The conditional disclosure of secrets (CDS) primitive is among the simplest cryptographic settings in which to study the relationship between communication, randomness, and security. CDS involves two parties, Alice and Bob, who do not communicate but who wish to reveal a secret $z$ to a referee if and only if a Boolean function $f$ has $f(x,y)=1$. Alice knows $x,z$, Bob knows $y$, and the referee knows $x,y$. Recently, a quantum analogue of this primitive called CDQS was defined and related to $f$-routing, a task studied in the context of quantum position-verification. CDQS has the same inputs, outputs, and communication pattern as CDS but allows the use of shared entanglement and quantum messages. We initiate the systematic study of CDQS, with the aim of better understanding the relationship between privacy and quantum resources in the information theoretic setting. We begin by looking for quantum analogues of results already established in the classical CDS literature. Doing so we establish a number of basic properties of CDQS, including lower bounds on entanglement and communication stated in terms of measures of communication complexity. Because of the close relationship to the $f$-routing position-verification scheme, our results have relevance to the security of these schemes.

We show how to encode the radiative degrees of freedom in $4$-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes, using the boundary Cotton and stress tensors. Background radiation leads to a reduction of the asymptotic symmetry group, in contrast to asymptotically flat spacetimes, where a non-vanishing news tensor does not restrict the asymptotic symmetries. Null gauges, such as $Λ$-BMS, provide a framework for AdS spacetimes that include radiation in the flat limit. We use this to check that the flat limit of the radiative data matches the expected definition in intrinsically asymptotically flat spacetimes. We further dimensionally reduce our construction to the celestial sphere, and show how the $2$-dimensional celestial currents can be extracted from the $3$-dimensional boundary data.

The Celestial Holography program encompasses recent efforts to understand the flat space hologram in terms of a CFT living on the celestial sphere. A key development instigating these efforts came from understanding how soft limits of scattering encode infinite dimensional symmetry enhancements corresponding to the asymptotic symmetry group of the bulk spacetime. Historically, the construction of the bulk-boundary dual pair has followed bottom up approach matching symmetries on both sides. Recently, however, there has been exciting progress in formulating top down descriptions using insights from twisted holography. This chapter reviews salient aspects of the celestial construction, the status of the dictionary, and active research directions. This is a preprint version of a chapter prepared for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics 2nd edition.

We study features of celestial CFT correlation functions when the bulk theory is itself a CFT. We show that conformal inversions in the bulk map boost eigenstates to shadow transformed boost eigenstates. This is demonstrated explicitly for the wavefunctions of free massless scalars, and finds interesting applications to building extrapolate dictionaries. Because inversions exchange null infinity and the light cone of the origin, one finds a relation between the massless extrapolate dictionary -- involving correlators of operators inserted along null infinity -- and the slice-by-slice extrapolate dictionary recently studied by Sleight and Taronna starting from the hyperbolic foliation of de Boer and Solodukhin. Namely, boundary correlators of Sleight and Taronna coincide with celestial amplitudes of shadow transformed boost eigenstates. These considerations are unified by lifting celestial correlators to the Einstein cylinder. This also sheds new light on the extraction of the $S$-matrix from the flat limit of AdS/CFT.

The purpose of this paper is to study the holomorphic multicollinear limit of (celestial) amplitudes and use it to further investigate the double residue condition for (hard celestial) amplitudes and the celestial operator product expansion. We first set up the notion of holomorphic multicollinear limits of amplitudes and derive the 3-collinear splitting functions for Yang-Mills theory, Einstein gravity, and massless $φ^3$ theory. In particular, we find that in $φ^3$ theory the celestial 3-OPE contains a term with a branch cut. This explicit example confirms that branch cuts can obstruct the double residue condition for hard celestial amplitudes, which is the underlying cause of the celestial Jacobi identities not holding for certain theories. This addresses an ongoing debate in the literature about associativity of the celestial OPEs and concretely demonstrates a new (multi-particle) term in the celestial OPE coming from the multi-particle channel in the amplitudes.

This paper presents a systematic cataloging of the generators of celestial symmetries on phase space. Starting from the celestial OPEs, we first show how to extract a representation of the general-spin analog of the wedge subalgebra of $w_{1+\infty}$ on the phase space of massless matter fields of arbitrary helicity. These generators can be expressed as light-sheet operators that are quadratic in the matter fields at future or past null infinity. We next show how to extend these symmetries beyond the wedge. Doing so requires us to augment the quadratic operators with: 1) linear terms corresponding to primary descendants of the negative helicity gauge fields the matter modes couple to, and 2) a tower of higher-particle composite operator contributions. These modes can be realized as light-ray operators supported on generators of null infinity, but local on the celestial sphere. Finally, we construct a representation of the celestial symmetries that captures how the positive helicity gauge fields transform. We close by discussing how these celestial symmetries inform our choice of detector operators.

