We show that the type-II multiferroic properties of bulk MnWO4 are kept in nanostructured ceramics of 50 nm grain size prepared via spark plasma sintering (SPS). This means that ferroelectric polarization is robust against downsizing, which is at variance with standard ferroelectrics like BaTiO3. We ascribe this stability to the spin-driven nature of the ferroe-lectric correlations in type-II multiferroics while it is resulting from lattice distortion in other cases. This may open the way for persistent type-II multiferroicity with no need for external stabilization like substrate-generated strain.

Our data rules out most theoretical scenarios that have previously been proposed for this phase, and we find that it is well described by an exotic quantum spin liquid with three flavors of unpaired fermionic spinons, forming a large spinon Fermi surface.

The interest in finding experimental realization of Quantum Liquid Spin phases leads us to elaborate polycrystalline samples of the 6H-B phase of Ba3NiSb2O9 . This structure shows Ni triangular planes and the first magnetic characterizations confirm the absence of any magnetic order as expected for QLS. The samples were synthesized by treatment under HP-HT of the 6H-A phase of Ba3NiSb2O9. The optimized synthesis conditions were 2.5 GPa and 620°C. By combining several technics as XRD, NPD and TEM we show that even the obtained compound is in fact a new form of Ba3NiSb2O9, that corresponds to a new stacking along c. This preserves the presence of Ni planes but results in a loss of the hexagonal symmetry. The TEM is helpful to conclude to a trigonal symmetry at a scale of 10nm.

The effects of substituting nonmagnetic Mg2+ and Zn2+ ions for the Mn2+ (S = 5/2) ions on the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic frustrated antiferromagnet MnWO4 were investigated. Polycrystalline samples of Mn1-xMgxWO4 and Mn1-xZnxWO4 (0<x<0.3) solid solutions were prepared by a solid-state route and characterized via X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization, and dielectric permittivity measurements. Mg and Zn substitutions give rise to very similar effects. The Neel temperature TN, the AF3-to-AF2 magnetic phase transition temperature T2, and the critical ferroelectric temperature Tc = T2 of MnWO4 are reduced upon the nonmagnetic do**. At the lowest temperature (T = 1.5 K), the incommensurate magnetic structure for x(Mg) = 0.15 and x(Zn) = 0.15 corresponds to either a sinusoidal spin arrangement or an elliptical spin-spiral phase similar to the polar AF2 structure observed in MnWO4. These findings were discussed by considering the effects of the Mg and Zn substitutions on the crystal lattice and on the spin exchange network of MnWO4.

Y0.5Ca0.5BaCo4O7 was recently introduced as a possible candidate for capturing some of the predicted classical spin kagome ground state features. Stimulated by this conjecture we have taken up a more complete study of the spin correlations in this compound with neutron scattering methods on a powder sample characterized with high-resolution neutron diffraction and the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. We have found that the frustrated near neighbor magnetic correlations involve not only the kagome planes but concern the full Co sub-lattice as evidenced by the analysis of the wavevector-dependence of the short range order. We conclude from our results that the magnetic moments are located on the Co sub-lattice as a whole and that correlations extend beyond the two-dimensional kagome planes. We identify intriguing dynamical properties, observing high-frequency fluctuations with a lorentzian line-width Γ <= 20 meV at ambient temperature. On cooling a low-frequency (~ 1 meV) dynamical component develops alongside the high-frequency fluctuations, which eventually becomes static at temperatures below T ~ 50 K. The high-frequency response with an overall line-width of ~ 10 meV prevails at T <= 2 K coincident with a fully elastic short-range ordered contribution.

The ordered magnetic states of MnWO4 at low temperatures were examined by evaluating the spin exchange interactions between the Mn2+ ions of MnWO4 on the basis of first principles density functional calculations and by performing classical spin analysis with the resulting spin exchange parameters. Our work shows that the spin exchange interactions are frustrated within each zigzag chain of Mn2+ ions along the c-direction and between such chains of Mn2+ ions along the a-direction. This explains the occurrence of a spiral-spin order along the c- and a-directions in the incommensurate magnetic state AF2, and that of a uudd spin order along the c- and a-directions in the commensurate magnetic state AF1. The ferroelectric polarization of MnWO4 in the spiral-spin state AF2 was examined by performing Berry phase calculations for a model superstructure to find that the ferroelectric polarization occurs along the b-direction, in agreement with experiment.

