The emergence of accurate open large language models (LLMs) has led to a race towards performant quantization techniques which can enable their execution on end-user devices. In this paper, we revisit the problem of ``extreme'' LLM compression -- defined as targeting extremely low bit counts, such as 2 to 3 bits per parameter -- from the point of view of classic methods in Multi-Codebook Quantization (MCQ). Our algorithm, called AQLM, generalizes the classic Additive Quantization (AQ) approach for information retrieval to advance the state-of-the-art in LLM compression, via two innovations: 1) learned additive quantization of weight matrices in input-adaptive fashion, and 2) joint optimization of codebook parameters across each transformer blocks. Broadly, AQLM is the first scheme that is Pareto optimal in terms of accuracy-vs-model-size when compressing to less than 3 bits per parameter, and significantly improves upon all known schemes in the extreme compression (2bit) regime. In addition, AQLM is practical: we provide fast GPU and CPU implementations of AQLM for token generation, which enable us to match or outperform optimized FP16 implementations for speed, while executing in a much smaller memory footprint.

Quantization (Alistarh et al., 2017) is an important (stochastic) compression technique that reduces the volume of transmitted bits during each communication round in distributed model training. Suresh et al. (2022) introduce correlated quantizers and show their advantages over independent counterparts by analyzing distributed SGD communication complexity. We analyze the forefront distributed non-convex optimization algorithm MARINA (Gorbunov et al., 2022) utilizing the proposed correlated quantizers and show that it outperforms the original MARINA and distributed SGD of Suresh et al. (2022) with regard to the communication complexity. We significantly refine the original analysis of MARINA without any additional assumptions using the weighted Hessian variance (Tyurin et al., 2022), and then we expand the theoretical framework of MARINA to accommodate a substantially broader range of potentially correlated and biased compressors, thus dilating the applicability of the method beyond the conventional independent unbiased compressor setup. Extensive experimental results corroborate our theoretical findings.

The mechanism of turbulent viscosity is the central question in investigations of turbulence. This is also the case in the accretion disk theory, where turbulence is considered to be responsible for the outward transport of angular momentum in the accretion disk. In turbulent flows, vortices transport momentum over their length scales providing the mechanism of viscosity that is controlled by mass entrainment. We have earlier proposed an entrainment model for the particular case of the relativistic jets in the radio galaxy 3C31. In this paper, we further constrain the model parameters. The model (in the non-relativistic part) is successfully tested versus experimental and simulation data on the Reynolds stresses of free mixing layers and predicts the Smagorinsky constant $C_\mathrm{S} \approx 0.11$, which is consistent with the experimental range for shear flows $C_\mathrm{S} \approx 0.1-0.12$. For accretion disks, the entrainment model allows us to derive the same accretion mass rate as in the Shakura \& Sunyaev's $α$-model without appealing to the turbulent kinematic viscosity $ν_\mathrm{t}$, and the viscosity parameter $α$ derived in the form $\displaystyle α= -\frac{8}{3} βs_\mathrm{T} \frac{\mathrm{v_t}^2}{c_\mathrm{s}^2}$ depends on the power $s_\mathrm{T}$ of the temperature slope along the disk radius, $T\propto r^{s_\mathrm{T}}$, and quadratically on the turbulent velocity $\mathrm{v_t}$.

The effective mass approximation is analysed in a nonperturbative kinetic theory approach to strong field excitations in graphene [1,2]. This problem is highly actual for the investigation of quantum radiation from graphene [3], where the collision integrals in the photon kinetic equation are rather complicated functionals of the distribution functions of the charge carriers. These functions are needed in the explicit analytical definition as solutions of the kinetic equations for the electron-hole excitations. In the present work it is shown that the suggested approach is rather effective in a certain range of parameters for the pulse of an external electromagnetic field. For example, the applicability condition of the approximation in the case of a harmonic field is $\hbar ω^2 / (\sqrt{2} e E_0 v_F) < 1$, were $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity. In the standard massive quantum electrodynamics the usability of the analogical approximation is very narrow.

The properties of the forced oscillations of electron-positron plasma (EPP) generated from vacuum under the action of a short laser pulse are considered. Calculating the density of the conduction and polarization currents within the quantum kinetic approach, we demonstrate the presence of plasma oscillations at the frequency of the external field and its odd harmonics. It is expected that radiation generated by these plasma oscillations can be observed outside the interaction region, for example, outside the focal spot of two counterpropagating laser beams, and can serve as an indicator of the Schwinger mechanism of the EPP creation from vacuum.

