The atomic structure, electronic structure and physical properties of $(TiZrNbCu)_{(1-x)}Ni_x$ (x $\leq$ 0.5) metallic glasses (MG) were studied in both the high-entropy (0<x<0.35) and the higher Ni concentration range (x $\geq$ 0.35). Atomic structure studies performed with X-ray diffraction and synchrotron powder diffraction provided average atomic volumes, structure factors, radial distribution functions, coordination numbers and packing densities. Electronic structure studies performed using photoemission spectroscopy and low-temperature specific heat provided information about the electronic density of states within the valence band and at the Fermi level and also about interatomic bonding and atomic vibrations (from the Debye temperature and the boson peak). Variations of both atomic structure and electronic structure with x showed a clear change for x $\geq$ 0.35, which corresponds to a valence electron number $\geq$ 7.4. All physical properties, namely thermal stability parameters, Debye temperatures, boson peaks, magnetic, elastic and electronic transport properties change their concentration-dependence for x$\geq$ 0.35. The results are compared with those for binary and ternary MGs of the same elements.

The amorphous state of all samples was verified by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD indicated a probable change in local atomic arrangements, i.e. short-range-order (SRO) for x$\geq$0.35. Simultaneously, thermal parameters, such as the first crystallization temperature $T_{x}$ and the liquidus temperature showed a tendency to saturate for x$\geq$0.35 . The same tendency also appeared in the magnetic susceptibility $χ_{exp}$ and the linear term in the low temperature specific heat γ. The Debye temperatures and Youngs moduli also tend to saturate for x$\geq$0.35. These unusual changes in SRO and all properties within the amorphous phase seem correlated with the change of valence electron number (VEC) on increasing x.

A correlation between the change in magnetic susceptibility (Δ\c{hi}exp) upon crystallization of Cu-Zr, Hf metallic glasses (MG) with their glass forming ability (GFA) observed recently is found to apply to Cu-Ti and Zr-Ni alloys, too. In particular, a small Δ\c{hi}exp , which reflects similar electronic structures, ES, of glassy and corresponding crystalline alloys, corresponds to high GFA. Here, we studied Δ\c{hi}exp in five Cu-Ti and four Cu-Zr and Ni-Zr MGs. The fully crystalline final state of all alloys was verified from X-ray diffraction patterns. The variation of GFA with composition in Cu-Ti, Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf MGs was established from the variation of the corresponding critical casting thickness, dc. Due to the absence of data for dc in Ni-Zr MGs their GFA was described by using empirical criteria, such as the reduced glass transition temperature. A very good correlation between Δ\c{hi}exp and dc (and/or other criteria for GFA) was observed for all alloys studied. The correlation between the ES and GFA showed up best for Cu-Zr and NiZr2 alloys where direct data for the change in ES (ΔES) upon crystallization are available. The applicability of the Δ\c{hi}exp (ΔES) criterion for high GFA (which provides a simple way to select the compositions with high GFA) to other metal-metal MGs (including ternary and multicomponent bulk MGs) is briefly discussed.

A comprehensive study of selected properties of four (TiZrNbCu)_1-xNi_x (x \le 0.25) amorphous high entropy alloys (a-HEA) has been performed. The samples were ribbons about 20 \mum thick and their fully amorphous state was verified by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. The surface morphology, precise composition and the distribution of components were studied with a Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) attachment. The properties selected were the melting temperature (T_m), the low temperature specific heat (LTSH), the magnetic susceptibility χ_exp and the Young^,s modulus (E). Whereas LTSH and χ_exp were measured for the as-cast samples, E was measured both for as-cast samples and relaxed samples (after a short anneal close to the glass transition temperature). The LTSH showed that the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, N_0(E_F), decreases with increasing x, whereas the Debye temperature (θ_D) increases with x. This is similar to what is observed in binary and ternary amorphous alloys of early transition metals (TE) with late transition metals (TL) and indicates that N_0(E_F) is dominated by the d-electrons of the TE. The LTSH also showed the absence of superconductivity down to 1.8K and indicated the emergence of the Boson peak above 4K in all alloys. The free-electron like paramagnetic contribution to χ_exp also decreases with x, whereas E, like θ_D, increases with x, indicating enhanced interatomic bonding on addition of Ni. The applicability of the rule of mixtures to these and other similar HEAs is briefly discussed.

Using this methodology, which is quite general, we demonstrate that Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ is an almost realization of a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet but with relatively weak coupling of 7.18(5) meV.

