The nonlinear propagation of dust-acoustic (DA) waves (DAWs) and associated DA rogue waves (DARWs), which are governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, is theoretically investigated in a four component plasma medium containing inertial warm negatively charged dust grains and inertialess non-thermal distributed electrons as well as iso-thermal positrons and ions. The modulationally stable and unstable parametric regimes of DAWs are numerically studied for the plasma parameters. Furthermore, the effects of temperature ratios of ion-to-electron and ion-to-positron, and the number density of ion and dust grains on the DARWs are investigated. It is observed that the physical parameters play a very crucial role in the formation of DARWs. These results may be useful in understanding the electrostatic excitations in dusty plasmas in space and laboratory situations.

Transport properties of graphene - superconductor junction has been studied extensively to understand the interplay of the relativistic Dirac quasiparticles and superconductivity. Though shot noise measurements in graphene has been performed to realize many theoretical predictions, both at zero magnetic field as well as quantum Hall (QH) regime, its junction with superconductor remain unexplored. Here, we have carried out the shot noise measurements in an edge contacted bilayer graphene - Niobium superconductor junction at zero magnetic field as well as QH regime. At the Dirac point we have observed a Fano factor ~ 1/3 above the superconducting gap and a transition to an enhanced Fano factor ~ 0.5 below the superconducting gap. By changing the carrier density we have found a continuous reduction of Fano factor for both types of carriers, however the enhancement of Fano factor within the superconducting gap by a factor of ~ 1.5 is always preserved. The enhancement of shot noise is also observed in the QH regime, where the current is carried by the edge state, below the critical magnetic field and within the superconducting gap. These observations clearly demonstrate the enhanced charge transport at the graphene-superconductor interface.

Voting is a very important issue which can be beneficial in term of choosing the right leader in an election. A good leader can bring prosperity to a country and also can lead the country in the right direction every time. However, elections are surrounds with ballot forgery, coercion and multiple voting issues. Moreover, while giving votes, a person has to wait in a long queue and it is a very time consuming process. Blockchain is a distributed database in which data are shared with the participant of the node and each participant holds the same copy of the data. Blockchain has properties like distributed, pseudonymous, data integrity etc. In the paper, a fully decentralized evoting system based on blockchain technology is proposed. This protocol utilizes smart contract into the evoting system to deal with security issues, accuracy and voters privacy during the vote. The protocol results in a transparent, non editable and independently verifiable procedure that discards all the intended fraudulent activities occurring during the election process by removing the least participation of the third party and enabling voters right during the election. Both transparency and coercion are obtained at the same time.

We show that for a suitable choice of orthogonality space, Birkhoff-James orthogonality in a Banach space is a particular case of the orthogonality introduced by us. We characterize the right additivity of orthogonality in our setting and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a Banach space to be smooth as a corollary to our characterization. Finally, using our notion of orthogonality, we obtain a topological generalization of the Bhatia-Semrl Theorem.

We the employed muon spin rotation (muSR) technique to unveil the superconducting phase diagram of the dodecaboride ZrB12 and obtained clear evidence of both type-I and type-II characteristics. Most importantly, we found a region showing unusual behavior where the usually mutually exclusive muSR signatures of type-I and type-II superconductivity coexist. We reproduced that behavior in theoretical modeling that required taking into account multiple bands and multiple coherence lengths, which suggests that material has one coherence length larger and another smaller than the magnetic field penetration length (the type-1.5 regime). At stronger fields, a footprint of the type-II mixed state showing square flux-line lattice was also obtained using neutron diffraction.

Ecosystem Services are a bundle of natural processes and functions that are essential for human well-being, subsistence, and livelihood. The expansion of cultivation and cropland, which is the backbone of the Indian economy, is one of the main drivers of rapid Land Use Land Cover changes in India. To assess the impact of the Green Revolution led agrarian expansion on the total ecosystem service values, we first estimated the ESVs from 1985 to 2005 for eight ecoregions in India using several value transfer approaches. Five explanatory factors such as Total Crop Area, Crop Production, Crop Yield, Net Irrigated Area, and Crop** Intensity representing the crop** scenarios in the country were used in constructing local Geographical Weighted Regression model to explore the cumulative and individual effects on ESVs. A Multi-Layer Perceptron based Artificial Neural Network algorithm was employed to estimate the normalized importance of these explanatory factors. During the observation periods, cropland, forestland, and water bodies have contributed the most and form a significant proportion of ESVs, followed by grassland, mangrove, wetland, and urban builtup. In all three years, among the nine ESs, the highest ESV accounts for water regulation, followed by soil formation and soilwater retention, biodiversity maintenance, waste treatment, climate regulation, and gas regulation. Among the five explanatory factors, TCA, NIA, CP showed a strong positive association with ESVs, while the CI exhibited a negative association. The study reveals a strong association between GR led agricultural expansion and ESVs in India.

