Wireless communications advance hand-in-hand with artificial intelligence (AI), indicating an interconnected advancement where each facilitates and benefits from the other. This synergy is particularly evident in the development of the sixth-generation technology standard for mobile networks (6G), envisioned to be AI-native. Generative-AI (GenAI), a novel technology capable of producing various types of outputs, including text, images, and videos, offers significant potential for wireless communications, with its distinctive features. Traditionally, conventional AI techniques have been employed for predictions, classifications, and optimization, while GenAI has more to offer. This article introduces the concept of strategic demand-planning through demand-labeling, demand-sha**, and demand-rescheduling. Accordingly, GenAI is proposed as a powerful tool to facilitate demand-sha** in wireless networks. More specifically, GenAI is used to compress and convert the content of various kind (e.g., from a higher bandwidth mode to a lower one, such as from a video to text), which subsequently enhances performance of wireless networks in various usage scenarios such as cell-switching, user association and load balancing, interference management, and disaster scenarios management. Therefore, GenAI can serve a function in saving energy and spectrum in wireless networks. With recent advancements in AI, including sophisticated algorithms like large-language-models and the development of more powerful hardware built exclusively for AI tasks, such as AI accelerators, the concept of demand-planning, particularly demand-sha** through GenAI, becomes increasingly relevant. Furthermore, recent efforts to make GenAI accessible on devices, such as user terminals, make the implementation of this concept even more straightforward and feasible.

In order to bolster future wireless networks, there has been a great deal of interest in non-terrestrial networks, especially aerial platform stations including the high altitude platform station (HAPS) and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV). These platforms can integrate advanced technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In this regard, this paper proposes a multi-layer network architecture to improve the performance of conventional HAPS super-macro base station (HAPS-SMBS)-assisted UAV. The architecture includes a HAPS-SMBS, UAVs equipped with active transmissive RIS, and ground Internet of things devices. We also consider multiple-input single-output (MISO) technology, by employing multiple antennas at the HAPS-SMBS and a single antenna at the Internet of things devices. Additionally, we consider NOMA as the multiple access technology as well as the existence of hardware impairments as a practical limitation. In particular, we compare the proposed system model with three different scenarios: HAPS-SMBS-assisted UAV that are equipped with active transmissive RIS and supported by single-input single-output system, HAPS-SMBS-assisted UAV that are equipped with amplify-and-forward relaying, and HAPS-SMBS-assisted UAV-equipped with passive transmissive RIS. Sum rate and energy efficiency are used as performance metrics, and the findings demonstrate that, in comparison to all benchmarks, the proposed system yields higher performance gain. Moreover, the hardware impairment limits the system performance at high transmit power levels.

This study aims to introduce and address the problem of traffic load estimation in the cell switching concept within the evolving landscape of vertical heterogeneous networks (vHetNets). The problem is that the practice of cell switching faces a significant challenge due to the lack of accurate data on the traffic load of slee** small base stations (SBSs). This problem makes the majority of the studies in the literature, particularly those employing load-dependent approaches, impractical due to their basic assumption of perfect knowledge of the traffic loads of slee** SBSs for the next time slot. Rather than develo** another advanced cell switching algorithm, this study investigates the impacts of estimation errors and explores possible solutions through established methodologies in a novel vHetNet environment that includes the integration of a high altitude platform (HAPS) as a super macro base station (SMBS) into the terrestrial network. In other words, this study adopts a more foundational perspective, focusing on eliminating a significant obstacle for the application of advanced cell switching algorithms. To this end, we explore the potential of three distinct spatial interpolation-based estimation schemes: random neighboring selection, distance-based selection, and clustering-based selection. Utilizing a real dataset for empirical validations, we evaluate the efficacy of our proposed traffic load estimation schemes. Our results demonstrate that the multi-level clustering (MLC) algorithm performs exceptionally well, with an insignificant difference (i.e., 0.8%) observed between its estimated and actual network power consumption, highlighting its potential to significantly improve energy efficiency in vHetNets.

