This paper develops and analyses semi-discrete numerical method for two dimensional Vlasov-Stokes' system with periodic boundary condition. The method is based on coupling of semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method for the Vlasov equation with discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the stationary incompressible Stokes' equation. The proposed method is both mass and momentum conservative. Since it is difficult to establish non-negativity of the discrete local density, the generalized discrete Stokes' operator become non-coercive and indefinite and under smallness condition on the discretization parameter, optimal error estimates are established with help of a modified the Stokes' projection to deal with Stokes' part and with the help of a special projection to tackle the Vlasov part. Finally, numerical experiments based on the dG method combined with a splitting algorithm are performed.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the Vlasov-Stokes' system in three dimensions with periodic boundary conditions in the spatial variable. We prove the existence of a unique strong solution to this two-phase model under the assumption that initial velocity moments of certain order are bounded. We use a fixed point argument to arrive at a global-in-time solution.

Stability and optimal convergence analysis of a non-uniform implicit-explicit L1 finite element method (IMEX-L1-FEM) is studied for a class of time-fractional linear partial differential/integro-differential equations with non-self-adjoint elliptic part having (space-time) variable coefficients. The proposed scheme is based on a combination of an IMEX-L1 method on graded mesh in the temporal direction and a finite element method in the spatial direction. With the help of a discrete fractional Grönwall inequality, global almost optimal error estimates in $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms are derived for the problem with initial data $u_0 \in H_0^1(Ω)\cap H^2(Ω)$. The novelty of our approach is based on managing the interaction of the L1 approximation of the fractional derivative and the time discrete elliptic operator to derive the optimal estimate in $H^1$-norm directly. Furthermore, a super convergence result is established when the elliptic operator is self-adjoint with time and space varying coefficients, and as a consequence, an $L^\infty$ error estimate is obtained for 2D problems that too with the initial condition is in $ H_0^1(Ω)\cap H^2(Ω)$. All results proved in this paper are valid uniformly as $α\longrightarrow 1^{-}$, where $α$ is the order of the Caputo fractional derivative. Numerical experiments are presented to validate our theoretical findings.

The lowest-order nonconforming virtual element extends the Morley triangular element to polygons for the approximation of the weak solution $u\in V:=H^2_0(Ω)$ to the biharmonic equation. The abstract framework allows (even a mixture of) two examples of the local discrete spaces $V_h(P)$ and a smoother allows rough source terms $F\in V^*=H^{-2}(Ω)$. The a priori and a posteriori error analysis in this paper circumvents any trace of second derivatives by some computable conforming companion operator $J:V_h\to V$ from the nonconforming virtual element space $V_h$. The operator $J$ is a right-inverse of the interpolation operator and leads to optimal error estimates in piecewise Sobolev norms without any additional regularity assumptions on $u\in V$. As a smoother the companion operator modifies the discrete right-hand side and then allows a quasi-best approximation. An explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimator is reliable and efficient up to data oscillations. Numerical examples display the predicted empirical convergence rates for uniform and optimal convergence rates for adaptive mesh-refinement.

For a well-posed non-selfadjoint indefinite second-order linear elliptic PDE with general coefficients $\mathbf A, \mathbf b,γ$ in $L^\infty$ and symmetric and uniformly positive definite coefficient matrix $\mathbf A$, this paper proves that mixed finite element problems are uniquely solvable and the discrete solutions are uniformly bounded, whenever the underlying shape-regular triangulation is sufficiently fine. This applies to the Raviart-Thomas (RT) and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (BDM) finite element families of any order and in any space dimension and leads to the best-approximation estimate in $H(div)\times L^2$ as well as in in $L^2\times L^2$ up to oscillations. This generalises earlier contributions for piecewise Lipschitz continuous coefficients to $L^\infty$ coefficients. The compactness argument of Schatz and Wang for the displacement-oriented problem does not apply immediately to the mixed formulation in $H(div)\times L^2$. But it allows the uniform approximation of some $L^2$ contributions and can be combined with a recent $L^2$ best-approximation result from the medius analysis. This technique circumvents any regularity assumption and the application of a Fortin interpolation operator.

First order backward Euler method is applied for the time discretization, whereas conforming finite element method is used for the spatial discretization. Optimal $L^2$ error estimates for the semidiscrete as well as the fully discrete approximations of the velocity and of the pressure are derived for realistically assumed conditions on the data. The main ingredient in the proof is the appropriate exploitation of the inverse of the penalized Stokes operator, negative norm estimates and time weighted estimates. Using elliptic projection of the associated linearised stationary problem with Gronwall type result, optimal error estimates are derived, when piecewise polynomials of degree $r\geq 1$ are used, which improve upon earlier results of Axelsson [Numer. The velocity is fully decoupled using the momentum balance equation, and it is later recovered by a post-process. A finite element method is also proposed, consisting in equal-order Nédélec finite elements and piecewise continuous polynomials for the vorticity and the Bernoulli pressure, respectively. The {\it a priori} error analysis is carried out in the $\mathrm{L}^2$-norm for vorticity, pressure, and velocity; under a smallness assumption either on the convecting velocity, or on the mesh parameter. Furthermore, an {\it a posteriori} error estimator is designed and its robustness and efficiency are studied using weighted norms. Finally, a set of numerical examples in 2D and 3D is given, where the error indicator serves to guide adaptive mesh refinement. These tests illustrate the behaviour of the new formulation in typical flow conditions, and they also confirm the theoretical findings.