Here we report the design and synthesis of an imidazole derivative namely 1-benzyl-2,4,5-triaryl imidazole and its switching behaviour assembled onto Langmuir-Blodgett films. Monolayer characteristic of imidazole at the air-water interface has been studied by surface pressure vs area per molecule isotherm, hysteresis analysis and insitu Brewster Angle Microscopy . These studies indicated the formation of stable floating Langmuir film at the water subphase. Atomic Force Microscopy investigation confirmed the successful deposition of the Langmuir film onto solid substrate. Device consisted of 60 layers LB films of imidazole showed resistive bipolar switching behaviour irrespective of the first applied bias voltage polarity. Observed bipolar switching has been explained in terms of reduction oxidation process. Due to the presence of strong reducible group C double bond N in the imidazole core, reduction oxidation process takes place easily during bias. Presence of sharp reduction and oxidation peaks in the Cyclic Voltammetry measurement of 2 also supported this hypothesis. Presence of benzyl group with the imidazole core played the crucial rule in the reduction oxidation process and hence the switching behaviour. When benzyl group was replaced by a H then bipolar switching was not observed. In that case oxidizable group NH opposed the reduction process during bias. This type of bipolar switching is very promising for future technological applications in organic electronics.

The suppression of star formation in the inner kiloparsec regions of barred disk galaxies due to the action of bars is known as bar quenching. We investigate here the significance of bar quenching in the global quenching of star formation in the barred galaxies and their transformation to passive galaxies in the local Universe. We do this by measuring the offset of quenched barred galaxies from star-forming main sequence galaxies in the star formation rate-stellar mass plane and comparing it with the length of the bar, which is considered as a proxy of bar quenching. We constructed the star formation rate-stellar mass plane of 2885 local Universe face-on strong barred disk galaxies ($z<0.06$) identified by Galaxy Zoo. The barred disk galaxies studied here fall on the star formation main sequence relation with a significant scatter for galaxies above stellar mass 10$^{10.2}$ M$\odot$. We found that 34.97 $\%$ galaxies are within the intrinsic scatter (0.3 dex) of the main sequence relation, with a starburst population of 10.78 $\%$ (above the 0.3 dex) and a quenched population of 54.25 $\%$ (below the -0.3 dex) of the total barred disk galaxies in our sample. Significant neutral hydrogen (M$_{HI}$ >10$^{9}$ M$\odot$ with log M$_{HI}$/M$\star$ $\sim$ -1.0 to -0.5) is detected in the quenched barred galaxies with a similar gas content to that of the star-forming barred galaxies. We found that the offset of the quenched barred galaxies from the main sequence relation is not dependent on the length of the stellar bar. This implies that the bar quenching may not contribute significantly to the global quenching of star formation in barred galaxies. However, this observed result could also be due to other factors such as the dissolution of bars over time after star formation quenching, the effect of other quenching processes acting simultaneously, and/or the effects of environment.

Amorphous solids, confined on the nano-scale, exhibit a wealth of novel phenomena yet to be explored. In particular, the response of such solids to a mechanical load is not well understood and, as has been demonstrated experimentally, it differs strongly from bulk samples made of the same materials. Failure patterns and mechanisms are strongly affected by the geometry of the confinement and the interplay between interfacial effects in the sample and the time scale, imposed by an external mechanical field. Here, we present the mechanism of cavity formation in a confined model glass, subjected to expansion with a constant strain rate. This system is studied for varying geometric aspect ratio and sample size. Our results show that for a given temperature and straining condition, the sample shows cavitation when the aspect ratio reaches a critical value and below this aspect ratio the sample breaks by forming a neck. The critical aspect ratio is associated with a critical curvature of the neck that depends on strain rate and temperature. If this critical curvature is exceeded, the free energy of the system is minimized by the formation of a cavity. Our study reveals a novel mechanism of cavity formation on the nanoscale. This is probably a generic mechanism for material's failure in small confined systems under mechanical load.

