The recent synthesis of ruthenium trihalides Ru$X_3$ ($X$ = Cl, Br, I) has enlarged the set of material candidates for Kitaev spin liquid. The realization of Kitaev model necessitates the formation of $J=1/2$ pseudospins in the octahedral crystal field. We use Ru $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate the evolution of multiplet structures in Ru$X_3$. We identified quasi-elastic magnetic correlations and spin-orbit transitions to the $J=3/2$ states without discernible trigonal splitting, thereby validating the $J=1/2$ description of magnetism in the Ru$X_3$ family. Lineshape broadening in RuI$_3$ provides evidence for its bulk metallicity in the vicinity of a bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator transition. Our results highlight the pivotal role of halogen $p$ orbitals in controlling the electronic properties of Ru$X_3$.

From lithium-ion batteries to high-temperature superconductors, oxide materials have been widely used in electronic devices. However, demands of future technologies require materials beyond oxides, as anion chemistries distinct from oxygen can expand the palette of mechanisms and phenomena, to achieve superior functionalities. Examples include nitride-based wide bandgap semiconductors and halide perovskite solar cells, with MAPbBr3 being a representation revolutionizing photovoltaics research. Here, we demonstrate magnetoelectric behaviour in quasi-two-dimensional halides (K,Rb)3Mn2Cl7 through simultaneous thermal control of electric and magnetic polarizations by exploiting a polar-to-antipolar displacive transition. Additionally, our calculations indicate a possible polarization switching path including a strong magnetoelectric coupling, indicating halides can be excellent platforms to design future multiferroic and ferroelectric devices. We expect our findings to broaden the exploration of multiferroics to non-oxide materials and open access to novel mechanisms, beyond conventional electric/magnetic control, for coupling ferroic orders.

The present studies show that long-range magnetic order takes place in RuBr$_3$ at $\approx$ 34 K. The observations of clear oscillations in the muon time spectra demonstrate the presence of well-defined internal fields at the muon sites. The magnetic ordering appears to be very robust and static suggesting a more conventional nature of magnetic ordering in the RuBr$_3$ system at zero field. Present investigations prove that in RuBr$_3$ the Kitaev interactions are likely to be weakened at zero field in comparison to the $α$-RuCl$_3$ system. This proves that it is possible to tune the Kitaev interactions by replacing Cl with heavier halogen elements such as Br.

We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on hexagonal MnTe, a candidate for an altermagnet with a high critical temperature (TN=307 K). By utilizing photon-energy-tunable ARPES in combination with first-principles calculations, we found that the band structure in the antiferromagnetic phase exhibits a strongly anisotropic band-splitting associated with the time-reversal-symmetry breaking, providing the first direct experimental evidence for the altermagnetic band-splitting. The magnitude of the splitting reaches 0.8 eV at non-high-symmetry momentum points, which is much larger than the spin-orbit gap of ~0.3 eV along the GK high-symmetry cut. The present result paves the pathway toward realizing exotic physical properties associated with the altermagnetic spin-splitting.

In a honeycomb-lattice spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl3, an ultrafast magnetization is induced by circularly polarized excitation below the Mott gap. Photo-carriers play an important role, which are generated by turning down the synergy of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the spin-orbit interaction realizing the insulator state. An ultrafast 6- fs measurement of photo-carrier dynamics and a quantum mechanical analysis clarify the mechanism, according to which the magnetization emerges from a coherent charge motion between different t2g orbitals (dyz-dxz-dxy) of Ru3+ ions. This ultrafast magnetization is weakened in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase, which is opposite to the general tendency that the inverse Faraday effect is larger in AF compounds than in paramagnetic ones. This temperature dependence indicates that the interorbital charge motion is affected by pseudo-spin rotational symmetry breaking in the AF phase.

The iron-based superconductors had a significant impact on condensed matter physics. They have a common structural motif of a two-dimensional square iron lattice and exhibit fruitful physical properties as a strongly correlated electron system. During the extensive investigations, quasi-one-dimensional iron-based spin-ladder compounds attracted much attention as a platform for studying the interplay between magnetic and orbital ordering. In these compounds, BaFe2S3 and BaFe2Se3 were found to exhibit superconductivity under high pressure, having a different crystal and magnetic structure at low temperature. We report a brief review of the iron-based spin-ladder compound and recent studies for BaFe2+d(S1-xSex)3. BaFe2(S0.75 Se0.25)3 is in the vicinity of the boundary of two different magnetic phases and it is intriguing to perform high pressure experiments for studying superconductivity, since effects of large magnetic fluctuations on superconductivity are expected. The effect of iron stoichiometry on the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is also studied by changing the iron concentration in BaFe2+dSe3.

