Dynamical effects on healthy brains and brains affected by tumor are investigated via numerical simulations. The brains are modeled as multilayer networks consisting of neuronal oscillators, whose connectivities are extracted from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. The numerical results demonstrate that the healthy brain presents chimera-like states where regions with high white matter concentrations in the direction connecting the two hemispheres act as the coherent domain, while the rest of the brain presents incoherent oscillations. To the contrary, in brains with destructed structure traveling waves are produced initiated at the region where the tumor is located. These areas act as the pacemaker of the waves swee** across the brain. The numerical simulations are performed using two neuronal models: a) the FitzHugh-Nagumo model and b) the Leaky Integrate-and-Fire model. Both models give consistent results regarding the chimera-like oscillations in healthy brains and the pacemaker effect in the tumorous brains. These results are considered as a starting point for further investigation in the detection of tumors with small sizes before becoming discernible on the MRI recordings, as well as in tumor development and evolution.

Relay synchronization in complex networks is characterized by the synchronization of remote parts of the network due to their interaction via a relay. In multilayer networks, distant layers that are not connected directly can synchronize due to signal propagation via relay layers. In this work, we investigate relay synchronization of partial synchronization patterns like chimera states in three-layer networks of interacting FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators. We demonstrate that the phenomenon of relay synchronization is robust to topological random inhomogeneities of small-world type in the layer networks. We show that including randomness in the connectivity structure either of the remote network layers, or of the relay layer, increases the range of interlayer coupling strength where relay synchronization can be observed.

Relay synchronization between distant layers which are not directly connected, but only via a relay layer, can be observed in multiplex networks. We study three-layer networks of discrete logistic maps, where each individual layer is a nonlocally coupled ring, and demonstrate scenarios of relay synchronization of complex patterns in the outer layers which interact via an intermediate layer. We find regimes of relay synchronization for chimera states, i.e., patterns of coexisting coherent and incoherent domains, and a transition from phase chimeras to amplitude chimeras for increasing inter-layer coupling. We determine analytically the approximate critical coupling strengths for the existence of phase chimeras.

In particular, we focus on the interplay of time delay in the coupling term and the network topology. In the parameter plane of coupling strength and delay time we find tongue-like regions of existence of chimera states alternating with regions of coherent dynamics. We show analytically and numerically that the period of the synchronized dynamics as a function of delay is characterized by a sequence of piecewise linear branches. In between these branches various chimera states and other partial synchronization patterns are induced by the time delay. By varying the time delay one can deliberately choose and stabilize desired spatio-temporal patterns.

A simple realization of such a system is a triplex network where a relay layer in the middle, which is generally not synchronized, acts as a transmitter between two outer layers. We establish time delay in the inter-layer coupling as a powerful tool to control various partial synchronization patterns, in particular chimera states, i.e., complex patterns of coexisting coherent and incoherent domains. We demonstrate that the three-layer structure of the network allows for synchronization of the coherent domains of chimera states in the first layer with their counterparts in the third layer, whereas the incoherent domains either remain desynchronized or synchronized. By varying the topology of the relay layer, we study its influence on the remote synchronization in the outer layers. As model dynamics we use the paradigmatic FitzHugh-Nagumo system.

We study networks of nonlocally coupled logistic maps and analyze systematically how the dilution of the network links influences the appearance of chimera patterns. The network connectivities are constructed using an iterative Cantor algorithm to generate fractal (hierarchical) connectivities. Increasing the hierarchical level of iteration, we compare the resulting spatiotemporal patterns. We demonstrate that a high clustering coefficient and symmetry of the base pattern promotes chimera states, and asymmetric connectivities result in complex nested chimera patterns.

The interplay of synchrony and asynchrony in complex brain networks is an important aspect in studies of both brain function and disease. We analyse the collective dynamics of FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons in complex networks motivated by its potential application to epileptology and epilepsy surgery. We compare two topologies: an empirical structural neural connectivity derived from diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and a mathematically constructed network with modular fractal connectivity. We analyse the properties of chimeras and partially synchronized states, and obtain regions of their stability in the parameter planes. Furthermore, we qualitatively simulate the dynamics of epileptic seizures and study the influence of the removal of nodes on the network synchronizability, which can be useful for applications to epileptic surgery.

