Using a quantum processor to embed and process classical data enables the generation of correlations between variables that are inefficient to represent through classical computation. A fundamental question is whether these correlations could be harnessed to enhance learning performances on real datasets. Here, we report the use of a neutral atom quantum processor comprising up to $32$ qubits to implement machine learning tasks on graph-structured data. To that end, we introduce a quantum feature map to encode the information about graphs in the parameters of a tunable Hamiltonian acting on an array of qubits. Using this tool, we first show that interactions in the quantum system can be used to distinguish non-isomorphic graphs that are locally equivalent. We then realize a toxicity screening experiment, consisting of a binary classification protocol on a biochemistry dataset comprising $286$ molecules of sizes ranging from $2$ to $32$ nodes, and obtain results which are comparable to those using the best classical kernels. Using techniques to compare the geometry of the feature spaces associated with kernel methods, we then show evidence that the quantum feature map perceives data in an original way, which is hard to replicate using classical kernels.

Abstract:
A single $^{40}$Ca ion is confine in the harmonic potential of a Paul trap and cooled to a temperature of a few mK, with a wave packet of sub-m spatial and sub-m/s velocity uncertainty. Deterministically extracted from the Paul trap, the single ion is propagating over a distance of 0.27 m and detected. By engineering the ion extraction process on the initial wave packet, theoretically modeling the ion trajectories, and studying experimentally the time-of-flight distribution, we directly infer the state of the previously trapped ion. This analysis allows for accurate remote sensing of the previous motional excitation in the trap potential, both coherently or incoherently. Our method paves a way to extract, manipulate and design quantum wave packets also outside of the Paul trap.

In this paper, we measure the spectrum of light scattered by a cold atomic cloud driven by a strong laser beam. The experimental technique is based on heterodyne spectroscopy coupled to single-photon detectors and intensity correlations. At resonance, we observe the Mollow triplet. The experimental technique is based on heterodyne spectroscopy coupled to single-photon detectors and intensity correlations. At resonance, we observe the Mollow triplet. This spectrum is quantitatively compared to the theoretical one, emphasizing the influence of the temperature of the cloud and the finite-size of the laser beam. Off resonance measurements are also done showing a very good agreement with theory.

Abstract:
A simplified theory for the wavepackets of the photons emitted during the read process of a quantum memory formed by cold atoms is provided. We arrive at analytical expressions for the single- and double-photon emissions, evidencing superradiant features in both cases. In the two-photon case, both photons are emitted in the same spatiotemporal mode, characterizing a superradiant emission of a Fock…

Experiments confirm the theoretical predictions with a satisfactory agreement.

We demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally, the generation of hexapartite modal entanglement by the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating above the oscillation threshold. We show that the OPO generates a rich structure of entanglement among sets of six optical sideband modes interacting through the non-linear crystal. The class of quantum states thus produced can be controlled by a single parameter, the power of the external laser that pumps the system. Our platform allows for the generation of massive entanglement among many optical modes with well defined but vastly different frequencies, potentially bridging nodes of a multicolor quantum network.

Abstract:
We measure the complete quantum state for six modes of the electromagnetic field produced by an optical parametric oscillator. The investigation involves the sideband of the intense pump, signal, and idler fields generated by stimulated parametric downconversion inside a triply resonant optical resonator. We develop a theoretical model to successfully interpret the experimental results. The model…

We develop a theoretical model to successfully interpret the experimental results. The model takes into account the coupling of the field modes to the phonon bath of the nonlinear crystal, clearly showing the roles of different physical effects in sha** the structure of the quantum correlations between the six optical modes.

We consider the quantum processor based on a chain of trapped ions to propose an architecture wherein the motional degrees of freedom of trapped ions (position and momentum) could be exploited as the computational Hilbert space. We adopt a continuous-variables approach to develop a toolbox of quantum operations to manipulate one or two vibrational modes at a time. Together with the intrinsic non-linearity of the qubit degree of freedom, employed to mediate the interaction between modes, arbitrary manipulation and readout of the ionic wave function could be achieved.