In addition, Pauli paramagnetic behavior was observed in the temperature dependence of a magnetic susceptibility and a nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$. The band structure calculations indicate that contribution of the I 5$p$ components to the low-energy $t_\mathrm{2g}$ bands effectively decreases Coulomb repulsion, leading to semimetallic properties. The physical properties also suggest strong electron correlations in RuI$_3$.

However, the microscopic model describing $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is still debated partly because of a lack of analogue materials for $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, which prevents tracking of electronic properties as functions of controlled interaction parameters. Here, we report a successful synthesis of RuBr$_{3}$. The material RuBr$_{3}$~possesses BiI$_3$-type structure (space group: $R\overline{3}$) where Ru$^{3+}$ form an ideal honeycomb lattice. Although RuBr$_{3}$ has a negative Weiss temperature, it undergoes a zigzag antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}=34$ K, as does $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Our analyses indicate that the Kitaev and non-Kitaev interactions can be modified in ruthenium trihalides by changing the ligand sites, which provides a new platform for exploring Kitaev spin liquids.

The iron-based ladder material BaFe2S3, which superconducts under pressure, exhibits antiferromagnetic order below TN ~ 117K and a weak resistivity anomaly at T* ~ 180K, whose nature remains elusive. Here we report angle-resolved magnetoresistance (MR) and elastoresistance (ER) measurements in BaFe2S3, which reveal distinct changes at T*. We find that MR anisotropy and ER nematic response are both suppressed near T*, implying that an orbital order promoting isotropic electronic states is stabilized at T*. Such an isotropic state below T* competes with the antiferromagnetic order, which is evidenced by the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of nematic fluctuations. In contrast to the cooperative nematic orders in spin and orbital channels in iron pnictides, the present competing orders can provide a new platform to identify the separate roles of orbital and magnetic fluctuations.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on CaIrO$_3$ reveal a prototypical $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospinon continuum, a hallmark of one-dimensional (1D) magnetic systems despite its three-dimensional crystal structure. The experimental spectra compare very well to the calculated magnetic dynamical structure factor of weakly coupled spin-1/2 chains. We attribute the onset of such quasi-1D magnetism to the fundamental difference in the magnetic interactions between the $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospins along the corner- and edge-sharing bonds in CaIrO$_3$.

From thermogravitometoric and one-dimensional electron map analyses, we find two crystal structures of this system, that is, mono-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O~$(x\approx0.56, y\approx1.3)$ and bi-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O~$(x\approx0.56, y\approx3.9)$. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a temperature hysteresis at 200-270 K, which is considered to relate with a formation of a charge order. The antiferromagnetic order at 7-13 K in pristine $α$-RuCl$_3$~ is successfully suppressed down to 2 K in bi-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O, which is sensitive to not only an electronic state of Ru but also an interlayer distance between Ru-Cl planes.

Temperature dependent crystal structures of the quasi-one-dimensional ladder material BaFe2Se3 are examined. Combining the optical second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments and neutron diffraction measurements, we elucidate the crystal structure with Pmn2_1 space group in the low-temperature phase below Ts2 = 400 K, further above Neel temperature. This low-temperature phase loses the spatial inversion symmetry, where a resultant macroscopic polarization emerges along the rung direction. The transition is characterized by block-type lattice distortions with the magneto-striction mechanism. Change in the electrical resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility across the polar-nonpolar transition also suggests a modification of the electronic states reflecting the structural instability. Consistency and discrepancy with the existing theory are discussed.

Spin-state transition, also known as spin crossover, plays a key role in diverse systems, including minerals and biological materials. In theory, the boundary range between the low- and high-spin states is expected to enrich the transition and give rise to unusual physical states. However, no compound that realizes a nearly degenerate critical range as the ground state without requiring special external conditions has yet been experimentally identified. This study reports that, by comprehensive measurements of macroscopic physical properties, X-ray diffractometry, and neutron spectroscopy, the Sc substitution in LaCoO$_3$ destabilizes its nonmagnetic low-spin state and generates an anomalous paramagnetic state accompanied by the enhancement of transport gap and magneto-lattice-expansion as well as the contraction of Co--O distance with the increase of electron site-transfer. These phenomena are not well described by the mixture of conventional low- and high-spin states, but by their quantum superposition occurring on the verge of a spin-state transition. The present study enables us to significantly accelerate the design of new advanced materials without requiring special equipment based on the concept of quantum spin-state criticality.

