We investigate unification prospects of two heavy scalar triplet extension of the standard model where, in the absence of any right-handed neutrino (RHN), type-II seesaw accounts for current oscillation data with hierarchical neutrino masses consistent with cosmological bounds and the lighter triplet decay explains baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis. We note that the absence of RHNs in the fundamental fermion representations of SU(5) delineates its outstanding position compared to SO(10) (or $E_6$). In addition, SU(5) needs smaller scalar representations ${15}_{H1}\oplus {15}_{H2}$ compared to much larger representations ${126}_{H1}\oplus {126}_{H2} \subset $ SO(10) (or ${351}^{\prime}_{H1}\oplus {351}^{\prime}_{H2} \subset E_6$). We show how precision gauge coupling unification is achieved through SU(5) with the predictions of different sets of two heavy triplet masses which, besides being compatible with type-II seesaw, are also consistent with unflavoured or $τ-$ flavoured leptogenesis. In addition to an intermediate mass colour octet fermion, completion of precision gauge coupling unification is found to require essentially the presence of the well known weak triplet fermion $Σ(3,0,1)$ in its mass range $M_Σ\simeq {\cal O}(500-3000)$ GeV out of which the dominant dark matter (DM) resonance mass $M_Σ\ge 2.4$ TeV is known to account for the observed cosmological relic density. The deficiency in relic density for lighter $Σ$ solutions is compensated by an additional scalar singlet DM. A GUT ansatz is noted to ensure vacuum stability of the SM scalar potential for all types of unification solutions realised in this work. We discuss proton lifetime estimations for $p\to e^+π^0$ compatible with the present Hyper-Kamiokande bound as a function of an unknown mixing parameter in the model.

We notice from experimental data that yield ratios between non-strange hadrons, like p/$π$ or hadrons of same strange content, like $Λ$/K$_s^0$, show similar enhancement. We have studied this behavior within the ambit of a parton model (EPOS3) and A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model in pp and p-Pb collisions at LHC energies. We investigate model predictions of yields and yield ratios of different identified hadron productions as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and compare them with published ALICE results. In a novel standard model extension it has been suggested that, even in the absence of right-handed neutrinos and type-I seesaw, purely triplet leptogenesis leading to baryon asymmetry of the universe can be realised by two heavy Higgs triplets which also provide type-II seesaw ansatz for neutrino masses. In this work we discuss this model for hierarchical neutrino masses in concordance with recently determined cosmologocal bounds and oscillation data including $θ_{23}$ in the second octant and large Dirac CP phases. We also address the issues on dark matter and vacuum stability of the scalar potential in a minimal extension of this model. We find that for both normal and inverted orderings the model fits the oscillation data with the sum of the three neutrino masses consistent with cosmological bounds determined from Planck satellite data. In addition using this model ansatz for CP-asymmetry and solutions of Boltzmann equations, we also show how successful prediction of baryon asymmetry emerges in the cases of both unflavoured and two-flavoured leptogeneses. With additional $Z_2$ discrete symmetry, a minimal extension of this model is shown to be capable of predicting a scalar singlet WIMP dark matter in agreement with direct and indirect observations. Whereas in the original model, the renormalization group running of the scalar potential renders it negatve leading to vacuum instability, the presence of the dark matter in the minimally extended model ensures stability. Although the combined constraints due to relic density and direct detection cross section allow this scalar singlet dark matter mass to be $m_ξ=750$ GeV, the additional vacuum stability constraint pushes this limiting value to $m_ξ=1.3$ TeV which is verifiable by ongoing experiments. We also dicuss constraint on the model parameters for the radiative stability of the standard Higgs mass.

Supersymmetric (SUSY) grand unified theories (GUTs) appear to be best motivated for understanding strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions of nature. We briefly review emergence of new formulas for running fermion masses valid in direct breaking of GUTs. High scale mixing unification of quark and neutrino mixings and existence of theorems on vanishing theoretical uncertainties in GUT predictions are discussed. D-Parity properties of SO(10) representations leading to large number of intermediate breaking models are pointed out. Unification predictions of SUSY SO(10) in the light of neutrino mass, lepton flavor violation, baryogenesis via leptogenesis within gravitino constraint, and proton decay are noted. We further discuss realisation of flavour unification and possibility of fitting all fermion masses through R-Parity and D-Parity conserving left-right symmetric intermediate breaking in SUSY SO(10)$\times S_4$. In the absence of SUSY two interesting possibilities of minimal grand desert modifications with only one intermediate mass scalar in each case and their applications to dark matter decay through type-I seesaw are briefly noted. Heavy scalar triplet decay leptogenesis through new ansatz for type-II seesaw dominance in non-SUSY SO(10), emergence of new CP asymmetry formulas and model capabilities to explain WIMP dark matter, vacuum stability of the scalar potential and experimentally observed limit on proton lifetime are briefly summarized.

