We administered the Verbal IQ (VIQ) part of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-III) to the ConceptNet 4 AI system. The test questions (e.g., "Why do we shake hands?") were translated into ConceptNet 4 inputs using a combination of the simple natural language processing tools that come with ConceptNet together with short Python programs that we wrote. The question answering used a version of ConceptNet based on spectral methods. The ConceptNet system scored a WPPSI-III VIQ that is average for a four-year-old child, but below average for 5 to 7 year-olds. Large variations among subtests indicate potential areas of improvement. In particular, results were strongest for the Vocabulary and Similarities subtests, intermediate for the Information subtest, and lowest for the Comprehension and Word Reasoning subtests. Comprehension is the subtest most strongly associated with common sense. The large variations among subtests and ordinary common sense strongly suggest that the WPPSI-III VIQ results do not show that "ConceptNet has the verbal abilities a four-year-old." Rather, children's IQ tests offer one objective metric for the evaluation and comparison of AI systems. Also, this work continues previous research on Psychometric AI.

The energy resolution of PWO crystals and their dependence on the incoming energy has been investigated. The crystals used were first prototype crystals of a new generation, characterized by a higher light yield. Two crystal types with different shape and light yield, manufactured by suppliers in China and Russia, were used. An experiments were performed on two cooled arrays of 3x3 crystals. Photon beams of eight different energies, ranging from 64 MeV to 715 MeV, were directed into the center crystals. Photo Multiplier Tubes were used to read out the response of the scintillators. The energy resolution was calculated using three different methods - FWHM, a two gaussian fit and a right side fit. The two Gaussian method delivered the lowest sigma value and also the lowest energy resolution. The obtained energy resolution for the Russian crystals was 1.61%/sqrt(E)+0.73% and similarly 1.58%/sqrt(E)+4.25% for the Chinese crystals.

The observed polarisation of Lambda hyperons from the inclusive pA -> Lambda X reaction at high energies has previously been well described within the Lund string model through polarised ss quark pair production in the string breaking hadronisation process. This model is here applied to the exclusive pbar p -> Lambdabar Lambda reaction at low energies and compared to available data sets down to an incident beam momentum of 1.835 GeV/c. This required an extension of the diquark scattering model to involve three components: an isotropic part relevant close to threshold, a spectator part and a forward scattering part as in pA -> Lambda X at high energies. The observed angular distributions are then reproduced and, for momentum transfers above |t'| = 0.2 GeV^2, agreement with the measured polarisation is also obtained.

A study has been performed of the reaction pbar p -> 4K using in-flight antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen jet target. The reaction is dominated by the production of a pair of phi mesons. The pbar p -> phi phi cross section rises sharply above threshold and then falls continuously as a function of increasing antiproton momentum. The overall magnitude of the cross section exceeds expectations from a simple application of the OZI rule by two orders of magnitude. In a fine scan around the xi/f_J(2230) resonance, no structure is observed. A limit is set for the double branching ratio B(xi -> pbar p) * B(xi -> phi phi) < 6e-5 for a spin 2 resonance of M = 2.235 GeV and Width = 15 MeV.

The reaction pbar p -> pbar p pi+ pi- has been studied with high statistics at CERN-LEAR with incident pbar momenta from 1.65 to 2.0 GeV/c by the JETSET (PS202) experiment. The aim of this paper is to search for narrow resonances decaying to pbar p. No evidence for such structures is found. In particular, an upper limit for the production of a 2.02 GeV state with a width of Gamma = 20 MeV, having been seen in other hadroproduction experiments, is established. Our results restrict the cross section for such a peak to be below 200 nb at the 95% confidence level.

The pbar p -> Ks Ks -> 4pi+/- cross section was measured at incident antiproton momenta between 0.6 and 1.9 GeV/c using the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). This investigation was part of a systematic study of in-flight antiproton-proton annihilations into two-neutral-meson final states in a search for hadronic resonances. A coarse scan of the pbar p -> Ks Ks cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy between 1.964 and 2.395 GeV/c^2 and a fine scan of the region surrounding the Xi(2220) are presented. Upper limits on the product branching ratio BR(Xi -> pbar p)BR(Xi -> Ks Ks) are determined for a wide range of mass and width assumptions based on the non-observation of the Xi(2220). A rise in the pbar p -> Ks Ks cross section is observed near 2.15 GeV/c^2, which is consistent with the f2(2150) resonance.