A number of physical processes occurring in a flat one-dimensional graphene structure under the action of strong time-dependent electric fields are considered. It is assumed that the Dirac model can be applied to the graphene as a subsystem of the general system under consideration, which includes an interaction with quantized electromagnetic field. The Dirac model itself in the external electromagnetic field (in particular, the behavior of charged carriers) is treated nonperturbatively with respect to this field within the framework of strong-field QED with unstable vacuum. This treatment is combined with a kinetic description of the radiation of photons from the electron-hole plasma created from the vacuum under the action of the electric field. An interaction with quantized electromagnetic field is described perturbatively. A significant development of the kinetic equation formalism is presented. A number of specific results are derived in course of analytical and numerical study of the equations. We believe that some of predicted effects and properties of considered processes may be verified experimentally. Among these effects, it should be noted a characteristic spectral composition anisotropy of the quantum radiation and a possible presence of even harmonics of the external field in the latter radiation.

As examples the constant electric field as well as an electric field of short high-frequency pulses are considered. The dependence of the induced conduction and polarization currents characteristics on the pulse intensity, pulse duration, and polarization is investigated. The characteristics of secondary electromagnetic radiation resulting from the alternating currents is investigated. The nonlinear response to the external electric field characterizes graphene as an active medium. Qualitative agreement is obtained with the existing experimental result of measurements of currents in constant electric fields and radiation from graphene in the case of excitation by means of the infrared and optical pulses.

We present a self-consistent kinetic description of an electron-positron-photon ($e^-e^+γ$) plasma generated from vacuum in a focal spot of counterpropagating laser pulses. We rely on a model of purely time-dependent external electric field, but properly take into account quantum radiation from plasma, as well as the semiclassical internal (plasma) field. To achieve this goal we derive a system of coupled kinetic equations for the electron, positron, and photon plasma species supplemented with Maxwell equation for the internal electric field. Quantum radiation is included systematically by taking into account the pair creation/annihilation and radiation channels of the BBGKY chain in quasiparticle representation, which we truncate at second order of perturbation theory. An important application of our results would be consistent consideration of photon emission and cascade production beyond the locally constant field approximation, including the depletion of the driving laser field and a possible scenario of cascade saturation due to thermalization.

The formalism of the nonperturbative description of transport phenomena in graphene on the framework of the quantum kinetic equation for the Schwinger-like process is compared with the description on the basis of Zener-Klein tunneling. The regime of ballistic conductivity in a constant electric field is considered.
In the latter case the interaction of carriers with electric field is described in terms of the spatial dependence of their potential energy (x-representation). The presented kinetic formalism uses an alternative method of describing the interaction with a field through the introduction of a quasimomentum $P=p-(e/c)A(t)$ where $A(t)$ is the vector potential (t-representation). Both approaches should lead to the same physical characteristics of the described process.
The measurement of the current in experiments is realized in static conditions determined by the potential difference between the electrodes and the distance between them. These parameters are native for the x-representation. On the contrary, in the approach based on the t-representation it is necessary to consider the situation in dynamics and introduce the effective lifetime of the generated carriers. In the ballistic regime this time depends on the distance between the electrodes.
We give a detailed comparison of these two descriptions of the current and demonstrate good coincidence with the experimental data of the alternative approach based on the t-representation. It provides a reliable foundation for the application of nonperturbative methods adopted from strong field QED, that allows to include in the consideration more general models of the field (arbitrary polarization and time dependence) and to extend the scope of the theory.

In these lecture notes we give an introduction to the kinetic equation approach to pair production form the vacuum in strong, time-dependent external fields (dynamical Schwinger process). We first give a derivation of the kinetic equation with the source term for the case of fermions starting from the Dirac equation and for bosons from the Klein-Gordon equation. In a second part we discuss the application of the approach to the situation of external field pulses as single-sheeted functions of time (like the Sauter-pulse) and as multi- sheeted functions approximating the situation in the focal point of counter-propagating laser beams. Special emphasis is on the discussion of the time evolution of the system that exhibits the characteristics of a field-induced phase transition for which we discuss the behaviour of the entropy and particle density of the system. We give an outlook to applications of the approach in describing particle production in strong fields formed in particle and nuclear collisions.