The motivation of the study is the recently discovered, phonon-driven, magnetic relaxation in the SCGO compound [Mutka et al. PRL {\bf 97} 047203 (2006)] pointing out the importance of a low-energy ($\hbarω\sim$7 meV) phonon mode. In neutron scattering experiments on these compounds the phonon signal is partly masked by the magnetic signal from the Cr moments and we have therefore examined in detail the non-magnetic isostructural counterparts SrGa$_{12}$O$_{19}$ (SGO) and Ba$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$ZnGa$_{10}$O$_{22}$ (BSZGO). Our {\it ab-initio} lattice dynamics calculations on SGO reveal a peak in the vibrational density of states matching with the neutron observations on SGO and SCGO. A strong contribution in the vibrational density of states comes from the partial contribution of the Ga atoms on the 2b and 12k sites, involving modes at the M--point of the hexagonal system. These modes comprise dynamics of the kagomé planes of the pyrochlore slab magnetic sub-lattice, 12k sites, and therefore can drive magnetic relaxation via spin-phonon coupling. Both BSZCGO and BSZGO show a similar low-energy Raman peak but no corresponding peak in the neutron determined density of states of BSZGO is seen. However, a strong non-Debye enhancement of low-energy phonon response is observed. We attribute this particular feature to the Zn/Ga disorder on the 2$d$ -site, already evoked earlier to affect the magnetic properties of BSZCGO. We propose that this disorder-induced phonon response explains the absence of a characteristic energy scale and the much faster magnetic relaxation observed in BSZCGO.

Raman scattering experiments on CdCr2S4 single crystals show pronounced anomalies in intensity and frequency of optical phonon modes with an onset temperature T*=130 K that coincides with the regime of giant magnetocapacitive effects. A loss of inversion symmetry and Cr off-centering are deduced from the observation of longitudinal optical and formerly infrared active modes for T<T_c=84 K. The intensity anomalies are attributed to the enhanced electronic polarizability of displacements that modulate the Cr-S distance and respective hybridization. Photo do** leads to an annihilation of the symmetry reduction. Our scenario of multiferroic effects is based on the near degeneracy of polar and nonpolar modes and the additional low energy scale due to hybridization.

Charge transport in the hole-doped quasi-1D model system Y$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$BaNiO$_5$ (x $ leq$ 0.15) is investigated in the 50-300 K temperature range. The resistivity temperature dependence is characterized by a constant activation energy $E_{a}/k_{B} sim$ 1830 K at room temperature while $E_{a}$ decreases upon cooling. We suggest that $E_{a}$ measures the binding energy of the doped holes which form magneto-acoustic polarons when polarizing the neighboring Ni spins. A semi-classical model is proposed which allows to relate the electrical measurements and the bulk magnetic susceptibility. This model gives a picture of the spin-charge-lattice relation in this inhomogeneously doped quasi-1D system and explains its unusual one-particle charge excitation spectrum close to the Fermi level.

By using the photon energy dependence of the photoemission cross section, we identified the symmetry of the first ionisation states (d type). Hole do** in this system leads to a significant increase in the spectral weight at the top of the valence band without any change in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. This behavior, not observed in other charge transfer oxides at low do** level, could result from the inhomogeneous character of the doped system and from a Ni 3d-O 2p hybridization enhancement due to the shortening of the relevant Ni-O distance in the localized hole-doped regions.

We make a new proposal to describe the very low temperature susceptibility of the doped Haldane gap compound Y$_2$BaNi$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$O$_5$. We propose a new mean field model relevant for this compound. The ground state of this mean field model is unconventional because antiferromagnetism coexists with random dimers. We present new susceptibility experiments at very low temperature. We obtain a Curie-Weiss susceptibility $χ(T) \sim C / (Θ+T)$ as expected for antiferromagnetic correlations but we do not obtain a direct signature of antiferromagnetic long range order. We explain how to obtain the ``impurity'' susceptibility $χ_{imp}(T)$ by subtracting the Haldane gap contribution to the total susceptibility. In the temperature range [1 K, 300 K] the experimental data are well fitted by $T χ_{imp}(T) = C_{imp} (1 + T_{imp}/T )^{-γ}$. In the temperature range [100 mK, 1 K] the experimental data are well fitted by $T χ_{imp}(T) = A \ln{(T/T_c)}$, where $T_c$ increases with $x$. This fit suggests the existence of a finite Néel temperature which is however too small to be probed directly in our experiments. We also obtain a maximum in the temperature dependence of the ac-susceptibility $χ'(T)$ which suggests the existence of antiferromagnetic correlations at very low temperature.