The mass dependence plays a significant role in the yield enhancement or suppression of hadrons in pp and p-Pb collisions at the LHC energies. This has been observed by parameterizing the variation of yield ratios between any two hadrons with event charged-particle multiplicity using a single empirical function. We notice that this variation is independent of all quantum numbers and solely depends on masses of hadrons and masses of their valence quarks. The function shows that the amount of quark deconfinement increases with event multiplicity, and the quark coalescence favours more the production of heavier hadrons compared to lighter ones.

We implement type-II seesaw dominance for neutrino mass and baryogenesis through heavy scalar triplet leptogenesis in a class of minimal non-supersymmetric SO(10) models where matter parity as stabilising discrete symmetry as well as WIMP dark matter (DM) candidates are intrinsic predictions of the GUT symmetry. We also find modifications of relevant CP-asymmetry formulas in such minimal models. Baryon asymmetry of the universe as solutions of Boltzmann equations is further shown to be realized for both normal and inverted mass orderings in concordance with cosmological bound and best fit values of the neutrino oscillation data including $θ_{23}$ in the second octant and large values of leptonic Dirac CP-phases. Type-II seesaw dominance is at first successfully implemented in two cases of spontaneous SO(10) breakings through SU(5) route where the presence of only one non-standard Higgs scalar of intermediate mass $\sim 10^9-10^{10}$ GeV achieves unification. Lower values of the SU(5) unification scales $\sim 10^{15}$ GeV are predicted to bring proton lifetimes to the accessible ranges of Super-Kamiokande and Hyper-Kamiokande experiments. Our prediction of WIMP DM relic density in each model is due to a $\sim$ TeV mass matter-parity odd real scalar singlet ($\subset {16}_H \subset$ SO(10)) verifiable by LUX and XENON1T experiments. This DM is also noted to resolve the vacuum stability issue of the standard scalar potential. When applied to the unification framework of M. Frigerio and T. Hambye, in addition to the minimal fermionic triplet DM solution of $2.7$ TeV mass, this procedure of type-II seesaw dominance and triplet leptogenesis is also found to make an alternative prediction of triplet fermion plus real scalar singlet DM at the TeV scale.

Nonsupersymmetric minimal SU(5) with Higgs representations ${24}_H$ and $5_H$ and standard fermions in ${\bar 5}_F\oplus {10}_F$ is well known for its failure in unification of gauge couplings and lack of predicting neutrino masses. Like standard model, it is also affected by the instability of the Higgs scalar potential. We note that extending the Higgs sector by ${75}_H$ and ${15}_H$ not only leads to the popular type-II seesaw ansatz for neutrino masses with a lower bound on the triplet mass $M_Δ > 2\times 10^9$ GeV, but also achieves precision unification of gauge couplings without proliferation of non-standard light Higgs scalars or fermions near the TeV scale. Consistent with recent LUX-2016 lower bound, the model easily accommodates a singlet scalar WIMP dark matter near the TeV scale which resolves the vacuum stability issue even after inclusion of heavy triplet threshold effect. We estimate proton lifetime predictions for $p\to e^+π^0$ including uncertainties due to input parameters and threshold effects due to superheavy Higgs scalars and superheavy $X^{\pm 4/3},Y^{\pm 1/3}$ gauge bosons. The predicted lifetime is noted to be verifiable at Super Kamiokande and Hyper Kamiokande experiments.

In direct breaking of non-supersymmetric SO(10) to the standard model, we investigate the possibility that dark matter (DM) decaying through its mixing with right-handed neutrino (RH$ν$) produces high energy IceCube neutrinos having type-I seesaw masses. Instead of one universal mixing and one common heavy RH$ν$ mass proposed in a recent standard model extension, we find that underlying quark-lepton symmetry resulting in naturally hierarchical RH$ν$ masses predict a separate mixing with each of them. We determine these mixings from the seesaw prediction of the DM decay rates into the light neutrino flavors. We further show that these mixings originate from Planck-scale assisted spontaneously broken matter parity needed to resolve the associated cosmological domain wall problem. This leads to the prediction of a new LHC accessible matter-parity odd Higgs scalar which also completes vacuum stability in the Higgs potential for its mass $M_{χ_S}\simeq 178$ GeV. Two separate minimal SO(10) models are further noted to predict such dark matter dynamics where a single scalar submultiplet from ${126}^{\dagger}_H$ or ${210}_H$ of intermediate mass achieves precision gauge coupling unification. Despite the presence of two large Higgs representations and the fermionic dark matter host, ${45}_F$, experimentally accessible proton lifetimes are also predicted with reduced uncertainties.

