Exponential Dichotomy for Noninvertible Linear Difference Equations

Abstract:
In this article we study exponential dichotomies for noninvertible linear difference equations in finite dimensions. After giving the definition, we study the extent to which the projection $P(k)$ in a dichotomy is unique. For equations on $\mathbb{Z}$ it is unique but for equations on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ only its range is unique and for $\mathbb{Z}_-$ only its nullspace.

Here we strengthen Kalkbrenner's results and give a complete characterization of all possible projections.
Next we study the possibility of extending the dichotomy to a larger interval. We reproduce the results of P\" otzsche but also show exactly when the original projection remains unchanged.
Next we prove that the roughness theorem, well known for additive perturbations, holds for multiplicative perturbations also. The proof uses ideas of Zhou, Lu and Zhang.
Finally, following Ducrot, Magal and Seydi, we mention that the results by Palmer on finite time conditions on dichotomy for the invertible case can be extended to the noninvertible case.

Abstract:
We consider a nonautonomous system \[ \dot x=A(t)x+f(t,x,y),\quad \dot y = g(t,y)\] and give conditions under which there is a transformation of the form $H(t,x,y)=(x+h(t,x,y),y)$ taking its solutions onto the solutions of the partially linearized system \[ \dot x=A(t)x,\quad \dot y = g(t,y).\] Shi and Xiong \cite{SX} proved a special case where $g(t,y)$ was a linear function of $y$ and…

We consider a nonautonomous system \[ \dot x=A(t)x+f(t,x,y),\quad \dot y = g(t,y)\] and give conditions under which there is a transformation of the form $H(t,x,y)=(x+h(t,x,y),y)$ taking its solutions onto the solutions of the partially linearized system \[ \dot x=A(t)x,\quad \dot y = g(t,y).\] Shi and Xiong \cite{SX} proved a special case where $g(t,y)$ was a linear function of $y$ and $\dot x=A(t)x$ had an exponential dichotomy. Our assumptions on $A$ and $f$ are of the general form considered by Reinfelds and Steinberga \cite{RS}, which include many of the generalizations of Palmer's theorem proved by other authors. Inspired by the work of Shi and Xiong, we also prove H\" older continuity of $H$ and its inverse in $x$ and $y$. Again the proofs are given in the context of Reinfelds and Steinberga but we show what the results reduce to when $\dot x=A(t)x$ is assumed to have an exponential dichotomy. The paper is concluded with the discrete version of the results.

We present a learning-based method for extracting whistles of toothed whales (Odontoceti) in hydrophone recordings. Our method represents audio signals as time-frequency spectrograms and decomposes each spectrogram into a set of time-frequency patches. A deep neural network learns archetypical patterns (e.g., crossings, frequency modulated sweeps) from the spectrogram patches and predicts time-frequency peaks that are associated with whistles. We also developed a comprehensive method to synthesize training samples from background environments and train the network with minimal human annotation effort. We applied the proposed learn-from-synthesis method to a subset of the public Detection, Classification, Localization, and Density Estimation (DCLDE) 2011 workshop data to extract whistle confidence maps, which we then processed with an existing contour extractor to produce whistle annotations. The F1-score of our best synthesis method was 0.158 greater than our baseline whistle extraction algorithm (~25% improvement) when applied to common dolphin (Delphinus spp.) and bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) whistles.

We develop the Bohl spectrum for nonautonomous linear differential equation on a half line, which is a spectral concept that lies between the Lyapunov and the Sacker--Sell spectrum. We prove that the Bohl spectrum is given by the union of finitely many intervals, and we show by means of an explicit example that the Bohl spectrum does not coincide with the Sacker--Sell spectrum in general. We demonstrate for this example that any higher-order nonlinear perturbation is exponentially stable, although this not evident from the Sacker--Sell spectrum. We also analyze in detail situations in which the Bohl spectrum is identical to the Sacker-Sell spectrum.

Abstract:
Let $φ$ be the flow generated by a smooth vector field $X$ on a smooth closed manifold. We show that the Lipschitz shadowing property of $φ$ is equivalent to the structural stability of $X$ and that the Lipschitz periodic shadowing property of $φ$ is equivalent to the $Ω$-stability of $X$.
