In this work, the artistic style of the sixteenth century Portuguese artist António Campelo in Alegoria à Prudência is analyzed in order to create a computational tool that allows one to transform any 3D digital sculpture model into an image that resembles the modeled style. From this analysis the problem is divided into two parts: detection and drawing of contour lines and the shading of the scene. Several techniques from Non Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) and from Photorealistic Rendering that can resolve the problem are presented and, based on this study, a possible solution is presented. Each modeled rendering component is then analyzed using image based methods against the proposed artistic style and parameters are adjusted for a closer match. In the final stage a group of people was asked to answer a questionnaire where the similarity between the renderings of different objects and the original style was classified according to their personal opinion. One of our findings is that although the source 3D objects cannot be readily found for a direct comparison, nor can the paper medium with centuries old damage be the same, the comparison of sub -parts of both images of the same topology was still possible validating our method and discarding other styles from the comparison.

Dengue and Zika incidence data and the latest research have raised questions about how dengue vaccine strategies might be impacted by the emergence of Zika virus. Existing antibodies to one virus might temporarily protect or promote infection by the other through antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). With this condition, understanding the dynamics of propagation of these two viruses is of great importance when implementing vaccines. In this work, we analyze the effect of vaccination against one strain, in a two-strain model that accounts for cross-immunity and ADE. Using basic and invasion reproductive numbers, we examined the dynamics of the model and provide conditions to ensure the stability of the disease-free equilibrium. We provide conditions on cross-immunity, ADE and vaccination rate under which the vaccination could ensure the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium. The results indicate scenarios in which vaccination against one strain may improve or worsen the control of the other, as well as contribute to the eradication or persistence of one or both viruses in the population.

We prove that such as gradient term is invariant by the Kazdan-Kramer change of variables. As applications, we ensure the existence of solutions for a new class of $k$-Hessian equation in the sublinear and superlinear cases for Sobolev type growth. The threshold for existence is obtained in some particular cases. In addition, for the Trudinger-Moser type growth regime, we also prove the existence of solutions under either subcritical or critical conditions.

The effective reproduction number, R(t), is a central point in the study of infectious diseases. It establishes in an explicit way the extent of an epidemic spread process in a population. The current estimation methods for the time evolution of R(t), using incidence data, rely on the generation interval distribution, g(τ), which is usually obtained from empirical data or already known distributions from the literature. However, there are systems, especially highly heterogeneous ones, in which there is a lack of data and an adequate methodology to obtain g(τ). In this work, we use mathematical models to bridge this gap. We present a general methodology for obtaining an explicit expression of the reproduction numbers and the generation interval distributions provided by an arbitrary compartmental model. Additionally, we present the appropriate expressions to evaluate those reproduction numbers using incidence data. To highlight the relevance of such methodology, we apply it to the spread of Covid-19 in municipalities of the state of Rio de janeiro, Brazil. Using two meta-population models, we estimate the reproduction numbers and the contributions of each municipality in the generation of cases in all others. Our results point out the importance of mathematical modelling to provide epidemiological meaning of the available data.

Over a wide range, the electrical resistivity of the alloy shows a logarithmic temperature dependence, which simultaneously retains the sensitivity required for practical thermometry while also maintaining a relatively modest and easily-measurable value of resistivity. We characterize the sensitivity of the alloy as a possible thermometer and show that it compares favorably to commercially-available temperature sensors. We experimentally identify that the characteristic logarithmic temperature dependence of the alloy stems from Kondo-like behavior induced by the specific heat treatment it undergoes.

We present an extensive study of the ferromagnetic heavy fermion compound U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$. Measurements of electrical resistivity, specific heat and magnetic properties show that U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ orders ferromagnetically at ambient pressure with a Curie temperature $T_{C} = 6.8 \pm 0.3$ K. The low temperature magnetic behavior of this soft ferromagnet is dominated by the excitation of gapless spin-wave modes. Our results on the transport properties of U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ under pressures up to $2.49$ GPa suggest that U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ has a putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) at $P_c \approx 1.7 \pm 0.02$ GPa. In the ordered phase, ferromagnetic magnons scatter the conduction electrons and give rise to a well defined power law temperature dependence in the resistivity. The coefficient of this term is related to the spin-wave stiffness and measurements of the very low temperature resistivity allow to accompany the behavior of this quantity as the the ferromagnetic QCP is approached. We find that the spin-wave stiffness decreases with increasing pressure implying that the transition to the non-magnetic Fermi liquid state is driven by the softening of the magnons. The observed quantum critical behavior of the magnetic stiffness is consistent with the influence of disorder in our system. At quantum criticality ($P = P_c \approx 1.7 \pm 0.02$ GPa), the resistivity shows the behavior expected for an itinerant metallic system near a ferromagnetic QCP.