The x-ray absorption spectra at the Fe L edges for BaFe$_2X_3$ exhibit two components, indicating that itinerant and localized Fe 3$d$ sites coexist. Substantial x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) is observed in polarization dependent spectra, indicating the existence of orbital order or fluctuation in the Fe-ladder even above the Néel temperature $T_N$. Direct exchange interaction along the legs of the Fe-ladder stabilizes the orbital and antiferromagnetic orders in BaFe$_2$S$_3$, while the ferromagnetic molecular orbitals are realized between the rungs in CsFe$_2$Se$_3$.

Electrical resistivity measurements have been performed on the iron-based ladder compounds Ba$_{1-x}$Cs$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.65, and 1) under high pressure. A cubic anvil press was used up to 8.0 GPa, whereas further higher pressure was applied using a diamond anvil cell up to 30.0 GPa. Metallic behavior of the electrical conductivity was confirmed in the $x$ = 0.25 and 0.65 samples for pressures greater than 11.3 and 14.4 GPa, respectively, with the low-temperature $\log T$ upturn being consistent with weak localization of 2D electrons due to random potential. At pressures higher than 23.8 GPa, three-dimensional Fermi-liquid-like behavior was observed in the latter sample. No metallic conductivity was observed in the parent compounds BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x $ = 0) up to 30.0 GPa and CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x$ = 1) up to 17.0 GPa. The present results indicate that the origins of the insulating ground states in the parent and intermediate compounds are intrinsically different; the former is a Mott insulator, whereas the latter is an Anderson insulator owing to the random substitution of Cs for Ba.

Low-energy magnetic excitations of the easy-axis antiferromagnet TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated by far-infrared absorption and reflection spectroscopy in high magnetic fields up to 30 T. The observed field dependence of the resonance frequencies and the magnetization are reproduced by a mean-field spin model for magnetic fields applied both along and perpendicular to the easy axis. Based on this model we determined the full set of magnetic interactions, including Fe-Fe and Fe-Tb exchange interactions, single-ion anisotropy for Tb ions and $g$-factors, which describe the ground-state spin texture and the low-energy spin excitations of TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. Compared to earlier studies we allow a small canting of the nearly Ising-like Tb moments to achieve a quantitative agreement with the magnetic susceptibility measurements. The additional high energy magnetic resonance lines observed, besides the two resonances expected for a two-sublattice antiferromagnet, suggest a more complex six-sublattice magnetic ground state for TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$.

The pressure effects on the antiferromagentic orders in iron-based ladder compounds CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ and BaFe$_2$S$_3$ have been studied using neutron diffraction. With identical crystal structure and similar magnetic structures, the two compounds exhibit highly contrasting magnetic behaviors under moderate external pressures. In CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ the ladders are brought much closer to each other by pressure, but the stripe-type magnetic order shows no observable change. In contrast, the stripe order in BaFe$_2$S$_3$, undergoes a quantum phase transition where an abrupt increase of N$\acute{e}$el temperature by more than 50$\%$ occurs at about 1 GPa, accompanied by a jump in the ordered moment. With its spin structure unchanged, BaFe$_2$S$_3$ enters an enhanced magnetic phase that bears the characteristics of an orbital selective Mott phase, which is the true neighbor of superconductivity emerging at higher pressures.

We investigate the in-plane anisotropy of Fe 3d orbitals occurring in a wide temperature and composition range of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 system. By employing the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the lifting of degeneracy in dxz and dyz orbitals at the Brillouin zone corners can be obtained as a measure of the orbital anisotropy. In the underdoped regime, it starts to evolve on cooling from high temperatures above both antiferromagnetic and orthorhombic transitions. With increasing x, it well survives into the superconducting regime, but gradually gets suppressed and finally disappears around the non-superconducting transition (x = 0.7). The observed spontaneous in-plane orbital anisotropy, possibly coupled with anisotropic lattice and magnetic fluctuations, implies the rotational-symmetry broken electronic state working as the stage for the superconductivity in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2.

