Supervised learning has gone beyond the expected risk minimization framework. Central to most of these developments is the introduction of more general aggregation functions for losses incurred by the learner. In this paper, we turn towards online learning under expert advice. Via easily justified assumptions we characterize a set of reasonable loss aggregation functions as quasi-sums. Based upon this insight, we suggest a variant of the Aggregating Algorithm tailored to these more general aggregation functions. This variant inherits most of the nice theoretical properties of the AA, such as recovery of Bayes' updating and a time-independent bound on quasi-sum regret. Finally, we argue that generalized aggregations express the attitude of the learner towards losses.

Abstract:
Motivated by solving the constraint equations in the evolutionary form suggested by Rácz, we propose a family of asymptotically flat initial data sets which are "asymptotically spherically symmetric" at infinity. Within this family, we obtain Penrose-like energy estimates and establish the existence of solutions for the constraint equations in the spherical symmetric and totally umbilic cases.

The rigidity of the Riemannian positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds states that the total mass of such a manifold is zero if and only if the manifold is isometric to the hyperbolic space. This leads to study the stability of this statement, that is, if the total mass of an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold is almost zero, is this manifold close to the hyperbolic space in any way? Motivated by the work of Huang, Lee and Sormani for asymptotically flat graphical manifolds with respect to intrinsic flat distance, we show the intrinsic flat stability of the positive mass theorem for a class of asymptotically hyperbolic graphical manifolds by adapting the positive answer to this question provided by Huang, Lee and the third named author.

Mixable loss functions are of fundamental importance in the context of prediction with expert advice in the online setting since they characterize fast learning rates. By re-interpreting properness from the point of view of differential geometry, we provide a simple geometric characterization of mixability for the binary and multi-class cases: a proper loss function $\ell$ is $η$-mixable if and only if the superpredition set $\textrm{spr}(η\ell)$ of the scaled loss function $η\ell$ slides freely inside the superprediction set $\textrm{spr}(\ell_{\log})$ of the log loss $\ell_{\log}$, under fairly general assumptions on the differentiability of $\ell$. Our approach provides a way to treat some concepts concerning loss functions (like properness) in a ''coordinate-free'' manner and reconciles previous results obtained for mixable loss functions for the binary and the multi-class cases.

In 2015, Mantoulidis and Schoen constructed $3$-dimensional asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature whose ADM mass can be made arbitrarily close to the optimal value of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality, while the intrinsic geometry of the outermost minimal surface can be ``far away'' from being round. The resulting manifolds, called extensions, are geometrically not ``close'' to a spatial Schwarzschild manifold. This suggests instability of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality. Their construction was later adapted to $n+1$ dimensions by Cabrera Pacheco and Miao. In recent papers by Alaee, Cabrera Pacheco, and Cederbaum and by Cabrera Pacheco, Cederbaum, and McCormick, a similar construction was performed for asymptotically Euclidean electrically charged Riemannian manifolds and for asymptotically hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds, respectively, obtaining $3$-dimensional extensions.
This paper combines and generalizes all the aforementioned results by constructing suitable asymptotically hyperbolic or asymptotically Euclidean extensions with electric charge in $n+1$ dimensions for $n\geq2$. We study in detail the sub-extremality of these manifolds, consider the so far unstudied case of extremality in extensions with electric charge and allow more general conditions for the metric of our extensions.
Besides suggesting instability of a naturally conjecturally generalized Riemannian Penrose Inequality, the constructed extensions give insights into an ad hoc generalized notion of Bartnik mass, similar to the Bartnik mass estimate for minimal surfaces proven by Mantoulidis and Schoen via their extensions, and unifying the Bartnik mass estimates in the various scenarios mentioned above.

The elastic angular distributions were analyzed using a phenomenological Woods-Saxon potential and a double folding Sao Paulo potential and the energy dependence was extracted. Angular distributions from two inelastic peaks were compared with coupled channel calculations using reduced transition probabilities available in the literature. The energy dependence of the two interaction potential models show a similar trend in the region of the Coulomb barrier. Dispersion relation calculation demonstrates the presence of the breakup threshold anomaly proposed for weakly bound systems.

