A new generalization of shifted thin plate splines
$$\varphi(x)=(c^{2d}+||x||^{2d})\log\left(c^{2d}+||x||^{2d}\right),\qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^n, d\in \mathbb{N}, c>0$$ is presented to increase the accuracy of quasi-interpolation further. With the restriction to Euclidean spaces of even dimensionality, the generalization can be used to generate a quasi-Lagrange operator that reproduces all polynomials of degree $n+2d-1$. It thus complements the case of the newly proposed generalized multiquadric $\varphi(x)=\sqrt{c^{2d}+||x||^{2d}},\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^n, d\in \mathbb{N}, c>0$, which is restricted to odd dimensions \cite{ortmann}. This generalization improves the approximation order by a factor of $\mathcal{O}\left(h^{2(d-1)}\right)$, where $d=1$ represents the classical thin plate spline. The results are then compared with the theoretical optimal approximation from the shift-invariant space generated by these functions. Moreover, we introduce a new class of inverse multiquadrics $$\varphi(x)=\left(c^λ+||x||^λ\right)^β,\qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^n, λ\in\mathbb{R},β\in \mathbb{R}\backslash\mathbb{N}, c>0. $$ We provide an explicit representation of the generalized Fourier transform and discuss its asymptotic behaviour near the origin. Particular emphasis is placed on the case where $λ$ and $β$ are both negative. It is demonstrated that, in dimensions $n\geq3$, it is possible to build a quasi-Lagrange operator that reproduces all polynomials of degree $n-3$ when $n$ is even and of degree $\frac{n-1}{2}$ when n is odd. Furthermore, the uniform approximation error is given by $\mathcal{O}\left(h^{n-2}\log(1/h)\right)$ for $n$ even and $\mathcal{O}\left(h^{\frac{n-3}{2}}\right)$ for $n$ odd. Here, $h>0$ denotes the fill distance.

To meet the requirements of modern production, industrial communication increasingly shifts from wired fieldbus to wireless 5G communication. Besides tremendous benefits, this shift introduces severe novel risks, ranging from limited reliability over new security vulnerabilities to a lack of accountability. To address these risks, we present approaches to (i) prevent attacks through authentication and redundant communication, (ii) detect anomalies and jamming, and (iii) respond to detected attacks through device exclusion and accountability measures.

With the restriction to Euclidean spaces of odd dimensionality, the generalization can be used to generate a quasi-Lagrange operator that reproduces all polynomials of degree $2d-1$. In contrast to the classical multiquadric, the convergence rate of the quasi-interpolation operator can be significantly improved by a factor $h^{2d-n-1}$, where $h>0$ represents the grid spacing. Among other things, we compute the generalized Fourier transform of this new multiquadric function. Finally, an infinite regular grid is employed to analyse the properties of the aforementioned generalization in detail.

Corporate Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) enable users to work from home or while traveling. At the same time, VPNs are tied to a company's network infrastructure, forcing users to install proprietary clients for network compatibility reasons. VPN clients run with high privileges to encrypt and reroute network traffic. Thus, bugs in VPN clients pose a substantial risk to their users and in turn the corporate network. Cisco, the dominating vendor of enterprise network hardware, offers VPN connectivity with their AnyConnect client for desktop and mobile devices. While past security research primarily focused on the AnyConnect Windows client, we show that Linux and iOS are based on different architectures and have distinct security issues. Our reverse engineering as well as the follow-up design analysis and fuzzing reveal 13 new vulnerabilities. Seven of these are located in the Linux client. The root cause for privilege escalations on Linux is anchored so deep in the client's architecture that it only got patched with a partial workaround. A similar analysis on iOS uncovers three AnyConnect-specific bugs as well as three general issues in iOS network extensions, which apply to all kinds of VPNs and are not restricted to AnyConnect.

Finding central nodes is a fundamental problem in network analysis. Betweenness centrality is a well-known measure which quantifies the importance of a node based on the fraction of shortest paths going though it. Due to the dynamic nature of many today's networks, algorithms that quickly update centrality scores have become a necessity. For betweenness, several dynamic algorithms have been proposed over the years, targeting different update types (incremental- and decremental-only, fully-dynamic). In this paper we introduce a new dynamic algorithm for updating betweenness centrality after an edge insertion or an edge weight decrease. Our method is a combination of two independent contributions: a faster algorithm for updating pairwise distances as well as number of shortest paths, and a faster algorithm for updating dependencies. Whereas the worst-case running time of our algorithm is the same as recomputation, our techniques considerably reduce the number of operations performed by existing dynamic betweenness algorithms.

Force-directed layout methods constitute the most common approach to draw general graphs. Among them, stress minimization produces layouts of comparatively high quality but also imposes comparatively high computational demands. We propose a speed-up method based on the aggregation of terms in the objective function. It is akin to aggregate repulsion from far-away nodes during spring embedding but transfers the idea from the layout space into a preprocessing phase. An initial experimental study informs a method to select representatives, and subsequent more extensive experiments indicate that our method yields better approximations of minimum-stress layouts in less time than related methods.