We then compute generic 2, 3 and 4-point celestial amplitudes for massless external states in the ambidextrous basis prepared by composing this $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ intertwiner with the usual celestial map between momentum and boost eigenstates. The results are non-distributional in the celestial coordinates $(z,\bar{z})$ and conformally covariant in all scattering channels. In its original formulation there is an obstruction to reproducing the expected TT OPE in the double soft limit. We propose a modification to the definition which circumvents this obstruction and then extend this change of basis beyond the conformally soft and single helicity sectors. In the process we investigate how (non)-commutativity of double soft limits is tied to the decoupling of primary descendants, and how our choice of celestial basis determines which symmetries are manifest at the level of the OPE beyond the MHV sector.

Poincaré invariance imposes additional selection rules on the allowed positions of operators. As a consequence, $n$-point correlators are only supported on certain patches of the celestial sphere, depending on the labeling of each operator as incoming/outgoing. Here we initiate a study of the celestial geometry, examining the kinematic support of celestial amplitudes for different crossing channels. We give simple geometric rules for determining this support. For $n\ge 5$, we can view these channels as tiling together to form a covering of the celestial sphere. Our analysis serves as a step** off point to better understand the analyticity of celestial correlators and illuminate the connection between the 4D kinematic and 2D CFT notions of crossing symmetry.

We consider massless scattering from the point of view of the position, momentum, and celestial bases. In these three languages different properties of physical processes become manifest or obscured. Within the soft sector, they highlight distinct aspects of the infrared triangle: quantum field theory soft theorems arise in the limit of vanishing energy $ω$, memory effects are described via shifts of fields at the boundary along the null time coordinate $u$, and celestial symmetry algebras are realized via currents that appear at special values of the conformal dimension $Δ$. We focus on the subleading soft theorems at $Δ=1-s$ for gauge theory $(s=1)$ and gravity $(s=2)$ and explore how to translate the infrared triangle to the celestial basis. We resolve an existing tension between proposed overleading gauge transformations as examined in the position basis and the `Goldstone-like' modes where we expect celestial symmetry generators to appear. In the process we elucidate various order-of-limits issues implicit in the celestial formalism. We then generalize our construction to the tower of $w_{1+\infty}$ generators in celestial CFT, which probe further subleading-in-$ω$ soft behavior and are related to subleading-in-$r$ vacuum transitions that measure higher multipole moments of scatterers. In the end we see that the celestial basis is `just right' for identifying the symmetry structure.

This has led to a proposed holographic duality between the gravitational $\mathcal{S}$-matrix and a dual field theory living on the celestial sphere. Most of our current understanding of the dictionary relies on knowledge of the 4D bulk. As such, identifying intrinsic 2D models that capture the correct symmetries and soft dynamics of 4D gravity is an active area of interest. Here we propose that a 2D generalization of SYK provides an instructive toy model for the soft limit of the gravitational sector in 4D asymptotically flat spacetime. We find that the symmetries and soft dynamics of the 2D SYK model capture the salient features of the celestial theory: exhibiting chaotic dynamics, conformal invariance, and a $w_{1+\infty}$ symmetry. The holographic map from 2D SYK operators to the 4D bulk employs the Penrose twistor transform.

Celestial holography proposes a duality between gravitational scattering in asymptotically flat space-time and a conformal field theory living on the celestial sphere. Its dictionary relates the infinite dimensional space-time symmetry group to Ward identities of the CFT. The spontaneous breaking of these asymptotic symmetries governs the dynamics of the soft sector in the CFT. Here we show that this sector encodes non-trivial backreaction effects that exhibit characteristics of maximal quantum chaos. A key element in the derivation is the identification of the Hilbert space of celestial CFT, defined through radial quantization, with that of a constantly accelerating Rindler observer. From the point of view of the bulk, Rindler particles exhibit Lyapunov behavior due to shockwave interactions that shift the observer horizon. From the point of view of the boundary, the superrotation Goldstone modes affect the relevant representations of the celestial Virasoro symmetry in a manner that induces Lyapunov behavior of out-of-time-ordered celestial correlators.

