In this paper we investigate the limit performance of Floating Gossip, a new, fully distributed Gossip Learning scheme which relies on Floating Content to implement location-based probabilistic evolution of machine learning models in an infrastructure-less manner. We consider dynamic scenarios where continuous learning is necessary, and we adopt a mean field approach to investigate the limit performance of Floating Gossip in terms of amount of data that users can incorporate into their models, as a function of the main system parameters. Different from existing approaches in which either communication or computing aspects of Gossip Learning are analyzed and optimized, our approach accounts for the compound impact of both aspects. We validate our results through detailed simulations, proving good accuracy. Our model shows that Floating Gossip can be very effective in implementing continuous training and update of machine learning models in a cooperative manner, based on opportunistic exchanges among moving users.

Nowadays, datacenters lean on a computer-centric approach based on monolithic servers which include all necessary hardware resources (mainly CPU, RAM, network and disks) to run applications. Such an architecture comes with two main limitations: (1) difficulty to achieve full resource utilization and (2) coarse granularity for hardware maintenance. Recently, many works investigated a resource-centric approach called disaggregated architecture where the datacenter is composed of self-content resource boards interconnected using fast interconnection technologies, each resource board including instances of one resource type. The resource-centric architecture allows each resource to be managed (maintenance, allocation) independently. LegoOS is the first work which studied the implications of disaggregation on the operating system, proposing to disaggregate the operating system itself. They demonstrated the suitability of this approach, considering mainly CPU and RAM resources. However, they didn't study the implication of disaggregation on network resources. We reproduced a LegoOS infrastructure and extended it to support disaggregated networking. We show that networking can be disaggregated following the same principles, and that classical networking optimizations such as DMA, DDIO or loopback can be reproduced in such an environment. Our evaluations show the viability of the approach and the potential of future disaggregated infrastructures.

Intel Page Modification Logging (PML) is a novel hardware feature for tracking virtual machine (VM) accessed memory pages. This task is essential in today's data centers since it allows, among others, checkpointing, live migration and working set size (WSS) estimation. Relying on the Xen hypervisor, this paper studies PML from three angles: power consumption, efficiency, and performance impact on user applications. Our findings are as follows. First, PML does not incur any power consumption overhead. Second, PML reduces by up to 10.18% both VM live migration and checkpointing time. Third, PML slightly reduces by up to 0.95% the performance degradation on applications incurred by live migration and checkpointing. Fourth, PML however does not allow accurate WSS estimation because read accesses are not tracked and hot pages cannot be identified. A naive extension of PML for addressing these limitations could lead to severe performance degradation (up to 34.8%) for the VM whose WSS is computed.
This paper presents Page Reference Logging (PRL), a smart extension of PML for allowing both read and write accesses to be tracked. It does this without impacting user VMs. The paper also presents a WSS estimation system which leverages PRL and shows how this algorithm can be integrated into a data center which implements memory overcommitment. We implement PRL and the WSS estimation system under Gem5, a very popular hardware simulator. The evaluation results validate the accuracy of PRL in the estimation of WSS. They also show that PRL incurs no performance degradation for user VMs.

We present an experimental study of the preferential concentration of sub-Kolmogorov inertial particles in active-grid-generated homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, characterized via Voronoï tessellations.
We show that the detection and quantification of clusters and voids is influenced by the intensity of the laser and high values of particles volume fraction $φ_v$. Different biases on the statistics of Voronoï cells are analyzed to improve the reliability of the detection and the robustness in the characterization of clusters and voids. We do this by adapting Big-Data techniques that allow to process the particle images up to 10 times faster than standard algorithms.
Finally, as preferential concentration is known to depend on multiple parameters, we performed experiments where one parameter was varied and all others were kept constant ($φ_v$, Reynolds number based on the Taylor length scale $Re_λ$, and residence time of the particles interacting with the turbulence). Our results confirm, in agreement with published work, that clustering increases with both $φ_v$ and $Re_λ$. On the other hand, we find new evidence that the mean size of clusters increases with $Re_λ$ but decreases with $φ_v$ and that the cluster settling velocity is strongly affected by $Re_λ$ up to the maximum value studied here, $Re_λ= 250$.