The effects of off-stoichiometry and elemental substitution on electronic properties of iron-based ladder compound BaFe$_{2}$S$_{3}$ are investigated. Resistivity and magnetization are revealed to be quite sensitive to the stoichiometry of Fe atoms, and 10 \% deficiency at Fe sites reduces the antiferromagnetic transition temperature by 40 K. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature decreases even faster and collapse to zero with hole do** through 10 \% K substitution at Ba site, while the antiferromagnetic ordering phase remains with electron do** through 20 \% Co substitution at Fe site. Such electron-hole asymmetry is opposite to two-dimensional iron-based superconductors, and can be explained on the basis of both itinerant and localized electronic pictures.

All the iron-based superconductors identified to date share a square lattice composed of Fe atoms as a common feature, despite having different crystal structures. In copper-based materials, the superconducting phase emerges not only in square lattice structures but also in ladder structures. Yet iron-based superconductors without a square lattice motif have not been found despite being actively sought out. Here, we report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron-based spin-ladder material BaFe2S3, a Mott insulator with striped-type magnetic ordering below ~120 K. On the application of pressure this compound exhibits a metal-insulator transition at about 11 GPa, followed by the appearance of superconductivity below Tc = 14 K, right after the onset of the metallic phase. Our findings indicate that iron-based ladder compounds represent promising material platforms, in particular for studying the fundamentals of iron-based superconductivity.

We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of NdFe$_{3}$($^{11}$BO$_{3}$)$_{4}$ to explore the magnetic excitations, to establish the underlying Hamiltonian, and to reveal the detailed nature of hybridization between the 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism. The observed spectra exhibiting a couple of key features, i.e., anti-crossing of Nd- and Fe-excitations and anisotropy gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center, are explained by the magnetic model including spin interaction in the framework of weakly-coupled Fe$^{3+}$ chains, interaction between the Fe$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ moments, and single-ion anisotropy derived from Nd$^{3+}$ crystal field. The combination of the measurements and calculations reveals that the hybridization between 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism propagates the local magnetic anisotropy of the Nd$^{3+}$ ion to the Fe$^{3+}$ network, resulting in the bulk structure of multiferroics.

It is also temperature-dependent and survives up to ~90K. We attribute this kink to electron-mode coupling in good agreement with the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results on the same compound which observed a similar bosonic mode associated with spin excitations. The relation between the mode energy (Ω) and the SC transition temperature (Tc) deduced from our Laser ARPES data follow the universal relation deduced from INS and STM. In addition, we could resolve another kink at higher BE showing less do** and temperature dependence and may thus be of different origin.

However, the nature of its ground state is still object of debate, with contradictory experimental and theoretical results. We probe the ground state of CaIrO3 and assess the effective tetragonal crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling at play in this system by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We conclude that insulating CaIrO3 is not a jeff = 1/2 iridate and discuss the consequences of our finding to the interpretation of previous experiments. In particular, we clarify how the Mott insulating state in iridates can be readily extended beyond the jeff = 1/2 ground state.

The nature of the pseudogap in high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconducting cuprates has been a major issue in condensed matter physics. It is still unclear whether the high-Tc superconductivity can be universally associated with the pseudogap formation. Here we provide direct evidence of the existence of the pseudogap phase via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in another family of high-Tc superconductor, iron-pnictides. Our results reveal a composition dependent pseudogap formation in the multi-band electronic structure of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. The pseudogap develops well above the magnetostructural transition for low x, persists above the nonmagnetic superconducting dome for optimal x and is destroyed for x ~ 0.6, thus showing a notable similarity with cuprates. In addition, the pseudogap formation is accompanied by inequivalent energy shifts in xz/yz orbitals of iron atoms, indicative of a peculiar iron orbital ordering which breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry.

Dynamical properties of the lattice structure was studied by optical spectroscopy in ACr2O4 chromium spinel oxide magnetic semiconductors over a broad temperature region of T=10-335K. The systematic change of the A-site ions (A=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) showed that the occupancy of 3d orbitals on the A-site, has strong impact on the lattice dynamics. For compounds with orbital degeneracy (FeCr2O4, NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4), clear splitting of infrared-active phonon modes and/or activation of silent vibrational modes have been observed upon the Jahn-Teller transition and at the onset of the subsequent long-range magnetic order. Although MnCr2O4 and CoCr2O4 show multiferroic and magnetoelectric character, no considerable magnetoelasticity was found in spinel compounds without orbital degeneracy as they closely preserve the high-temperature cubic spinel structure even in their magnetic ground state. Besides lattice vibrations, intra-atomic 3d-3d transitions of the A$^{2+}$ ions were also investigated to determine the crystal field and Racah parameters and the strength of the spin-orbit coupling.