Celestial diamonds encode the global conformal multiplets of the conformally soft sector, elucidating the role of soft theorems, symmetry generators and Goldstone modes. Upon adding supersymmetry they stack into a pyramid. Here we treat the soft charges associated to the fermionic layers that tie this structure together. This extends the analysis of conformally soft currents for photons and gravitons which have been shown to generate asymptotic symmetries in gauge theory and gravity to infinite-dimensional fermionic symmetries. We construct fermionic charge operators in 2D celestial CFT from a suitable inner product between 4D bulk field operators and spin $s=\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{3}{2}$ conformal primary wavefunctions with definite SL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) conformal dimension $Δ$ and spin $J$ where $|J|\leq s$. The generator for large supersymmetry transformations is identified as the conformally soft gravitino primary operator with $Δ=\frac{1}{2}$ and its shadow with $Δ=\frac{3}{2}$ which form the left and right corners of the celestial gravitino diamond. We continue this analysis to the subleading soft gravitino and soft photino which are captured by degenerate celestial diamonds. Despite the absence of a gauge symmetry in these cases, they give rise to conformally soft factorization theorems in celestial amplitudes and complete the celestial pyramid.

The operators appearing at their left and right corners give rise to conformally soft factorization theorems, the bottom corners correspond to conserved charges, and the top corners to conformal dressings. We show that conformally soft charges can be expressed in terms of light ray integrals that select modes of the appropriate conformal weights. They reside at the bottom corners of memory diamonds, and ascend to generalized currents. We then identify the top corners of the associated Goldstone diamonds with conformal Faddeev-Kulish dressings and compute the sub-leading conformally soft dressings in gauge theory and gravity which are important for finding nontrivial central extensions. This explicit construction is achieved using a wavefunction-based approach that allows us to map 4D scattering amplitudes to celestial CFT correlators of operators with SL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) conformal dimension $Δ$ and spin $J$. Radiative conformal primary wavefunctions have $J=\pm s$ and give rise to conformally soft theorems for special values of $Δ\in \frac{1}{2}\mathbb{Z}$. They are located either at the top of celestial diamonds, where they descend to trivial null primaries, or at the left and right corners, where they descend both to and from generalized conformal primary wavefunctions which have $|J|\leq s$. We build on the observation by Hawking, Perry and Strominger that a global black hole space-time supports a large number of soft hair degrees of freedom to shed new light on the firewall argument by Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully. We propose that the soft hair Goldstone mode is encoded in a classical transition function that connects the asymptotic and near horizon region. The entropy carried by the soft hair is part of the black hole entropy and encoded in the outside geometry. We argue that the infalling observer automatically measures the classical value of the soft mode before reaching the horizon and that this measurement implements a code subspace projection that enables the reconstruction of interior operators. We use the soft hair dynamics to introduce an observer dependent notion of the firewall and show that for an infalling observer it recedes inwards into the black hole interior: the observer never encounters a firewall before reaching the singularity. Our results indicate that the HPS black hole soft hair plays an essential role in dissolving the AMPS firewall.

We provide a unified treatment of conformally soft Goldstone modes which arise when spin-one or spin-two conformal primary wavefunctions become pure gauge for certain integer values of the conformal dimension $Δ$. This effort lands us at the crossroads of two ongoing debates about what the appropriate conformal basis for celestial CFT is and what the asymptotic symmetry group of Einstein gravity at null infinity should be. Finite energy wavefunctions are captured by the principal continuous series $Δ\in 1+i\mathbb{R}$ and form a complete basis. We show that conformal primaries with analytically continued conformal dimension can be understood as certain contour integrals on the principal series. This clarifies how conformally soft Goldstone modes fit in but do not augment this basis. Conformally soft gravitons of dimension two and zero which are related by a shadow transform are shown to generate superrotations and non-meromorphic diffeomorphisms of the celestial sphere which we refer to as shadow superrotations. This dovetails the Virasoro and Diff(S$^2$) asymptotic symmetry proposals and puts on equal footing the discussion of their associated soft charges, which correspond to the stress tensor and its shadow in the two-dimensional celestial CFT.

The goal of this paper is to explore those properties of a resolved E$_7$-model which are not invariant under flops. In particular, we examine the fiber degenerations, identify the fibral divisors up to isomorphism, and study violation of flatness appearing over certain codimension-three loci in the base, where a component of the fiber grows in dimension from a rational curve to a rational surface. For each crepant resolution, we compute the triple intersection polynomial and the linear form induced by the second Chern class, as well as the holomorphic and ordinary Euler characteristics, and the signature of each fibral divisor. We identify the isomorphism classes of the rational surfaces that break the flatness of the fibration. Moreover, we explicitly show that the D$_4$ flops correspond to the crepant resolutions of the orbifold given by $\mathbb{C}^3$ quotiented by the Klein four-group.

We show that the suspended pinch point can be seen as an elliptically fibered variety with singular fibers of type I$_2$ over codimension-one points of the base and a torsionless Mordell--Weil group of rank one. In the F-theory algorithm, this corresponds to a Lie group $SU(2)\times U(1)$. We also identify the matter content as given by the direct sum of the adjoint representation (with zero U($1$)-charge) and the fundamental representation with U($1$)-charge $\pm 1$. We then study the geometry of an SU($2$)$\times$U($1$)-model given by a compact elliptically fibered variety with the singularities of a suspended pinch point. We describe in detail the crepant resolutions and the network of flops of this geometry. We compute topological invariants including the Euler characteristic and Hodge numbers. We also study the weak coupling limit of this geometry and show that it corresponds to an orientifold theory with an Sp($1$)-stack transverse to the orientifold and two brane-image-branes wrap** the orientifold.

