. Both tendencies are consistent with the behavior of experimental magnetic susceptibility data. Furthermore, we evaluate the magnetic transition temperature and type of the long-range magnetic order in the marcasite phase. We argue that this magnetic order depends on the behavior of weak isotropic as well as anisotropic and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interactions between the molecules. Finally, we predict the existence of a multiferroic phase, where the inversion symmetry is broken by the long-range magnetic order, giving rise to substantial ferroelectric polarization.

High-$T_c$ superconductors with CuO$_2$ layers, manganites La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$, and cobaltites LaCoO$_3$ present several mysteries in their physical properties. Most of them are believed to come from the strongly-correlated nature of these materials. From the theoretical viewpoint, there are many hidden rocks in making the consistent description of the band structure and low-energy physics starting from the Fermi-liquid approach. Here we discuss the alternative method -- multielectron approach to the electronic structure calculations for the Mott insulators -- called LDA+GTB (local density approximation + generalized tight-binding) method. Its origin is a straightforward generalization of the Hubbard perturbation theory in the atomic limit and the multiband $p-d$ Hamiltonian with the parameters calculated within LDA. We briefly discuss the method and focus on its applications to cuprates, manganites, and cobaltites.

Using realistic low-energy model with parameters derived from the first-principles electronic structure calculation, we address the origin of the quasi-one-dimensional behavior in orthorhombic NaV$_2$O$_4$, consisting of the double chains of edge-sharing VO$_6$ octahedra. We argue that the geometrical aspect alone does not explain the experimentally observed anisotropy of electronic and magnetic properties of NaV$_2$O$_4$. Instead, we attribute the unique behavior of NaV$_2$O$_4$ to one particular type of the orbital ordering, which respects the orthorhombic $Pnma$ symmetry. This orbital ordering acts to divide all $t_{2g}$ states into two types: the `localized' ones, which are antisymmetric with respect to the mirror reflection $y \rightarrow -$$y$, and the symmetric `delocalized' ones. Thus, NaV$_2$O$_4$ can be classified as the double exchange system. The directional orientation of symmetric orbitals, which form the metallic band, appears to be sufficient to explain both quasi-one-dimensional character of interatomic magnetic interactions and the anisotropy of electrical resistivity.

Our analysis is supported by numerical calculations of electronic polarization using Berry's phase formalism, which was applied to the low-energy model of BiMnO3 derived from the first-principles calculations. We explicitly show how the electric polarization can be controlled by the magnetic field and argue that BiMnO3 is a rare and potentially interesting material where ferroelectricity can indeed coexist and interplay with the ferromagnetism.

We have performed a systematic study of the electronic structures of BiMeO3 (Me = Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) series by soft X-ray emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectroscopy. The band gap values were estimated for all compounds in the series. For BiFeO3 a band gap of ~0.9 eV was obtained from the alignment of the O Ka XES and O 1s XAS. The O 1s XAS spectrum of BiNiO3 indicates that the formation of holes is due to a Ni2+ valency rather than a Ni3+ valency. We have found that the O Ka XES and O 1s XAS of BiMeO3 probing partially occupied and vacant O 2p states, respectively, are in agreement with the O 2p densities of states obtained from spin-polarized band structure calculations. The O Ka XES spectra show the same degree of Bi 6s--O 2p hybridization for all compounds in the series. We argue herein that the stereochemical activity of Bi 6s lone pairs must be supplemented with inversion symmetry breaking to allow electric polarization. For BiMnO3 and BiFeO3, two cases of multiferroic materials in this series, the former breaks the inversion symmetry due to the antiferromagnetic order induced by particular orbital ordering in the highly distorted perovskite structure and the latter has rhombohedral crystal structure without inversion symmetry.

An "external" k-dependent self-energy Σ_k was used to describe interaction of correlated conducting electrons with short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) pseudogap fluctuations. Both experimental and theoretical spectral functions and Fermi surfaces (FS) were obtained and compared demonstrating good semiquantitative agreement. For both experiment and theory normal state spectra of nearly optimally doped PCCO show clear evidence for a pseudogap state with AFM-like nature. Namely, folding of quasiparticle bands as well as presence of the "hot spots" and "Fermi arcs" were observed.

The $C2/c$ symmetry can be restored by the magnetic field $B \sim 35$ Tesla, which switches off the ferroelectric polarization. Our analysis is based on the solution of the low-energy model constructed for the 3d-bands of BiMnO$_3$, where all the parameters have been derived from the first-principles calculations. Using LDA+GTB (local density approximation+generalized tight-binding) hybrid scheme we investigate the band structure of the electron-doped high-$T_c$ material Sm$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$. Parameters of the minimal tight-binding model for this system (the so-called 3-band Emery model) were obtained within the NMTO ($N$-th order Muffin-Tin orbital) method. Do** evolution of the dispersion and Fermi surface in the presence of electronic correlations was investigated in two regimes of magnetic order: short-range (spin-liquid) and long-range (antiferromagnetic metal). Each regime is characterized by the specific topologies of the Fermi surfaces and we discuss their relation to recent experimental data.