We discuss gauge coupling unification of the SM descending directly from SO(10) while providing solutions to the three outstanding problems: neutrino masses, dark matter, and the baryon asymmetry of the universe. Conservation of matter parity as gauged discrete symmetry in the model calls for high-scale spontaneous symmetry breaking through ${126}_H$ Higgs representation. This naturally leads to the hybrid seesaw formula for neutrino masses mediated by heavy scalar triplet and right-handed neutrinos. The seesaw formula predicts two distinct patterns of RH$ν$ masses, one hierarchical and another not so hierarchical (or compact) when fitted with the neutrino oscillation data. Predictions of the baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis are investigated through the decays of both the patterns of RH$ν$ masses. A complete flavor analysis has been carried out to compute CP-asymmetries and solutions to Boltzmann equations have been utilized to predict the baryon asymmetry. The additional contribution to vertex correction mediated by the heavy left-handed triplet scalar is noted to contribute as dominantly as other Feynman diagrams. We have found successful predictions of the baryon asymmetry for both the patterns of RH$ν$ masses. The triplet fermionic dark matter at the TeV scale carrying even matter parity is naturally embedded into the non-standard fermionic representation ${45}_F$ of SO(10). In addition to the triplet scalar and the triplet fermion, the model needs a nonstandard color octet fermion of mass $\sim 10^7$ GeV to achieve precision gauge coupling unification. Threshold corrections due to superheavy components of ${126}_H$ and other representations are estimated and found to be substantial. It is noted that the proton life time predicted by the model is accessible to the ongoing and planned experiments over a wide range of parameter space.

In a recent review Mohapatra has discussed how type-I seesaw mechanism suppressed by fine tuning of Yukawa couplings, or specific textures of associated fermion mass matrices, can form the basis of neutrino masses in TeV scale $W_R$ boson models. In this paper we review recent works in another class of theories where the added presence of fermion singlets manifesting as sterile neutrinos render the type-I seesaw contribution vanishing but extended seesaw dominant where the light neutrino mass formula is same as the classic inverse seesaw but all massive neutrinos are Majorana fermions. We also show domunance of linear seesaw, or double seesaw, or type-II seesaw in due to cancellation of type-I seesaw. Embeddings of this mechnism in supersymmetric as well as non-supersymmetric SO(10) with low or intermediate masses of $W_R$ or $Z_R$ bosons are discussed. We also discuss how this cancellation criteria has led to a new mechanism of type-II seesaw dominance which permits $U(1)_{B-L}$ breaking scale much smaller than the left-handed triplet mass. Out of a number of new observable predictions, the most visible ones are the dominant contribution to LFV decays and neutrinoless double beta decay mediated by light sterile neutrinos in the $W_L-W_L$ channel. These seesaw dominance mechanisms are applicable in the extensions of the SM and high, intermediate, or low scale left-right gauge theories with or without their SO(10) origin. Other recent works on the applications of this mechanism covering dark matter and leptogenesis are noted..

