Acousto-optics consists of launching acoustic waves in a medium (usually a crystal) in order to modulate its refractive index and create a tunable optical grating. In this article, we present the theoretical basis of a new scheme to generate acousto-optics in a gas, where the acoustic waves are initiated by the localized absorption (and thus gas heating) of spatially-modulated UV light, as was demonstrated in Y. Michine and H. Yoneda, Commun. Phys. 3, 24 (2020). We identify the chemical reactions initiated by the absorption of UV light via the photodissociation of ozone molecules present in the gas, and calculate the resulting temperature increase in the gas as a function of space and time. Solving the Euler fluid equations shows that the modulated, isochoric heating initiates a mixed acoustic/entropy wave in the gas, whose high-amplitude density (and thus refractive index) modulation can be used to manipulate a high-power laser. We calculate that diffraction efficiencies near 100% can be obtained using only a few millimeters of gas containing a few percent ozone fraction at room temperature, with UV fluences of less than 100 mJ/cm2, consistent with the experimental measurements. Our analysis suggests possible ways to optimize the diffraction efficiency by changing the buffer gas composition. Gases have optics damage thresholds two to three orders of magnitude beyond those of solids; these optical elements should therefore be able to manipulate kJ-class lasers.

The development of online economics arouses the demand of generating images of models on product clothes, to display new clothes and promote sales. However, the expensive proprietary model images challenge the existing image virtual try-on methods in this scenario, as most of them need to be trained on considerable amounts of model images accompanied with paired clothes images. In this paper, we propose a cheap yet scalable weakly-supervised method called Deep Generative Projection (DGP) to address this specific scenario. Lying in the heart of the proposed method is to imitate the process of human predicting the wearing effect, which is an unsupervised imagination based on life experience rather than computation rules learned from supervisions. Here a pretrained StyleGAN is used to capture the practical experience of wearing. Experiments show that projecting the rough alignment of clothing and body onto the StyleGAN space can yield photo-realistic wearing results. Experiments on real scene proprietary model images demonstrate the superiority of DGP over several state-of-the-art supervised methods when generating clothing model images.

Image virtual try-on task has abundant applications and has become a hot research topic recently. Existing 2D image-based virtual try-on methods aim to transfer a target clothing image onto a reference person, which has two main disadvantages: cannot control the size and length precisely; unable to accurately estimate the user's figure in the case of users wearing thick clothes, resulting in inaccurate dressing effect. In this paper, we put forward an akin task that aims to dress clothing for underwear models. %, which is also an urgent need in e-commerce scenarios. To solve the above drawbacks, we propose a Shape Controllable Virtual Try-On Network (SC-VTON), where a graph attention network integrates the information of model and clothing to generate the warped clothing image. In addition, the control points are incorporated into SC-VTON for the desired clothing shape. Furthermore, by adding a Splitting Network and a Synthesis Network, we can use clothing/model pair data to help optimize the deformation module and generalize the task to the typical virtual try-on task. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can achieve accurate shape control. Meanwhile, compared with other methods, our method can generate high-resolution results with detailed textures.

An algebraic group is called semi-reductive if it is a semi-direct product of a reductive subgroup and the unipotent radical. Such a semi-reductive algebraic group naturally arises and also plays a key role in the study of modular representations of non-classical finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in positive characteristic, and some other cases. Let $G$ ba a connected semi-reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. It turns out that $G$ has many same properties as reductive groups, such as the Bruhat decomposition. In this note, we obtain an analogue of classical Chevalley restriction theorem for $\mathfrak{g}$, which says that the $G$-invariant ring $\mathbb{F}[\mathfrak{g}]^G$ is a polynomial ring if $\mathfrak{g}$ satisfies a certain "posivity" condition suited for lots of cases we are interested in. As applications, we further investigate the nilpotent cones and resolutions of singularities for semi-reductive Lie algebras.

Assessing pain in patients unable to speak (also called non-verbal patients) is extremely complicated and often is done by clinical judgement. However, this method is not reliable since patients vital signs can fluctuate significantly due to other underlying medical conditions. No objective diagnosis test exists to date that can assist medical practitioners in the diagnosis of pain. In this study we propose the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and deep learning for the assessment of human pain. The aim of this study is to explore the use deep learning to automatically learn features from fNIRS raw data to reduce the level of subjectivity and domain knowledge required in the design of hand-crafted features. Four deep learning models were evaluated, multilayer perceptron (MLP), forward and backward long short-term memory net-works (LSTM), and bidirectional LSTM. The results showed that the Bi-LSTM model achieved the highest accuracy (90.6%)and faster than the other three models. These results advance knowledge in pain assessment using neuroimaging as a method of diagnosis and represent a step closer to develo** a physiologically based diagnosis of human pain that will benefit vulnerable populations who cannot self-report pain.