At the $L_{3}$ edge, resonance excitations were clearly observed from the core 2$p$ orbitals to both the 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals. In contrast, the resonance mode associated with 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals was indiscernible at the $L_{2}$ edge. This contrasting behavior indicates that Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals are fairly close to the $J_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 state due to the strong spin--orbit coupling in 5$d$ transition metal ions, as in the Mott insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$. Our results clearly demonstrate that ATS scattering is a useful probe for investigating complex orbital states in a metallic state. Such states induce novel phenomena such as the spin Hall effect.

The electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK122 ; x = 0.2 - 0.7) is studied using laser ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES). For the optimally doped case of x = 0.4, we clearly observe two peaks below Tc in the ARPES spectra at a binding energies (BE) of 5 meV and 13meV. The former is assigned to a superconducting (SC) coherence peak since it appears and evolves below the bulk SC transition at Tc (= 36 K), accompanying a gap opening centered at EF. In contrast, the latter peak, which appears below ~ 90 K without any gap formation, is interpreted to be not directly related to a SC coherence peak. This high-BE peak is observed from x = 0.2 to 0.6, reduces in energy with overdo** (x > 0.4) and is absent for x = 0.7. The temperature(T)- and do**-dependent ARPES results suggest that the high-BE peak originates from coupling to a bosonic mode of energy ~ 8 meV.

Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in/all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transition is not caused by Slater mechanism as believed earlier but by an alternative mechanism related to the formation of the specific tetrahedral magnetic order on the pyrochlore lattice in the presence of strong spin-orbit interactions.

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of pyrochlore-type Pb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{6}$O'$_{0.55}$, which is a metal without spatial inversion symmetry at room temperature, were investigated. Structural analysis revealed that the structural distortion relevant to the breakdown of the inversion symmetry is dominated by the Pb-O' network but is very small in the Ir-O network. At the same time, gigantic second-harmonic generation signals were observed, which can only occur if the local environment of the Ir 5$d$ electrons features broken inversion symmetry. First-principles electronic structure calculations reveal that the underlying mechanism for this phenomenon is the induction of the noncentrosymmetricity in the Ir 5$d$ bands by the strong hybridization with O' 2$p$ orbitals. Our results stimulate theoretical study of inversion-broken iridates, where exotic quantum states such as a topological insulator and Dirac semimetal are anticipated.

We investigated the in-plane transport properties of the Fe-based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with a wide composition range $0 \leq x \leq 0.55$. We show that the do** dependence of the Hall coefficient is well-described by the Boltzmann equation for a two-band system with a rigid-band approximation. We successfully deduced transport parameters, which suggested that holes with heavier mass conduct more smoothly than electrons. Moreover, the temperature variation of the Hall coefficient indicated that an anomalous coherent state characterized by heavy quasiparticles in hole bands evolved below $\sim100$ K, predominantly in the optimal and overdoped regions. We argue that this phenomenon can be understood in relation to the pseudopeak structure observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

We performed resonant x-ray diffraction experiments at the $L$ absorption edges for the post-perovskite-type compound CaIrO$_{3}$ with $(t_{2g})^5$ electronic configuration. By observing the magnetic signals, we could clearly see that the magnetic structure was a striped order with an antiferromagnetic moment along the c-axis and that the wavefunction of a $t_{2g}$ hole is strongly spin-orbit entangled, the $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ state. The observed spin arrangement is consistent with theoretical work predicting a unique superexchange interaction in the $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ state and points to the universal importance of the spin-orbit coupling in Ir oxides, irrespective of the local coordination and lattice topology. We also propose that the non-magnetic resonant scattering is a powerful tool for unraveling an orbital state even in a metallic iridate.

We present the results of electrical resistivity, ac specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) of the ternary iron arsenide EuFe2As2 single crystal under pressure. Applying pressure leads to a continuous suppression of the antiferromagnetism associated with Fe moments and the antiferromagnetic transition temperature becomes zero in the vicinity of a critical pressure Pc ~2.5-2.7 GPa. Pressure-induced re-entrant superconductivity, which is highly sensitive to the homogeneity of the pressure, only appears in the narrow pressure region in the vicinity of Pc due to the competition between superconductivity and the antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu2+ moments. The antiferromagnetic state of Eu2+ moments changes to the ferromagnetic state above 6 GPa. We also found that the ferromagnetic order is suppressed with further increasing pressure, which is connected with a valence change of Eu ions.