Global magnetic fields of flare stars can evolve rapidly, in time scale of hundreds or dozens of days. We believe, that such changes result from rapid superposition of local magnetic fields generated by differential rotation of those stars. We discuss possible mechanisms of generation and dissipation of local and global magnetic fields in sample flare stars OT Ser and YZ CMi. We propose mechanism of magnetic braking of these stars, in which differential rotation generates local magnetic fields, and eventually energy accumulated in local fields is radiated away by flares. We obtained estimates of the rotational energy and the energy of the global magnetic field of OT Ser and YZ CMi. We also show that the energy of the local magnetic fields dissipated during superflare of YZ CMi on 9 February 2008 (UT 20:22:00) did not influence the global magnetic field of this star.

In the present contribution the features of the this process will be considered in the few photon domain where $ω\sim m$. We observe a narrowing of the transient domain of the fast oscillations and, mainly, a considerable growth of the effectiveness of the EPP production. Under these circumstances, we see an increase of the effectiveness of the EPP creation in the particular case of a bifrequent excitation, where both mechanisms (tunneling and few photon) act simultaneously [2,3].

The features of vacuum particle creation in an external classical field are studied for simplest external field models in $3 + 1$ dimensional QED. The investigation is based on a kinetic equation that is a nonperturbative consequence of the fundamental equations of motion of QED. The observed features of the evolution of the system apply on the qualitative level also for systems of other nature and therefore are rather general. Examples from cosmology and condensed matter physics illustrate this statement. The common basis for the description of these systems are kinetic equations for vacuum particle creation belonging to the class of integro-differential equations of non-Markovian type with fastly oscillating kernel. This allows to characterize processes of this type as belonging to the class of field induced phase transitions.

The radio nebula W50 harbours the relativistic binary system SS433, which is a source of the powerful wind and jets. The origin of W50 is wrapped in the interplay of the wind, supernova remnant and jets. The evolution of the jets on the scales of the nebula is a Rosetta stone for its origin. To disentangle the roles of these components, we study physical conditions of the jets propagation inside W50, and determine deceleration of the jets. The morphology and parameters of the interior of W50 are analyzed using the available observations of the eastern X-ray lobe, which traces the jet. In order to estimate deceleration of this jet, we devised a simplistic model of the viscous interaction, via turbulence, of a jet with the ambient medium, which would fit mass entrainment from the ambient medium into the jets of the radio galaxy 3C31, the well studied case of continuously decelerating jets. X-ray observations suggest that the eastern jet persists through W50 as hollow one, and is recollimated to the opening $\sim 30^\circ$. From the thermal emission of the eastern X-ray lobe, we determine a pressure of $P \sim 3\cdot 10^{-11}$ erg/cm$^3$ inside W50. In the frame of a theory of the dynamics of radiative supernova remnants and stellar wind bubbles, this pressure in combination with other known parameters restricts W50's origin to a supernova happened $\sim 100\,000$ yr ago. Also, this pressure in our entrainment model gives a deceleration of the jet by $\sim 60\%$ in the bounds of W50's spherical component, of radius $\sim 40$ pc. In this case, the age of the jet should be $\ll 27\,000$ yr so as to satisfy the sphericity of W50. The entrainment model comes to the viscous stress in a jet of a form $σ= αP$, where the viscosity parameter $α$ is predefined by the model.

Such a comparison demonstrates a considerable divergence results. The results obtained in this work on the basis of the kinetic approach are most optimistic for the observation of an $e^{+}e^{-}$ - plasma in the range of optical and x-ray laser facilities. This could be the inverse-Compton scattered emission of the SS433 accretion disk funnel, which is collimated in a cone before the scattering off relativistic electrons - so called emission cone, hypothetical and invisible directly. This model would remove the synchrotron model problems of the X-ray emission: of acceleration of the emitting electrons to extreme Lorenz factors $γ> 10^9$ in the mildly relativistic SS433 jets and morphological difference of W50 in the synchrotron radio and X-ray bands. Our study of the comptonization model showed up that in the case of the minimal factor $γ_{\rm min}$ of the order 1 the energy of the relativistic particles, which upscatter the cone photons, is close to or exceeds total energy of the nebula - the case of inapplicability of the model. In the case of $γ_{\rm min} > 10$ the cone emission is comptonized beyond the 1 - 10\,keV band, consequently the existing observational data are non-sensitive to the emission cone.