This study aims to introduce the cell load estimation problem of cell switching approaches in cellular networks specially-presented in a high-altitude platform station (HAPS)-assisted network. The problem arises from the fact that the traffic loads of slee** base stations for the next time slot cannot be perfectly known, but they can rather be estimated, and any estimation error could result in divergence from the optimal decision, which subsequently affects the performance of energy efficiency. The traffic loads of the slee** base stations for the next time slot are required because the switching decisions are made proactively in the current time slot. Two different Q-learning algorithms are developed; one is full-scale, focusing solely on the performance, while the other one is lightweight and addresses the computational cost. Results confirm that the estimation error is capable of changing cell switching decisions that yields performance divergence compared to no-error scenarios. Moreover, the developed Q-learning algorithms perform well since an insignificant difference (i.e., 0.3%) is observed between them and the optimum algorithm.

Deploying uncrewed aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) can provide a radio access network (RAN); however, the backhaul link may also be damaged and unserviceable in such disaster conditions. Therefore, in this study, we investigate a three-layer heterogeneous network with different topologies to prolong the lifespan of the temporary network by using UAV-BSs for RAN services and HAPS-SMBS as a backhaul. Furthermore, a two-layer clustering algorithm is proposed to handle the UAV-BS ad-hoc networking effectively.

This study investigates the integration of a high altitude platform station (HAPS), a non-terrestrial network (NTN) node, into the cell-switching paradigm for energy saving. By doing so, the sustainability and ubiquitous connectivity targets can be achieved. Besides, a delay-aware approach is also adopted, where the delay profiles of users are respected in such a way that we attempt to meet the latency requirements of users with a best-effort strategy. To this end, a novel, simple, and lightweight Q-learning algorithm is designed to address the cell-switching optimization problem. During the simulation campaigns, different interference scenarios and delay situations between base stations are examined in terms of energy consumption and quality-of-service (QoS), and the results confirm the efficacy of the proposed Q-learning algorithm.

In the evolving landscape of vertical heterogeneous networks, the practice of cell switching particularly for small base stations faces a significant challenge due to the lack of accurate data on the traffic load of slee** SBSs. This information gap is crucial as it hinders the feasibility and applicability of existing power consumption optimization methods; however, the studies in the literature predominantly assume perfect knowledge about the traffic load of slee** SBSs. Addressing this critical issue, our study introduces innovative methodologies for estimating the traffic load of slee** SBSs in a vHetNet including the integration of a high altitude platform as a super macro base station into the terrestrial network. We propose three distinct spatial interpolation-based estimation schemes: clustering-based, distance based, and random neighboring selection. This paper is dedicated to a robust ordinal method for learning the preferences of a decision maker between subsets. The decision model, derived from Fishburn and LaValle (1996) and whose parameters we learn, is general enough to be compatible with any strict weak order on subsets, thanks to the consideration of possible interactions between elements. Moreover, we accept not to predict some preferences if the available preference data are not compatible with a reliable prediction. A predicted preference is considered reliable if all the simplest models (Occam's razor) explaining the preference data agree on it. Following the robust ordinal regression methodology, our predictions are based on an uncertainty set encompassing the possible values of the model parameters. We define a robust ordinal dominance relation between subsets and we design a procedure to determine whether this dominance relation holds. Numerical tests are provided on synthetic and real-world data to evaluate the richness and reliability of the preference predictions made.

Providing a stable connectivity in maritime communications is of utmost importance to unleash the full potential of smart ports. Nonetheless, due to the crowded nature of harbor environments, it is likely that some ships are shadowed by others, resulting in reduced received power that subsequently diminishes their data rates-even threatens basic connectivity requirements. Given that uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been regarded as an integral part of future generations of wireless communication networks, they can be employed in maritime communications as well. In this paper, we investigate the use of UAV-mounted relays in order to help mitigate the reduced data rates of blocked links in maritime communications. Various communication architectures are considered based on the positioning mechanism of the UAV; in this regard, fixed, k-means algorithm-based, and landing spot-based positioning approaches are examined. Additionally, since UAVs are predominantly battery-operated, the energy consumption performances of these approaches are also measured. Results reveal that the landing spot-based UAV relay positioning approach finds the best trade-off between the data rate and energy consumption.