Diagonal and off-diagonal optical conductivity spectra have been determined form the measured reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) over a broad range of photon energy in the itinerant ferromagnetic phase of CuCr$_2$Se$_4$ at various temperatures down to T=10 K. Besides the low-energy metallic contribution and the lower-lying charge transfer transition at $E$$\approx$2 eV, a sharp and distinct optical transition was observed in the mid-infrared region around $E$$=$0.5 eV with huge magneto-optical activity. This excitation is attributed to a parity allowed transition through the Se-Cr hybridization-induced gap in the majority spin channel. The large off-diagonal conductivity is explained by the high spin polarization in the vicinity of the Fermi level and the strong spin-orbit interaction for the related charge carriers. The results are discussed in connection with band structure calculations.

The NMR spectra at 5.4 GPa indicate simultaneous development of the SC and AF orders below 30 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the SC domains shows a substantial residual density of states, suggesting proximity effects due to spontaneous formation of a nano-scale SC/AF hybrid structure. This entangled behavior is a remarkable example of a self-organized heterogeneous structure in a clean system.

We measured the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility of BaFe2As2 and SrFe2As2 single crystals under pressure using a cubic anvil apparatus. For BaFe2As2, the antiferromagnetic (AF) and structural transitions are suppressed with increasing pressure. Unexpectedly, these transitions persist up to 8 GPa, and no signature of a superconducting transition was observed in the pressure range investigated here. On the other hand, the AF and structural transitions of SrFe2As2 collapse at around the critical pressure Pc ~ 5 GPa, resulting in the appearance of bulk superconductivity. The superconducting volume fraction abruptly increases above Pc, and shows a dome centered at approximately 6 GPa. Our results suggest that the bulk superconducting phase competes with the AF/orthorhombic phase and only appears in the narrow pressure region of the tetragonal phase.

We demonstrate that the onset of complex spin orders in ACr$_2$O$_4$ spinels with magnetic A$=$Co, Fe and Cu ions lowers the lattice symmetry. This is clearly indicated by the emergence of anisotropic lattice dynamics -- as evidenced by the pronounced phonon splittings -- even when experiments probing static distortions fail. We show that the crystal symmetry in the magnetic phase is reduced from tetragonal to orthorhombic for FeCr$_2$O$_4$ and CuCr$_2$O$_4$ with Jahn-Teller active A-site ions. The conical spin structure in FeCr$_2$O$_4$ is also manifested in the phonon frequencies. In contrast, the multiferroic CoCr$_2$O$_4$ with no orbital degrees of freedom remains nearly cubic in its ground state.

Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is employed to investigate the temperature (T) dependence of the electronic structure in BaFe2As2 across the magneto-structural transition at TN ~ 140 K. A drastic transformation in Fermi surface (FS) shape across TN is observed, as expected by first-principles band calculations. Polarization-dependent ARPES and band calculations consistently indicate that the observed FSs at kz ~ pi in the low-T antiferromagnetic (AF) state are dominated by the Fe3dzx orbital, leading to the two-fold electronic structure. These results indicate that magneto-structural transition in BaFe2As2 accompanies orbital-dependent modifications in the electronic structure.

The NMR spectra clearly show sharp first-order antiferromagnetic (AF) and structural transitions occurring simultaneously. The behavior in the vicinity of the transition is compared with our previous study on BaFe2As2. No significant difference was observed in the temperature dependence of the static quantities such as the AF splitting and electric quadrupole splitting. However, the results of the NMR relaxation rate revealed difference in the dynamical spin fluctuations. The stripe-type AF fluctuations in the paramagnetic state appear to be more anisotropic in BaFe2As2 than in SrFe2As2.

A first-order antiferromagnetic (AF) transition near 135 K was detected by the splitting of NMR lines, which is accompanied by simultaneous structural transition as evidenced by a sudden large change of the electric field gradient tensor at the As site. The NMR results lead almost uniquely to the stripe spin structure in the AF phase. The data of spin-lattice relaxation rate indicate development of anisotropic spin fluctuations of the stripe-type with decreasing temperature in the paramagnetic phase.