Chimera states are complex spatio-temporal patterns that consist of coexisting domains of coherent and incoherent dynamics. We analyse chimera states in networks of Van der Pol oscillators with hierarchical coupling topology. We investigate the stepwise transition from a nonlocal to a hierarchical topology, and propose the network clustering coefficient as a measure to establish a link between the existence of chimera states and the compactness of the initial base pattern of a hierarchical topology; we show that a large clustering coefficient promotes the occurrence of chimeras. Depending on the level of hierarchy and base pattern, we obtain chimera states with different numbers of incoherent domains. We investigate the chimera regimes as a function of coupling strength and nonlinearity parameter of the individual oscillators. The analysis of a network with larger base pattern resulting in larger clustering coefficient reveals two different types of chimera states and highlights the increasing role of amplitude dynamics.

We study numerically the development of chimera states in networks of nonlocally coupled oscillators whose limit cycles emerge from a Hopf bifurcation. This dynamical system is inspired from population dynamics and consists of three interacting species in cyclic reactions. The complexity of the dynamics arises from the presence of a limit cycle and four fixed points. When the bifurcation parameter increases away from the Hopf bifurcation the trajectory approaches the heteroclinic invariant manifolds of the fixed points producing spikes, followed by long resting periods. We observe chimera states in this spiking regime as a coexistence of coherence (synchronization) and incoherence (desynchronization) in a one-dimensional ring with nonlocal coupling, and demonstrate that their multiplicity depends both on the system and the coupling parameters. We also show that hierarchical (fractal) coupling topologies induce traveling multichimera states. The speed of motion of the coherent and incoherent parts along the ring is computed through the Fourier spectra of the corresponding dynamics.

We examine how the character of the individual elements influences chimera states by studying networks of nonlocally coupled Van der Pol oscillators. Varying the bifurcation parameter of the Van der Pol system, we can interpolate between regular sinusoidal and strongly nonlinear relaxation oscillations, and demonstrate that more pronounced nonlinearity induces multi-chimera states with multiple incoherent domains. We show that the stability regimes for multi-chimera states and the mean phase velocity profiles of the oscillators change significantly as the nonlinearity becomes stronger. Chimera states are complex spatio-temporal patterns that consist of coexisting domains of spatially coherent and incoherent dynamics. This counterintuitive phenomenon was first observed in systems of identical oscillators with symmetric coupling topology. Can one overcome these limitations? To address this question, we discuss the robustness of chimera states in networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators. Considering networks of inhomogeneous elements with regular coupling topology, and networks of identical elements with irregular coupling topologies, we demonstrate that chimera states are robust with respect to these perturbations, and analyze their properties as the inhomogeneities increase. We find that modifications of coupling topologies cause qualitative changes of chimera states: additional random links induce a shift of the stability regions in the system parameter plane, gaps in the connectivity matrix result in a change of the multiplicity of incoherent regions of the chimera state, and hierarchical geometry in the connectivity matrix induces nested coherent and incoherent regions.

Since then, chimeras were found in numerous theoretical and experimental studies and more recently in models of neuronal dynamics as well. In this work, we consider a generic model for a saddle-node bifurcation on a limit cycle representative for neural excitability type I. We obtain chimera states with multiple coherent regions (clustered chimeras/multi-chimeras) depending on the distance from the excitability threshold, the range of nonlocal coupling as well as the coupling strength. We report on a novel form of these states, found in a widely used model of a limit-cycle oscillator if one goes beyond the limit of weak coupling typical for phase oscillators. Then patches of synchronized dynamics appear within the incoherent domain giving rise to a multi-chimera state. We find that, depending on the coupling strength and range, different multi-chimeras arise in a transition from classical chimera states. The additional spatial modulation is due to strong coupling interaction and thus cannot be observed in simple phase-oscillator models.

Depending upon the coupling strength and coupling radius, we find characteristic spatial patterns such as wave-like profiles and study the transition from coherence to incoherence leading to spatial chaos. We analyze the origin of this transition based on numerical simulations and support the results by theoretical derivations identifying a critical coupling strength and a scaling relation of the coherent profiles.
