Abstract:
We investigate the problem of approximating an incomplete preference relation $\succsim$ on a finite set by a complete preference relation. We aim to obtain this approximation in such a way that the choices on the basis of two preferences, one incomplete, the other complete, have the smallest possible discrepancy in the aggregate. To this end, we use the top-difference metric on preferences, and d…

To this end, we use the top-difference metric on preferences, and define a best complete approximation of $\succsim$ as a complete preference relation nearest to $\succsim$ relative to this metric. We prove that such an approximation must be a maximal completion of $\succsim$, and that it is, in fact, any one completion of $\succsim$ with the largest index. Finally, we use these results to provide a sufficient condition for the best complete approximation of a preference to be its canonical completion. This leads to closed-form solutions to the best approximation problem in the case of several incomplete preference relations of interest.

Monotonic Extensions of Lipschitz Maps

Abstract:
We study the problem of extending an order-preserving real-valued Lipschitz map defined on a subset of a partially ordered metric space without increasing its Lipschitz constant and preserving its monotonicity. We show that a certain type of relation between the metric and order of the space, which we call radiality, is necessary and sufficient for such an extension to exist. Radiality is automati…

Radiality is automatically satisfied by the equality relation, so the classical McShane-Whitney extension theorem is a special case of our main characterization result. As applications, we obtain a similar generalization of McShane's uniformly continuous extension theorem, along with some functional representation results for radial partial orders.

Measuring Stochastic Rationality

Abstract:
Our goal is to develop a partial ordering method for comparing stochastic choice functions on the basis of their individual rationality. To this end, we assign to any stochastic choice function a one-parameter class of deterministic choice correspondences, and then check for the rationality (in the sense of revealed preference) of these correspondences for each parameter value. The resulting order…

The resulting ordering detects violations of (stochastic) transitivity as well as inconsistencies between choices from nested menus. We obtain a parameter-free characterization and apply it to some popular stochastic choice models. We also provide empirical applications in terms of two well-known choice experiments.

A class of dissimilarity semimetrics for preference relations
Authors:

Abstract:
We propose a class of semimetrics for preference relations any one of which is an alternative to the classical Kemeny-Snell-Bogart metric. (We take a fairly general viewpoint about what constitutes a preference relation, allowing for any acyclic order to act as one.) We propose a class of semimetrics for preference relations any one of which is an alternative to the classical Kemeny-Snell-Bogart metric. (We take a fairly general viewpoint about what constitutes a preference relation, allowing for any acyclic order to act as one.) These semimetrics are based solely on the implications of preferences for choice behavior, and thus appear more suitable in economic contexts and choice experiments. In our main result, we obtain a fairly simple axiomatic characterization for the class we propose. The apparently most important member of this class (at least in the case of finite alternative spaces), which we dub the top-difference semimetric, is characterized separately. We also obtain alternative formulae for it, and relative to this metric, compute the diameter of the space of complete preferences, as well as the best transitive extension of a given acyclic preference relation. Finally, we prove that our preference metric spaces cannot be isometically embedded in a Euclidean space.

Embedding of Topological Posets in Hyperspaces

Abstract:
We study the problem of topologically order-embedding a given topological poset X in the space of all closed subsets of X which is topologized by the Fell topology and ordered by set inclusion. We show that this can be achieved whenever X is a topological semilattice (resp. lattice) or a topological po-group, and X is locally compact and order-connected (resp. connected). We give limiting examples…

We show that this can be achieved whenever X is a topological semilattice (resp. lattice) or a topological po-group, and X is locally compact and order-connected (resp. connected). We give limiting examples to show that these results are tight, and provide several applications of them. In particular, a locally compact version of the Urysohn-Carruth metrization theorem is obtained, a new fixed point theorem of Tarski-Kantorovich type is proved, and it is found that every locally compact and connected Hausdorff topological lattice is a completely regular ordered space.

We obtain variants of the classical von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility theorem, with and without the completeness axiom, in which the derived Bernoulli utility functions are Lipschitz. The prize space in these results is an arbitrary separable metric space, and the utility functions may be unbounded. The main ingredient of our results is a novel (behavioral) axiom on the underlying preference relations which is satisfied by virtually all stochastic orders. The proof of the main representation theorem is built on the fact that the completion of the Kantorovich-Rubinstein space is the canonical predual of the Banach space of Lipschitz functions that vanish at a fixed point. Two applications are given, one to the theory of non-expected utility theory, and the other to the theory of decision-making under uncertainty.