We extensively observed it for a total for 38 nights; on 26 of them observations were done quasi-simultaneously in B, V, R and I bands (totaling 113 light curves), with an average sampling interval of around 8 minutes. BL Lacertae showed significant variations on hour-like timescales in a total of 19 nights in different optical bands. We did not find any evidence for periodicities or characteristic variability time-scales in the light curves.
The intranight variability amplitude is generally greater at higher frequencies and decreases as the source flux increases.
We found spectral variations in BL Lacertae in the sense that the optical spectrum becomes flatter as the flux increases but in several flaring states deviates from the linear trend suggesting different jet components contributing to the emission at different times.

We report results from a 1 week multi-wavelength campaign to monitor the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 (on December 9-16, 2009). In the radio bands the source shows rapid (~ (0.5-1.5) day) intra-day variability with peak amplitudes of up to ~ 10 %. The variability at 2.8 cm leads by about 1 day the variability at 6 cm and 11 cm. This time lag and more rapid variations suggests an intrinsic contribution to the source's intraday variability at 2.8 cm, while at 6 cm and 11 cm interstellar scintillation (ISS) seems to predominate. Large and quasi-sinusoidal variations of ~ 0.8 mag were detected in the V, R and I-bands. The X-ray data (0.2-10 keV) do not reveal significant variability on a 4 day time scale, favoring reprocessed inverse-Compton over synchrotron radiation in this band. The characteristic variability time scales in radio and optical bands are similar. A quasi-periodic variation (QPO) of 0.9 - 1.1 days in the optical data may be present, but if so it is marginal and limited to 2.2 cycles. Cross-correlations between radio and optical are discussed. The lack of a strong radio-optical correlation indicates different physical causes of variability (ISS at long radio wavelengths, source intrinsic origin in the optical), and is consistent with a high jet opacity and a compact synchrotron component peaking at ~= 100 GHz in an ongoing very prominent flux density outburst. For the campaign period, we construct a quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distribution (SED), including gamma-ray data from the FERMI satellite. We obtain lower limits for the relativistic Doppler-boosting of delta >= 12-26, which for a BL\,Lac type object, is remarkably high.

VERITAS, a ground-based gamma-ray observatory, detected VHE gamma rays from RBS 0413 with a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations (sigma) and a gamma-ray flux of (1.5 \pm 0.6stat \pm 0.7syst) \times 10^(-8) photons m^(-2) s^(-1) (\sim 1% of the Crab Nebula flux) above 250 GeV. The observed spectrum can be described by a power law with a photon index of 3.18 \pm 0.68stat \pm 0.30syst. Contemporaneous observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected HE gamma rays from RBS 0413 with a statistical significance of more than 9 sigma, a power-law photon index of 1.57 \pm 0.12stat +0.11sys -0.12sys and a gamma-ray flux between 300 MeV and 300 GeV of (1.64 \pm 0.43stat +0.31sys -0.22sys) \times 10^(-5) photons m^(-2) s^(-1). We present the results from Fermi-LAT and VERITAS, including a spectral energy distribution modeling of the gamma-ray, quasi-simultaneous X-ray (Swift-XRT), ultraviolet (Swift-UVOT) and R-band optical (MDM) data. We find that, if conditions close to equipartition are required, both the combined synchrotron self-Compton/external-Compton and the lepto-hadronic models are preferred over a pure synchrotron self-Compton model.

We present multiwavelength observations of the ultraluminous blazar-type radio loud quasar PKS 0528+134 in quiescence during the period July to December 2009. Significant flux variability on a time scale of several hours was found in the optical regime, accompanied by a weak trend of spectral softening with increasing flux. We suggest that this might be the signature of a contribution from the accretion disk at the blue end of the optical spectrum. The optical flux is weakly polarized with rapid variations of the degree and direction of polarization, while the polarization of the 43 GHz radio core remains steady. Optical spectropolarimetry suggests a trend of increasing degree of polarization with increasing wavelength, providing additional evidence for an accretion disc contribution towards the blue end of the optical spectrum. We constructed four SEDs indicating that even in the quiescent state, the bolometric luminosity of PKS 0528+134 is dominated by its gamma-ray emission. A leptonic single-zone jet model produced acceptable fits to the SEDs with contributions to the high-energy emission from synchrotron self-Compton radiation and Comptonization of direct accretion disk emission. Fit parameters close to equipartition were obtained. The moderate variability on long time scales implies the existence of on-going particle acceleration, while the observed optical polarization variability seems to point towards a turbulent acceleration process. Turbulent particle acceleration at stationary features along the jet therefore appears to be a viable possibility for the quiescent state of PKS 0528+134.
