Fusion reactors are limited by the magnetic field available to confine their plasma. The commercial fusion industry uses the larger magnetic field and higher operating temperature of the cuprate superconductor $\mathbf{YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}}$ (YBCO) in order to confine their plasma into a dense volume. A superconductor is a macroscopic quantum state that is protected from the metallic (resistive) state by an energy gap. Unfortunately, YBCO has an anisotropic gap, known as D-wave because it has the shape of a $\mathbf{d_{x^2-y^2}}$ chemical orbital. This D-wave gap means that poly-crystalline wire cannot be made because a few degree misalignment between grains in the wire leads to a drastic loss in its supercurrent carrying ability, and thereby its magnetic field limit. The superconductor industry has responded by growing nearly-single-crystal superconducting YBCO films on carefully prepared substrate tapes kilometers in length. Heroic development programs have made such tapes commercially available, but they are very expensive and delicate. MRI magnet superconductors, such as $\mathbf{NbTi}$ and $\mathbf{Nb_{3}Sn}$, are formed into poly-crystalline wires because they have an isotropic gap in the shape of an s chemical orbital (called S-wave) that makes them insensitive to grain misalignment. However, these materials are limited to lower magnetic fields and liquid-He temperatures. Here, we modified YBCO by do** the Y site with Ca and Ce atoms to form $\mathbf{(Y_{1-x-y}Ca_{x}Ce_{y})Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}}$, and show evidence that it changes to an S-wave gap. Its superconducting transition temperature, $\mathbf{T_c}$, of $\mathbf{\sim 70K}$, while lower than that of D-wave YBCO at $\mathbf{\sim 90K}$, is easily maintained using common, economic cryogenic equipment.

The leading order nonlinear (NL) susceptibility, $χ_3$, in a paramagnet is negative and diverges as $T \rightarrow 0$. This divergence is destroyed when spins correlate and the NL response provides unique insights into magnetic order. Dimensionality, exchange interaction, and preponderance of quantum effects all imprint their signatures in the NL magnetic response. Here, we study the NL susceptibilities in the proximate Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ which differs from the expected antiferromagnetic behavior. For $T< T_c$ = 7.5 K and field $B$ in the ab-plane, we obtain contrasting NL responses in low ($<$ 2 ${T}$) and high field regions. For low fields the NL behavior is dominated by a quadratic response (positive $χ_2$), which shows a rapid rise below $T_c$. This large $χ_2 >0$ implies a broken sublattice symmetry of magnetic order at low temperatures. Classical Monte Carlo (CMC) simulations in the standard ${K-H-Γ}$ model secure such a quadratic ${B}$ dependence of ${M}$, only for ${T}$ $\approx$ ${T}_c$ with $χ_2$ being zero as ${T}$ $\rightarrow$ 0. It is also zero for all temperatures in exact diagonalization calculations. On the other hand, we find an exclusive cubic term ($χ_3$) describes the high field NL behavior well. $χ_3$ is large and positive both below and above ${T}_c$ crossing zero only for ${T}$ $>$ 50 K. In contrast, for $B$~$\parallel$~c-axis, no separate low/high field behaviors is measured and only a much smaller $χ_3$ is apparent.

We report on the anomalous magnetization dynamics of the cycloidally-modulated spin textures under the influence of uniaxial anisotropy in multiferroic $\mathrm{GaV_4S_8}$. The temperature and field dependence of the linear ac susceptibility [$χ_{1ω}^{\prime}(T,H)$], ac magnetic loss [$χ_{1ω}^{\prime\prime}(T,H)$], and nonlinear ac magnetic response [$M_{3ω}(T,H)$] are examined across the magnetic phase diagram in the frequency range $f = 10-10000$ Hz. According to recent theory, skyrmion vortices under axial crystal symmetry are confined along specific orientations, resulting in enhanced robustness against oblique magnetic fields and altered spin dynamics. We characterize the magnetic response of each spin texture and find that the dynamic rigidity of the Néel skyrmion lattice appears enhanced compared to Bloch-type skyrmions in cubic systems, even in the multidomain state. Anomalous $M_{3ω}$ and strong dissipation emerge over the same phase regime where strong variations in the cycloid pitch were observed on lowering temperature in recent small-angle neutron scattering experiments [White et al., Phys. Rev. B 97, 020401(R) (2018)]. Here, we show that strong anisotropy also drives an extended crossover of the zero-field cycloid texture in $\mathrm{GaV_4S_8}$. The frequency dependence of these dynamic signatures is consistent with that of a robust anharmonic spin texture exhibiting a correlated domain arrangement. The results underpin the essential role of magnetic anisotropy in enhancing the rigidity of topological spin textures for diverse applications.

