We prove the hydrodynamic limit for a one-dimensional harmonic chain of interacting atoms with a random flip of the momentum sign. The system is open: at the left boundary it is attached to a heat bath at temperature $T_-$, while at the right endpoint it is subject to an action of a force which reads as $\bar F + \frac 1{\sqrt n} \widetilde{\mathcal F} (n^2 t)$, where $\bar F \ge0$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal F}(t)$ is a periodic function. Here $n$ is the size of the microscopic system. Under a diffusive scaling of space-time, we prove that the empirical profiles of the two locally conserved quantities - the volume stretch and the energy - converge, as $n\to+\infty$, to the solution of a non-linear diffusive system of conservative partial differential equations with a Dirichlet type and Neumann boundary conditions on the left and the right endpoints, respectively.

We derive a macroscopic heat equation for the temperature of a pinned harmonic chain subject to a periodic force at its right side and in contact with a heat bath at its left side.
The microscopic dynamics in the bulk is given by the Hamiltonian equation of motion plus a reversal of the velocity of a particle occurring independently for each particle at exponential times, with rate $γ$. The latter produces a finite heat conductivity. Starting with an initial probability distribution for a chain of $n$ particles we compute the local temperature given by the expected value of the local energy and current. Scaling space and time diffusively yields, in the $n\to+\infty$ limit, the heat equation for the macroscopic temperature profile $T(t,u),$ $t>0$, $u \in [0,1]$. It is to be solved for initial conditions $T(0,u)$ and specified $T(t,0)=T_-$, the temperature of the left heat reservoir and a fixed heat flux $J$, entering the system at $u=1$. $J$ is the work done by the periodic force which is computed explicitly for each $n$.

We prove the approach of the system to a time periodic state and compute the heat current, equal to the time averaged work done on the system, in that state. This work approaches a finite positive value as the length of the chain increases. Rescaling space, the strength and/or the period of the force leads to a macroscopic temperature profile corresponding to the stationary solution of a continuum heat equation with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions.

We prove that at the time scale $N^{1+a}$ the system evolves quasi-statically with a macroscopic density profile given by the entropy solution of the stationary Burgers equation with boundary densities changing in time, determined by the corresponding microscopic boundary rates. We consider two different types of boundary rates: the "Liggett boundaries" that correspond to the projection of the infinite dynamics, and the reversible boundaries, that correspond to the contact with particle reservoirs in equilibrium. The proof is based on the control of the Lax boundary entropy--entropy flux pairs and a coupling argument.

We study the macroscopic profiles of temperature and angular momentum in the stationary state of chains of rotors under a thermo-mechanical forcing applied at the boundaries. These profiles are solutions of a system of diffusive partial differential equations with boundary conditions determined by the thermo-mechanical forcing. Instead of expensive Monte Carlo simulations of the underlying microscopic dynamics, we perform extensive numerical computations based on a finite difference method for the system of partial differential equations describing the macroscopic steady state. We first present a formal derivation of these stationary equations based on a linear response argument and local equilibrium assumptions. We then study various properties of the solutions to these equations. This allows to characterize the regime of parameters leading to uphill energy diffusion -- a situation in which the energy flows in the direction of the gradient of temperature -- and to identify regions of parameters corresponding to a negative energy conductivity (i.e. a positive linear response of the energy current to a gradient of temperature). The macroscopic equations we derive are consistent with some previous results obtained by numerical simulation of the microscopic physical system, which confirms their validity.

The particles are in contact with stochastic heat baths, whose action on the dynamics conserves the volume and the momentum, while energy is exchanged with the heat baths in such way that, in equilibrium, the system is at a given temperature $T$. We study the space empirical profiles of volume stretch and momentum under hyperbolic rescaling of space and time as the size of the system growth to be infinite, with the boundary tension changing slowly in the macroscopic time scale. We prove that the probability distributions of these profiles concentrate on $L^2$-valued weak solutions of the isothermal Euler equations (i.e. the non-linear wave equation, also called p-system), satisfying the boundary conditions imposed by the microscopic dynamics. Furthermore, the weak solutions obtained satisfy the Clausius inequality between the work done by the boundary force and the change of the total free energy in the system. This result includes the shock regime of the system.

The noise is rarefied in the limit, {that corresponds to the hypothesis} that in the macroscopic unit time only a finite number of collisions takes place (Boltzmann-Grad limit). We prove that, after the hyperbolic space-time rescaling, the Wigner distribution, describing the energy density of phonons in space-frequency domain, converges to a positive energy density function $W(t, y, k)$ that evolves according to a linear kinetic equation, with the interface condition at $y=0$ that corresponds to reflection, transmission and absorption of phonons. The paper extends the results of [3], where a thermostatted harmonic chain (with no inter-particle scattering) has been considered.