There is a consensus in the literature that cell-switching is a viable solution to tackle the draconian increase in the energy consumption of cellular networks. Although the literature is full of works addressing the energy consumption problem via cell-switching, where small cells with low or no load are turned off and the traffic is offloaded to either adjacent base stations or macro cells, in terrestrial communication networks, they may not be feasible when there is either a lack of infrastructure or insufficient capacity due to high demand. The integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) into the cell-switching process can be considered as a visionary approach to handle this problem. In this regard, high altitude platform station (HAPS) draws considerable attention with its massive footprint, high capacity, and ubiquitous connectivity. The aim of this study is to show the potential benefits of using HAPS in cell-switching methods by being a bountiful host for offloaded users from cell-switching operations. More specifically, HAPS is included in the network so that it can increase the switching off opportunities by providing extra coverage and capacity. The simulation results demonstrate that a significant amount of reduction in energy consumption (as high as 16%) is obtained while ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) requirements.

The study focuses on the steady-state thermohydraulic behavior of the LiF-BeF2 (FLiBe) molten salt flowing through a compact heat exchanger with multi louvered fins in the cooling loop of a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). This numerical benchmark study was conducted to obtain data both for baseline and cases with slow coolant circulation problems in the reactor. A series of numerical tests are conducted for low Reynolds numbers of 100 to 500 based on the louver pitch with different fin pitches and fin louver angles. The steady-state velocity profiles, temperature, and pressure fields are studied in detail. The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop data are reported in terms of Colburn j-factor and Fanning friction factor f, and the volume goodness factor to get a performance comparison for FLiBe as the coolant in a Molten Salt Reactor. As regards findings of the analyses, when the louver angle steeps, the molten salt flow becomes more louvered direct which improves the interaction and heat transfer between the fin and molten salt. On the contrary, when the fin pitches increase, the flow becomes duct-directed that reducing the contact between fin and FLiBe which leads to a decline in thermal performance.

Building segmentation of satellite images can be used for many potential applications such as city, agricultural, and communication network planning. However, since no dataset exists for every region, the model trained in a region must gain generality. In this study, we trained several models in China and post-processing work was done on the best model selected among them. These models are evaluated in the Chicago region of the INRIA dataset. As can be seen from the results, although state-of-art results in this area have not been achieved, the results are promising. Artificial Neural Networks and image segmentation methods are among the most successful methods for extracting road data from satellite images. However, these models require large amounts of training data from different regions to achieve high accuracy rates. In cases where this data needs to be of more quantity or quality, it is a standard method to train deep neural networks by transferring knowledge from annotated data obtained from different sources. This study proposes a method that performs path segmentation with semi-supervised learning methods. A semi-supervised field adaptation method based on pseudo-labeling and Minimum Class Confusion method has been proposed, and it has been observed to increase performance in targeted datasets.

The purpose of this article is to extract and simulate traffic patterns from more than 14,000 cells that have been installed in different metropolitan areas. To do this, we create, implement, and assess a method in which cells are first categorized by their point of interest and then clustered based on the temporal distribution of cells in each region. The proposed model has been tested using real-world 5G mobile traffic datasets collected over 31 weeks in various cities. We found that our proposed model performed well in predicting mobile traffic patterns up to 2 weeks in advance. Our model outperformed the base model in most areas of interest and generally achieved up to 15\% less prediction error compared to the naïve approach. This indicates that our approach is effective in predicting mobile traffic patterns in large-scale cellular networks.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to support a wide variety of missions, such as remote surveillance, vehicle tracking, and object detection. For problems involving processing of areas larger than a single image, the mosaicking of UAV imagery is a necessary step. Real-time image mosaicking is used for missions that requires fast response like search and rescue missions. It typically requires information from additional sensors, such as Global Position System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), to facilitate direct orientation, or 3D reconstruction approaches to recover the camera poses. This paper proposes a UAV-based system for real-time creation of incremental mosaics which does not require either direct or indirect camera parameters such as orientation information. Inspired by previous approaches, in the mosaicking process, feature extraction from images, matching of similar key points between images, finding homography matrix to warp and align images, and blending images to obtain mosaics better looking, plays important roles in the achievement of the high quality result. Edge detection is used in the blending step as a novel approach. Experimental results show that real-time incremental image mosaicking process can be completed satisfactorily and without need for any additional camera parameters.