In a class of Type-II seesaw dominated $SO(10)$ models proposed recently with heavy neutrinos, extra $Z'$ boson, and resonant leptogenesis, at first we show that the lightest first generation sterile neutrino that mediates dominant contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay also generates the displaced vertex leading to verifiable like-sign di-electron as well as di-muon production events outside the LHC detectors having suppressed standard model back-ground and missing energy. Resonant leptogenesis in this case is implemented by a pair of quasi-degenerate sterile neutrinos of the second and the third generations having masses of ${\cal O}(500)$ GeV. Then we predict a new alternative scenario where the models allow the second generation sterile neutrino mass to be ${\cal O}(10)$ GeV capable of mediating the dominant double beta decay as well as the displaced vertices for significantly improved number of like-sign dilepton events in different channels. Resonant leptogenesis in this alternative scenario is mediated by a pair of heavy quasi-degenerate sterile neutrino masses of the first and the third generations. In addition to QD type light neutrino mass hierarchy, we also show how these results are derived for the NH case. We also discuss $Z'$ production cross sections at $\sqrt s =14 $ TeV run-II of LHC and also at ILC. We show that inclusion of Planck-scale induced effects due to ${\rm dim.}5$ operator not only does away with all the additional intermediate symmetries, but also it predicts the minimal set of light Higgs scalars tailored after neutrino masses and dilepton, or trilepton signals. The heavy-light neutrino mixings are predicted from charged fermion mass fits in $SO(10)$ and LFV constraints which lead to new predictions for dilepton or trilepton production signals. Including fine-structure constant matching and two-loop, and threshold effects predicts $M_{W_R}= g_{2R}\times 10^{4.3\pm 1.5 \pm 0.2}$ GeV and proton lifetime $τ_p=10^{36.15\pm 5.8\pm 0.2}$ yrs with $W_R$ gauge boson coupling $g_{2R}=0.56-0.57$. Predictions on lepton flavour and lepton number violations are accessible to ongoing experiments. Conventionally for observable $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation through Pati-Salam intermediate gauge symmetry in $SO(10)$, the canonical seesaw mechanism is also constrained by $M_R \sim M_C \le 10^6$ GeV which yields light neutrino masses much larger than the neutrino oscillation data. Recently, this difficulty has been evaded via inverse seesaw mechanism, but with proton lifetime far beyond the experimentally accessible limits. In the present work, adopting the view that we may have only a TeV scale $Z^{\prime}$ gauge boson, we show how a class of non-SUSY $SO(10)$ models allow experimentally verifiable proton lifetime and the new contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay in the $W_L-W_L$ channel, lepton flavor violating branching ratios, observable $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation, and lepto-quark gauge boson mediated rare kaon decays. The occurrence of Pati-Salam gauge symmetry with unbroken D-parity and two gauge couplings at the highest intermediate scale guarantees precision unification in such models. This symmetry also ensures vanishing GUT threshold uncertainy on $\sin^2θ_W$ or on the highest intermediate scale. Although the proton lifetime prediction is brought closer to the ongoing search limits with GUT threshold effects in the minimal model, no such effects are needed in a non-minimal model. We derive a new analytic expression for the $0νββ$ decay half-life and show how the existing experimental limits impose the lower bound on the lightest of the three heavy sterile neutrino masses, $M_{S_1}\ge 14\pm 4$ GeV. We also derive a new lower bound on the lepto-quark gauge boson mass mediating rare kaon decay, $M_{\rm lepto} \ge (1.53{\pm 0.06})\times 10^6$ GeV. Dominance of type-II seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses has attracted considerable attention because of a number of advantages. We show a novel approach to achieve Type-II seesaw dominance in non-supersymmetric $SO(10)$ grand unification where a low mass $Z^{\prime}$ boson and specific patterns of right-handed neutrino masses are predicted within the accessible energy range of the Large Hadron Collider. In spite of the high value of the seesaw scale, $M_{Δ_L} \simeq 10^8-10^9$ GeV, the model predicts new dominant contributions to neutrino-less double beta decay in the $W_L-W_L$ channel close to the current experimental limits via exchanges of heavier singlet fermions used as essential ingredients of this model even when the light active neutrino masses are normally hierarchical or invertedly hierarchical. We obtain upper bounds on the lightest sterile neutrino mass $m_s\lesssim 3.0$ GeV, $2.0$ GeV, and $0.7$ GeV for normally hierarchical, invertedly hierarchical, and quasi-degenerate patterns of light neutrino masses, respectively. The underlying non-unitarity effects lead to lepton flavor violating decay branching ratios within the reach of ongoing or planned experiments and the leptonic CP-violation parameter nearly two orders larger than the quark sector. Some of the predicted values on proton lifetime for $p\to e^+π^0$ are found to be within the currently accessible search limits. Other aspects of model applications including leptogenesis etc. are briefly indicated.

