A novel mathematical approach has been developed to complete the inversion of the Biot-Savart law in one- and two-dimensional cases from measurements of the perpendicular component of the magnetic field using the well-developed Magneto-Optical Imaging technique. Our approach, especially in the 2D case, is provided in great detail to allow a straightforward implementation as opposed to those found in the literature. Our new approach also refines our previous results for the 1D case [Johansen et al., Phys. Rev. B 54, 16264 (1996)], and streamlines the method developed by Jooss et al. [Physica C 299, 215 (1998)] deemed as the most accurate if compared to that of Roth et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 65, 361 (1989)]. We also verify and streamline the iterative technique, which was developed following Laviano et al. [Supercond. Sci. Technol. 16, 71 (2002)] to account for in-plane magnetic fields caused by the bending of the applied magnetic field due to the demagnetising effect. After testing on magneto-optical images of a high quality YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting thin film, we show that the procedure employed is effective.

The glass-like vortex distribution in pulsed laser deposited YBCO thin films is observed by scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy and analysed for ordering after cooling in magnetic fields significantly smaller than the Earth's field. Autocorrelation calculations on this distribution show a weak short-range positional order, while Delaunay triangulation shows a near-complete lack of orientational order. The distribution of these vortices is finally characterised as an isotropic vortex glass. Abnormally closely spaced groups of vortices, which are statistically unlikely to occur, are observed above a threshold magnetic field. The origin of these groups is discussed, but will require further investigation.

The dynamics of transient current distributions in superconducting YBCO thin films were investigated during and immediately following an external field ramp, using high-speed (real-time) Magneto-Optical Imaging and calculation of dynamic current profiles. A number of qualitatively unique and previously unobserved features are seen in this novel analysis of the evolution of supercurrent during penetration. As magnetic field ramps up from zero, the dynamic current profile is characterized by strong peaks, the magnitude of which exceed the conventional critical current density (as determined from static current profiles). These peaks develop close to the sample edges, initially resembling screening currents but quickly growing in intensity as the external field increases. A discontinuity in field and current behaviour is newly observed, indicating a novel transition from increasing peak current toward relaxation behaviour. After this transition, the current peaks move toward the centre of the sample while reducing in intensity as magnetic vortices penetrate inward. This motion slows exponentially with time, with the current distribution in the long-time limit reducing to the expected Kim-model profile.

The classical problem of magnetic stripe domain behavior in films and plates with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is treated. Exact analytical results are derived for the stripe domain widths as function of applied perpendicular field, $H$, in the regime where the domain period becomes large. The stripe period diverges as $(H_c-H)^{-1/2}$, where $H_c$ is the critical (infinite period) field, an exact result confirming a previous conjecture. The magnetization approaches saturation as $(H_c-H)^{1/2}$, a behavior which compares excellently with experimental data obtained for a $4 μ$m thick ferrite garnet film. The exact analytical solution provides a new basis for precise characterization of uniaxial magnetic films and plates, illustrated by a simple way to measure the domain wall energy. The mathematical approach is applicable for similar analysis of a wide class of systems with competing interactions where a stripe domain phase is formed.

A large number of cosmological parameters have been suggested for obtaining information on the nature of dark energy. In this work, we study the efficacy of these different parameters in discriminating theoretical models of dark energy, using both currently available supernova (SNe) data, and simulations of future observations. We find that the current data does not put strong constraints on the nature of dark energy, irrespective of the cosmological parameter used. For future data, we find that the although deceleration parameter can accurately reconstruct some dark energy models, it is unable to discriminate between different models of dark energy, therefore limiting its usefulness. Physical parameters such as the equation of state of dark energy, or the dark energy density do a good job of both reconstruction and discrimination if the matter density is known to high accuracy. However, uncertainty in matter density reduces the efficacy of these parameters. A recently proposed parameter, Om(z), constructed from the first derivative of the SNe data, works very well in discriminating different theoretical models of dark energy, and has the added advantage of not being dependent on the value of matter density. Thus we find that a cosmological parameter constructed from the first derivative of the data, for which the theoretical models of dark energy are sufficiently distant from each other, and which is independent of the matter density, performs the best in reconstructing dark energy from SNe data.