Transfer Learning methods are widely used in satellite image segmentation problems and improve performance upon classical supervised learning methods. In this study, we present a semantic segmentation method that allows us to make land cover maps by using transfer learning methods. We compare models trained in low-resolution images with insufficient data for the targeted region or zoom level. In order to boost performance on target data we experiment with models trained with unsupervised, semi-supervised and supervised transfer learning approaches, including satellite images from public datasets and other unlabeled sources. According to experimental results, transfer learning improves segmentation performance 3.4% MIoU (Mean Intersection over Union) in rural regions and 12.9% MIoU in urban regions. We observed that transfer learning is more effective when two datasets share a comparable zoom level and are labeled with identical rules; otherwise, semi-supervised learning is more effective by using the data as unlabeled. In addition, experiments showed that HRNet outperformed building segmentation approaches in multi-class segmentation.

This paper is dedicated to a cautious learning methodology for predicting preferences between alternatives characterized by binary attributes (formally, each alternative is seen as a subset of attributes). By "cautious", we mean that the model learned to represent the multi-attribute preferences is general enough to be compatible with any strict weak order on the alternatives, and that we allow ourselves not to predict some preferences if the data collected are not compatible with a reliable prediction. A predicted preference will be considered reliable if all the simplest models (following Occam's razor principle) explaining the training data agree on it. Predictions are based on an ordinal dominance relation between alternatives [Fishburn and LaValle, 1996]. The dominance relation relies on an uncertainty set encompassing the possible values of the parameters of the multi-attribute utility function. Numerical tests are provided to evaluate the richness and the reliability of the predictions made.

Albeit many competent technologies for capacity enhancement purposes, such as millimeter wave communications and network densification, there is still room and need for further capacity enhancement in wireless communication networks, especially for the cases of unusual people gatherings, such as sport competitions, musical concerts, etc. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been identified as one of the promising options to enhance the capacity due to their easy implementation, pop up fashion operation, and cost-effective nature. The main idea is to deploy base stations on UAVs and operate them as flying base stations, thereby bringing additional capacity to where it is needed. However, because the UAVs mostly have limited energy storage, their energy consumption must be optimized to increase flight time. In this survey, we investigate different energy optimization techniques with a top-level classification in terms of the optimization algorithm employed; conventional and machine learning (ML). Such classification helps understand the state of the art and the current trend in terms of methodology. In this regard, various optimization techniques are identified from the related literature, and they are presented under the above mentioned classes of employed optimization methods. In addition, for the purpose of completeness, we include a brief tutorial on the optimization methods and power supply and charging mechanisms of UAVs. Moreover, novel concepts, such as reflective intelligent surfaces and landing spot optimization, are also covered to capture the latest trend in the literature.

Speech enhancement and separation have been a long-standing problem, especially with the recent advances using a single microphone. Although microphones perform well in constrained settings, their performance for speech separation decreases in noisy conditions. In this work, we propose RadioSES, an audioradio speech enhancement and separation system that overcomes inherent problems in audio-only systems. By fusing a complementary radio modality, RadioSES can estimate the number of speakers, solve source association problem, separate and enhance noisy mixture speeches, and improve both intelligibility and perceptual quality. We perform millimeter-wave sensing to detect and localize speakers, and introduce an audioradio deep learning framework to fuse the separate radio features with the mixed audio features. Extensive experiments using commercial off-the-shelf devices show that RadioSES outperforms a variety of state-of-the-art baselines, with consistent performance gains in different environmental settings. Compared with the audiovisual methods, RadioSES provides similar improvements (e.g., ~3 dB gains in SiSDR), along with the benefits of lower computational complexity and being less privacy concerning.

One of the major capacity boosters for 5G networks is the deployment of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks (UDHNs). However, this deployment results in tremendousincrease in the energy consumption of the network due to the large number of base stations (BSs) involved. In addition to enhanced capacity, 5G networks must also be energy efficient for it to be economically viable and environmentally friendly. Dynamic cell switching is a very common way of reducing the total energy consumption of the network but most of the proposed methods are computationally demanding which makes them unsuitable for application in ultra-dense network deployment with massive number of BSs. To tackle this problem, we propose a lightweight cell switching scheme also known as Threshold-based Hybrid cEllswItching Scheme (THESIS) for energy optimization in UDHNs. The developed approach combines the benefits of clustering and exhaustive search (ES) algorithm to produce a solution whose optimality is close to that of the ES (which is guaranteed tobe optimal), but is computationally more efficient than ES and as such can be applied for cell switching in real networks even when their dimension is large. The performance evaluation shows that the THESIS produces a significant reduction in the energy consumption of the UDHN and is able to reduce the complexity of finding a near-optimal solution from exponential to polynomial complexity.

