We consider a population growth model given by a two-type continuous-state branching process with immigration and competition, introduced by Ma. We study the relative frequency of one of the types in the population when the total mass is forced to be constant at a dense set of times. The resulting process is described as the solution to an SDE, which we call the culled frequency process, generalizing the $Λ$-asymmetric frequency process introduced by Caballero et al. We obtain conditions for the culled frequency process to have a moment dual and show that it is given by a branching-coalescing continuous-time Markov chain that describes the genealogy of the two-type CBI with competition. Finally, we obtain a large population limit of the culled frequency process, resulting in a deterministic ordinary differential equation (ODE). Two particular cases of the limiting ODE are studied to determine if general two-type branching mechanisms and general Malthusians can lead to the coexistence of the two types in the population.

We study the problem of community detection in a general version of the block spin Ising model featuring M groups, a model inspired by the Curie-Weiss model of ferromagnetism in statistical mechanics. We solve the general problem of identifying any number of groups with any possible coupling constants. Up to now, the problem was only solved for the specific situation with two groups of identical size and identical interactions. Our results can be applied to the most realistic situations, in which there are many groups of different sizes and different interactions. In addition, we give an explicit algorithm that permits the reconstruction of the structure of the model from a sample of observations based on the comparison of empirical correlations of the spin variables, thus unveiling easy applications of the model to real-world voting data and communities in biology.

Motivated by the question of the impact of selective advantage in populations with skewed reproduction mechanims, we study a Moran model with selection. We assume that there are two types of individuals, where the reproductive success of one type is larger than the other. The higher reproductive success may stem from either more frequent reproduction, or from larger numbers of offspring, and is encoded in a measure $Λ$ for each of the two types. Our approach consists of constructing a $Λ$-asymmetric Moran model in which individuals of the two populations compete, rather than considering a Moran model for each population. Under certain conditions, that we call the "partial order of adaptation", we can couple these measures. This allows us to construct the central object of this paper, the $Λ-$asymmetric ancestral selection graph, leading to a pathwise duality of the forward in time $Λ$-asymmetric Moran model with its ancestral process. Interestingly, the construction also provides a connection to the theory of optimal transport. We apply the ancestral selection graph in order to obtain scaling limits of the forward and backward processes, and note that the frequency process converges to the solution of an SDE with discontinous paths. Finally, we derive a Griffiths representation for the generator of the SDE and use it to find a semi-explicit formula for the probability of fixation of the less beneficial of the two types.

We consider a population constituted by two types of individuals; each of them can produce offspring in two different islands (as a particular case the islands can be interpreted as active or dormant individuals). We model the evolution of the population of each type using a two-type Feller diffusion with immigration, and we study the frequency of one of the types, in each island, when the total population size in each island is forced to be constant at a dense set of times. This leads to the solution of a SDE which we call the asymmetric two-island frequency process. We derive properties of this process and obtain a large population limit when the total size of each island tends to infinity. Additionally, we compute the fluctuations of the process around its deterministic limit. We establish conditions under which the asymmetric two-island frequency process has a moment dual. The dual is a continuous-time two-dimensional Markov chain that can be interpreted in terms of mutation, branching, pairwise branching, coalescence, and a novel mixed selection-migration term. Also, we conduct a stability analysis of the limiting deterministic dynamical system and present some numerical results to study fixation and a new form of balancing selection. When restricting to the seedbank model, we observe that some combinations of the parameters lead to balancing selection. Besides finding yet another way in which genetic reservoirs increase the genetic variability, we find that if a population that sustains a seedbank competes with one that does not, the seed producers will have a selective advantage if they reproduce faster, but will not have a selective disadvantage if they reproduce slower: their worst case scenario is balancing selection.