Understanding the formation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) in metallic systems and finding a reliable criterion for selection of BMG compositions are among the most important issues in condensed matter physics and material science. Using the results of magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on both amorphous and crystallized Cu-Hf alloys (30-70 at% Cu) we find a correlation between the difference in magnetic susceptibilities of corresponding glassy and crystalline alloys and the variation in the glass forming ability (GFA) in these alloys. Since the same correlation can be inferred from data for the properties associated with the electronic structure of Cu-Zr alloys, it seems quite general and may apply to other glassy alloys based on early and late transition metals. This correlation is plausible from the free energy considerations and provides a simple way to select the compositions with high GFA.

Diluted magnetic semiconductors possessing intrinsic static magnetism at high temperatures represent a promising class of multifunctional materials with high application potential in spintronics and magneto-optics. In the hexagonal Fe-doped diluted magnetic oxide, 6H-BaTiO$_{3-δ}$, room-temperature ferromagnetism has been previously reported. Ferromagnetism is broadly accepted as an intrinsic property of this material, despite its unusual dependence on do** concentration and processing conditions. However, the here reported combination of bulk magnetization and complementary in-depth local-probe electron spin resonance and muon spin relaxation measurements, challenges this conjecture. While a ferromagnetic transition occurs around 700 K, it does so only in additionally annealed samples and is accompanied by an extremely small average value of the ordered magnetic moment. Furthermore, several additional magnetic instabilities are detected at lower temperatures. These coincide with electronic instabilities of the Fe-doped 3C-BaTiO$_{3-δ}$ pseudocubic polymorph. Moreover, the distribution of iron dopants with frozen magnetic moments is found to be non-uniform. Our results demonstrate that the intricate static magnetism of the hexagonal phase is not intrinsic, but rather stems from sparse strain-induced pseudocubic regions. We point out the vital role of internal strain in establishing defect ferromagnetism in systems with competing structural phases.

We present the investigation of a monoclinic compound SeCuO3 using x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, torque and electron-spin-resonance (ESR). Structurally based analysis suggests that SeCuO3 can be considered as a 3D network of tetramers. The values of intra-tetramer exchange interactions are extracted from the temperature dependence of the susceptibility and amount to ~200 K. The inter-tetramer coupling leads to the development of long-range antiferromagnetic order at TN = 8 K. An unusual temperature dependence of the effective g-tensors is observed, accompanied with a rotation of macroscopic magnetic axes. We explain this unique observation as due to site-selective quantum correlations.

We report a detailed single crystal investigation of a magnetoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3 using dc magnetization and ac susceptibility along the three principal directions [100], [110] and [111]. We have observed that in small magnetic fields two magnetic transitions occur, one at Tc = 57 K and the second one at TN = 58 K. At Tc the non-linear susceptibility reveals the emergence of the ferromagnetic component and below Tc the magnetization measurements show the splitting between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled regimes. Above 1000 Oe the magnetization saturates and the system is in a single domain state. The temperature dependence of the saturation below Tc can be well described by m(T) = m(0)[1 - (T/Tc)^2]^β, with m(0) = 0.56 (mu)B/Cu, corresponding to the 3-up-1-down configuration. The dielectric constant measured on a thin single crystal shows a systematic deviation below the transition, indicating an intrinsic magnetoelectric effect.

Single crystals of the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) obtained from diethyl ether (ether) and carbon disulfide (CS2) were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, IR, EPR and SQUID magnetization techniques. The X-ray structural analysis and IR spectra showed that the DPPH form crystallized from ether (DPPH1) is solvent free, whereas that one obtained from CS2 (DPPH2) is a solvate of the composition 4DPPH.CS2. Principal values of the g-tensor were estimated by the X-band EPR spectroscopy at room and low (10 K) temperatures. Magnetization studies revealed the presence of antiferromagnetically coupled dimers in both types of crystals. However, the way of dimerization as well as the strength of exchange couplings are different in the two DPPH samples, which is in accord with their crystal structures. The obtained results improved parameters accuracy and enabled better understanding of properties of DPPH as a standard sample in the EPR spectrometry.

