Negative modes and decay-rate transition
Abstract: We investigate a relationship between the number of the negative modes around periodic instanton solution and the type of the decay-rate transition. It is shown that for the case of first-order decay-rate transition the lowest positive mode at low energy periodic instanton becomes additional negative mode at high energy regime, while in the second-order case there is only one negative mode in th… ▽ More

A condition for first order phase transitions in quantum mechanical tunneling models
Abstract: A criterion is derived for the determination of parameter domains of first order phase transitions in quantum mechanical tunneling models. The criterion is tested by application to various models, in particular to some which have been used recently to explore spin tunneling in macroscopic particles. In each case agreement is found with previously heuristically determined domains.

Escape rate of a biaxial nanospin system in a magnetic field : first- and second-order transition between quantum and classical regimes
Abstract: We investigate the escape rate of the biaxial nanospin particle with a magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The model studied here is described by the Hamiltonian ${\cal H} = -AS_z^2 - BS_x^2 - HS_z, (A>B>0)$. By reducing this Hamiltonian to a particle one, we derive, for the first time, an effective particle potential for this model and find an analytical form of the phase boundary line… ▽ More

Effect of dissipation on the decay-rate phase transition
Abstract: A general condition for sharp transition of decay rate from quantum to thermal regimes is derived in dissipative tunneling models when position dependent mass is involved. It is shown that the effect of dissipation in general changes the order of the phase transition. Especially, for the models with constant mass the Ohmic dissipation enlarges the range of parameters for first-order phase transi… ▽ More

Critical value of symmetry breaking parameter in the phase transition of decay rate
Abstract: Phase transition of decay rate from quantum tunneling to thermal activity regimes is investigated in (3+1)-dimensional field theories with symmetry breaking term $fφ$. By applying the two independent criteria for the sharp first-order transition to the same model, the upper and lower bounds of critical value of the symmetry breaking parameter are obtained. Double-Well Potential : The WKB Approximation with Phase Loss and Anharmonicity Effect
Abstract: We derive a general WKB energy splitting formula in a double-well potential by incorporating both phase loss and anharmonicity effect in the usual WKB approximation. A bare application of the phase loss approach to the usual WKB method gives better results only for large separation between two potential minima. In the range of substantial tunneling, however, the phase loss approach with anharmon… ▽ More

Escape rate of the nanospin system in a magnetic field: the first-order phase transition within quantum regime
Abstract: We have investigated the escape rate of the nanospin particle with a magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The model studied here is described by the Hamiltonian $\hat{\cal H} = K_1 \hat{S}_z^2 + K_2 \hat{S}_y^2 + gμ_b H \hat{S}_x $, $(K_1 > K_2 > 0)$ from which the escape rate is calculated within the semiclassical approximation. Quantum Tunneling and Phase Transitions in Spin Systems with an Applied Magnetic Field
Abstract: Transitions from classical to quantum behaviour in a spin system with two degenerate ground states separated by twin energy barriers which are asymmetric due to an applied magnetic field are investigated. Periodic Instantons and Quantum-Classical Transitions in Spin Systems
Abstract: Some models allowing explicit calculation of periodic instantons and evaluation of their action are studied with regard to transitions from classical to quantum behaviour as the temperature is lowered and tunneling sets in. All the cusps for the unpolarized spin-1/2 as well as spinless cases disappear in the $ω\to 0$ limit, where $ω$ is a frequency of harmonic oscillator which is introduced as a regularization method. Comment on "Background thermal contributions in testing the Unruh effect"
Abstract: Costa and Matsas (gr-qc/9412030) claimed in their recent paper that a thermal bath does not affect substantially the transition probability for fast moving inertial Unruh detector. It is shown that their claim holds only for small $βΔE$. We show that, for large enough $βΔE$, the transition probability is not monotonically decreasing function of the detector's speed contrary to their claim.

Abstract: Lavelle-McMullan symmetry of QED is examined at classical and quantum levels. It is shown that Lavelle-McMullan symmetry does not give any new non-trivial information in QED by examining the Ward-Takahashi identities. Being inspired by the examination of Ward-Takahashi identity, we construct the generalized non-local and non-covariant symmetries of QED.
