Heterostructures from complex oxides allow one to combine various electronic and magnetic orders as to induce new quantum states. A prominent example is the coupling between superconducting and magnetic orders in multilayers from high-Tc cuprates and manganites. A key role is played here by the interfacial CuO2 layer whose distinct properties remain to be fully understood. Here, we study with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) the magnon excitations of this interfacial CuO2 layer. In particular, we show that the underlying antiferromagnetic exchange interaction at the interface is strongly suppressed to J ~ 70 meV, as compared to J ~ 130 meV for the CuO2 layers away from the interface. Moreover, we observe an anomalous momentum dependence of the intensity of the interfacial magnon mode and show that it suggests that the antiferromagnetic order is accompanied by a particular kind of orbital order that yields a so-called altermagnetic state. Such a two-dimensional altermagnet has recently been predicted to enable new spintronic applications and superconducting proximity effects.

The highly mobile electrons at the interface of SrTiO3 with other oxide insulators, such as LaAlO3 or AlOx, are of great current interest. A vertical gate voltage allows controlling a metal/superconductor-to-insulator transition, as well as electrical modulation of the spin-orbit Rashba coupling for spin-charge conversion. These findings raise important questions about the origin of the confined electrons as well as the mechanisms that govern the interfacial electric field. Here we use infrared ellipsometry and confocal Raman spectroscopy to show that an anomalous polar moment is induced at the interface that is non-collinear, highly asymmetric and hysteretic with respect to the vertical gate electric field. Our data indicate that an important role is played by the electromigration of oxygen vacancies and their clustering at the antiferrodistortive domain boundaries of SrTiO3, which generates local electric and possibly also flexoelectric fields and subsequent polar moments with a large lateral component. Our results open new perspectives for the defect engineering of lateral devices with strongly enhanced and hysteretic local electric fields that can be manipulated with various other parameters, like strain, temperature, or photons.

We present an experimental study of the quasi-elastic Raman scattering (QES) of plane-wave and twisted light by liquid crystals. Depending on their temperature, these crystals can exhibit isotropic, nematic and chiral nematic phases. The question is addressed of how the phase of a crystal and the state of incident light can affect the quasi-elastic energy spectra of the scattered radiation, whose shape is usually described by the combination of Lorentzian and Gaussian components. Special attention is paid to the \textit{chiral phase}, for which the Raman QES spectrum is dominated by a Lorentzian with reduced linewidth, pointing to diminished disorder and configurational entropy. Moreover, this phase is also known for a regime of iridescence (selective backscattering) which arises when the wavelength of incident light becomes comparable with the chiral pitch length. Detailed measurements, performed in this \textit{resonant} regime and by employing twisted light, carrying various projections of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), have indicated a low-energy scattering surplus depending on OAM. We argue that this observation might indicate a transfer of angular momentum between light and the liquid crystal.

The magnetic response of CaK(Fe$_{0.949}$Ni$_{0.051}$)$_4$As$_4$ was investigated by means of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation. The long-range commensurate magnetic order sets in below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}= 50.0(5)$~K. The density-functional theory calculations have identified three possible muon stop** sites. The experimental data were found to be consistent with only one type of magnetic structure, namely, the long-range magnetic spin-vortex-crystal order with the hedgehog motif within the $ab-$plane and the antiferromagnetic stacking along the $c-$direction. The value of the ordered magnetic moment at $T\approx3$ K was estimated to be $m_{\rm Fe}=0.38(11)$ $μ_{\rm B}$ ($μ_{\rm B}$ is the Bohr magneton). A microscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting phases accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic order parameter below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq 9$ K is observed. Comparison with 11, 122, and 1144 families of Fe-based pnictides points to existence of correlation between the reduction of the magnetic order parameter at $T\rightarrow 0$ and the ratio of the transition temperatures $T_{\rm c}/T_{\rm N}$. Such correlations were found to be described by Machida's model for coexistence of itinerant spin-density wave magnetism and superconductivity [Machida, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 50, 2195 (1981) and Bud'ko et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 144520 (2018)].

The magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of underdoped $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$ (BNFA) single crystals with $0.19 \leq x\leq 0.34$ has been investigated with the complementary muon-spin-rotation ($μ$SR) and infrared spectroscopy techniques. The focus has been on the different antiferromagnetic states in the underdoped regime and their competition with superconductivity, especially for the ones with a tetragonal crystal structure and a so-called double-$Q$ magnetic order. Besides the collinear state with a spatially inhomogeneous spin-charge-density wave (i-SCDW) order at $x=0.24$ and $0.26$, that was previously identified in BNFA, we obtained evidence for an orthomagnetic state with a "hedgehog"-type spin vortex crystal (SVC) structure at $x=0.32$ and $0.34$. Whereas in the former i-SCDW state the infrared spectra show no sign of a superconducting response down to the lowest measured temperature of about 10K, in the SVC state there is a strong superconducting response similar to the one at optimum do**. The magnetic order is strongly suppressed here in the superconducting state and at $x=0.34$ there is even a partial re-entrance into a paramagnetic state at $T<<T_c$.