A significant enhancement in the electromagnetic properties of MgB2 has been achieved through do** with various form of carbon (C). However, do** effect has been limited by the agglomeration of nano-sized dopants and the poor reactivity of C containing dopants with MgB2. Un-reacted dopants result in a reduction of superconductor volume. In this work, we demonstrate the advantages of carbohydrate do** over other dopants, resulting in an increase of in-field Jc by more than one order of magnitude without any degradation of self-field Jc. As there are numerous carbohydrates readily available this finding has significant ramifications not only for the fabrication of MgB2 but also for many C based compounds and composites.

The surface of thick (1 microm) multilayers has almost no holes compared to YBCO films. Critical current density (Jc) have been drastically increased up to a factor > 3 in 1 microm multilayered structures compared to YBCO films over entire temperature and applied magnetic filed range. Moreover, Jc values measured in thick multilayers are even larger than in much thinner YBCO films. The Jc and surface improvement have been analysed and attributed to growth conditions and corresponding structural peculiarities.

Fitting the momentum distribution photoemission spectra to the Voigt profile appears to be a robust procedure to purify the interaction effects from the experimental resolution. In application to Bi-2212 high-Tc cuprates, the procedure reveals the true scattering rate at low binding energies and temperatures, and, consequently, the true value of the elastic scattering. Reaching the minimal value ~ 16 meV, the elastic scattering does not reveal a systematic dependence on do** level, but is rather sensitive to impurity concentration, and can be explained by the forward scattering on out-of-plane impurities. The inelastic scattering is found to form well-defined quasiparticles with the quadratic and cubic energy dependence of the scattering rate above and below Tc, respectively. The observed energy-temperature asymmetry of the scattering rate is also discussed.

In magnetic fields applied within the angular range of the surface superconductivity state a magnetically anisotropic layered medium is created in structurally isotropic, sufficiently thick niobium films. Surface (Kulik) vortices residing in the superconducting sheaths on both main film surfaces in tilted fields are shown to undergo a decoupling transition from a coherent to an independent behavior, similar to the behavior observed for Giaever transformer. At the transition a feature in pinning properties is measured, which implies different pinning for the lattice of surface vortices coherently coupled through the normal layer and for two decoupled vortex arrays in the superconducting surface sheaths.

Magnetic measurements carried out on MgB_2 superconducting round wires have shown that the critical current density J_c(B_a) in wires sheathed by iron can be significantly higher than that in the same bare (unsheathed) wires over a wide applied magnetic field B_a range. The magnetic behavior is, however, strongly dependent on the magnetic history of the sheathed wires, as well as on the wire orientation with respect to the direction of the applied field. The behavior observed can be explained by magnetic interaction between the soft magnetic sheath and superconducting core, which can result in a redistribution of supercurrents in the flux filled superconductor. A phenomenological model explaining the observed behavior is proposed.

High quality bulk MgB2 exhibit a structure of voids and agglomeration of crystals on different length-scales. Because of this, the superconducting currents percolate between the voids in the ensuing structure. Magnetic measurements reveal that the superconducting currents circulate on at least three different length-scales, of ~1 micrometre, ~10 micrometre and whole of the sample (~millimetre). Each of these screenings contributes to the measured irreversible magnetic moment (Dm). The analysis of the field dependence of Dm for samples of subsequently decreasing size showed that the critical current obtained using the simple critical state model is erroneous. This leads to the artefact of the sample size-dependent critical current and irreversibility field. Our data analysis enables the separation of the contribution of each of the screening currents to Dm. The field dependence of each of the currents follows a stretched exponential form. The currents flowing around whole of the sample give a dominant contribution to Dm in the intermediate fields (1T < H < 4T at 20K) and they can be used to obtain the value of Jc from critical state model, which corresponds to the transport Jc.