Where and how this transformation of energy is curried out, it is not yet known. What can we learn from it that the jets decelerate and the deceleration is non-dissipative, i.e. radiatively dark. In this paper we unclose the observed deviations of the precessing radio jets of SS\,433, within a few arcseconds from a jets source, from the ballistic track, described by the kinematic model, as a signature of the deceleration which, on other hand, issues from the jets colliding with ambient medium. For that we model kinematics of these colliding jets. The ram pressure on the jets is estimated from the observed profile of brightness of synchrotron radiation along the radio jets. We have found that to fit observed locus the radio jets should be decelerated and twisted, additionally to the precession twist, mostly within the first one-fifth of precession period, and further they extend imitating ballistic jets. The fitted physical parameters of the jet model turned out to be physically reliable and characteristic for SS\,433 jets that unlikely to be occasional. This model explains naturally, and meets approval by a) the observed shock-pressed morphology of the radio jets and their brightness, b) the observed $\sim 10%$ deflections from the standard kinematic model --- just a magnitude of the jet speed decrement in the model, c) regularly observed for the radio jets the precession phase deviation from the standard kinematic model prediction, d) dichotomy of distance to the object, 4.8\,kpc vs. 5.5\,kpc, determined on the basis of the radio jets kinematics on scales of a sub-arcsecond and several arcseconds.

Solutions of a kinetic equation are investigated which describe, on a nonperturbative basis, the vacuum creation of quasiparticle electron-positron pairs due to a strong laser field. The dependence of the quasiparticle electron (positron) distribution function and the particle number density is explored in a wide range of the laser radiation parameters, i.e., the wavelength λand amplitude of electric field strength E_0. Three domains are found: the domain of vacuum polarization effects where the density of the e-e+ pairs is small (the "calm valley"), and two accumulation domains in which the production rate of the e-e+ pairs is strongly increased and the e-e+ pair density can reach a significant value (the short wave length domain and the strong field one). In particular, the obtained results point to a complicated short-distance electromagnetic structure of the physical vacuum in the domain of short wavelengths λ\lessim λ_{acc} = π/m. For moderately strong fields E_0 \lesssim E_c=m^2/e, the accumulation regime can be realized where a plasma with a high density of e-e+ quasiparticles can be achieved. In this domain of the field strengths and in the whole investigated range of wavelengths, an observation of the dynamical Schwinger effect can be facilitated.

We use the low density approximation within the kinetic theory approach to vacuum creation of an e-e+ pair plasma (EPPP) in a strong laser field in order to investigate the dependence of the observed EPPP on the form and parameters of a single laser pulse. The EPPP distribution function is calculated for an arbitrary time dependence of the electric field in the multiphoton domain (adiabaticity parameter gamma >> 1). The dependence on the field strength, the form and spectrum of the field pulse is investigated on the basis both analytical and numerical methods. The obtained results can be useful for examining some observable secondary processes associated with the dynamical Schwinger effect.

The problem of the interaction between the precessing mildly relativistic radio jets of SS433 and an ambient medium has been often invoked in interpretations of the jets behaviour. The dynamical interaction could be responsible for disagreements between the kinematic model and observations of the jets. To estimate the relative ram pressure of the jet and im**ing matter we used the profile along the radio jets of brightness of synchrotron radiation. From this we estimated magnitude of possible deceleration and twisting of the jets, and compare model locus of the jets with observations. The magnitude is enough big to be observed, that addresses an applicability of the kinematic model, based mostly on the optical observations, to the radio jets and a problem of the kinematic distance to the object in particular.

Critical analysis shows that all estimates of the velocity of the radio jets of SS433 and the distance to the object based on the relativistic effect of light travel time are not accurate enough to be conclusive. From our elaboration of kinematics of knots in the radio jets in a sequence of images, a kinematic model of the radio jets with a velocity of 0.20c is a little better than one with the canonical velocity 0.26c observed actually in the optical and X-ray jets of SS433. Consequently the distance to SS433 should be lowered to 4.3 kpc.
Besides this difference in velocity, the shift of the radio jets in the precession phase reveals itself in non-transient fashion, whereas it is not observed in the optical jets. In light of these differences, the jets must have two-component structure: with on-axis channel - optical jets, and low velocity shell - radio jets.