In this work we consider a class of LR models with TeV scale $W_R, Z_R$ bosons but having parity restoration at high scales where they originate from well known Pati-Salam symmetry or $SO(10)$ grand unified theory minimally extended to accommodate inverse seesaw frame work for neutrino masses. Most dominant new contribution to neutrinoless double beta decay is noted to occur via $W_L^{-}W_L^{-}$ mediation involving lighter sterile neutrino exchanges. The next dominant contribution is found to be through $W_L^{-}W_R^{-}$ mediation involving both light and heavy right-handed neutrino or sterile neutrino exchanges. The quark-lepton symmetric origin of the computed value of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is also found to play a crucial role in determining these and other results on lepton flavor violating branching ratios for $τ\rightarrow e + γ$, $τ\rightarrow μ+ γ$, and $μ\rightarrow e + γ$ accessible to ongoing search experiments. The underlying non-unitarity matrix is found to manifest in substantial CP-violating effects even when the leptonic Dirac phase $δ_{\rm CP} \simeq 0, π, 2 π$. Finally we explore a possible origin of the model in non-supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theory where, in addition to low mass $W_R^\pm$ and $Z_R$ bosons accessible to Large Hadron Collider, the model is found to predict observable neutron-antineutron oscillation and lepto-quark gauge boson mediated rare kaon decay with $\mbox{Br} \left(K_{\rm L} \rightarrow μ\, \bar{e}\right) \simeq \left(10^{-9}- 10^{-11} \right)$.

When the Dirac neutrino mass matrix in the inverse seesaw formula is similar to the up-quark mass matrix, characteristic of high scale quark-lepton symmetric origin, the predicted branching ratios for lepton flavor violating decays are also found to be closer to the accessible range of ongoing experiments.

In TeV scale left-right symmetric models, new dominant predictions to neutrinoless double beta decay and light neutrino masses are in mutual contradiction because of large contribution to the latter through popular seesaw mechanisms. We show that in a class of left-right models with high-scale parity restoration, these results coexist without any contravention with neutrino oscillation data and the relevant formula for light neutrino masses is obtained via gauged inverse seesaw mechanism. The most dominant contribution to the double beta decay is shown to be via $W^-_L- W^-_R$ mediation involving both light and heavy neutrino exchanges, and the model predictions are found to discriminate whether the Dirac neutrino mass is of quark-lepton symmetric origin or without it. We also discuss associated lepton flavor violating decays.

Recently realization of TeV scale inverse seesaw mechanism in supersymmetric SO(10) framework has led to a number of experimentally verifiable predictions including low-mass W_R and Z' gauge bosons and nonunitarity effects. Using nonsupersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theory, we show how a TeV scale inverse seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses is implemented with a low-mass Z' boson accessible to Large Hadron Collider. We derive renormalization group equations for fermion masses and mixings in the presence of the intermediate symmetries of the model and extract the Dirac neutrino mass matrix at the TeV scale from successful GUT-scale parameterization of fermion masses. We estimate leptonic nonunitarity effects measurable at neutrino factories and lepton flavor violating decays expected to be probed in near future. While our prediction on the nonunitarity matrix element $η_{μτ}$ for degenerate right-handed neutrinos is similar to the supersymmetric SO(10) case, we find new predictions with significantly enhanced value of its phase $δ_{μτ}\simeq 10^{-4}-10^{-2}$ when partial degeneracy among these neutrino masses is adequately taken into account by a constraint relation that emerges naturally in this approach. Other predictions on branching ratios and CP-Violating parameters are discussed. An important distinguishing characteristic as another test of the minimal model is that the threshold corrected two-loop prediction of the proton lifetime with maximum value (τ_p)_{max}\simeq 10^{35} yrs. is accessible to ongoing search experiments for the decay $p\to e^+π^0$ in the near future. Simple model extensions with longer proton lifetime predictions are also discussed.

Recently type II seesaw dominance in a supersymmetric SO(10) framework has been found useful in explaining large solar and atmospheric mixing angles as well as larger values of $theta_{13}$ while unifying quark and lepton masses. An important question in these models is whether there exists consistency between coupling unification and type II seesaw dominance. Scenarios where this consistency can be demonstrated have been given in a SUSY framework. In this paper we give examples where type II dominance occurs in SO(10) models without supersymmetry but with additional TeV scale particles and also in models with split-supersummetry. Grand unification is realized in a two-step process via breaking of SO(10) to SU(5) and then to a TeV scale standard model supplemented by extra fields and an SU(5) Higgs multiplet ${15}_H$ at a scale about $10^{12}$ GeV to give type-II seesaw. The predictions for proton lifetime in these models are in the range $τ_p^0 = 2\times 10^{35}$ yrs. to $τ_p^0 = 6\times 10^{35}$ yrs.. A number of recent numerical fits to GUT-scale fermion masses can be accommodated within this model.

