The Hough transform search for continuous gravitational waves
Abstract: This paper describes an incoherent method to search for continuous gravitational waves based on the Hough transform, a well known technique used for detecting patterns in digital images. We apply the Hough transform to detect patterns in the time-frequency plane of the data produced by an earth-based gravitational wave detector. Two different flavors of searches will be considered, depending on… ▽ More

Setting upper limits on the strength of periodic gravitational waves using the first science data from the GEO600 and LIGO detectors
Abstract: Data collected by the GEO600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null r… ▽ More

Optimal Strategies for Sinusoidal Signal Detection
Abstract: We derive and study optimal and nearly-optimal strategies for the detection of sinusoidal signals hidden in additive (Gaussian and non-Gaussian) noise. Such strategies are an essential part of algorithms for the detection of the gravitational Continuous Wave (CW) signals produced by pulsars. Optimal strategies are derived for the case where the signal phase is not known and the product of the s… ▽ More

Vlasov calculations of nuclear ground states
Abstract: We describe some properties of nuclear ground states using a microscopic Vlasov approach. We propose a new method to find the energy minimum of the system enforcing the fermionic nature of the system. Calculations are performed for two different parametrization of the mean field: a simple momentum independent Skyrme potential and a momentum dependent one as proposed by Gale, Bertsch and Das Gupt… ▽ More

Formation and decay of super heavy systems
Abstract: We investigate the formation and the decay of heavy systems which are above the fission barrier. By using a microscopic simulation of constraint molecular dynamics (CoMD) on Au+Au collision, we observe composite states stay for very long time before decaying by fission.

Constraint Molecular Dynamics approach to Fermionic systems
Abstract: We propose a Constraint Molecular Dynamics model for Fermionic system. In this approach the equations of motion of wave packets for the nuclear many-body problem are solved by imposing that the one-body occupation probability $\bar{f}(r,p,t)$ can assume only values less or equal to 1. This condition reflects the Fermionic nature of the studied systems and it is implemented with a fast algorithm… ▽ More

Searching for continuous gravitational wave signals: the hierarchical Hough transform algorithm
Abstract: It is well known that matched filtering techniques cannot be applied for searching extensive parameter space volumes for continuous gravitational wave signals. This is the reason why alternative strategies are being pursued. Hierarchical strategies are best at investigating a large parameter space when there exist computational power constraints. Algorithms of this kind are being implemented by… ▽ More

Is the squeezing of relic gravitational waves produced by inflation detectable?
Abstract: Grishchuk has shown that the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by an inflationary phase in the early Universe has an unusual property: it is not a stationary Gaussian random process. Due to squeezing, the phases of the different waves are correlated in a deterministic way, arising from the process of parametric amplification that created them. The resulting random process is… ▽ More

End-to-end algorithm for hierarchical area searches for long-duration GW sources for GEO 600
Abstract: We describe a hierarchical, highly parallel computer algorithm to perform searches for unknown sources of continuous gravitational waves -- spinning neutron stars in the Galaxy -- over wide areas of the sky and wide frequency bandwidths. We optimize the algorithm for an observing period of 4 months and an available computing power of 20 Gflops, in a search for neutron stars resembling millisecon… ▽ More