One of the ways of achieving improved capacity in mobile cellular networks is via network densification. Even though densification increases the capacity of the network, it also leads to increased energy consumption which can be curbed by dynamically switching off some base stations (BSs) during periods of low traffic. However, dynamic cell switching has the challenge of spectrum under-utilizationas the spectrum originally occupied by the BSs that are turned off remains dormant. This dormant spectrum can be leased by the primary network (PN) operators, who hold the license, to the secondary network (SN) operators who cannot afford to purchase the spectrum license. Thus enabling the PN to gain additional revenue from spectrum leasing as well as from electricity cost savings due to reduced energy consumption. Therefore, in this work, we propose a cell switching and spectrum leasing framework based on simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to maximize the revenue of the PN while respecting the quality-of-service constraints. The performance evaluation reveals that the proposed method is very close to optimal exhaustive search method with a significant reduction in the computation complexity.

Voice interfaces has become an integral part of our lives, with the proliferation of smart devices. Today, IoT devices mainly rely on microphones to sense sound. Microphones, however, have fundamental limitations, such as weak source separation, limited range in the presence of acoustic insulation, and being prone to multiple side-channel attacks. In this paper, we propose RadioMic, a radio-based sound sensing system to mitigate these issues and enrich sound applications. RadioMic constructs sound based on tiny vibrations on active sources (e.g., a speaker or human throat) or object surfaces (e.g., paper bag), and can work through walls, even a soundproof one. To convert the extremely weak sound vibration in the radio signals into sound signals, RadioMic introduces radio acoustics, and presents training-free approaches for robust sound detection and high-fidelity sound recovery. It then exploits a neural network to further enhance the recovered sound by expanding the recoverable frequencies and reducing the noises. RadioMic translates massive online audios to synthesized data to train the network, and thus minimizes the need of RF data. We thoroughly evaluate RadioMic under different scenarios using a commodity mmWave radar. The results show RadioMic outperforms the state-of-the-art systems significantly. We believe RadioMic provides new horizons for sound sensing and inspires attractive sensing capabilities of mmWave sensing devices

Remote examination and job interviews have gained popularity and become indispensable because of both pandemics and the advantage of remote working circumstances. Most companies and academic institutions utilize these systems for their recruitment processes and also for online exams. However, one of the critical problems of the remote examination systems is conducting the exams in a reliable environment. In this work, we present a cheating analysis pipeline for online interviews and exams. The system only requires a video of the candidate, which is recorded during the exam. Then cheating detection pipeline is employed to detect another person, electronic device usage, and candidate absence status. The pipeline consists of face detection, face recognition, object detection, and face tracking algorithms. To evaluate the performance of the pipeline we collected a private video dataset. The video dataset includes both cheating activities and clean videos. Ultimately, our pipeline presents an efficient and fast guideline to detect and analyze cheating activities in an online interview and exam video.

Nowadays, DevOps pipelines of huge projects are getting more and more complex. Each job in the pipeline might need different requirements including specific hardware specifications and dependencies. To achieve minimal makespan, developers always apply as much machines as possible. Consequently, others may be stalled for waiting resource released. Minimizing the makespan of each job using a few resource is a challenging problem. In this study, it is aimed to 1) automatically determine the priority of jobs to reduce the waiting time in the line, 2) automatically allocate the machine resource to each job. In this work, the problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem. We use GA algorithm to automatically determine job priorities and resource demand for minimizing individual makespan and resource usage. Finally, the experimental results show that our proposed priority list generation algorithm is more effective than current priority list producing method in the aspects of makespan and allocated machine count.