In addition, new excitations with small linewidths emerge below $T = 150$ K, and are assigned to two-magnon scattering processes with the participation of flat-band and high energy magnon branches. From this a set of exchange coupling constants is estimated. The specific ratio of the saw-tooth spine-spine and spine-vertex interactions may explain the instability of the dimer quantum ground state against an incommensurate 3D magnetic order.

We observe an unusual lattice dynamics over a large temperature regime as well as evidence for an orbital instability preceding the spin-Peierls transition. We relate different intrachain exchange interactions of the high temperature compared to the spin-Peierls phase to a modification of the orbital ordering pattern. In particular, our observation of a high energy excitation of mixed electronic and lattice origin suggests an exotic dimerization process different from other spin-Peierls materials.

Polarized Raman-scattering spectra of superconducting, single-crystalline FeSe evidence pronounced phonon anomalies with temperature reduction. A large 6.5% hardening of the B_1g(Fe) phonon mode is attributed to the suppression of local fluctuations of the iron spin state with the gradual decrease of the iron paramagnetic moment. The ab-initio lattice dynamic calculations support this conclusion. The enhancement of the low-frequency spectral weight above the structural phase transition temperature T_s and its change below T_s is discussed in relation with the opening of an energy gap between low (S=0) and higher spin states which prevents magnetic order in FeSe. The very narrow phonon line widths compared to observations in FeTe suggests the absence of intermediate spin states in the fluctuating spin state manifold in FeSe.

The low-dimensional s=1/2 compound (NO)[Cu(NO3)3] has recently been suggested to follow the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model of coupled spin chains. Such a system shows unbound spinon excitations and a resonating valence bond ground state due spin frustration. Our Raman scattering study demonstrates phonon anomalies as well as the suppression of a broad magnetic scattering continuum for temperatures below a characteristic temperature, T<T*=100K. We interpret these effects as evidence for a dynamical interplay of spin and lattice degrees of freedom that might lead to a further transition into a dimerized or structurally distorted phase at lower temperatures.

The magnetic properties of polycrystaline La0.5Ba0.5CoO2.5+d (d = 0.44 and 0.485) where investigated using muon spin relaxation and bulk magnetization experiments. Below a Curie temperature of T_C = 160 K and 180 K, respectively, a magnetic phase with a macroscopic ferromagnetic moment forms. muSR proves that the full volume inhomogeneously orders at T_C but that there is microscopically a phase separation into phase volumes possessing a fully static and a slow magnetic dynamic behavior. A peak in the dynamic relaxation rate 35 K respectively 55 K below the Curie temperature indicates the freezing of spin components. The spin fluctuations are thermally activated with a typical Jahn-Teller like phonon energy of E_a = 340 K. Together with co-operative Jahn-Teller distortions appearing below the spin freezing temperature, this points to a strong magneto elastic coupling as the cause for the magnetic fluctuations and the spin freezing.

We study the interaction of the FeAs and R (rare earth) electronic systems in the non superconducting magnetically ordered parent compounds of RFeAsO{1-x}Fx superconductors via a detailed comparison of the local hyperfine fields at the muon site with available Moessbauer spectroscopy and neutron scattering data. These studies provide microscopic evidence of long range commensurate magnetic Fe order with the Fe moments not varying by more than 15 % within the series RFeAsO with R = La, Ce, Pr, and Sm. At low temperatures, long range R magnetic order is also observed. Different combined Fe and R magnetic structures are proposed for all compounds using the muon site in the crystal structure obtained by electronic potential calculations. Our data point to a strong effect of R order on the iron subsystem in the case of different symmetry of Fe and R order parameters resulting in a Fe spin reorientation in the R ordered phase in PrFeAsO. Our symmetry analysis proves the absence of collinear Fe--R Heisenberg interactions in RFeAsO. A strong Fe--Ce coupling due to non--Heisenberg anisotropic exchange is found in CeFeAsO which results in a large staggered Ce magnetization induced by the magnetically ordered Fe sublattice far above T_N{Ce}. Finally, we argue that the magnetic R--Fe interaction is probably not crucial for the observed enhanced superconductivity in RFeAsO{1-x}Fx with a magnetic R ion.