The nonconforming virtual element method (NCVEM) for the approximation of the weak solution to a general linear second-order non-selfadjoint indefinite elliptic PDE in a polygonal domain is analyzed under reduced elliptic regularity. The main tool in the a priori error analysis is the connection between the nonconforming virtual element space and the Sobolev space $H^1_0(Ω)$ by a right-inverse $J$ of the interpolation operator $I_h$. The stability of the discrete solution allows for the proof of existence of a unique discrete solution, of a discrete inf-sup estimate and, consequently, for optimal error estimates in the $H^1$ and $L^2$ norms. The explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimate for the NCVEM is reliable and efficient up to the stabilization and oscillation terms. Numerical experiments on different types of polygonal meshes illustrate the robustness of an error estimator and support the improved convergence rate of an adaptive mesh-refinement in comparison to the uniform mesh-refinement.

This paper focusses on the von Kármán equations for the moderately large deformation of a very thin plate with the convex obstacle constraint leading to a coupled system of semilinear fourth-order obstacle problem and motivates its nonconforming Morley finite element approximation. The first part establishes the well-posedness of the von Kármán obstacle problem and also discusses the uniqueness of the solution under an a priori and an a posteriori smallness condition on the data. The second part of the article discusses the regularity result of Frehse from 1971 and combines it with the regularity of the solution on a polygonal domain. The third part of the article shows an a priori error estimate for optimal convergence rates for the Morley finite element approximation to the von Kármán obstacle problem for small data. The article concludes with numerical results that illustrates the requirement of smallness assumption on the data for optimal convergence rate.

In this paper, a new mixed finite element scheme using element-wise stabilization is introduced for the biharmonic equation with variable coefficient on Lipschitz polyhedral domains. The proposed scheme doesn't involve any integration along mesh interfaces. The gradient of the solution is approximated by $H({\rm div})$-conforming $BDM_{k+1}$ element or vector valued Lagrange element with order $k+1$, while the solution is approximated by Lagrange element with order $k+2$ for any $k\geq 0$.This scheme can be easily implemented and produces positive definite linear system. We provide a new discrete $H^{2}$-norm stability, which is useful not only in analysis of this scheme but also in $C^{0}$ interior penalty methods and DG methods. Optimal convergences in both discrete $H^{2}$-norm and $L^{2}$-norm are derived. This scheme with its analysis is further generalized to the von Kármán equations. Improving upon earlier results (Karaa {\it et al.}, IMA J. Numer. Anal. 2016), optimal error estimates in $L^2(Ω)$- and $H^1(Ω)$-norms for the semidiscrete problem with smooth and middly smooth initial data, i.e., $v\in H^2(Ω)\cap H^1_0(Ω)$ and $v\in H^1_0(Ω)$ are established. For nonsmooth data, that is, $v\in L^2(Ω)$, the optimal $L^2(Ω)$-error estimate is shown to hold only under an additional assumption on the triangulation, which is known to be satisfied for symmetric triangulations. Superconvergence result is also proved and as a consequence, a quasi-optimal error estimate is established in the $L^\infty(Ω)$-norm. Further, two fully discrete schemes using convolution quadrature in time generated by the backward Euler and the second-order backward difference methods are analyzed, and error estimates are derived for both smooth and nonsmooth initial data. Based on a comparison of the standard Galerkin finite element solution with the FVE solution and exploiting tools for Laplace transforms with semigroup type properties of the FVE solution operator, our analysis is then extended in a unified manner to several time-fractional order evolution problems. The optimal pair of the constrained problem is obtained as the limit of optimal pair sequence of the unconstrained problem. In this paper, the finite element Galerkin method is applied to the equations of motion arising in the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic fluid flow model, when the forcing function is in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$. Some a priori estimates for the exact solution, which are valid uniformly in time as $t\mapsto \infty$ and even uniformly in the retardation time $κ$ as $κ\mapsto 0$, are derived. It is shown that the semidiscrete method admits a global attractor. Further, with the help of a priori bounds and Sobolev-Stokes projection, optimal error estimates for the velocity in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ and $L^{\infty}(H^1_0)$-norms and for the pressure in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$-norm are established. Since the constants involved in error estimates have an exponential growth in time, therefore, in the last part of the article, under certain uniqueness condition, the error bounds are established which are valid uniformly in time. Finally, some numerical experiments are conducted which confirm our theoretical findings.

