Context: Due to advances in synthesizing lower dimensional materials there is the challenge of finding the wave equation that effectively describes quantum particles moving on 1D and 2D domains. Jensen and Koppe and Da Costa independently introduced a confining potential formalism showing that the effective constrained dynamics is subjected to a scalar geometry-induced potential; for the confinement to a curve, the potential depends on the curve's curvature function.
Method: To characterize the $π$ electrons in polyenes, we follow two approaches. First, we utilize a weakened Coulomb potential associated with a spiral curve. The solution to the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions yields Bessel functions, and the spectrum is obtained analytically. We employ the particle-in-a-box model in the second approach, incorporating effective mass corrections. The $π$-$π^*$ transitions of polyenes were calculated in good experimental agreement with both approaches, although with different wave functions.

In this work, we establish local well-posedness for the Korteweg-de Vries model on a balanced star graph with a structure represented by semi-infinite edges, by considering a boundary condition of $δ$-type at the {unique} graph-vertex. Also, we extend the linear instability result of Angulo and Cavalcante (2021) to one of nonlinear instability. For the proof of local well posedness theory the principal new ingredient is the utilization of the special solutions by Faminskii in the context of half-lines. As far as we are aware, this approach is being used for the first time in the context of star graphs and can potentially be applied to other boundary classes. In the case of the nonlinear instability result, the principal ingredients are the linearized instability known result and the fact that data-to-solution map determined by the local theory is at least of class $C^2$.

The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for a large class of nonlinear evolution equations known as scalar viscous balance laws, the spectral (linear) instability condition of periodic traveling wave solutions implies their orbital (nonlinear) instability in appropriate periodic Sobolev spaces. The analysis is based on the well-posedness theory, the smoothness of the data-solution map, and an abstract result of instability of equilibria under nonlinear iterations. The resulting instability criterion is applied to two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude waves with finite fundamental period which emerge from a local Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the velocity. The second family comprises arbitrarily large period waves which arise from a homoclinic (global) bifurcation and tend to a limiting traveling pulse when their fundamental period tends to infinity. In the case of both families, the criterion is applied to conclude their orbital instability under the flow of the nonlinear viscous balance law in periodic Sobolev spaces with same period as the fundamental period of the wave.

Current rapid changes in climate increase the urgency to change energy production and consumption management, to reduce carbon and other green-house gas production. In this context, the French electricity network management company RTE (R{é}seau de Transport d'{É}lectricit{é}) has recently published the results of an extensive study outlining various scenarios for tomorrow's French power management. We propose a challenge that will test the viability of such a scenario. The goal is to control electricity transportation in power networks, while pursuing multiple objectives: balancing production and consumption, minimizing energetic losses, and kee** people and equipment safe and particularly avoiding catastrophic failures. While the importance of the application provides a goal in itself, this challenge also aims to push the state-of-the-art in a branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) called Reinforcement Learning (RL), which offers new possibilities to tackle control problems. In particular, various aspects of the combination of Deep Learning and RL called Deep Reinforcement Learning remain to be harnessed in this application domain. This challenge belongs to a series started in 2019 under the name "Learning to run a power network" (L2RPN). In this new edition, we introduce new more realistic scenarios proposed by RTE to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, retiring fossil fuel electricity production, increasing proportions of renewable and nuclear energy and introducing batteries. Furthermore, we provide a baseline using state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithm to stimulate the future participants.

This paper reports the results and post-challenge analyses of ChaLearn's AutoDL challenge series, which helped sorting out a profusion of AutoML solutions for Deep Learning (DL) that had been introduced in a variety of settings, but lacked fair comparisons. All input data modalities (time series, images, videos, text, tabular) were formatted as tensors and all tasks were multi-label classification problems. Code submissions were executed on hidden tasks, with limited time and computational resources, pushing solutions that get results quickly. In this setting, DL methods dominated, though popular Neural Architecture Search (NAS) was impractical. Solutions relied on fine-tuned pre-trained networks, with architectures matching data modality. Post-challenge tests did not reveal improvements beyond the imposed time limit. While no component is particularly original or novel, a high level modular organization emerged featuring a "meta-learner", "data ingestor", "model selector", "model/learner", and "evaluator". This modularity enabled ablation studies, which revealed the importance of (off-platform) meta-learning, ensembling, and efficient data management. Experiments on heterogeneous module combinations further confirm the (local) optimality of the winning solutions. Our challenge legacy includes an ever-lasting benchmark (http://autodl.chalearn.org), the open-sourced code of the winners, and a free "AutoDL self-service".

The aim of this work is to establish a instability study for stationary kink and antikink/kink profiles solutions for the sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a Y-junction so-called a Josephson tricrystal junction. By considering boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, it is shown that these kink-soliton type stationary profiles are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stability analysis. The local well-posedness of the sine-Gordon model in $H^1(Y)\times L^2(Y)$ is also established. The theory developed in this investigation has prospects for the study of the (in)-stability of stationary wave solutions of other configurations for kink-solitons profiles.

The sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction, is considered. The model is endowed with boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, expressing continuity of the derivatives of the wave functions plus a Kirchhoff-type rule for the self-induced magnetic flux. It is shown that particular stationary, kink and kink/anti-kink soliton profile solutions to the model are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. To that end, a recently developed linear instability criterion for evolution models on metric graphs by Angulo and Cavalcante (2020), which provides the sufficient conditions on the linearized operator around the wave to have a pair of real positive/negative eigenvalues, is applied. This leads to the spectral study to the linearize operator and of its Morse index. The analysis is based on analytic perturbation theory, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and the extension theory of symmetric operators. The methods presented in this manuscript have prospect for the study of the dynamic of solutions for the sine-Gordon model on metric graphs with finite bounds or on metric tree graphs and/or loop graphs.

Synthetic medical data which preserves privacy while maintaining utility can be used as an alternative to real medical data, which has privacy costs and resource constraints associated with it. At present, most models focus on generating cross-sectional health data which is not necessarily representative of real data. In reality, medical data is longitudinal in nature, with a single patient having multiple health events, non-uniformly distributed throughout their lifetime. These events are influenced by patient covariates such as comorbidities, age group, gender etc. as well as external temporal effects (e.g. flu season). While there exist seminal methods to model time series data, it becomes increasingly challenging to extend these methods to medical event time series data. Due to the complexity of the real data, in which each patient visit is an event, we transform the data by using summary statistics to characterize the events for a fixed set of time intervals, to facilitate analysis and interpretability. We then train a generative adversarial network to generate synthetic data. We demonstrate this approach by generating human sleep patterns, from a publicly available dataset. We empirically evaluate the generated data and show close univariate resemblance between synthetic and real data. However, we also demonstrate how stratification by covariates is required to gain a deeper understanding of synthetic data quality.

This paper sheds new light on the stability properties of solitary wave solutions associated with models of Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin\&Bona\&Mahoney type, when the dispersion is very lower. Via an approach of compactness, analyticity and asymptotic perturbation theory, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of exponentially growing solutions to the linearized problem and so a criterium of linear instability of solitary waves is obtained for both models. Moreover, the nonlinear stability and linear instability of the ground states solutions for both models is obtained for some specific regimen of parameters. Via a Lyapunov strategy and a variational analysis we obtain the stability of the blow-up of solitary waves for the critical fractional KdV equation.