We introduce a new non-zero-sum game of optimal stop** with asymmetric exercise opportunities. Given a stochastic process modelling the value of an asset, one player observes and can act on the process continuously, while the other player can act on it only periodically at independent Poisson arrival times. The first one to stop receives a reward, different for each player, while the other one gets nothing. We study how each player balances the maximisation of gains against the maximisation of the likelihood of stop** before the opponent. In such a setup, driven by a Lévy process with positive jumps, we not only prove the existence, but also explicitly construct a Nash equilibrium with values of the game written in terms of the scale function. Numerical illustrations with put-option payoffs are also provided to study the behaviour of the players' strategies as well as the quantification of the value of available exercise opportunities.

[24], the stop** region that characterizes the optimal stop** time is either a half-line or an interval. The objective of this paper is to obtain explicit expressions of the stop** and continuation regions and the value function, focusing on spectrally positive and negative cases. To this end, we compute the identities related to the first Poisson arrival time to an interval via the scale function and then apply those identities to the computation of the optimal strategies. We also discuss the convergence of the optimal solutions to those in the continuous observation case as the rate of observation increases to infinity. Numerical experiments are also provided.

We consider matrix-valued processes described as solutions to stochastic differential equations of very general form. We study the family of the empirical measure-valued processes constructed from the corresponding eigenvalues. We show that the family indexed by the size of the matrix is tight under very mild assumptions on the coefficients of the initial SDE. We characterize the limiting distributions of its subsequences as solutions to an integral equation. We use this result to study some universality classes of random matrix flows. These generalize the classical results related to Dyson Brownian motion and squared Bessel particle systems. We study some new phenomenons as the existence of the generalized Marchenko-Pastur distributions supported on the real line. We also introduce universality classes related to generalized geometric matrix Brownian motions and Jacobi processes. Finally we study, under some conditions, the convergence of the empirical measure-valued process of eigenvalues associated to matrix flows to the law of a free diffusion.

We consider the multi-refraction strategies in two equivalent versions of the optimal dividend problem in the dual (spectrally positive Lévy) model. The first problem is a variant of the bail-out case where both dividend payments and capital injections must be absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The second is an extension of Avanzi et al. [4] where a strategy is a combination of two absolutely continuous dividend payments with different upper bounds and different transaction costs. In both problems, it is shown to be optimal to refract the process at two thresholds, with the optimally controlled process being the multi-refracted Lévy process recently studied by Czarna et al. Under some mild conditions on the covariance function associated to $Y^{(n)}$, we prove that the process $μ^{(n)}$ converges in probability to a deterministic limit $μ$, in the topology of uniform convergence over compact sets. We show that the process $μ$ is characterized by its Cauchy transform, which is a rescaling of the solution of a Burgers' equation. Our results extend those of Rogers and Shi for the free Brownian motion and Pardo et al. for the non-commutative fractional Brownian motion when $H>1/2$ whose arguments use strongly the non-collision of the eigenvalues. Our methodology does not require the latter property and in particular explains the remaining case of the non-commutative fractional Brownian motion for $H< 1/2$ which, up to our knowledge, was unknown.

In this paper, we introduce a family of processes with values on the nonnegative integers that describes the dynamics of populations where individuals are allowed to have different types of interactions. The types of interactions that we consider include pairwise interaction, such as competition, annihilation and cooperation; and interaction among several individuals that can be considered as catastrophes. We call such families of processes \textit{branching processes with interactions}. Our aim is to study their long term behaviour under a specific regime of the pairwise interaction parameters that we introduce as {\it subcritical cooperative regime}. Under such regime, we prove that a process in this class comes down from infinity and has a moment dual which turns out to be a jump-diffusion that can be thought as the evolution of the frequency of a trait or phenotype and whose parameters have a classical interpretation in terms of population genetics. The moment dual is an important tool for characterizing the stationary distribution of branching processes with interactions whenever such distribution exists but it is an interesting object on its own right.