Recently, program autotuning has become very popular especially in embedded systems, when we have limited resources such as computing power and memory where these systems run generally time-critical applications. Compiler optimization space gradually expands with the renewed compiler options and inclusion of new architectures. These advancements bring autotuning even more important position. In this paper, we introduced Flag Optimization with Genetic Algorithm (FOGA) as an autotuning solution for GCC flag optimization. FOGA has two main advantages over the other autotuning approaches: the first one is the hyperparameter tuning of the genetic algorithm (GA), the second one is the maximum iteration parameter to stop when no further improvement occurs. We demonstrated remarkable speedup in the execution time of C++ source codes with the help of optimization flags provided by FOGA when compared to the state of the art framework OpenTuner.

Deep learning algorithms vary depending on the underlying connection mechanism of nodes of them. They have various hyperparameters that are either set via specific algorithms or randomly chosen. Meanwhile, hyperparameters of deep learning algorithms have the potential to help enhance the performance of the machine learning tasks. In this paper, a tuning guideline is provided for researchers who cope with issues originated from hyperparameters of deep learning models. To that end, four types of deep learning algorithms are investigated in terms of tuning and data mining perspective. Further, common search methods of hyperparameters are evaluated on four deep learning algorithms. Normalization helps increase the performance of classification, according to the results of this study. The number of features has not contributed to the decline in the accuracy of deep learning algorithms. Even though high sparsity results in low accuracy, a uniform distribution is much more crucial to reach reliable results in terms of data mining.

Ultra-dense deployments in 5G, the next generation of cellular networks, are an alternative to provide ultra-high throughput by bringing the users closer to the base stations. On the other hand, 5G deployments must not incur a large increase in energy consumption in order to keep them cost-effective and most importantly to reduce the carbon footprint of cellular networks. We propose a reinforcement learning cell switching algorithm, to minimize the energy consumption in ultra-dense deployments without compromising the quality of service (QoS) experienced by the users. In this regard, the proposed algorithm can intelligently learn which small cells (SCs) to turn off at any given time based on the traffic load of the SCs and the macro cell. To validate the idea, we used the open call detail record (CDR) data set from the city of Milan, Italy, and tested our algorithm against typical operational benchmark solutions. With the obtained results, we demonstrate exactly when and how the proposed algorithm can provide energy savings, and moreover how this happens without reducing QoS of users. Most importantly, we show that our solution has a very similar performance to the exhaustive search, with the advantage of being scalable and less complex.

A novel approach is presented in this work for context-aware connectivity and processing optimization of Internet of things (IoT) networks. Different from the state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed approach simultaneously selects the best connectivity and processing unit (e.g., device, fog, and cloud) along with the percentage of data to be offloaded by jointly optimizing energy consumption, response-time, security, and monetary cost. The proposed scheme employs a reinforcement learning algorithm, and manages to achieve significant gains compared to deterministic solutions. In particular, the requirements of IoT devices in terms of response-time and security are taken as inputs along with the remaining battery level of the devices, and the developed algorithm returns an optimized policy. The results obtained show that only our method is able to meet the holistic multi-objective optimisation criteria, albeit, the benchmark approaches may achieve better results on a particular metric at the cost of failing to reach the other targets. Thus, the proposed approach is a device-centric and context-aware solution that accounts for the monetary and battery constraints.

The design of the multifunctional sample probe allows easy connection of other external devices and easy installation into other dewar and magnet systems. A software interface based on NI Labview visual programming language has been developed to control the system. The setup has been tested in the hysteresis loop measurements of perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pt/CoO ultra-thin films with anomalous Hall effect (AHE) method. We have also performed temperature dependent exchange bias measurements of the samples. Nonlinear effects in protein dynamics are expected to play role in function, particularly of allosteric nature, by facilitating energy transfer between vibrational modes. A recently proposed method focusing on the non-Gaussian shape of the population near equilibrium projects this information onto real space in order to identify the aminoacids relevant to function. We here apply this method to three ancestral proteins in glucocorticoid receptor (GR) family and show that the mutations that restrict functional activity during GR evolution correlate significantly with locations that are highlighted by the nonlinear contribution to the near-native configurational distribution. Our findings demonstrate that nonlinear effects are not only indispensible for understanding functionality in proteins, but they can also be harnessed into a predictive tool for functional site determination.