We establish rigorously that transport is slower than diffusive for a class of disordered one-dimensional Hamiltonian chains. This is done by deriving quantitative bounds on the variance in equilibrium of the energy or particle current, as a function of time. The slow transport stems from the presence of rare insulating regions (Griffiths regions). In many-body disordered quantum chains, they correspond to regions of anomalously high disorder, where the system is in a localized phase. In contrast, we deal with quantum and classical disordered chains where the interactions, usually referred to as anharmonic couplings in classical systems, are sparse. The system hosts thus rare regions with no interactions and, since the chain is Anderson localized in the absence of interactions, the non-interacting rare regions are insulating. Part of the mathematical interest of our model is that it is one of the few non-integrable models where the diffusion constant can be rigorously proven not to be infinite.

Energy transport can be influenced by the presence of other conserved quantities. We consider here diffusive systems where energy and the other conserved quantities evolve macroscopically on the same diffusive space-time scale. In these situations the Fourier law depends also from the gradient of the other conserved quantities. The rotor chain is a classical example of such systems, where energy and angular momentum are conserved. We review here some recent mathematical results about diffusive transport of energy and other conserved quantities, in particular for systems where the bulk Hamiltonian dynamics is perturbed by conservative stochastic terms. The presence of the stochastic dynamics allows to define the transport coefficients (thermal conductivity) and in some cases to prove the local equilibrium and the linear response argument necessary to obtain the diffusive equations governing the macroscopic evolution of the conserved quantities. Temperature profiles and other conserved quantities profiles in the non-equilibrium stationary states can be then understood from the non-stationary diffusive behaviour. We also review some results and open problems on the two step approach (by weak coupling or kinetic limits) to the heat equation, starting from mechanical models with only energy conserved.

The Hamiltonian dynamics in the bulk is perturbed by random exchanges of the neighbouring momenta such that the energy is locally conserved. We prove that in the stationary state the energy and the volume stretch profiles, in large scale limit, converge to the solutions of a diffusive system with Dirichlet boundary conditions. As a consequence the macroscopic temperature stationary profile presents a maximum inside the chain higher than the thermostats temperatures, as well as the possibility of uphill diffusion (energy current against the temperature gradient). Finally, we are also able to derive the non-stationary macroscopic coupled diffusive equations followed by the energy and volume stretch profiles.

We prove existence of $L^2$-weak solutions of a quasilinear wave equation with boundary conditions. This describes the isothermal evolution of a one dimensional non-linear elastic material, attached to a fixed point on one side and subject to a force (tension) applied to the other side. The $L^2$-valued solutions appear naturally when studying the hydrodynamic limit from a microscopic dynamics of a chain of anharmonic springs connected to a thermal bath. The proof of the existence is done using a vanishing viscosity approximation with extra Neumann boundary conditions added. In this setting we obtain a uniform a priori estimate in $L^2$, allowing us to use $L^2$ Young measures, together with the classical tools of compensated compactness. We then prove that the viscous solutions converge to weak solutions of the quasilinear wave equation strongly in $L^p$, for any $p \in [1,2)$, that satisfy, in a weak sense, the boundary conditions. Furthermore, these solutions satisfy the Clausius inequality: the change of the free energy is bounded by the work done by the boundary tension. In this sense they are the correct thermodynamic solutions, and we conjecture their uniqueness.

Ongoing debates have been discussing recent rise in wealth inequality in connection with recent development of active financial markets around the world. Existing literature on wealth distribution connects the origins of wealth inequality with a variety of drivers. Our approach develops a minimalist modelling strategy that combines three featuring mechanisms: active financial markets; individual wealth accumulation; and compound interest structure. We provide mathematical proof that accumulated financial investment returns involve ever-increasing wealth concentration and inequality across individual investors through time. This cumulative effect through space and time depends on the financial accumulation process and holds also under efficient financial markets, which generate some fair investment game that individual investors do repeatedly play through time.

The white noise potential is Gaussian distributed with an arbitrary spatial correlation function and a delta correlation function in time. This is a known result in one dimension (see refs. Fischer, Leschke, Müller and Javannar, Kumar}. The energy of the system is also shown to increase linearly in time. We also prove that for the same white-noise potential model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for $d \geq 1$, the mean square displacement is diffusive growing like $t^{1}$. This behavior on the lattice is consistent with the diffusive behavior observed for similar models in the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with a time-dependent Markovian potential (see ref. Kang, Schenker).

We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat at the origin. In the high frequency limit, we establish the reflection-transmission coefficients for the wave energy for the scattering of the thermostat. To our surprise, even though the thermostat fluctuations are time-dependent, the scattering does not couple wave energy at various frequencies.