We present an adaptive space-time phase field formulation for dynamic fracture of brittle shells. Their deformation is characterized by the Kirchhoff-Love thin shell theory using a curvilinear surface description. All kinematical objects are defined on the shell's mid-plane. The evolution equation for the phase field is determined by the minimization of an energy functional based on Griffith's theory of brittle fracture. Membrane and bending contributions to the fracture process are modeled separately and a thickness integration is established for the latter. The coupled system consists of two nonlinear fourth-order PDEs and all quantities are defined on an evolving two-dimensional manifold. Since the weak form requires $C^1$-continuity, isogeometric shape functions are used. The mesh is adaptively refined based on the phase field using Locally Refinable (LR) NURBS. Time is discretized based on a generalized-$α$ method using adaptive time-step**, and the discretized coupled system is solved with a monolithic Newton-Raphson scheme. The interaction between surface deformation and crack evolution is demonstrated by several numerical examples showing dynamic crack propagation and branching.

The present study makes use of the unprecedented capability of the Gaia mission to obtain the stellar parameters such as distance, age, and mass of HAeBe stars. The accuracy of Gaia DR2 astrometry is demonstrated from the comparison of the Gaia DR2 distances of 131 HAeBe stars with the previously estimated values from the literature. This is one of the initial studies to estimate the age and mass of a confirmed sample of HAeBe stars using both the photometry and distance from the Gaia mission. Mass accretion rates are calculated from $Hα$ line flux measurements of 106 HAeBe stars. Since we used distances and the stellar masses derived from the Gaia DR2 data in the calculation of mass accretion rate, our estimates are more accurate than previous studies. The mass accretion rate is found to decay exponentially with age, from which we estimated a disk dissipation timescale of $1.9\pm 0.1$ Myr. Mass accretion rate and stellar mass exhibits a power law relation of the form, $\dot{M}_{acc}$ $\propto$ $M_{*}^{2.8\pm0.2}$. From the distinct distribution in the values of the infrared spectral index, $n_{2-4.6}$, we suggest the possibility of difference in the disk structure between Herbig Be and Herbig Ae stars.

The efficiency of an ensemble-based optical quantum memory depends critically on the strength of the atom-light coupling. An optical cavity is an effective method to enhance atom-light coupling strength, with the drawback that cavities can be difficult to integrate into a memory setup. In this work we show coherent enhancement of atom-light coupling via an interference effect. The light to be absorbed into the atomic ensemble is split and used to drive the atoms from opposite ends of the ensemble. We compare this method theoretically to a cavity enhanced scheme and present experimental results for our coherent enhancement in cold rubidium-87 atoms that show an efficiency of $72\pm5\%$ and a storage lifetime of $110\pm 10$ us.

The physical processes related to the effect of bar in the quenching of star formation in the region between the nuclear/central sub-kpc region and the ends of the bar (bar-region) of spiral galaxies is not fully understood. It is hypothesized that the bar can either stabilize the gas against collapse, inhibiting star formation or efficiently consume all the available gas, with no fuel for further star formation. We present a multi-wavelength study using the archival data of an early-type barred spiral galaxy, Messier 95, which shows signatures of suppressed star formation in the bar-region. Using the optical, ultraviolet, infrared, CO and HI imaging data we study the pattern of star formation progression, stellar/gas distribution and try to provide insights on the process responsible for the observed pattern. The FUV$-$NUV pixel colour map reveals a cavity devoid of UV flux in the bar-region that interestingly matches with the length of the bar ($\sim$ 4.2kpc). The central nuclear region of the galaxy is showing a blue color clump and along the major-axis of the stellar bar the colour progressively becomes redder. Based on a comparison to single stellar population models, we show that the region of galaxy along the major-axis of the bar (unlike the region outside the bar) is comprised of stellar populations with ages $\geq$ 350 Myr, with a star-forming clump in the center of younger ages ($\sim$ 150Myr). Interestingly the bar-region is also devoid of neutral and molecular hydrogen but with an abundant molecular hydrogen present at the nuclear region of the galaxy. Our results are consistent with a picture in which the stellar bar in Messier 95 is redistributing the gas by funneling gas inflows to nuclear region, thus making the bar-region devoid of fuel for star formation.