In this paper, existence of a strong global solution for all finite time is derived for the Kirchhoff's model of parabolic type. Based on exponential weight function, some new regularity results which reflect the exponential decay property are obtained for the exact solution. For the related dynamics, existence of a global attractor is shown to hold for the problem, when the non- homogeneous forcing function is either independent of time or in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$. With finite element Galerkin method applied in spatial direction kee** time variable continuous, a semidiscrete scheme is analyzed and it is, further, established that the semi-discrete system has a global discrete attractor. Optimal error estimates in $L^{\infty}(H^1_0)$-norm are derived which are valid uniformly in time. Further, based on a Backward Euler method, a completely discrete scheme is developed and error estimates are derived. It is further observed that in case $f = 0$ or $f =O(e^{-γ_0 t})$ with $γ_0 > 0,$ the discrete solutions and also error estimates decay exponentially. Finally, some numerical experiments are discussed which confirm our theoretical findings.

In this paper, a semi-discrete spatial finite volume (FV) method is proposed and analyzed for approximating solutions of anomalous subdiffusion equations involving a temporal fractional derivative of order $α\in (0,1)$ in a two-dimensional convex polygonal domain. Optimal error estimates in $L^\infty(L^2)$- norm is shown to hold. Superconvergence result is proved and as a consequence, it is established that quasi-optimal order of convergence in $L^{\infty}(L^{\infty})$ holds. We also consider a fully discrete scheme that employs FV method in space, and a piecewise linear discontinuous Galerkin method to discretize in temporal direction. It is, further, shown that convergence rate is of order $O(h^2+k^{1+α}),$ where $h$ denotes the space discretizing parameter and $k$ represents the temporal discretizing parameter. Numerical experiments indicate optimal convergence rates in both time and space, and also illustrate that the imposed regularity assumptions are pessimistic.

The convergence of an adaptive mixed finite element method for general second order linear elliptic problems defined on simply connected bounded polygonal domains is analyzed in this paper. The main difficulties in the analysis are posed by the non-symmetric and indefinite form of the problem along with the lack of the orthogonality property in mixed finite element methods. The important tools in the analysis are a posteriori error estimators, quasi-orthogonality property and quasi-discrete reliability established using representation formula for the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas solution in terms of the Crouzeix-Raviart solution of the problem. An adaptive marking in each step for the local refinement is based on the edge residual and volume residual terms of the a posteriori estimator. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical analysis.

In this paper, an error analysis of a three steps two level Galekin finite element method for the two dimensional transient Navier-Stokes equations is discussed. First of all, the problem is discretized in spatial direction by employing finite element method on a coarse mesh $\mathcal{T} _H$ with mesh size $H$. Then, in step two, the nonlinear system is linearized around the coarse grid solution, say, $u_H$, which is similar to Newton's type iteration and the resulting linear system is solved on a finer mesh $\mathcal{T}_h$ with mesh size $h$. In step three, a correction is obtained through solving a linear problem on the finer mesh and an updated final solution is derived. Optimal error estimates in $L^{\infty}({\bf L}^2)$-norm, when $h=\mathcal{O} (H^{2-δ})$ and in $L^{\infty}(\bH^1)$-norm, when $h=\mathcal{O}(H^{4-δ})$ for the velocity and in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$-norm, when $h=\mathcal{O}(H^{4-δ})$ for the pressure are established for arbitrarily small $δ>0$. Further, under uniqueness assumption, these estimates are proved to be valid uniformly in time. Then based on backward Euler method, a completely discrete scheme is analyzed and {\it a priori} error estimates are derived. Finally, the paper is concluded with some numerical experiments.

Based on the analysis of an expanded mixed type Ritz-Volterra projection, {\it a priori} $hp$-error estimates in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$-norm of the velocity as well as of the displacement, which are optimal in the discretizing parameter $h$ and suboptimal in the degree of polynomial $p$ are derived. For optimal estimates of the displacement in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$-norm with reduced regularity on the exact solution, a variant of Baker's nonstandard energy formulation is developed and analyzed. Results on order of convergence which are similar in spirit to linear elliptic and parabolic problems are established for the semidiscrete case after suitably modifying the numerical fluxes. For the completely discrete scheme, an implicit-in-time procedure is formulated, stability results are derived and {\it a priori} error estimates are discussed. Finally, numerical experiments on two dimensional domains are conducted which confirm the theoretical results.

In the semidiscrete case, optimal error estimates in L^{\infty}(L2) and L^{\infty}(H1)- norms are shown to hold with minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data, whereas quasi-optimal estimate in derived in L^{\infty}(L^{\infty})-norm under higher regularity on the data. Based on a second order explicit method in time, a completely discrete scheme is examined and optimal error estimates are established with a mild condition on the space and time discretizing parameters. Finally, some numerical experiments are conducted which confirm the theoretical order of convergence.

The state-of-the art proof of a global inf-sup condition on mixed finite element schemes does not allow for an analysis of truly indefinite, second-order linear elliptic PDEs. This paper, therefore, first analyses a nonconforming finite element discretization which converges owing to some a priori $L^2$ error estimates even for reduced regularity on non-convex polygonal domains. An equivalence result of that nonconforming finite element scheme to the mixed finite element method (MFEM) leads to the well-posedness of the discrete solution and to a priori error estimates for the MFEM. The explicit residual-based a posteriori error analysis allows some reliable and efficient error control and motivates some adaptive discretization which improves the empirical convergence rates in three computational benchmarks.