Multicolor Panoramic Photometer-Polarimeter (MPPP) with a time resolution of 1 microsecond has been built based on a PSD and used at the 6-meter telescope in SAO (Russia). The device allows registration of the photon fluxes in four photometric bands simultaneously and finding values of 3 Stokes parameters. MPPP consists of Position-Sensitive Detector (PSD), acquisition MANIA-system, polarization unit and a set of dichroic filters. MPPP gives a possibility of detecting photons in 2 pupils with a size of 10 - 15 arc sec centered on the object and comparison star positions simultaneously. The first half of the object photon flux passes through the phase rotating plate and polarizer, and the second one through the polarizer alone. MPPP registers in each of the 4 filters four images of the object with different orientations of polarization plane and one image of a comparison star. It allows measuring instantaneous Stokes parameters. The main astrophysical problems to be solved with MPPP are as follows: investigation of optical pulsars; study of GRB phenomenon in the optical range; searching for single black holes; study of fast variability of X-ray binaries. As an illustration of MPPP use, the results of observations at the 6-meter telescope of Crab pulsar and soft gamma repeater are presented.

The main results obtained are integral estimates of solutions of the hard-sphere Boltzmann equations, which imply that the velocity distribution functions $f(v)$ behave in a certain sense as $C\exp(-r|v|^s)$ for $|v|$ large. The values of $s$, which we call {\em the orders of tails}, range from $s=1$ to $s=2$, depending on the model of external forcing. The method we use is based on the moment inequalities and careful estimating of constants in the integral form of the Povzner-type inequalities.

MWC 560. We review a diversity of manifestations of the propeller there. In these systems in a quiescent state the accretion onto a white dwarf from the strong enough wind of a companion star is suppressed by the magnetic field, and the hot component luminosity is low. Since the gas stored in the envelope eventually settles to the corotation radius the star-propeller reveals itself by long-time outbursts, short-time brightness dips, strong amplitude flickering, ejection of a powerful wind and jets. The envelope appears to be stratified and inhomogeneous because of the shock pum** of the propeller. At this stage, at which catastrophic transitions to the accretion stage and back are possible, the release of energy and angular momentum of the white dwarf is maximum. Using this property, we estimate the magnetic field strength of the white dwarfs in CH Cyg and MWC 560 to be of order $10^8$ G.
The most spectacular property of these stars - jets - is inherently connected with the propeller. This suggests hydromagnetic models of jet acceleration.

The relativistic jets of SS433 are outstanding for their optical thermal radiation. The radiation is produced by small clouds ($10^8$ cm) whose lifetime is about $10^3$ times larger than the gas-dynamical crushing time. We show that the clouds reside in thermal and dynamical balance as long as they collisionally interact with the wind of the supercritical accretion disk. The interaction is caused by the precessional movement of the jets and takes place only in the sweep-out zone. Beyond the sweep-out zone the interaction ceases and optical jets just terminate. The cloud magnetic field amplified in course of movement through a medium could play a role in containing a cloud. Thus, the clue to the uniqueness of the optical jets of SS433 is thought to be their precessional movement, which provides an opportunity for collisional interaction of the clouds with the wind.

Results of spectroscopy of unusual symbiotic star MWC560 are presented. The data have been obtained from autumn 1990 to spring 1993. The high velocity absorption line profiles demonstrate their origin in a jet, directed closely to the line of sight. These absorptions are variable at a time-scale less than one day and with an amplitude of about 10%. The fast variability of the absorption line profiles at 3 hours have been observed. An evidence of the opposite (second) jet has been found.
An estimates of the orbital inclination angle about 10 deg and the jets parameters have been derived. We have simulated the continuum spectrum from UV to IR in the two different states (high and low) of MWC560. The observed spectrum is formed in a M4-5III giant, a hot source and in an absorbing screen (the jet). The object luminousity 2 10^37 erg/s is mainly from the UV source, whose temperature and size are 20000 K and 4 10^11 cm. The hot source is probably a photosphere of a massive wind (2 10^-6 M of Sun/year) rising from inner area aroung the white dwarf.
We suppose that both the wind and jets are accelerated in magnetic field of the white dwarf, which accretes the gas from the giant wind as a propeller. The gas flows in accretion disk and is expelled from that by the rotating magnetic field. A sectorial structure of the outflow (jets) is formed. A surface magnetic field strength on the white dwarf is 3 10^8 G < B < 3 10^9 G, its rotational period is from 10-20 minutes to 3 hours.