We present the results of time-series photometric analysis of 15106 A-K type stars observed by the Kepler space mission. We identified 513 new rotational variables and measured their starspot rotation periods as a function of spectral type and discuss the distribution of their amplitudes. We examined the well-established period-colour relationship that applies to stars of spectral types F5-K for all of these rotational variables and, interestingly, found that a similar period-colour relationship appears to extend to stars of spectral types A7 to early-F too. This result is not consistent with the very foundation of the period-colour relationship. We have characterized 350 new non-radial pulsating variables such as A- and F-type candidate $δ$ Scuti, $γ$ Doradus and hybrid stars, which increases the known candidate non-radial pulsators in the Kepler field significantly, by $\sim$20\%. The relationship between two recently constructed observables, $Energy$ and $Efficiency$, was also studied for the large sample of non-radial pulsators, which shows that the distribution in the logarithm of $Energy$ ($\log(En)$) can be used as a potential tool to distinguish between the non-radial pulsators, to some extent. Through visual inspection of the light curves and their corresponding frequency spectra, we found 23 new candidate red giant solar-like oscillators not previously reported in the literature. The basic physical parameters such as masses, radii and luminosities of these solar-like oscillators were also derived using asteroseismic relations.

We introduce L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces and show that it has natural connections with our present study. We also prove that for any strictly convex Banach space $ X $ and any finite-dimensional polygonal Banach space $ Y, $ the pair $ (X,Y) $ does not have L-P property. Finally, we obtain a characterization of Hilbert spaces among strictly convex Banach spaces in terms of L-P property.

Superconductivity and quantum Hall effect are distinct states of matter occurring in apparently incompatible physical conditions. Recent theoretical developments suggest that the coupling of quantum Hall effect with a superconductor can provide a fertile ground for realizing exotic topological excitations such as non-abelian Majorana fermions or Fibonacci particles. As a step toward that goal, we report observation of Andreev reflection at the junction of a quantum Hall edge state in a single layer graphene and a quasi-two dimensional niobium diselenide (NbSe2) superconductor. Our principal finding is the observation of an anomalous finite-temperature conductance peak located precisely at the Dirac point, providing a definitive evidence for inter-Landau level Andreev reflection in a quantum Hall system. Our observations are well supported by detailed numerical simulations, which offer additional insight into the role of the edge states in Andreev physics. This study paves the way for investigating analogous Andreev reflection in a fractional quantum Hall system coupled to a superconductor to realize exotic quasiparticles.

In this context, the key aspect of our study is to consider norming sequences for a bounded linear operator, instead of norm attaining elements. We also obtain a complete characterization of smoothness of bounded linear operators between real normed linear spaces, when the corresponding norm attainment set non-empty. This illustrates the importance of the norm attainment set in the study of smoothness of bounded linear operators. Finally, we prove that Gâteaux differentiability and Fréchet differentiability are equivalent for compact operators in the space of bounded linear operators between a reflexive Kadets-Klee Banach space and a Fréchet differentiable normed linear space, endowed with the usual operator norm.

Light-induced instabilities/degradation in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells are a prevalent and urgent issue to resolve to improve performance, uniformity, and reliability. Here, mechanisms contributing to light-induced instabilities are identified focusing on an observed short circuit current (JSC) reduction. External quantum efficiency measurements before and after light soaking identified a reduction in long wavelength photon carrier collection efficiency in the CIGS absorber layer. Using deep level optical spectroscopy (DLOS), the concentration of CIGS EV+0.98 eV deep level is correlated with the amount of JSC degradation, Finally, capacitance voltage (C-V) measurements reveal light induces a large reduction in the depletion depth and reduction of carrier collection and are all correlated with the JSC reduction. Finally, the EV+0.53 eV trap concentrations are shown to correlate with VOC instability but not the JSC reduction confirming that multiple trap-induced mechanism are responsible for the light-induced instabilities.

Many important physical processes have dynamics that are too complex to completely model analytically. Optimisation of such processes often relies on intuition, trial-and-error, or the construction of empirical models. Machine learning based on artificial neural networks has emerged as an efficient means to develop empirical models of complex systems. We implement a deep artificial neural network to optimise the magneto-optic cooling and trap** of neutral atomic ensembles. Cold atomic ensembles have become commonplace in laboratories around the world, however, many-body interactions give rise to complex dynamics that preclude precise analytic optimisation of the cooling and trap** process. The solution identified by machine learning is radically different to the smoothly varying adiabatic solutions currently used. Despite this, the solutions vastly outperform best known solutions producing higher optical densities. This may provide a pathway to a new understanding of the dynamics of the cooling and trap** processes in cold atomic ensembles.