In the absence of supersymmetry, we extend a class of SO(10) models to predict well known cold dark matter candidates while achieving precision unification with experimentally testable proton lifetime. The most important prediction is a new radiative seesaw formula of Ma type accessible to accelerator tests while the essential small value of its quartic coupling also emerges naturally. This dominates over the high-scale seesaw contributions making a major impact on neutrino physics and dark matter, opening up high prospects as a theory of fermion masses.

For gauge coupling unification in the single-step breaking case, we show that a color-octet fermion and a hyperchargeless weak-triplet fermionic dark matter are the missing particles needed to complete its MSSM-equivalent degrees of freedom. When these are included the model automatically predicts the nonsupersymmetric grand unification with a scale identical to the minimal supersymmetric standard model/grand unified theory scale. We also find a two-step breaking model with Pati-Salam intermediate symmetry where the dark matter and a low-mass color-octet scalar or the fermion are signaled by grand unification. The proton-lifetime predictions are found to be accessible to ongoing or planned searches in a number of models. We discuss grand unified origin of the light fermionic triplet dark matter, the color-octet fermion, and their phenomenology.

We explore low-scale leptogenesis in a class of supersymmetric SO(10) models using extra singlet neutrinos and the Higgs representations {126}_H\oplus {\ovl{126}}_H as well as {16}_H \oplus {\bar {16}}_H. A singlet neutrino, which can be as light as 10^5-10^6 GeV, decays through its small mixings with right-handed neutrinos creating a lepton asymmetry which is shown to be flavor dependent. While the doublet vacuum expectation value in {\ovl{16}}_H triggers the generation of desired mixings, it also induces a large RH triplet vev that breaks the LR intermediate gauge symmetry and gives large RH neutrino masses. Manifest unification of gauge couplings and generation of heavy RH neutrino masses are achieved by renormalizable interactions. The canonical (Type-I) see-saw contributions to the light neutrino mass matrix cancel out while the Type-II see-saw contribution is negligible. Determining the parameters of the dominant inverse see-saw formula using the underlying quark-lepton symmetry and neutrino oscillation data, we show how leptogenesis under the gravitino constraint is successfully implemented. New formulas for the decay rate and the asymmetry parameter are derived leading to baryon asymmetry within the observed range. The model is found to work for hierarchical as well as inverted hierarchical light neutrino masses. Testable predictions of the model are RH doubly charged Higgs bosons which may be leptophilic and accessible to the Tevatron, LHC or a linear collider. In a model-independent manner, the Drell-Yan pair production cross section is shown to be bounded between 59%-79% of their left-handed counterparts with same mass. In contrast to single-step breaking SUSY GUTs, which predict a long proton lifetime for p\to e^+π^0, here this lifetime is substantially reduced, bringing it within one order of the current experimental limit.

If left-right gauge theory occurs as an intermediate symmetry in a GUT then, apart from other advantages, it is possible to obtain the see-saw scale necessary to understand small neutrino masses with Majorana coupling of order unity. Barring threshold or non-renormalizable gravitational effects, or assumed presence of additional light scalar particles of unprescribed origin, all other attempts to achieve manifest one-loop gauge coupling unification in SUSY SO(10) with left-right intermediate symmetry have not been successful so far. Attributing this failure to lack of flavor symmetry in the GUT, we show how the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $SO(10)\times S_4$ leads to such intermediate scale extending over a wide range, $M_R \simeq 5\times 10^{9}$ GeV to $10^{15}$ GeV. All the charged fermion masses are fitted at the see-saw scale, $M_N\simeq M_R \simeq 4 \times 10^{13}$ GeV which is obtained with Majorana coupling $f_0 \simeq 1$. Using a constrained parametrization in which CP-violation originates only from quark sector, besides other predictions made in the neutrino sector, the reactor mixing angle is found to be $θ_{13} \simeq 3^{\circ} - 5^{\circ}$ which is in the range accessible to ongoing and planned experiments. The leptonic Dirac phase turns out to be $δ\sim 2.9- 3.1$ radians with Jarlskog invariant $J \sim 2.95 \times 10^{-5} - 10^{-3}$.

A low intermediate scale within minimal supersymmetric SO(10) GUTs is a desirable feature to accommodate leptogenesis. We explore this possibility in models where the intermediate gauge symmetry breaks spontaneously by (a) doublet Higgs scalars and also (b) by triplets. In both scenarios gauge coupling unification requires the scale of left-right symmetry breaking ($M_R$) to be close to the unification scale. This will entail unnaturally small neutrino Yukawa couplings to avoid the gravitino problem and allow successful leptogenesis. We point out that any one of three options -- threshold corrections due to the mass spectrum near the unification scale, gravity induced non-renormalizable operators near the Planck scale, or presence of additional light Higgs multiplets -- can permit unification along with much lower values of $M_R$ as required for leptogenesis. In the triplet model, independent of these corrections, we find a lower bound on the intermediate scale,
$M_R > 10^9$ GeV, arising from the requirement that the theory must remain perturbative at least upto the GUT scale. We show that in the doublet model $M_R$ can even be in the TeV region which, apart from permitting resonant leptogenesis, can be tested at LHC and ILC.