The films were then in situ annealed at a temperature from 450 C to 800 C and an annealing time from 1 minute to 10 minutes. We found that the superconducting properties depend in a crucial way on the annealing conditions: temperature, heating rate and time. The best film with a thickness of ~600nm was obtained under the following annealing conditions: Tanneal=680-690 C, tanneal=1 min, heating rate= 38 C/min. The Tc onset of the film is 28K with a transition width of ~10K. The hysteresis loop of magnetic moment of the film indicates weak field dependence in high fields. Magneto-optical imaging of the film showed quite homogeneous magnetic flux penetration, indicating structural homogeneity. The films without annealing showed no superconductivity.

In these films a paramagnetic signal known as the paramagnetic Meissner effect has been observed. The experimental data in the films, which have strong pinning and high critical current densities (J_c ~ 2 \times 10^6 A/cm^2 at 77 K), are quantitatively shown to be highly consistent with the theoretical model proposed by Koshelev and Larkin [Phys. Rev. B 52, 13559 (1995)]. This finding indicates that the origin of the paramagnetic effect is ultimately associated with nucleation and inhomogeneous spatial redistribution of magnetic vortices in a sample which is cooled down in a magnetic field. It is also shown that the distribution of vortices is extremely sensitive to the interplay of film properties and the real experimental conditions of the measurements.

We have fabricated a series of iron-sheathed superconducting wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique from (MgB_2)_{1-x}:(Mg+2B)_x initial powder mixtures taken with different proportions, so that x varies from 0 to 1. It turned out that "ex-situ" prepared wire (x = 0) has considerable disadvantages compared to all the other wires in which "in-situ" assisted (0 < x < 1) or pure "in-situ" (x = 1) preparation was used due to weaker inter-grain connectivity. As a result, higher critical current densities J_c were measured over the entire range of applied magnetic fields B_a for all the samples with x > 0. Pinning of vortices in MgB_2 wires is shown to be due to grain boundaries. J_c(B_a) behavior is governed by an interplay between the transparency of grain boundaries and the amount of "pinning" grain boundaries. Differences between thermo-magnetic flux-jump instabilities in the samples and a possible threat to practical applications are also discussed.

A series of MgB_{2-x}(SiC)_{x/2} samples with x = 0 to 1.0 were fabricated using in-situ reaction process. The contraction of the lattice and depression of T_c with increasing SiC do** level remained rather small due to the counter-balanced effect of Si and C co-do**. The high level Si and C co-do** allowed the creation of intra-grain defects and highly dispersed nano-inclusions within the grains which can act as effective pinning centers for vortices, improving J_c behavior as a function of the applied magnetic field. The enhanced pinning is mainly attributable to the substitution-induced defects and a local structure fluctuations within grains. A pinning mechanism is proposed to account for different contributions of different defects in MgB_{2-x}(SiC)_{x/2} superconductors.

The magnetic shielding can provide a Meissner-like state in the superconducting core in applied magnetic fields up to ~1T. The maximum shielding fields are shown to correlate with the saturation fields of magnetization in Fe-sheaths. The shielding has been found to facilitate the appearance of an overcritical state, which is capable of achieving a critical current density (J_c) in the core which is larger than J_c in the same wire without the sheath by a factor of ~2. Other effects caused by the magnetic interaction between the sheath and the superconducting core are discussed.

We found that the FLL of a field-cooled state without driving forces is not in an equilibrium state. Results obtained for magnetic fields applied at $0^\circ$ and 30$^\circ$ relative to CuO$_2$ planes, show an enhancement of the elastic coupling of the films at driving current densities several orders of magnitude smaller than the critical one. Our results indicate that the FLL appears to be in a relatively ordered, metastable state after field cooling without driving forces.