Tripling of Tc was observed in bulk Al-Al2O3 core-shell metamaterials. A theoretical model based on the Maxwell-Garnett approximation provides a microscopic explanation of this effect in terms of electron-electron pairing mediated by a hybrid plasmon-phonon excitation. We report the first observation of this excitation in Al-Al2O3 core-shell metamaterials using inelastic neutron scattering. We present a comprehensive study of the magnetization dynamics and phase evolution in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$, which realizes a chiral soliton lattice (CSL). The magnetic field dependence of the ac magnetic response is analyzed for five harmonic components, $M_{nω}(H)$ $(n =1-5)$, using a phase sensitive measurement over a frequency range, $f = 11 - 10,000$ Hz. At a critical field, the modulated CSL continuously evolves from a helicity-rich to a ferromagnetic domain-rich structure, where the crossover is revealed by the onset of an anomalous nonlinear magnetic response that coincides with extremely slow dynamics. The behavior is indicative of the formation of a spatially coherent array of large ferromagnetic domains which relax on macroscopic time-scales. The frequency dependence of the ac magnetic loss displays an asymmetric distribution of relaxation times across the highly nonlinear CSL regime, which shift to shorter time-scales with increasing temperature. We experimentally resolve the tricritical point at $T_{TCP}$ in a temperature regime above the ferromagnetic Curie temperature which separates the linear and nonlinear regimes of the CSL at the phase transition. A comprehensive phase diagram is constructed which summarized the features of the field and temperature dependence of the magnetic crossovers and phase transitions in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$.

One of the most important goals of condensed matter physics is materials by design, i.e. the ability to reliably predict and design materials with a set of desired properties. A striking example is the deterministic enhancement of the superconducting properties of materials. Recent experiments have demonstrated that the metamaterial approach is capable of achieving this goal, such as tripling the critical temperature Tc in Al-Al2O3 epsilon near zero (ENZ) core-shell metamaterial superconductors. However, transport properties of such metamaterials remained much worse compared to conventional superconductors. Here, we demonstrate that an Al/Al2O3 hyperbolic metamaterial geometry is capable of a similar Tc enhancement, while having superior transport and magnetic properties compared to the core-shell metamaterial superconductors. This result opens up numerous new possibilities for metamaterial enhancement of Tc in other practically important simple superconductors, such as niobium and MgB2. It also indicates that the recently discovered hyperbolic properties of high Tc superconductors may play considerable role in superconductivity enhancement in cuprates.

Reports of metallic behavior in two-dimensional (2D) systems such as high mobility metal-oxide field effect transistors, insulating oxide interfaces, graphene, and MoS2 have challenged the well-known prediction of Abrahams, et al. that all 2D systems must be insulating. The existence of a metallic state for such a wide range of 2D systems thus reveals a wide gap in our understanding of 2D transport that has become more important as research in 2D systems expands. A key to understanding the 2D metallic state is the metal-insulator transition (MIT). In this report, we demonstrate the existence of a disorder induced MIT in functionalized graphene, a model 2D system. Magneto-transport measurements show that weak-localization overwhelmingly drives the transition, in contradiction to theoretical assumptions that enhanced electron-electron interactions dominate. These results provide the first detailed picture of the nature of the transition from the metallic to insulating states of a 2D system.

The special processing includes deposition of a silver coating and laser micromachining; Ag do** and enhanced oxygen are observed in the resultant surface layer. The transition, whether measured resistively or by magnetic field expulsion, is broad. When the transition is registered by resistive methods, the critical temperature is markedly reduced when the measuring current is increased. The resistance disappears by about 190K. The highest value of Tc registered by magneto-optical visualization is about 220K and even higher values (up to 250K) are indicated from the SQUID-magnetometer measurements.

We present a systematic analysis of point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectra for ferromagnetic materials, using both modeling and experimental data. We consider the relationship between ballistic and diffusive transport, the effect of different transport regimes on spin polarization measurements, and the importance of unambiguous identification of the type of transport regime. We find that in a realistic parameter range, the analysis of PCAR spectra of purely diffusive character by a ballistic model yield approximately the same (within ~3%) values of the spin polarization and the barrier strength Z larger by ~ 0.5-0.6. We also consider the dependence of polarization values on Z, and have shown by simple modeling that letting the superconducting gap vary as an adjustable parameter can result in a spurious dependence of the spin-polarization Pc on Z. At the same time we analyzed the effects of finite Z on the apparent value of Pc measured by the PCAR technique, using a large number of examples from both our own measurements and from the literature. We conclude that there is a system-dependent variation in Pc (Z), presumably due to spin-flip scattering at the interface. However, the exact type of this dependence is hard to determine with any statistical certainty.

Using the point contact Andreev reflection technique, we have carried out a systematic study of the spin polarization in the colossal magnetoresistive manganite, La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$} (LSMO). Surprisingly, we observed a significant increase in the current spin polarization with the residual resistivity. This counterintuitive trend can be understood as a transition from ballistic to diffusive transport in the contact. Our results strongly suggest that LSMO does have minority spin states at the Fermi level. However, since its current spin polarization is much higher than that of the density of states, this material can mimic the behavior of a true half-metal in transport experiments. Based on our results we call this material a {\it transport} half-metal.

We present measurements of the transport spin polarization of Ni_xFe_{1-x} (0<x<1) using the recently-developed Point Contact Andreev Reflection technique, and compare them with our first principles calculations of the spin polarization for this system. Surpisingly, the measured spin polarization is almost composition-independent. The results clearly demonstrate that the sign of the transport spin polarization does not coincide with that of the difference of the densities of states at the Fermi level. Calculations indicate that the independence of the spin polarization of the composition is due to compensation of density of states and Fermi velocity in the s- and d- bands.