The high scale mixing unification hypothesis recently proposed by three of us (R. N. M., M. K. P. and G. R.) states that if at the seesaw scale, the quark and lepton mixing matrices are equal then for quasi-degenerate neutrinos, radiative corrections can lead to large solar and atmospheric mixings and small reactor angle at the weak scale in agreement with data. Evidence for quasi-degenerate neutrinos could, within this framework, be interpreted as a sign of quark-lepton unification at high scale. In the current work, we extend this model to show that the hypothesis works quite successfully in the presence of CP violating phases (which were set to zero in the first paper). In the case where the PMNS matrix is identical to the CKM matrix at the seesaw scale, with a Dirac phase but no Majorana phase, the low energy Dirac phase is predicted to be ($\simeq 0.3^{\circ}$) and leptonic CP-violation parameter $J_{CP} \simeq (4 - 8)\times 10^{-5}$ and $θ_{13} = 3.5^{\circ}$. If on the other hand, the PMNS matrix is assumed to also have Majorana phases initially, the resulting theory damps radiative magnification phenomenon for a large range of parameters but nevertheless has enough parameter space to give the two necessary large neutrino mixing angles. In this case, one has $θ_{13} = 3.5^{\circ} - 10^{\circ}$ and $|J_{CP}|$ as large as $0.02-0.04$ which are accessible to long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

It is well known that in single step breaking of R-parity conserving SUSY SO(10) that needs the Higgs representations $126+\bar 126$ the GUT-gauge coupling violates the perturbative constraint at mass scales few times larger than the GUT scale. Therefore, if the SO(10) gauge coupling is to remain perturbative up the Planck scale(=2x10^{18} GeV), the scale $M_U$ of GUT symmetry breaking is to be bounded from below. The bound depends upon specific Higgs representations used for SO(10) symmetry breaking but, as we find, can not be lower than $1.5x10^{17}$ GeV. In order to obtain such high unification scale we propose a two-step SO(10) breaking through $SU(2)_LXSU(2)_RXU(1)_{B-L}XSU(3)_C(g_{2L} \neq g_{2R})$ intermediate gauge symmetry. We estimate potential threshold and gravitational corrections to the running of gauge couplings and show that they can make the picture of perturbative GUT- gauge coupling running consistent at least up to the Planck scale. We also show that when $SO(10) \to G_{2213}$ by $210 + 54$, gravitational corrections alone with negligible threshold effects may guarantee such perturbative gauge coupling. The lifetime of the proton is found to increase by nearly 6 orders over the current experimental limit for $p \to e^+π^0$. For the proton decay mediated by dim.5 operator a wide range of lifetimes is possible extending from the current experimental limit up to values 2-3 orders longer.

Radiative corrections to neutrino mixings in seesaw models depend on the nature of new physics between the weak and the GUT-seesaw scales and can be taken into account using the renormalization group equations. This new physics effect becomes particularly important for models with quasi-degenerate neutrino masses where small neutrino mixings at the seesaw scale can get magnified by radiative renormalization effects alone to match observations. This mechanism of radiative magnification which provides a simple understanding of why lepton mixings are so different from quark mixings was demonstrated by us for the standard supersymmetry scenario where the particle spectrum becomes supersymmetric above the weak scale. In this paper, we examine this phenomenon in split supersymmetry scenarios and find that the mechanism works also for this scenario provided the SUSY scale is at least 2-3 orders below the GUT-seesaw scale and one has larger values of ${\tanβ}$.

Possibilities of low-mass right-handed gauge bosons corresponding to $M_I\simeq 1-10$ TeV consistent with the CERN-LEP data are pointed out in a number of models when threshold effects are included using effective mass parameters.