A framework of connections between asymptotic symmetries, soft theorems, and memory effects has recently shed light on a universal structure associated with infrared physics. Here, we show how this pattern has been used to fill in missing elements. After the necessary groundwork, we begin by proving a Ward identity for superrotations using the subleading soft graviton theorem, thereby demonstrating a semiclassical Virasoro symmetry for scattering in quantum gravity. Next, we show there exists a new spin memory effect associated with this symmetry, explain more generally how the connections between the vertices of the infrared triangle predicted this, and describe what other examples and variations have been unveiled. Taking to heart this newly motivated Virasoro symmetry, we review how the soft theorem has been recast as a Virasoro Ward identity for a putative two dimensional conformal field theory. This derivation relies upon a map from plane wave scattering states to a conformal primary basis, which we then construct. We provide examples of familiar scattering amplitudes recast in this basis and discuss the somewhat exotic nature of the putative CFT2. We conclude by describing ongoing efforts to tame some of these features and what this change of basis in turn has taught us about the infrared limit which began our story.

Euclidean AdS3 slices fill the past and future lightcones of the origin, while dS3 slices fill the region outside the lightcone. The resulting link between 4D asymptotically flat quantum gravity and AdS3/CFT2 is explored in this paper. The 4D superrotations in the extended BMS4 group are found to act as the familiar conformal transformations on the 3D hyperbolic slices, map** each slice to itself. The associated 4D superrotation charge is constructed in the covariant phase space formalism. The soft part gives the 2D stress tensor, which acts on the celestial sphere at the boundary of the hyperbolic slices, and is shown to be an uplift to 4D of the familiar 3D holographic AdS3 stress tensor. Finally, we find that 4D quantum gravity contains an unexpected second, conformally soft, dimension (2, 0) mode that is symplectically paired with the celestial stress tensor.

We study solutions of the Klein-Gordon, Maxwell, and linearized Einstein equations in $\mathbb{R}^{1,d+1}$ that transform as $d$-dimensional conformal primaries under the Lorentz group $SO(1,d+1)$. Such solutions, called conformal primary wavefunctions, are labeled by a conformal dimension $Δ$ and a point in $\mathbb{R}^d$, rather than an on-shell $(d+2)$-dimensional momentum. We show that the continuum of scalar conformal primary wavefunctions on the principal continuous series $Δ\in \frac d2+ i\mathbb{R}$ of $SO(1,d+1)$ spans a complete set of normalizable solutions to the wave equation. In the massless case, with or without spin, the transition from momentum space to conformal primary wavefunctions is implemented by a Mellin transform. As a consequence of this construction, scattering amplitudes in this basis transform covariantly under $SO(1,d+1)$ as $d$-dimensional conformal correlators.

The four-dimensional (4D) Lorentz group $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ acts as the two-dimensional (2D) global conformal group on the celestial sphere at infinity where asymptotic 4D scattering states are specified. Consequent similarities of 4D flat space amplitudes and 2D correlators on the conformal sphere are obscured by the fact that the former are usually expressed in terms of asymptotic wavefunctions which transform simply under spacetime translations rather than the Lorentz $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we construct on-shell massive scalar wavefunctions in 4D Minkowski space that transform as $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ conformal primaries. Scattering amplitudes of these wavefunctions are $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ covariant by construction. For certain mass relations, we show explicitly that their three-point amplitude reduces to the known unique form of a 2D CFT primary three-point function and compute the coefficient. The computation proceeds naturally via Witten-like diagrams on a hyperbolic slicing of Minkowski space and has a holographic flavor.

Asymptotic symmetries of theories with gravity in d=2m+2 spacetime dimensions are reconsidered for m>1 in light of recent results concerning d=4 BMS symmetries. Weinberg's soft graviton theorem in 2m+2 dimensions is re-expressed as a Ward identity for the gravitational S-matrix. The corresponding asymptotic symmetries are identified with 2m+2-dimensional supertranslations. An alternate derivation of these asymptotic symmetries as diffeomorphisms which preserve finite-energy boundary conditions at null infinity and act non-trivially on physical data is given. Our results differ from those of previous analyses whose stronger boundary conditions precluded supertranslations for d>4. We find for all even d that supertranslation symmetry is spontaneously broken in the conventional vacuum and identify soft gravitons as the corresponding Goldstone bosons.
