Unification and Local Baryon Number
Abstract: We investigate the possibility to find an ultraviolet completion of the simple extensions of the Standard Model where baryon number is a local symmetry. In the context of such theories one can understand the spontaneous breaking of baryon number at the low scale and the proton stability. We find a simple theory based on SU(4)_C x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R where baryon number is embedded in a non-Abelian g… ▽ More

Spin precession and spin waves in a chiral electron gas: beyond Larmor's theorem
Abstract: Larmor's theorem holds for magnetic systems that are invariant under spin rotation. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling this invariance is lost and Larmor's theorem is broken: for systems of interacting electrons, this gives rise to a subtle interplay between the spin-orbit coupling acting on individual single-particle states and Coulomb many-body effects. We consider a quasi-two-dimensional, p… ▽ More

Cohomological dimension, Lyubeznik numbers, and connectedness properties in mixed characteristic
Abstract: We establish a "second vanishing theorem" for local cohomology modules over regular rings of unramified mixed characteristic, which relates the connectedness of the spectrum of a ring with the vanishing of local cohomology. Applying this, and new results on the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers, we further study connectedness properties of the spectra of a certain class of rings.

Abstract: Let $\mathcal F$ be a holomorphic one-dimensional foliation on $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that the components of its singular locus $Σ$ are curves $C_i$ and points $p_j$. We determine the number of $p_j$, counted with multiplicities, in terms of invariants of $\mathcal F$ and $C_i$, assuming that $\mathcal F$ is special along the $C_i$. Allowing just one nonzero dimensional component on $Σ$, we also prov… ▽ More

Baryon and Lepton Numbers: Life in the Desert
Abstract: The simplest theories where we can understand the origin of the baryon and lepton number violating interactions are discussed. We discuss the desert hypothesis in particle physics and the different scenarios where there is no need to assume it. It is shown that the minimal supersymmetric B-L theory predicts lepton number violation at the Large Hadron Collider if supersymmetry is realized at the lo… ▽ More

On the constancy regions for mixed test ideals
Abstract: In this note we study the partition of $\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}^{n}$ given by the regions where the mixed test ideals $τ(\mathfrak{a}_{1}^{t_{1}}... \mathfrak{a}_{n}^{t_{n}})$ are constant. We show that each region can be described as the preimage of a natural number under a p-fractal function $\varphi:\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}^{n}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$. In addition, we give some examples illustrating that th… ▽ More

Supersymmetric Dark Matter Sectors
Abstract: We investigate the properties of a dark matter sector where supersymmetry is a good symmetry. In this context we find that the stability of the dark matter candidate is possible even when R-parity is broken in the visible sector. In order to illustrate the idea we investigate a simple scenario where the dark matter candidate is the lightest scalar field in the dark sector which annihilates mainly… ▽ More

Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier
Abstract: The Proceedings of the 2011 workshop on Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier. Science opportunities at the intensity frontier are identified and described in the areas of heavy quarks, charged leptons, neutrinos, proton decay, new light weakly-coupled particles, and nucleons, nuclei, and atoms.

The Theory of R-parity, Unification and SUSY at the LHC
Abstract: The simplest gauge theories for the conservation of R-parity in supersymmetry are discussed. We show how the minimal theory based on the B-L gauge symmetry predicts that R-parity must be spontaneously broken at the TeV scale. The most striking signals of these theories at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed. We present a realistic theory where the local baryon and lepton numbers are spontaneou… ▽ More