This work is provoked by recent discovery of new class prototype systems AFFeAs (A=Sr,Ca) of novel layered ironpnictide High-Tc superconductors (Tc=36K). Here we report ab initio LDA results for electronic structure of the AFFeAs systems. We provide detailed comparison between electronic properties of both new systems and reference LaOFeAs (La111) compound. In the vicinity of the Fermi level all three systems have essentially the same band dispersions. However for iron fluoride systems F(2p) states were found to be separated in energy from As(4p) ones in contrast to La111, where O(2p) states strongly overlaps with As(4p). Thus it should be more plausible to include only Fe(3d) and As(4p) orbitals into a realistic noninteracting model than for La111. Moreover Sr substitution with smaller ionic radius Ca in AFFeAs materials leads to a lattice contruction and stronger Fe(3d)-As(4p) hybridization resulting in smaller value of the density of states at the Fermi level in the case of Ca compound. So to some extend Ca system reminds RE111 with later Rare Earths. However Fermi surface of new fluorides is found to be nearly perfect two-dimensional. Also we do not expect strong dependence of superconducting properties with respect to different types of A substitutes.

We have performed ab initio LDA calculations of electronic structure of newly discovered prototype high-temperature superconductors AFe_2As_2 (A=Ba,Sr) and compared it with previously calculated electronic spectra of ReOFeAs (Re=La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm). In all cases we obtain almost identical densities of states in rather wide energy interval (up to 1 eV) around the Fermi level. Energy dispersions are also very similar and almost two-dimensional in this energy interval, leading to the same basic (minimal) model of electronic spectra, determined mainly by Fe d-orbitals of FeAs layers. The other constituents, such as A ions or rare earths Re (or oxygen states) are more or less irrelevant for superconductivity. LDA Fermi surfaces for AFe_2As_2 are also very similar to that of ReOFeAs. This makes the more simple AFe_2As_2 a generic system to study high-temperature superconductivity in FeAs - layered compounds.

This work is devoted to the analysis of orbital patterns and related to them interatomic magnetic interactions in centrosymmetric monoclinic structures of BiMnO$_3$, which have been recently determined experimentally. First, we set up an effective lattice fermion model for the manganese 3d bands and derive parameters of this model entirely from first-principles electronic structure calculations. Then, we solve this model in terms of the mean-field Hartree-Fock method and derive parameters of interatomic magnetic interactions between Mn ions. We argue that although nearest-neighbor interactions favors the ferromagnetism, they compete with longer-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, the existence of which is directly related with the peculiar geometry of the orbital ordering pattern realized in BiMnO$_3$ below 474 K. These AFM interactions favor an AFM phase, which breaks the inversion symmetry. The formation of the AFM phase is assisted by the orbital degrees of freedom, which tend to adjust the nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the direction, which further stabilizes this phase. We propose that the multiferroelectric behavior, observed in BiMnO$_3$, may be related with the emergence of the AFM phase under certain conditions.

Material specific electronic band structure of the electron-doped high-Tc cuprate Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) (NCCO) is calculated within the pseudo gap regime, using the recently developed generalized LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k scheme. LDA/DFT (density functional theory within local density approximation) provides model parameters (hop** integral values, local Coulomb interaction strength) for the one-band Hubbard model, which is solved by DMFT (dynamical mean-field theory). To take into account pseudogap fluctuations LDA+DMFT is supplied with "external" k-dependent self-energy Sigma_k, which describes interaction of correlated conducting electrons with non-local Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations responsible for pseudo gap formation. Within this LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k approach we demonstrate the formation of pronounced "hot-spots" on the Fermi surface (FS) map in NCCO, opposite to our recent calculations for Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8-d) (Bi2212), which have produced rather extended region of FS "destruction". There are several physical reasons for this fact: (i) the "hot-spots" in NCCO are located closer to Brillouin zone center; (ii) correlation length of AFM fluctuations ξis larger for NCCO; (iii) pseudogap potential Δis stronger, than in Bi2212. Comparison of our theoretical data with recent bulk sensitive high-energy angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data for NCCO provides good semiquantitative agreement. Based on that comparison alternative explanation of the van-Hove singularity at -0.3 eV is proposed. Optical conductivity both for Bi2212 and NCCO is also calculated within LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k and compared with experimental results, demonstrating satisfactory agreement.

In all cases we obtain almost identical electronic spectrum (both energy dispersions and the densities of states) in rather wide energy interval (about 2 eV) around the Fermi level. We also debate that this fact is unlikely to be changed by the account of strong correlations. It leads inevitably to the same critical temperature Tc of superconducting transition in any theoretical BCS-like mechanism of Cooper pair formation. We argue that the experimentally observed variations of Tc for different rare-earth substitutions are either due to disorder effects or less probably because of possible changes in spin-fluctuation spectrum of FeAs layers caused by magnetic interactions with rare-earth spins in ReO layers.