We propose HAMSI (Hessian Approximated Multiple Subsets Iteration), which is a provably convergent, second order incremental algorithm for solving large-scale partially separable optimization problems. The algorithm is based on a local quadratic approximation, and hence, allows incorporating curvature information to speed-up the convergence. HAMSI is inherently parallel and it scales nicely with the number of processors. Combined with techniques for effectively utilizing modern parallel computer architectures, we illustrate that the proposed method converges more rapidly than a parallel stochastic gradient descent when both methods are used to solve large-scale matrix factorization problems. This performance gain comes only at the expense of using memory that scales linearly with the total size of the optimization variables. We conclude that HAMSI may be considered as a viable alternative in many large scale problems, where first order methods based on variants of stochastic gradient descent are applicable.

Perpendicular exchange bias has been manipulated by changing ferromagnetic film thickness and spacer layer in Pt/Co/(Pt, Cr)/CoO thin films. The exchange bias characteristics, blocking temperature, magnetization of thin films strongly depend on the spacer layer (Pt, Cr) between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers. While Pt/Co/Pt/CoO thin films show perpendicular exchange bias, Pt/Co/Cr/CoO has easy magnetization axis in the film plane. We have also observed very small hysteretic behavior from the hard axis magnetization curve of Pt/Co/Cr/CoO film. This can be attributed to misalignment of the sample or small perpendicular contribution from Pt/Co bottom interface. We have also investigated the temperature and spacer layer dependent exchange bias properties of the samples by VSM magnetometry. We observed higher HEB and HC for the thicker Co layer in the Pt/Co/Pt/CoO sample. In addition, onset of exchange bias effect starts at much lower temperatures for Pt/Co/Cr/CoO thin film. This clearly shows that Cr spacer layer not only removes the perpendicular exchange bias, but also reduces the exchange interaction between Co and CoO and thus lowers the blocking temperature.

Temperature and PtCo composition dependence of exchange bias in PtxCo1-x/CoO bilayers is investigated. It is observed that exchange bias properties, blocking temperature and magnetic anisotropy of the PtxCo1-x/CoO thin films are strongly affected by the concentration of Pt at the common interface. A detailed structural analysis of antiferromagnetic CoO has been done by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS data revealed that CoO layer grows with non-stoichiometric behavior which results in other cobalt oxide phases and thus lowers blocking temperature for the exchange biased systems. Increase of Pt concentration in PtCo layer strengths the exchange bias and thus decreases training of the system. It also results in enhancement of growth-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and onset of exchange bias at higher temperatures. The role of Pt concentration on the interfacial interactions between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers, and the effect of superstoichiometric CoO on blocking temperature are also discussed.

A new agent-based, bounded-confidence model for discrete one-dimensional opinion dynamics is presented. The agents interact if their opinions do not differ more than a tolerance parameter. In pairwise interactions, one of the pair, randomly selected, converts to the opinion of the other. The model can be used to simulate cases where no compromise is possible, such as choices of substitute goods, or other exclusive choices. The homogeneous case with maximum tolerance is equivalent to the Gambler's Ruin problem. A homogeneous system always ends up in an absorbing state, which can have one or more surviving opinions. An upper bound for the final number of opinions is given. The distribution of absorption times fits the generalized extreme value distribution. The diffusion coefficient of an opinion increases linearly with the number of opinions within the tolerance parameter. A general master equation and specific Markov matrices are given. The software code developed for this study is provided as a supplement.

A parametric model potential for the triplet molecular states of the Fr$_{2}$ is represented, and the scattering lengths at and the effective range $r_{e}$ are calculated using WKB and Numerov methods for Fr-Fr in the triplet state. The convergence of these scattering properties as the depending on a $K_{0}$ parameter and core radius is also investigated using two method as Quantum Defect Theory and analytical formula of symskovisky.

The calculation of the elastic scattering properties of mixtures composed by rubidium and potassium atoms is reported and compared with experimental results in detail. The improved potentials for both molecular states the singlet and the triplet of the RbK are presented, and the scattering lengths a_{t} and the effective range r_{e} are calculated with the help of this potential using WKB and Numerov methods for Rb-K in the triplet and singlet state. In addition, the convergence of these scattering properties as the depending on a K_{0} parameter is investigated using Quantum Defect Theory. The evaporative cooling other results that include the cross section and the spin-charge cross section, the rate coefficient as a function of the energy and the ultra-low temperature are also presented in this study.