The principal problem is the modest display of detection systems based on learning algorithms under the constraints imposed by real environments. This article focuses on the machine learning approach for network intrusion detection in batch and data stream environments. First, we propose and describe three variants of KDD99 dataset preprocessing including attribute selection. Secondly, a thoroughly experimentation is performed from evaluating and comparing representative batch learning algorithms on the variants obtained from KDD99 pre processing. Finally, since network traffic is a constant data stream, which can present concept drifting with high rate of false positive, along with the fact that there are not many researches addressing intrusion detection on streaming environments, lead us to make a comparison of various representative data stream classification algorithms. This research allows determining the algorithms that better perform on the proposed variants of KDD99 for both batch and data stream environments.

Network intrusion detection is one of the most visible uses for Big Data analytics. One of the main problems in this application is the constant rise of new attacks. This scenario, characterized by the fact that not enough labeled examples are available for the new classes of attacks is hardly addressed by traditional machine learning approaches. New findings on the capabilities of Zero-Shot learning (ZSL) approach makes it an interesting solution for this problem because it has the ability to classify instances of unseen classes. ZSL has inherently two stages: the attribute learning and the inference stage. In this paper we propose a new algorithm for the attribute learning stage of ZSL. The idea is to learn new values for the attributes based on decision trees (DT). Our results show that based on the rules extracted from the DT a better distribution for the attribute values can be found. We also propose an experimental setup for the evaluation of ZSL on network intrusion detection (NID).

With the massive data challenges nowadays and the rapid growing of technology, stream mining has recently received considerable attention. To address the large number of scenarios in which this phenomenon manifests itself suitable tools are required in various research fields. Instance-based data stream algorithms generally employ the Euclidean distance for the classification task underlying this problem. A novel way to look into this issue is to take advantage of a more flexible metric due to the increased requirements imposed by the data stream scenario. In this paper we present a new algorithm that learns a Mahalanobis metric using similarity and dissimilarity constraints in an online manner. This approach hybridizes a Mahalanobis distance metric learning algorithm and a k-NN data stream classification algorithm with concept drift detection. First, some basic aspects of Mahalanobis distance metric learning are described taking into account key properties as well as online distance metric learning algorithms. Second, we implement specific evaluation methodologies and comparative metrics such as Q statistic for data stream classification algorithms. Finally, our algorithm is evaluated on different datasets by comparing its results with one of the best instance-based data stream classification algorithm of the state of the art. The results demonstrate that our proposal is better

We consider a company that receives capital injections so as to avoid ruin. Differently from the classical bail-out settings where the underlying process is restricted to stay at or above zero, we study the case bail-out can only be made at independent Poisson times. Namely, we study a version of the reflected process that is pushed up to zero only on Poisson observation times at which the process is below zero. We also study the case with additional classical reflection above so as to model a company that pays dividends according to a barrier strategy. Focusing on the spectrally negative Lévy case, we compute, using the scale function, various fluctuation identities including capital injections and dividends.

Abstract:
We construct a modified continuous-state branching process whose Malthusian parameter is replaced by another when passing below a certain level. The construction is obtained via a Lamperti-like transform applied to a refracted Lévy process. Infinitesimal generator, probability of vanishing at infinity, of explosion and some path properties are also provided.

More precisely, we study the Gerber-Shiu distribution for a ruin model where at each time the surplus goes negative, an independent negative random level is considered. If a negative excursion of the surplus exceeds such random level then the insurance company goes out of business. Our methodology uses excursion theory and relies on the description of the excursion measure away from 0 which was recently obtained by the authors in Pardo et al. (see arXiv:1507.05225). Our results are given in terms of the so-called scale functions.

We provide a description of the excursion measure from a point for a spectrally negative Lévy process. The description is based in two main ingredients. The first is building a spectrally negative Lévy process conditioned to avoid zero and the study of its entrance law at zero. The latter is connected with both the excursion measure from zero of the process reflected in its infimum and reflected in its supremum. This lead us to establish a connection with the excursion measure from the state zero with the excursion measure from zero for the process reflected at the infimum and reflected at the supremum, respectively, which is the second main ingredient of our description.