We present a quasi-local version of the stability of the positive mass theorem. We work with the Brown--York quasi-local mass as it possesses positivity and rigidity properties, and therefore the stability of this rigidity statement can be studied. Specifically, we ask if the Brown--York mass of the boundary of some compact manifold is close to zero, must the manifold be close to a Euclidean domain in some sense?
Here we consider a class of compact $n$-manifolds with boundary that can be realized as graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and establish the following. If the Brown--York mass of the boundary of such a compact manifold is small, then the manifold is close to a Euclidean hyperplane with respect to the Federer--Fleming flat distance.

Remarkably, this procedure allowed them to compute the Bartnik mass in this so-called minimal case; the Bartnik mass is a notion of quasi-local mass in General Relativity which is very challenging to compute. In this survey, we describe the Mantoulidis-Schoen construction, its impact and influence in subsequent research related to Bartnik mass estimates when the minimality assumption is dropped, and its adaptation to other settings of interest in General Relativity.

By works of Schoen-Yau and Gromov-Lawson any Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and diffeomorphic to a torus is isometric to a flat torus. Gromov conjectured subconvergence of tori with respect to a weak Sobolev type metric when the scalar curvature goes to $0$. We prove flat and intrinsic flat subconvergence to a flat torus for noncollapsing sequences of $3$-dimensional tori $M_j$ that can be realized as graphs of certain functions defined over flat tori satisfying a uniform upper diameter bound and scalar curvature bounds of the form $R_{g_{M_j}} \geq -1/j$. We also show that the volume of the manifolds of the convergent subsequence converges to the volume of the limit space. We do so adapting results of Huang-Lee, Huang-Lee-Sormani and Allen-Perales-Sormani. Furthermore, our results also hold when the condition on the scalar curvature of a torus $(M, g_M)$ is replaced by a bound on the quantity $-\int_T \min\{R_{g_M},0\} d{\mbox{vol}_{g_T}}$, where $M=\mbox{graph}(f)$, $f: T \to \mathbb R$ and $(T,g_T)$ is a flat torus. Using arguments developed by Alaee, McCormick and the first named author after this work was completed, our results hold for dimensions $n \geq 4$ as well.

The elastic angular distributions are analyzed with a four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) calculation, which considers $^9$Be as a three-body projectile ($α$ + $α$ + n). An optical model analysis using the São Paulo potential is also shown for comparison. The CDCC analysis shows that the coupling to the continuum part of the spectrum is important for the agreement with experimental data even at energies around the Coulomb barrier, suggesting that breakup is an important process at low energies. At the highest incident energies, two inelastic peaks are observed at 1.19(5) and 2.41(5) MeV. Coupled-channels (CC) calculations using a rotational model confirm that the first inelastic peak corresponds to the excitation of the 2$_1^+$ state in $^{120}$Sn, while the second one likely corresponds to the excitation of the 3$_1^-$ state.

The Bartnik mass is a quasi-local mass tailored to asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature. From the perspective of general relativity, these model time-symmetric domains obeying the dominant energy condition without a cosmological constant. There is a natural analogue of the Bartnik mass for asymptotically hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds with a negative lower bound on scalar curvature which model time-symmetric domains obeying the dominant energy condition in the presence of a negative cosmological constant.
Following the ideas of Mantoulidis and Schoen [2016], of Miao and Xie [2016], and of joint work of Miao and the authors [2017], we construct asymptotically hyperbolic extensions of minimal and constant mean curvature (CMC) Bartnik data while controlling the total mass of the extensions. We establish that for minimal surfaces satisfying a stability condition, the Bartnik mass is bounded above by the conjectured lower bound coming from the asymptotically hyperbolic Riemannian Penrose inequality. We also obtain estimates for such a hyperbolic Bartnik mass of CMC surfaces with positive Gaussian curvature.

The elastic (non-capture) break-up cross section is important at energies close and above the Coulomb barrier and increases the reaction cross sections.
