In this work, we derived formulae concerning the electric and magnetic field characteristics of a focused radially polarized Gaussian vector beam. Such a beam is consistent with Maxwell's equations contrary to plane waves having uniform field distribution. Hence a realistic picture is provided of the focused field distributions having importance before designing applications such as particle acceleration. For focusing a perfectly reflecting large numerical aperture on-axis parabolic mirror was supposed to have practical importance. The computation technique was based on the Stratton-Chu vector diffraction method. We pointed out that this offers a unique opportunity in the long wavelength regime, where the Richards-Wolf theory becomes unreliable. In the terahertz frequency range longitudinal electric field component with an amplitude of $\sim$160 $\text{MV}/\text{cm}$ was predicted, which is ideal for particle acceleration applications. Based on the field characteristics experienced as a function of the focusing angle, the possibility of using a paraboloid ring for particle acceleration was suggested. Its advantage is reflected not only in the strong available longitudinal field but also in ensuring the unobstructed transfer of particles as a practical point of view. The axial and radial distributions of the longitudinal electric field component for different incident beam divergences were analyzed in detail. It was found that the shift of the physical focus relative to the geometrical focus along the longitudinal direction shows a linear dependence on the divergence. The effect of the divergence angle on the field enhancement factor was also studied.

A tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz pulse source is proposed for the generation of extremely high field single-cycle terahertz pulses. The very simple and compact source consists of a single crystal slab having a blazed reflection grating grooved in its back surface. Its further important advantages are the energy scalability and the symmetric THz beam profile. Generation of 50 MV/cm focused field with 5.6 mJ terahertz pulse energy is predicted for a 5 cm diameter LiNbO$_3$ crystal, if the pump pulse is of 450 mJ energy, 1030 nm central wavelength and 1 ps pulse duration. Such sources can basically promote the realization of THz driven electron and proton accelerators and open the way for a new generation concept of terahertz pulses having extreme high field.

A new type of tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz (THz) source has been demonstrated, which is based on a lithium niobate plane-parallel slab with an echelon structure on its input surface. Single-cycle pulses of 1 microjoule energy and 0.30 THz central frequency have been generated with 0.05% efficiency from such a source. One order-of-magnitude increase in efficiency is expected by pum** a cryogenically cooled echelon of increased size and thickness with a Ti:sapphire laser. The use of a plane-parallel nonlinear optical crystal slab enables straightforward scaling to high THz pulse energies and to produce a symmetric THz beam with uniform pulse shape for good focusability and high field strength.

There are implementations and proposals for using microwave or optical radiation for electron acceleration, undulation, deflection, and spatial as well as temporal focusing. Using terahertz (THz) radiation in such applications can be superior to microwave or optical radiation since THz pulses can be generated with significantly smaller temporal jitter to the electron bunch to be manipulated as compared to microwave pulses, and contrary to the optical pulses, the much larger wavelength of THz pulses compares well with typical sizes of electron bunches. Recently generation of ultrashort THz pulses with 1 MV/cm focused electric field was demonstrated, and it is predicted that THz pulses with even 100 MV/cm focused field will be possible. According to the first results of our analytical and numerical studies this field strength is high enough for manipulation of relativistic electron beams by polarised THz pulses in various geometries. It is possible, e.g., to construct a 30 cm long THz undulator for saturated FEL working at 9.6 nm wavelength using electron bunches with 100 MeV energy and 0.42 nC charge.

Optical rectification of ultrashort laser pulses in LiNbO3 by tilted-pulse-front excitation is a powerful way to generate near single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses. Motivated by various applications, calculations were carried out to optimize the THz peak electric field strength. The results predict THz output with peak electric field strength on the MV/cm level in the 0.3-1.5 THz frequency range by using optimal pump pulse duration of about 500 fs, optimal crystal length, and cryogenic temperatures for reducing THz absorption in LiNbO3. The THz electric field strength can be increased further to tens of MV/cm by focusing. Using optimal conditions together with the contact grating technique THz pulses with 100 MV/cm field strength and energies on the tens-of-mJ scale are feasible.