We study the hydrodynamic limit for the isothermal dynamics of an anharmonic chain under hyperbolic space-time scaling under varying tension. The temperature is kept constant by a contact with a heat bath, realised via a stochastic momentum-preserving noise added to the dynamics. The noise is designed to be large at the microscopic level, but vanishing in the macroscopic scale. Boundary conditions are also considered: one end of the chain is kept fixed, while a time-varying tension is applied to the other end. We show that the volume stretch and momentum converge (in an appropriate sense) to a weak solution of a system of hyperbolic conservation laws (isothermal Euler equations in Lagrangian coordinates) with boundary conditions. This result includes the shock regime of the system. This is proven by adapting the theory of compensated compactness to a stochastic setting, as developed by J. Fritz in \cite{Fritz1} for thesame model without boundary conditions. Finally, changing the external tension allows us to define thermodynamic isothermal transformations between equilibrium states. We use this to deduce the first and the second principle of Thermodynamics for our model.

We consider a one-dimensional unpinned chain of harmonic oscillators with random masses. We prove that after hyperbolic scaling of space and time the distributions of the elongation, momentum and energy converge to the solution of the Euler equations. Anderson localization decouples the mechanical modes from the thermal modes, allowing the closure of the energy conservation equation even out of thermal equilibrium. This example shows that the derivation of Euler equations rests primarily on scales separation and not on ergodicity. Furthermore, it follows from our proof that the temperature profile does not evolve in any space-time scale.

Here, we prove an upper bound on the trajectorial error $\mathbb{E} \left( \sup_{0 \leq t \leq T} \left| X^1_t - ξ_t \right| \right)$, for any $T > 0$, under a similar set of assumptions. The macroscopic limits of the energy density, momentum and the curvature (or bending) of the chain satisfy a system of evolution equations}. We prove that, in a diffusive space-time scaling, the curvature and momentum evolve following a linear system that corresponds to a damped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. The macroscopic energy density evolves following a non linear diffusive equation. In particular the energy transfer is diffusive in this dynamics. This provides a first rigorous example of a normal diffusion of energy in a one dimensional dynamics that conserves the momentum.

Consequently, the evolution of the system has only three conserved quantities: volume, momentum and energy. We show the existence of two space--time scales on which the en- ergy of the system evolves. On the hyperbolic scale (t$ε$--1,x$ε$--1) the limits of the conserved quantities satisfy a Euler system of equa- tions, while the thermal part of the energy macroscopic profile re- mains stationary. Thermal energy starts evolving at a longer time scale, corresponding to the superdiffusive scaling (t$ε$--3/2, x$ε$--1) and follows a fractional heat equation. We also prove the diffusive scal- ing limit of the Riemann invariants - the so called normal modes, corresponding to the linear hyperbolic propagation.

We obtain macroscopic adiabatic thermodynamic transformations by space-time scalings of a microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics subject to random collisions with the environment. The microscopic dynamics is given by a chain of oscillators subject to a varying tension (external force) and to collisions with external independent particles of "infinite mass". The effect of each collision is to change the sign of the velocity without changing the modulus. This way the energy is conserved by the resulting dynamics. After a diffusive space-time scaling and cross-graining, the profiles of volume and energy converge to the solution of a deterministic diffusive system of equations with boundary conditions given by the applied tension. This defines an irreversible thermodynamic transformation from an initial equilibrium to a new equilibrium given by the final tension applied. Quasi-static reversible adiabatic transformations are then obtained by a further time scaling. Then we prove that the relations between the limit work, internal energy and thermodynamic entropy agree with the first and second principle of thermodynamics.

We study the Green-Kubo (GK) formula $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ for the heat conductivity of an infinite chain of $d$-dimensional finite systems (cells) coupled by a smooth nearest neighbour potential $\varepsilon V$. The uncoupled systems evolve according to Hamiltonian dynamics perturbed stochastically by an energy conserving noise of strength $ξ$. Noting that $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ exists and is finite whenever $ξ> 0$, we are interested in what happens when the strength of the noise $ξ\to 0$. For this, we start in this work by formally expanding $κ(\varepsilon, ξ)$ in a power series in $\varepsilon$, $κ(\varepsilon, ξ) = \varepsilon^2 \sum_{n\ge 2} \varepsilon^{n-2} κ_n (ξ)$ and investigating the (formal) equations satisfied by $κ_n (ξ$. We show in particular that $κ_2 (ξ)$ is well defined when no pinning potential is present, and coincides formally with the heat conductivity obtained in the weak coupling (van Hove) limit, where time is rescaled as $\varepsilon^{-2}t$, for the cases where the latter has been established \cite{LO, DL}. For one-dimensional systems, we investigate $κ_2 (ξ)$ as $ξ\to 0$ in three cases: the disordered harmonic chain, the rotor chain and a chain of strongly anharmonic oscillators. Moreover, we formally identify $κ_2 (ξ)$ with the conductivity obtained by having the chain between two reservoirs at temperature $T$ and $T+δT$, in the limit $δT\to 0$, $N \to \infty$, $\varepsilon \to 0$.