We completely characterize extreme contractions between two-dimensional strictly convex and smooth real Banach spaces, perhaps for the very first time. In order to obtain the desired characterization, we introduce the notions of (weakly) compatible point pair (CPP) and $ μ- $compatible point pair ($ μ- $CPP) in the geometry of Banach spaces. As a concrete application of our abstract results, we describe all rank one extreme contractions in $ \mathbb{L}(\ell_4^2, \ell_4^2) $ and $ \mathbb{L}(\ell_4^2, \mathbb{H}) $, where $\mathbb{H}$ is any Hilbert space. We also prove that there does not exist any rank one extreme contractions in $ \mathbb{L}(\mathbb{H}, \ell_{p}^2), $ whenever $ p $ is even and $\mathbb{H}$ is any Hilbert space. We further study extreme contractions between infinite-dimensional Banach spaces and obtain some analogous results. Finally, we characterize real Hilbert spaces among real Banach spaces in terms of CPP, that substantiates our motivation behind introducing these new geometric notions.

An ion-beam compressed by an external electric force is characterized by a unique non-equilibrium distribution function. This is a special case of Tsallis distribution with entropy index q=2, which allows the system to possess appreciably low thermal energy. The thermal radiation by such compressed ion-beam has been investigated in this work. As the system is non extensive, Planck law of radiation has been modified using Tsallis thermostatistics for the investigation of the system. The average energy of radiation has been derived by introducing the non extensive partition function in the statistical relation of internal energy. The spectral energy density, spectral radiation and total radiation power have also been computed. It is seen that a microwave radiation will be emitted by the compressed ion-beam. The fusion energy gain Q (ratio of the output fusion power to the power consumed by the system) according to the proposed scheme (R. K. Paul 2015) using compressed ion-beam by electric field will not change significantly as the radiated power is very small.

In this work, methods to determine more accurate do** profiles in semiconductors is explored where trap-induced artifacts such as hysteresis and do** artifacts are observed. Specifically in CIGS, it is shown that this fast capacitance-voltage (C-V) approach presented here allows for accurate do** profile measurement even at room temperature, which is typically not possible due to the large ratio of trap concentration to do**. Using deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurement, the deep trap responsible for the abnormal C-V measurement above 200 K is identified. Importantly, this fast C-V can be used for fast evaluation on the production line to monitor the true do** concentration, and even estimate the trap concentration. Additionally, the influence of high conductance on the apparent do** profile at different temperature is investigated.

We characterize both the notions of approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the space of bounded linear operators defined on a normed space. A complete characterization of approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the space of bounded linear operators defined on Hilbert space of any dimension is obtained which improves on the recent result by Chmieliński et al. [ J. Chmieliński, T. Stypula and P. Wójcik, \textit{Approximate orthogonality in normed spaces and its applications}, Linear Algebra and its Applications, \textbf{531} (2017), 305--317.], in which they characterized approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality of linear operators on finite dimensional Hilbert space and also of compact operators on any Hilbert space.

Abstract:
We study two notions of approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality in a normed space, from a geometric point of view, and characterize them in terms of normal cones. We further explore the interconnection between normal cones and approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality to obtain a complete characterization of normal cones in a two-dimensional smooth Banach space. We also obtain a uniqueness theorem…

In this paper, we study Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bounded linear operators and give a complete characterization of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bounded linear operators on infinite dimensional real normed linear spaces. As an application of the results obtained, we prove a simple but useful characterization of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bounded linear functionals defined on a real normed linear space, provided the dual space is strictly convex. We also provide separate necessary and sufficient conditions for smoothness of bounded linear operators on infinite dimensional normed linear spaces.

Shortcut to adiabaticity (STA) techniques have the potential to drive a system beyond the adiabatic limits. Here, we present a robust and efficient method for wireless power transfer (WPT) between two coils based on the so-called transitionless quantum driving (TQD) algorithm. We show that it is possible to transfer power between the coils significantly fast compared to its adiabatic counterpart. The scheme is fairly robust against the variations in the coupling strength and the coupling distance between the coils. Also, the scheme is found to be reasonably immune to intrinsic losses in the coils.