Magnetic dynamics of a bulk ferromagnet, a new single crystalline compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6, was studied by ac susceptibility and the related techniques. Very large Arrhenius activation energy of 17.2 meV (201 K) and long attempt time (2x10^(-4)s) span the full spectrum of magnetic dynamics inside a convenient frequency window, offering a rare opportunity for general studies of magnetic dynamics. Within the experimental window the ac susceptibility data build almost ideally semicircular Cole-Cole plots. Comprehensive study of experimental dynamic hysteresis loops of the compound is presented and interpreted within a simple thermal-activation-assisted spin lattice relaxation model for spin reversal. Quantitative agreement between the experimental results and the model's prediction for dynamic coercive field is achieved by assuming the central physical quantity, the Debye relaxation rate, to depend on frequency, as well as on the applied field strength and sample temperature. Cross-over between minor- to major hysteresis loops is carefully analyzed. Low-frequency limitations of the model, relying on domain wall pinning effects, are experimentally detected and appropriately discussed.

Pronounced anisotropy of magnetic properties and complex magnetic order of a new oxi-halide compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6 has been investigated by powder and single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization and ac susceptibility techniques. Anisotropy of susceptibility extends far into the paramagnetic temperature range. A principal source of anisotropy are anisotropic properties of the involved octahedrally coordinated single Co(2+) ions, as confirmed by angular-overlap-model calculations presented in this work. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order sets in at TN=34 K. Propagation vector is strongly temperature dependent reaching k1=(0.9458(6), 0, 0.6026(5)) at 30 K. A transition to a ferrimagnetic structure with k2=0 takes place at TC=27 K. Magnetically ordered phase is characterized by very unusual anisotropy as well: while M-H scans along b-axis reveals spectacularly rectangular but otherwise standard ferromagnetic hysteresis loops, M-H studies along other two principal axes are perfectly reversible, revealing very sharp spin flop (or spin flip) transitions, like in a standard antiferromagnet (or metamagnet). Altogether, the observed magnetic phenomenology is interpreted as an evidence of competing magnetic interactions permeating the system, first of all of the single ion anisotropy energy and the exchange interactions. Different coordinations of the Co(2+)-ions involved in the low-symmetry C2/c structure of Co7(TeO3)4Br6 render the exchange-interaction network very complex by itself. Temperature dependent changes in the magnetic structure, together with an abrupt emergence of a ferromagnetic component, are ascribed to continual spin reorientations described by a multi-component, but yet unknown, spin Hamiltonian.

By fitting the exactly derived magnetization expression to the measured magnetization data, the axial zero-field splitting parameter, D, has been calculated. Nanocrystalline Al-doped nickel ferrite powders have been synthesized by sol-gel auto-ignition method and the effect of non-magnetic aluminum content on the structural and magnetic properties has been studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the powders obtained are single phase with inverse spinel structure. The calculated grain sizes from XRD data have been verified using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM photographs show that the powders consist of nanometer-sized grains. It was observed that the characteristic grain size decreases from 29 to 6 nm as the non-magnetic Al content increases, which was attributed to the influence of non-magnetic Al concentration on the grain size. Magnetic hysteresis loops were measured at room temperature with a maximum applied magnetic field of 1T. As aluminum content increases, the measured magnetic hysteresis curves become more and more narrow and the saturation magnetization and remanent magnetization both decreased. The reduction of agnetization compared to bulk is a consequence of spin non-collinearity. Further reduction of magnetization with increase of aluminum content is caused by non-magnetic Al^{3+} ions and weakened interaction between sublattices. This, as well as the decrease in hysteresis was understood in terms of the decrease in particle size.

The magnetization processes in binary magnetic/nonmagnetic amorphous alloy Hf_{57}Fe_{43} are investigated by the detailed measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops, temperature dependence of magnetization, relaxation of magnetization and magnetic ac susceptibility, including a nonlinear term. Blocking of magnetic moments at lower temperatures is accompanied with the slow relaxation of magnetization and magnetic hysteresis loops. All of the observed properties are explained with the superparamagnetic behaviour of the single domain magnetic clusters inside the nonmagnetic host, their blocking by the anisotropy barriers and thermal fluctuation over the barriers accompanied by relaxation of magnetization. From magnetic viscosity analysis based on thermal relaxation over the anisotropy barriers it is found out that magnetic clusters occupy the characteristic volume from 25 up to 200 nm3 . The validity of the superparamagnetic model of Hf_{57}Fe_{43} is based on the concentration of iron in the Hf_{100-x}Fe_{43} system that is just below the threshold for the long range magnetic ordering. This work throws more light on magnetic behaviour of other amorphous alloys, too.