The problem of construction of the Wannier functions (WFs) in a restricted Hilbert space of eigenstates of the one-electron Hamiltonian $\hat{H}$ (forming the so-called low-energy part of the spectrum) can be formulated in several different ways. One possibility is to use the projector-operator techniques, which pick up a set of trial atomic orbitals and project them onto the given Hilbert space. Another possibility is to employ the downfolding method, which eliminates the high-energy part of the spectrum and incorporates all related to it properties into the energy-dependence of an effective Hamiltonian. We show that by modifying the high-energy part of the spectrum of the original Hamiltonian $\hat{H}$, which is rather irrelevant to the construction of WFs in the low-energy part of the spectrum, these two methods can be formulated in an absolutely exact and identical form, so that the main difference between them is reduced to the choice of the trial orbitals. Concerning the latter part of the problem, we argue that an optimal choice for trial orbitals can be based on the maximization of the site-diagonal part of the density matrix. The main idea is illustrated for a simple toy model, consisting of only two bands, as well as for a more realistic example of $t_{2g}$ bands in V$_2$O$_3$. An analogy with the search of the ground state of a many-electron system is also discussed.

To describe pseudogap regime in Bi2212 we employ novel generalized ab initio LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k hybrid scheme. This scheme is based on the strategy of one of the most powerfull computational tool for real correlated materials LDA+DMFT. Here the LDA+DMFT equations are supplied by an additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sigma_k in the spirit of our recently proposed DMFT+Sigma_k approach, accounting for pseudogap fluctuations. In the present model Sigma_k describes non-local correlations induced by short-ranged collective Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The effective single impurity problem of the DMFT is solved by NRG. Material specific model parameters for effective x2-y2 orbital of Cu-3d shell of Bi2212 compound, e.g. hop** integrals, local Coulomb interaction U and pseudogap potential Delta were obtained within LDA and LDA+DMFT. We report theoretical LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k quasiparticle bands dispersion and dam**, Fermi surface renormalization, momentum anisotropy of (quasi) static scattering, densities of states, spectral densities and angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra accounting for pseudogap and bilayer splitting effects for normal (slightly) underdoped Bi2212 (delta=0.15). We show that LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k successfully describes strong (pseudogap) scattering close to Brillouin zone boundaries. Our calculated LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k Fermi surfaces and ARPES spectra in presence of the pseudogap fluctuations are almost insensitive to the bilayer splitting strength. The LDA-calculated value of bilayer splitting is found to be rather small to describe experimentally observed peak-dip-hump structure.

Two typical manifestations of strong Coulomb correlations are revealed: (i) the calculated quasiparticle mass enhancement of $m^*/m \approx2.5$ agrees with various experimental results, and (ii) the satellite structure at about 3 eV binding energy observed in photoemission experiments is shown to be the lower Hubbard band. For these reasons Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is identified as a strongly correlated 4$d$ electron material.

In the framework of the LDA+U approximation we propose the direct way of calculation of crystal-field excitation energy and apply it to La and Y titanates. The method developed can be useful for comparison with the results of spectroscopic measurements because it takes into account fast relaxations of electronic system. For titanates these relaxation processes reduce the value of crystal-field splitting by $\sim30%$ as compared with the difference of LDA one electron energies. However, the crystal-field excitation energy in these systems is still large enough to make an orbital liquid formation rather unlikely and experimentally observed isotropic magnetism remains unexplained.

We propose a computational scheme for the ab initio calculation of Wannier functions (WFs) for correlated electronic materials. The full-orbital Hamiltonian H is projected into the WF subspace defined by the physically most relevant partially filled bands. The Hamiltonian H^{WF} obtained in this way, with interaction parameters calculated by constrained LDA for the Wannier orbitals, is used as an ab initio setup of the correlation problem, which can then be solved by many-body techniques, e.g., dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In such calculations the self-energy operator Σ(e) is defined in WF basis which then can be converted back into the full-orbital Hilbert space to compute the full-orbital interacting Green function G(r,r',e). Using G(r,r',e) one can evaluate the charge density, modified by correlations, together with a new set of WFs, thus defining a fully self-consistent scheme. The Green function can also be used for the calculation of spectral, magnetic and electronic properties of the system. Here we report the results obtained with this method for SrVO3 and V2O3. Comparisons are made with previous results obtained by the LDA+DMFT approach where the LDA DOS was used as input, and with new bulk-sensitive experimental spectra.

LiV_2 O_4 is one of the most puzzling compounds among transition metal oxides because of its heavy fermion like behavior at low temperatures. In this paper we present results for the orbital state and magnetic properties of LiV_2 O_4 obtained from a combination of density functional theory within the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The DMFT equations are solved by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The trigonal crystal field splits the V 3d orbitals such that the a_{1g} and e_{g}^{pi} orbitals cross the Fermi level, with the former being slightly lower in energy and narrower in bandwidth. In this situation, the d-d Coulomb interaction leads to an almost localization of one electron per V ion in the a_{1g} orbital, while the e_{g}^{pi} orbitals form relatively broad bands with 1/8 filling. 2The theoretical high-temperature paramagnetic susceptibility chi(T) follows a Curie-Weiss law with an effective paramagnetic moment p_{eff}=1.65 in agreement with the experimental results.
