Designing double freeform surfaces for collimated beam sha** with optimal mass transportation and linear assignment problems
Abstract: We propose a method for designing refractive optical elements for collimated beam sha**. In this method, the problem of finding a ray map** is formulated as a linear assignment problem, which is a discrete version of the corresponding mass transportation problem. A method for reconstructing optical surfaces from a computed discrete ray map** is proposed. The method is suitable for designing… ▽ More

Kummer configurations and $S_m-$reflector problems: Hypersurfaces in $\Rn$ with given mean intensity
Abstract: For a congruence of straight lines defined by a hypersurface in $R^{n+1}, n \geq 1,$ and a field of reflected directions created by a point source we define the notion of intensity in a tangent direction and introduce elementary symmetric functions $S_m, m=1, 2,...,n,$ of {\it principal intensities}. The problem of existence and uniqueness of a closed hypersurface with prescribed $S_n$ is the "r… ▽ More

A characterization of revolution quadrics by a system of partial differential equations
Abstract: It is shown that existence of a global solution to a particular nonlinear system of second order partial differential equations on a complete connected Riemannian manifold has topological and geometric implications and that in the domain of positivity of such solution its reciprocal is the radial function of only one of the following rotationally symmetric hypersurfaces in $\Rn$: paraboloid, ell… ▽ More

Uniqueness of starshaped compact hypersurfaces with prescribed $m$-th mean curvature in hyperbolic space
Abstract: Let $ψ$ be a given function defined on a Riemannian space. Under what conditions does there exist a compact starshaped hypersurface $M$ for which $ψ$, when evaluated on $M$, coincides with the $m-$th elementary symmetric function of principal curvatures of $M$ for a given $m$? The corresponding existence and uniqueness problems in Euclidean space have been investigated by several authors in the… ▽ More

Existence of optimal maps in the reflector-type problems
Abstract: In this paper, we consider probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ on a $d$--dimensional sphere in $\Rd, d \geq 1,$ and cost functions of the form $c(\x,\y)=l(\frac{|\x-\y|^2}{2})$ that generalize those arising in geometric optics where $l(t)=-\log t.$ We prove that if $μ$ and $ν$ vanish on $(d-1)$--rectifiable sets, if $|l'(t)|>0,$ $\lim_{t\to 0^+}l(t)=+\infty,$ and $g(t):=t(2-t)(l'(t))^2$ is monotone… ▽ More

Embedding $S^n$ into $R^{n+1}$ with given integral Gauss curvature and optimal mass transport on $S^n$
Abstract: In his book on Convex Polyhedra (section 7.2), A.D. Aleksandrov raised a general question of finding variational statements and proofs of existence of polytopes with given geometric data. The first goal of this paper is to give a variational solution to the problem of existence and uniqueness of a closed convex hypersurface in Euclidean space with prescribed integral Gauss curvature. Our solutio… ▽ More

A Minkowski-style theorem for focal functions of compact convex reflectors
Abstract: This paper continues the study of a class of compact convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space $R^{n+1}, ~n \geq 1$, which are boundaries of compact convex bodies obtained by taking the intersection of (solid) confocal paraboloids of revolution. Such hypersurfaces are called reflectors. In $R^3$ reflectors arise naturally in geometrical optics and are used in design of light reflectors and reflect… ▽ More

Optical design of two-reflector systems, the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem and Fermat's principle
Abstract: It is shown that the problem of designing a two-reflector system transforming a plane wave front with given intensity into an output plane front with prescribed output intensity can be formulated and solved as the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem.
