Spins of electrons in CMOS quantum dots combine exquisite quantum properties and scalable fabrication. In the age of quantum technology, however, the metrics that crowned Si/SiO2 as the microelectronics standard need to be reassessed with respect to their impact upon qubit performance. We chart the spin qubit variability due to the unavoidable atomic-scale roughness of the Si/SiO$_2$ interface, compiling experiments in 12 devices, and develo** theoretical tools to analyse these results. Atomistic tight binding and path integral Monte Carlo methods are adapted for describing fluctuations in devices with millions of atoms by directly analysing their wavefunctions and electron paths instead of their energy spectra. We correlate the effect of roughness with the variability in qubit position, deformation, valley splitting, valley phase, spin-orbit coupling and exchange coupling. These variabilities are found to be bounded and lie within the tolerances for scalable architectures for quantum computing as long as robust control methods are incorporated.

Polymer brushes, coatings consisting of densely grafted macromolecules, experience an intrinsic lateral compressive pressure, originating from chain elasticity and excluded volume interactions. This lateral pressure complicates a proper definition of the interface and, thereby, the determination and interpretation of the interfacial tension and its relation to the wetting behavior of brushes. Here, we study the link between grafting-induced compressive lateral pressure in polymer brushes, interfacial tension, and brush wettability using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on grafting densities and polymer-liquid affinities such that the polymer and liquid do not tend to mix. For these systems, a central result is that the liquid contact angle is independent of the grafting density, which implies that the grafting-induced lateral compressive pressure in the brush does not influence its wettability. Although the definition of brush interfacial tensions is complicated by the grafting-induced pressure, the difference in interfacial tension between wet and dry brushes is perfectly well-defined. We confirm explicitly from Young's law that this difference offers an accurate description of the brush wettability. We then explore a method to isolate the grafting-induced contribution to the lateral pressure, assuming the interfacial tension to be independent of grafting density. This scenario indeed allows to disentangle interfacial and grafting effects for a broad range of parameters, except close to the mixing point. We separately discuss the latter case in the light of autophobic dewetting.

We present a study of the structure and differential capacitance of electric double layers of aqueous electrolytes. We consider Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) composed of spherical cations and anions in a dielectric continuum confined between a planar cathode and anode. The model system includes steric as well as Coulombic ion-ion and ion-electrode interactions. We compare results of computationally expensive, but "exact", Brownian Dynamics (BD) simulations with approximate, but cheap, calculations based on classical Density Functional Theory (DFT). Excellent overall agreement is found for a large set of system parameters $-$ including variations in concentrations, ionic size- and valency-asymmetries, applied voltages, and electrode separation $-$ provided the differences between the canonical ensemble of the BD simulations and the grand-canonical ensemble of DFT are properly taken into account. In particular a careful distinction is made between the differential capacitance $C_N$ at fixed number of ions and $C_μ$ at fixed ionic chemical potential. Furthermore, we derive and exploit their thermodynamic relations. In the future these relations are also useful for comparing and contrasting.

The contribution of Brownian motion to the stress in a colloidal suspension

Abstract:
The deviatoric stresses of colloidal suspensions are routinely calculated using the expression introduced by Batchelor [J. Fluid Mech. 83, 97--117 (1977)]. We show by example that the central feature in its derivation, the thermodynamic force driving particles down the density gradient, is inconsistent with the motion of the colloids. A new expression for the stress is proposed.

Theory and simulation of Brownian colloids suspended in an implicit solvent, with the hydrodynamics of the fluid accounted for by effective interactions between the colloids, are shown to yield a marked and hitherto unobserved discrepancy between the viscosity calculated from the average shear stress under an imposed shear rate in the Stokesian regime and the viscosity extracted by the Green-Kubo formalism from the auto-correlations of thermal stress fluctuations in quiescent equilibrium. We show that agreement between both methods is recovered by accounting for the fluctuating Brownian stresses on the colloids, complementing and related to the traditional fluctuating Brownian forces and torques through an extended fluctuation-dissipation theorem based on the hydrodynamic grand resistance matrix. Time-averaging of the fluctuating terms gives rise to novel non-fluctuating stresslets. Brownian Dynamics simulations of spheroidal particles illustrate the necessity of these fluctuating and non-fluctuating contributions to obtaining consistent viscosities.
