We study an effective spin model derived perturbatively from random transverse-field Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice. The model consists of spin-configurations on the pyrochlore lattice, restricted to the spin-ice subspace, with spins interacting with random Ising exchange couplings as well as ring exchanges along the hexagons of the lattice. This model is studied by exact diagonalization upto N=64 site systems. We calculate spin-glass correlation functions and local entanglement entropy $S_T$ between spins in a single tetrahedron and the rest of the system. We find that the model undergoes two phase transitions. At weak randomness the model is in a quantum spin-ice phase where $S_T=\ln{6}$. Increasing randomness first leads to a frozen phase, with long-range spin-glass order and $S_T=\ln{2}$ corresponding to the Cat states associated with Ising order. Further increase in randomness leads to a random resonating-hexagon phase with a frozen backbone of spins and a broad distribution of entanglement entropies. The implications of these studies for non-Kramers rare-earth pyrochlores are discussed.

Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ presents an opportunity for exploring low-dimensional magnetism on a square lattice of $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions. We employ ab initio multi-reference configuration interaction calculations to unravel the Cu$^{2+}$ electronic structure and to evaluate exchange interactions in Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$. The latter results are validated by inelastic neutron scattering using linear spin-wave theory and series-expansion corrections for quantum effects to extract true coupling parameters. Using this methodology, which is quite general, we demonstrate that Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ is an almost realization of a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet but with relatively weak coupling of 7.18(5) meV.

This is, to our knowledge, the first sub-nanometer active flattening of a substrate longer than 15 cm.

We have studied the two-dimensional S=1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet $Cu(pz)_2(ClO_4)_2$ using inelastic neutron scattering and series expansion calculations. We show that the presence of antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions enhances quantum fluctuations associated with resonating valence bonds. Intermediate magnetic fields lead to a selective tuning of resonating valence bonds and a spectacular inversion of the zone-boundary dispersion, providing novel insight into 2D antiferromagnetism in the quantum limit.

Recent numerical and analytical work has shown that for the square-lattice Heisenberg model the boundary can induce Dimer correlations near the edge which are absent in spin-wave theories and non-linear sigma model approaches. Here, we calculate the nearest-neighbor spin correlations parallel and perpendicular to the boundary in a semi-infinite system for two different square-lattice Heisenberg models: (i) A frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model with nearest and second neighbor couplings and (ii) a spatially anisotropic Heisenberg model, with nearest-neighbor couplings $J$ perpendicular to the boundary and $J^\prime$ parallel to the boundary. We find that in the latter model, as $J^\prime/J$ is reduced from unity the Dimer correlations near the edge become longer ranged. In contrast, in the frustrated model, with increasing $J_2$, dimer correlations are strengthened near the boundary but they decrease rapidly with distance. These results imply that deep inside the Néel phase of the $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model, dimer correlations remain short-ranged. Hence, if there is a direct transition between the two it is either first order or there is a very narrow critical region.

Using series expansions and spin-wave theory we calculate the spin-stiffness anisotropy $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ in Heisenberg models on the square lattice with anisotropic couplings $J_x,J_y$. Using series expansions and spin-wave theory we calculate the spin-stiffness anisotropy $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ in Heisenberg models on the square lattice with anisotropic couplings $J_x,J_y$. We find that for the weakly anisotropic spin-half model ($J_x\approx J_y$), $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ deviates substantially from the naive estimate $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy} \approx J_x/J_y$. We argue that this deviation can be responsible for pinning the electronic liquid crystal direction, a novel effect recently discovered in YBCO. For completeness, we also study the spin-stiffness for arbitrary anisotropy $J_x/J_y$ for spin-half and spin-one models. In the limit of $J_y/J_x\to 0$, when the model reduces to weakly coupled chains, the two show dramatically different behavior. In the spin-one model, the stiffness along the chains goes to zero, implying the onset of Haldane-gap phase, whereas for spin-half the stiffness along the chains increases monotonically from a value of $0.18 J_x$ for $J_y/J_x=1$ towards $0.25 J_x$ for $J_y/J_x\to 0$. Spin-wave theory is extremely accurate for spin-one but breaks down for spin-half presumably due to the onset of topological terms.

We study spin-half and spin-one Heisenberg models in the limit where one dimensional (1-D) linear chains, with exchange constant J1, are weakly coupled in an anisotropic triangular lattice geometry. Results are obtained by means of linked-cluster series expansions at zero temperature around different magnetically ordered phases. We study the non-colinear spiral phases that arise classically in the model and the colinear antiferromagnet that has been recently proposed for the spin-half model by Starykh and Balents using a Renormalization Group approach. We find that such phases can be stabilized in the spin-half model for arbitrarily small coupling between the chains. For vanishing coupling between the chains the energy of each phase must approach that of decoupled linear chains. With increasing inter-chain coupling, the non-colinear phase appears to have a lower energy in our calculations. For the spin-one chain, we find that there is a critical interchain coupling needed to overcome the Haldane gap. When spin-one chains are coupled in an unfrustrated manner, the critical coupling is very small (~0.01J1) and agrees well with previous chain mean-field studies. When they are coupled in the frustrated triangular-lattice geometry, the critical coupling required to develop magnetic order is substantially larger (> 0.3J1). The colinear phase is not obtained for the spin-one Heisenberg model.