Let $ W(n) $ be Jacobson-Witt algebra over algebraic closed field $ \mathbb{K} $ with positive characteristic $ p>2. $ It is difficult to classify all Borel subalgebras of $ W(n) $ or non-classical restricted simple Lie algebras. The present paper and \cite{S7} study two kinds of subalgebras which are easily to understand and highly related to Borel subalgebras.
In \cite{S7}, the last author investigates a class of special Borel subalgebras of $W(n)$ which is called homogeneous Borel subalgebras. The present paper focuses on subalgebras of $ W(n) $ which are related to Borel subalgebras such that firstly, they could be trigonalizable; and secondly, they essentially belong to the ones investigated in \cite{S7}. In this paper, the conjugation classes of these subalgebras and representative for each class will be determined. Then some properties such as filtration and dimension will be investigated.

Many well-trained Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) models have now been released online by developers for the sake of effortless reproducing. In this paper, we treat such pre-trained networks as teachers and explore how to learn a target student network for customized tasks, using multiple teachers that handle different tasks. We assume no human-labelled annotations are available, and each teacher model can be either single- or multi-task network, where the former is a degenerated case of the latter. The student model, depending on the customized tasks, learns the related knowledge filtered from the multiple teachers, and eventually masters the complete or a subset of expertise from all teachers. To this end, we adopt a layer-wise training strategy, which entangles the student's network block to be learned with the corresponding teachers. As demonstrated on several benchmarks, the learned student network achieves very promising results, even outperforming the teachers on the customized tasks.

In this paper, we investigate a novel deep-model reusing task. Our goal is to train a lightweight and versatile student model, without human-labelled annotations, that amalgamates the knowledge and masters the expertise of two pretrained teacher models working on heterogeneous problems, one on scene parsing and the other on depth estimation. To this end, we propose an innovative training strategy that learns the parameters of the student intertwined with the teachers, achieved by 'projecting' its amalgamated features onto each teacher's domain and computing the loss. We also introduce two options to generalize the proposed training strategy to handle three or more tasks simultaneously. The proposed scheme yields very encouraging results. As demonstrated on several benchmarks, the trained student model achieves results even superior to those of the teachers in their own expertise domains and on par with the state-of-the-art fully supervised models relying on human-labelled annotations.

The novel properties of a uniaxially-expanded TiN bulk arising from increasing the layer spacing from equilibrium are explored using a first-principles approach. We reveal a novel nonmagnetic-magnetic transition from a TiN bulk to its monolayer. We also investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of a few TiN atomic layers. We find that the bilayer and trilayer, like the TiN bulk, are nonmagnetic poor metals. On the other hand, the monolayer TiN is found to carry a magnetic moment on its Ti atoms, and likely be a semiconductor. The unpaired electron giving rise to magnetism on Ti is primarily in the orbital perpendicular to the layers, and we find it is freed to give rise to magnetism when the layers are slightly separated. We find two different antiferromagnetic states possible on the monolayer, as well as one ferromagnetic, with one of the antiferromagnetic being the lowest energy. The exchange couplings between Ti atoms in such a monolayer are calculated to be antiferromagnetic for both the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor sites. We also analyze the binding nature of both the monolayer and bilayer TiN by searching for the predominant binding orbitals.

In this paper, we introduce a selective zero-shot classification problem: how can the classifier avoid making dubious predictions? Existing attribute-based zero-shot classification methods are shown to work poorly in the selective classification scenario. We argue the under-complete human defined attribute vocabulary accounts for the poor performance. We propose a selective zero-shot classifier based on both the human defined and the automatically discovered residual attributes. The proposed classifier is constructed by firstly learning the defined and the residual attributes jointly. Then the predictions are conducted within the subspace of the defined attributes. Finally, the prediction confidence is measured by both the defined and the residual attributes. Experiments conducted on several benchmarks demonstrate that our classifier produces a superior performance to other methods under the risk-coverage trade-off metric.

To help reveal the complete picture of linear kinetic drift modes, four independent numerical approaches, based on integral equation, Euler initial value simulation, Euler matrix eigenvalue solution and Lagrangian particle simulation, respectively, are used to solve the linear gyrokinetic electrostatic drift modes equation in Z-pinch with slab simplification and in tokamak with ballooning space coordinate. We identify that these approaches can yield the same solution with the difference smaller than 1\%, and the discrepancies mainly come from the numerical convergence, which is the first detailed benchmark of four independent numerical approaches for gyrokinetic linear drift modes. Using these approaches, we find that the entropy mode and interchange mode are on the same branch in Z-pinch, and the entropy mode can have both electron and ion branches. And, at strong gradient, more than one eigenstate of the ion temperature gradient mode (ITG) can be unstable and the most unstable one can be on non-ground eigenstates. The propagation of ITGs from ion to electron diamagnetic direction at strong gradient is also observed, which implies that the propagation direction is not a decisive criterion for the experimental diagnosis of turbulent mode at the edge plasmas.