We present a thorough characterization of what we believe to be the first significant analysis of the behavior of groups in WhatsApp in the scientific literature. Our characterization of over 270,000 messages and about 7,000 users spanning a 28-day period is done at three different layers. The message layer focuses on individual messages, each of which is the result of specific posts performed by a user. The user layer characterizes the user actions while interacting with a group. The group layer characterizes the aggregate message patterns of all users that participate in a group. We analyze 81 public groups in WhatsApp and classify them into two categories, political and non-political groups according to keywords associated with each group. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we introduce a framework and a number of metrics to characterize the behavior of communication groups in mobile messaging systems such as WhatsApp. Second, our analysis underscores a Zipf-like profile for user messages in political groups. Also, our analysis reveals that Whatsapp messages are multimedia, with a combination of different forms of content. Multimedia content (i.e., audio, image, and video) and emojis are present in 20% and 11.2% of all messages respectively. Political groups use more text messages than non-political groups. Second, we characterize novel features that represent the behavior of a public group, with multiple conversational turns between key members, with the participation of other members of the group.

Superconductivity has been observed in doped SrTiO$_3$ at charge-carrier densities below 10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$, where the density of states at the Fermi level of the itinerant electrons is several orders of magnitude lower than that of conventional metals. In terms of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer description, this implies the existence of an extraordinarily strong interaction driving the formation of Cooper pairs, potentially comparable in order of magnitude to that in some high Tc superconductors. Under suitable conditions the interaction might remain effective at densities approaching metallic densities, leading to the possibility of pair formation at elevated temperatures. Here we investigate the pressure dependence of the resistivity and superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of SrTiO$_3$ at a carrier density near to optimal do**. Our experiments show that Tc collapses rapidly with pressure and hence with increasing frequency of the soft transverse-optical phonon mode connected to the ferroelectric quantum critical point. We show that the superconductivity phase diagram can be understood in terms of the coupling of electrons via two hybrid longitudinal polar modes, based on a model of dipolar fluctuations of the charge carrier-ion system. In particular, we predict that for carrier densities above the order of 10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$, Tc can be strongly enhanced on approaching the ferroelectric quantum critical point, as seen in our measurements of SrTiO$_3$ and as found in many electrically conducting magnetic analogues. However below this density we predict the reverse behaviour, namely that Tc is suppressed on approaching the ferroelectric quantum critical point. Our model is also relevant to superconductivity found in gated ferroelectric quantum critical systems such as KTaO$_3$ and can guide searches for new superconductors in a diversity of materials.

Solving nesting problems or irregular strip packing problems is to position polygons in a fixed width and unlimited length strip, obeying polygon integrity containment constraints and non-overlap** constraints, in order to minimize the used length of the strip. To ensure non-overlap**, we used separation lines. A straight line is a separation line if given two polygons, all vertices of one of the polygons are on one side of the line or on the line, and all vertices of the other polygon are on the other side of the line or on the line. Since we are considering free rotations of the polygons and separation lines, the mathematical model of the studied problem is nonlinear. Therefore, we use the nonlinear programming solver IPOPT (an algorithm of interior points type), which is part of COIN-OR. Computational tests were run using established benchmark instances and the results were compared with the ones obtained with other methodologies in the literature that use free rotation.

We consider our universe as a 3d domain wall embedded in a 5d dimensional Minkowski space-time. We address the problem of inflation and late time acceleration driven by bulk particles colliding with the 3d domain wall. The expansion of our universe is mainly related to these bulk particles. Since our universe tends to be permeated by a large number of isolated structures, as temperature diminishes with the expansion, we model our universe with a 3d domain wall with increasing internal structures. These structures could be unstable 2d domain walls evolving to fermi-balls which are candidates to cold dark matter. The momentum transfer of bulk particles colliding with the 3d domain wall is related to the reflection coefficient. We show a nontrivial dependence of the reflection coefficient with the number of internal dark matter structures inside the 3d domain wall. As the population of such structures increases the velocity of the domain wall expansion also increases. The expansion is exponential at early times and polynomial at late times. We connect this picture with string/M-theory by considering BPS 3d domain walls with structures which can appear through the bosonic sector of a five-dimensional supergravity theory.