Abstract:
The renormalization group evolution equation for two neutrino mixing is known to exhibit nontrivial fixed point structure corresponding to maximal mixing at the weak scale. The presence of the fixed point provides a natural explanation of the observed maximal mixing of $ν_μ-ν_τ$ if the $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ are assumed to be quasi-degenerate at the seesaw scale without constraining on the mixing angle…

The renormalization group evolution equation for two neutrino mixing is known to exhibit nontrivial fixed point structure corresponding to maximal mixing at the weak scale. The presence of the fixed point provides a natural explanation of the observed maximal mixing of $ν_μ-ν_τ$ if the $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ are assumed to be quasi-degenerate at the seesaw scale without constraining on the mixing angles at that scale. In particular, it allows them to be similar to the quark mixings as in generic grand unified theories. We discuss implementation of this program in the case of MSSM and find that the predicted mixing remains stable and close to its maximal value, for all energies below the $O$(TeV) SUSY scale. We also discuss how a particular realization of this idea can be tested in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Including contributions of scale-dependent vacuum expectation values, we derive new analytic formulas and obtain substantially different numerical predictions for the running masses of quarks and charged-leptons at higher scales in the SM, 2HDM and MSSM. These formulas exhibit significantly different behaviours with respect to their dependence on gauge and Yukawa couplings than those derived earlier. At one-loop level the masses of the first two generations are found to be independent of Yukawa couplings of the third generation in all the three effective theories in the small mixing limit. Analytic formulas are also obtained for running $\tanβ(μ)$ in 2HDM and MSSM. Other numerical analyses include study of the third generation masses at high scales as functions of low-energy values of $\tanβ$ and SUSY scale $M_S=M_Z-10^4$ GeV.

We show that the neutrino mixing pattern with the large mixing required for the atmospheric neutrino problem and the small mixing angle MSW solution for the solar neutrino problem can be naturally generated through radiative magnification, even though all the mixing angles at the seesaw scale may be small. This can account for the neutrino anomalies as well as the CHOOZ constraints in the context of quark-lepton unified theories, where the quark and lepton mixing angles are expected to be similar in magnitude at the high scale. We also indicate the 4$ν$ mixing scenarios for which this mechanism of radiative magnification can provide a natural explanation.

In the context of a viable, supersymmetric, preon model,it has been shown by Babu and Pati that the unity of forces can well occur at the level of preons near the Planck scale. This preonic approach to unification is explored further in this note with the inclusion of threshold effects which arise due to spreading of masses near the scale of suppersymmetry ($M_S=1$ TeV) and the metacolor scale ($Λ_M=10^11$ GeV).These effects, which were ignored in the earlier work, are found to have marked consequences on the running and unification of relevant couplings leading to new possibilities for flavor-color as well as metacolor gauge symmetries. In particular, allowing for seemingly reasonable threshold effects,it is found that the metacolor gauge symmetry,$G_M$ is either $SU(6)_M$ or $SU(4)_M$ (rather than $SU(5)_M$) and the corresponding flavor-color gauge symmetry is either $SU(2)_LXU(1)_RXSU(4)_C$ (for $G_M=SU(6)_M$) or even just the standard model symmetry $SU(2)_LXU(1)_YXSU(3)_C$ (for $G_M=SU(6)_M or SU(4)_M$).
Prospects of other preonic gauge symmetries are also investigated.

Abstract:
We identify several mass patterns, within the framework of N=1 SUGRA with nonuniversal soft breaking masses for the sfermions, which may significantly alter SUSY signals and the current squark-gluino mass limits from the Tevatron. These effects are illustrated in a SO(10) SUSY GUT with an intermediate mass scale, but the conclusions are also valid in SUSY SO(10) models with grand deserts.

We compute the threshold uncertainties due to unknown masses of the Higgs bosons on the predictions for the intermediate and unification scales, $M_I$ and $M_U$ respectively in SO(10) models. We focus on models with separate breaking scales for Parity and $SU(2)_R$ symmetries since they provide a natural realization of the see-saw mechanism for neutrino masses. For the two step symmetry breaking chains ,where left-right symmetric gauge groups appear at the intermediate scale, we find that parity invariance of the theory at the unification scale drastically reduces the GUT threshold effects in some cases. Including the effects of the intermediate scale thresholds ,we compute the uncertainty in the above mass scales and study their implications for proton lifetime and neutrino masses. An important outcome of our analysis is that if the currently favored nonadiabatic MSW solution to the solar neutrino puzzle is accepted , it will rule out the $SU(2)_LXSU(2)_RXU(1)_{B-L}X SU(3)_c$ as an intermediate symmetry for SO(10) breaking whereas the intermediate symmetry $SU(2)_LXSU(2)_RXSU(4)_c$, is quite consistent with it.