We observe different spin state phases as function of temperature and electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectral range. There exists a fluctuating spin state phase with an unexpected wipeout of the low frequency phonon scattering intensity. Furthermore we observe one phase with reduced symmetry that is attributed to a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. Pronounced electron-phonon interaction manifests itself as a strong Fano-resonance of phonons related to {FeN6} and {FeN4O2} coordination octahedra. These chains promote a system of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg alternating exchange chains with pronounced spin frustration. The magnetic susceptibility and Raman scattering evidence a crossover at T* = 85 K with different slopes of the reciprocal susceptibility and a magnetic phase transition into a long-range-ordered state at Tc = 16 K. From Raman scattering data a strong mutual coupling between lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom is deduced. A comparison to model calculations and prior Raman scattering on other chain systems yield a plausible interpretation of the microscopic mechanism for the crossover behavior.

Raman scattering experiments on CdCr2S4 single crystals show pronounced anomalies in intensity and frequency of optical phonon modes with an onset temperature T*=130 K that coincides with the regime of giant magnetocapacitive effects. A loss of inversion symmetry and Cr off-centering are deduced from the observation of longitudinal optical and formerly infrared active modes for T<T_c=84 K. The intensity anomalies are attributed to the enhanced electronic polarizability of displacements that modulate the Cr-S distance and respective hybridization. Photo do** leads to an annihilation of the symmetry reduction. Our scenario of multiferroic effects is based on the near degeneracy of polar and nonpolar modes and the additional low energy scale due to hybridization.

Abstract:
We report on Raman scattering measurements of single crystalline La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x$=0, 0.06, 0.09 and 0.125), focusing on the high frequency regime. We observe multi-phonon scattering processes up to fourth-order which show distinct features: (i) anomalies in peak energy and its relative intensity and (ii) a pronounced temperature-, polarization-, and do**-dependence. We report a neutron and Raman scattering study of a single-crystal of La(2)CuO(4.05) prepared by high temperature electrochemical oxidation. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show the presence of two phases, corresponding to the two edges of the first miscibility gap, all the way up to 300 K. An additional oxygen redistribution, driven by electronic energies, is identified at 250 K in Raman scattering (RS) experiments by the simultaneous onset of two-phonon and two-magnon scattering, which are fingerprints of the insulating phase. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show directly an antiferromagnetic ordering below a Néel temperature of T_N =210K. The opening of the superconducting gap manifests itself as a redistribution of electronic Raman scattering below the superconducting transition temperature, T_c = 24K. A pronounced temperature-dependent suppression of the intensity of the (100) magnetic Bragg peak has been detected below T_c. We ascribe this phenomenon to a change of relative volume fraction of superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases with decreasing temperature caused by a form of a superconducting proximity effect.

Abstract:
The Raman-active phonons in perovskite-like LaMn1-xCoxO3 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 1.0) were studied by measuring Raman spectra at temperatures of 295 and 5 K. The changes in the spectra with Co do** are correlated with the decrease of orthorhombic distortions. Surprisingly more phonon lines than allowed for the rhombohedral LaCoO3 structure were observed in the spectra.

The NQR on Ba nuclei was studied in four samples of BaBiO3 prepared in different ways and, in addition, in BaPbO3. The integrated intensity of $^{137}$Ba resonance in ceramic sample BaBiO3 synthesized at 800 C is approximately two times larger than in ceramic samples and single crystal prepared at 930-1080 C. The decrease of the NQR signal can be attributed to the partial disordering of charge disproportionated Bi ions on the two inequivalent sites. The broadening of the resonance indicates that local distortions of crystal structure exist in both compounds. The point charge model was used to analyse the electric field gradient on the Ba sites

The processes of Coulomb gas ordering in 3D layered system are studied by means of Brownian dynamics approach. It is found that at different densities of the carriers the 3D lattice of charges as well as new specific structures are possible in the system. In particular, at some small density the particles inside the layers can associate into droplets that collectively repulse between neighbouring layers. These droplets possess local stripe structure which orders spontaneously along arbitrary chosen direction. At higher densities a specific ordering of the charges into the tetragonal-like or hexagonal-like structures is observed visually and described numerically. Specific ''pairing'' of the charges from different layers plays an essential role in formation of all above structures. It is essentially many-body effect in 3D system which can be a reason for unusual properties of layered crystals.

A strong Fano antiresonance for a Ni-O bond-stretching mode provides clear evidence for finite dynamical conductivity within the charge stripes.
