Transient near-fields around metallic nanotips drive many applications, including the generation of ultrafast electron pulses and their use in electron microscopy. We have investigated the electron emission from a gold nanotip driven by mid-infrared few-cycle laser pulses. We identify a low-energy peak in the kinetic energy spectrum and study its shift to higher energies with increasing laser intensities from $1.7$ to $3.7\cdot10^{11} \mathrm{W}/\mathrm{cm}^2$. The experimental observation of the upshift of the low-energy peak is compared to a simple model and numerical simulations, which show that the decay of the near-field on a nanometer scale results in non-adiabatic transfer of the ponderomotive potential to the kinetic energy of emitted electrons and in turn to a shift of the peak. We derive an analytic expression for the non-adiabatic ponderomotive shift, which, after the previously found quenching of the quiver motion, completes the understanding of the role of inhomogeneous fields in strong-field photoemission from nanostructures.

Attosecond streaking of photoelectrons emitted by extreme ultraviolet light has begun to reveal how electrons behave during their transport within simple crystalline solids. Many sample types within nanoplasmonics, thin-film physics, and semiconductor physics, however, do not have a simple single crystal structure. The electron dynamics which underpin the optical response of plasmonic nanostructures and wide-bandgap semiconductors happen on an attosecond timescale. Measuring these dynamics using attosecond streaking will enable such systems to be specially tailored for applications in areas such as ultrafast opto-electronics. We show that streaking can be extended to this very general type of sample by presenting streaking measurements on an amorphous film of the wide-bandgap semiconductor tungsten trioxide, and on polycrystalline gold, a material that forms the basis of many nanoplasmonic devices. Our measurements reveal the near-field temporal structure at the sample surface, and photoelectron wavepacket temporal broadening consistent with a spread of electron transport times to the surface.

Abstract:
We report the generation and characterization of isolated attosecond XUV and VUV pulses generated simultaneously via HHG driven by few-cycle pulses using an in-line dual gas target system. One gas jet target was operated with Kr gas that optimized HHG in the 15-25 eV photon energy range (VUV), whilst the second gas jet target was operated in Ne gas to optimize the high harmonic generation around 9…

We report the generation and characterization of isolated attosecond XUV and VUV pulses generated simultaneously via HHG driven by few-cycle pulses using an in-line dual gas target system. One gas jet target was operated with Kr gas that optimized HHG in the 15-25 eV photon energy range (VUV), whilst the second gas jet target was operated in Ne gas to optimize the high harmonic generation around 90 eV (XUV). Appropriate filters were used to isolate the required spectral components to synthesize isolated pulses. Sn and In filters were used for the VUV region while a Zr filter was used for the XUV. We characterized both the XUV and VUV pulses independently using the attosecond streaking technique and the LSGPA retrieval algorithm obtaining a 1.7$\pm$0.2 fs pulse using the In filter and a 616$\pm$50 as pulse using Sn, while preserving a 266$\pm$10 as isolated XUV pulse.

We investigated the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stability of a hollow-fiber setup used for high-energy, few-cycle pulse generation. Saturation of the output pulse energy is observed at 0.6 mJ for a 260 um inner-diameter, 1 m long fiber, statically filled with neon, with the pressure adjusted to achieve an output spectrum capable of supporting sub-4fs pulses. The maximum output pulse energy can be increased to 0.8mJ by using either differential pum**, or circularly polarized input pulses. We observe the onset of an ionization-induced CEP instability, which does not increase beyond an input pulse energy of 1.25 mJ due to losses in the fiber caused by ionization. There is no significant difference in the CEP stability with differential pum** compared to static-fill, demonstrating that gas flow in differentially pumped fibers does not degrade the CEP stabilization.