We investigate the process of eigenvalues of a fractional Wishart process defined as N=B*B, where B is a matrix fractional Brownian motion recently studied by Nualart and Pérez-Abreu. Using stochastic calculus with respect to the Young integral we show that the eigenvalues do not collide at any time with probability one. When the matrix process B has entries given by independent fractional Brownian motions with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/2,1)$ we derive a stochastic differential equation in a Malliavin calculus sense for the eigenvalues of the corresponding fractional Wishart process. Finally a functional limit theorem for the empirical measure-valued process of eigenvalues of a fractional Wishart process is obtained. The limit is characterized and referred to as the free fractional Wishart process which constitutes the family of fractional dilations of the free Poisson distribution.

Abstract:
We provide a path-wise "backbone" decomposition for supercritical superprocesses with non-local branching. Our result complements a related result obtained for super-critical superprocesses without non-local branching in [1]. Our approach relies heavily on the use of so-called Dynkin-Kuznetsov N-measures.

Abstract:
We study the cosmology of a two-brane model in a five-dimensional spacetime, where the extra spatial coordinate is compactifed on an orbifold. Additionally, we consider the existence on each brane of matter fields that evolve in time. Solving the Einstein equations in a vacuum bulk, we can show how the matter fields in both branes are connected and they do not evolve independently

A refracted Lévy process is a Lévy process whose dynamics change by subtracting off a fixed linear drift (of suitable size) whenever the aggregate process is above a pre-specified level. More precisely, whenever it exists, a refracted Lévy process is described by the unique strong solution to the stochastic differential equation \[ \ud U_t=-δ\mathbf{1}_{\{U_t>b\}}\ud t +\ud X_t, \] where $X=(X_t, t\ge 0)$ is a Lévy process with law $\p$ and $b,δ\in \R$ such that the resulting process $U$ may visit the half line $(b,\infty)$ with positive probability. In this paper, we consider the case that $X$ is spectrally negative and establish a number of identities for the following functionals \[ \int_0^\infty\mathbf{1}_{\{U_t<b\}}\ud t, \quad\int_0^{ρ_a^+}\mathbf{1}_{\{U_t<b\}}\ud t, \quad\int_0^{ρ^-_c}\mathbf{1}_{\{U_t<b\}}\ud t, \quad\int_0^{ρ_a^+\landρ^-_c}\mathbf{1}_{\{U_t<b\}}\ud t, \] where $ρ^+_a=\inf\{t\ge 0: U_t> a\}$ and $ρ^-_c=\inf\{t\ge 0: U_t< c\}$ for $c<b<a$. Our identities extend recent results of Landriault et al. \cite{LRZ} and bear relevance to Parisian-type financial instruments and insurance scenarios.

This concept is based on a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) filled with high-pressure gaseous xenon, and with separated-function capabilities for calorimetry and tracking. Thanks to its excellent energy resolution, together with its powerful background rejection provided by the distinct double-beta decay topological signature, the design discussed in this Letter Of Intent promises to be competitive and possibly out-perform existing proposals for next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. We discuss the detection principles, design specifications, physics potential and R&D plans to construct a detector with 100 kg fiducial mass in the double-beta decay emitting isotope Xe(136), to be installed in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory.

We consider a new family of $\R^d$-valued Lévy processes that we call Lamperti stable. One of the advantages of this class is that the law of many related functionals can be computed explicitely (see for instance \cite{cc}, \cite{ckp}, \cite{kp} and \cite{pp}). This family of processes shares many properties with the tempered stable and the layered stable processes, defined in Rosiński \cite{ro} and Houdré and Kawai \cite{hok} respectively, for instance their short and long time behaviour. Additionally, in the real valued case we find a series representation which is used for sample paths simulation. In this work we find general properties of this class and we also provide many examples, some of which appear in recent literature.

In this work, we put forward a theoretical explanation of a peculiar effect found very recently (A. Gonzalez Urena et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 341 (2001) 495).
