This work uses optical tools such as thermography to analyze and study the Mpemba effect on drops. We analyze times and contact angle changes with temperature with an easily controlled experiment. This work contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding the Mpemba Effect, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and experimental rigor to unravel the complexities of this intriguing phenomenon. A deeper understanding of the Mpemba Effect enhances our knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics and opens avenues for practical applications in fields such as cryopreservation, meteorology, and materials science.

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission measured light from stars in ~85% of the sky throughout its two-year primary mission, resulting in millions of TESS 30-minute cadence light curves to analyze in the search for transiting exoplanets. To search this vast dataset, we aim to provide an approach that is both computationally efficient, produces highly performant predictions, and minimizes the required human search effort. We present a convolutional neural network that we train to identify short period variables. To make a prediction for a given light curve, our network requires no prior target parameters identified using other methods. Our network performs inference on a TESS 30-minute cadence light curve in ~5ms on a single GPU, enabling large scale archival searches. We present a collection of 14156 short-period variables identified by our network. The majority of our identified variables fall into two prominent populations, one of short-period main sequence binaries and another of Delta Scuti stars. Our neural network model and related code is additionally provided as open-source code for public use and extension.

NEWFOCUS is an EU COST Action targeted at exploring radical solutions that could influence the design of future wireless networks. The project aims to address some of the challenges associated with optical wireless communication (OWC) and to establish it as a complementary technology to the radio frequency (RF)-based wireless systems in order to meet the demanding requirements of the fifth generation (5G) and the future sixth generation (6G) backhaul and access networks. Only 6G will be able to widely serve the exponential growth in connected devices (i.e., more than 500 billion) in 2030, real-time holographic communication, future virtual reality, etc. Space is emerging as the new frontier in 5 and 6G and beyond communication networks, where it offers high-speed wireless coverage to remote areas both in lands and sees. This activity is supported by the recent development of low-altitude Earth orbit satellite mega-constellations. The focus of this 2nd White Paper is on the use of OWC as an enabling technology for medium- and long-range links for deployment in (i) smart-cities and intelligent transportation systems; (ii) first- and last-mile access and backhaul/fronthaul wireless networks; (iii) hybrid free-space optics/RF adaptive wireless connections; (iv) space-to-ground, inter-satellite, ground-to-air, and air-to-air communications; and (v) underwater communications.

Biosynthesis of four samples of colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles is achieved using hydroalcoholic extract and three different separated compounds of the plant Bacopa procumbens. The nonlinear optical properties of each sample are characterized with the Z-scan technique. In all cases, the Z-scan curves indicate a negative or self-defocusing response, which is mainly attributed to thermal effects. Among the four samples, the hydroalcoholic extract was noted to have the highest nonlinear optical response and was selected to demonstrate the formation of self-collimated beams (SCBs). This kind of beams are obtained when a convergent CW laser, with only few tens of milliwatts of optical power, is introduced into the sample and induces a negative-lens effect that shifts the focal spot forward. As a result, the otherwise highly focused beam propagate with little divergence over lengths of up to 10mm. Moreover, an SCB is capable of controlling and steering a weak probe beam of a different wavelength, since the probe experiences the lensing induced by the pump. Noteworthy, the response time of the material was found to be less than 0.07s, which makes it a plausible candidate for photonic applications.
