Abstract:
High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $Δ_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $Δφ$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

We propose a minimal gauged U(1)$_X$ extension of the MSSM with R-parity conservation. In this model, U(1)$_X$ is a generalization of the well-known U(1) $B-L$. Apart from the MSSM particle content, the model includes three right-handed neutrino (RHN) chiral superfields, each carrying a unit U(1)$_X$ charge. In the presence of RHNs, the model is free from all gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies. However, there are no U(1)$_X$ Higgs chiral superfields with U(1)$_X$ charge $\pm2$ involved in the model. Two of the RHN superfields are assigned an odd R-parity, while the last one ($Ψ$) has an even parity. The U(1)$_X$ symmetry is radiatively broken by the VEV of the scalar component of $Ψ$. As a consequence of the absence of U(1)$_X$ Higgs fields and the novel R-parity assignment, the three light neutrinos consist of one massless neutrino and two Dirac neutrinos. In the early universe, the right-handed components of the Dirac neutrinos are in thermal equilibrium with the SM particles through the U(1)$_X$ gauge ($Z^\prime$) boson. The extra energy density from the RHNs is constrained to avoid disrupting the success of BBN, leading to a lower bound on the scale of U(1)$_X$ symmetry breaking. In our model, a mixture of the U(1)$_X$ gaugino and the fermionic component of $Ψ$ becomes a new dark matter (DM) candidate if it is the lightest sparticle mass eigenstate. We examine this DM phenomenology and identify a parameter region that reproduces the observed DM relic density. Furthermore, we consider constraints from the search for $Z'$ boson resonance at the LHC. The three constraints obtained from the success of BBN, the observed DM relic density, and the $Z^\prime$ resonance search at the LHC complement each other, narrowing down the allowed parameter region.

Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$π^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$.

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au$+$Au, $d$$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, for direct photon $p_T$ from 5--12 GeV/$c$, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in $d$$+$Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au$+$Au compared to $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au$+$Au increases to an excess over the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron $p_T$ and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

We have analyzed the broadband X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in two "non-merging" luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) UGC 2608 and NGC 5135, utilizing the data of NuSTAR, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra. Applying the X-ray clumpy-torus model (XCLUMPY: Tanimoto et al. 2019), we find that both sources have similar spectra characterized by Compton-thick (CT) absorption ($N_{\rm H} \sim$ 5-7 $\times$ $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) and small torus angular width ($σ$ $<$ 20$^{\circ}$). The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities are $3.9^{+2.2}_{-1.7}$ $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (UGC 2608) and $2.0^{+3.3}_{-1.0}$ $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (NGC 5135). The [O IV]-to-nuclear-12 $μ$m luminosity ratios are larger than those of typical Seyferts, which are consistent with the torus covering factors ($C_{\rm T} \lesssim$ 0.7) estimated from the torus angular widths and column densities by X-ray spectroscopy. The torus covering factors and Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd} \sim$ 0.1) follow the relation found by Ricci et al. (2017c) for local AGNs, implying that their tori become geometrically thin due to significant radiation pressure of the AGN that blows out some part of the tori. These results indicate that the CT AGNs in these "non-merger" LIRGs are just a normal AGN population seen edge-on through a large line-of-sight column density. They are in contrast to the buried CT AGNs in late-stage mergers that have large torus covering factors even at large Eddington ratios.

With the assumption of classical scale invariance at the Planck scale, the DFSZ axion model can generate the Higgs mass terms of the appropriate size through technically natural parameters and may be valid up to the Planck scale. We discuss the high scale validity of the Higgs sector, namely the absence of Landau poles and the vacuum stability. The Higgs sector is identical to that of the type-II two Higgs doublet model with a limited number of the Higgs quartic couplings. We utilize the state-of-the-art method to calculate vacuum decay rates and find that they are enhanced at most by 10^10 compared with the tree level evaluation. We also discuss the constraints from flavor observables, perturbative unitarity, oblique parameters and collider searches. We find that the high scale validity tightly constrains the parameter region, but there is still a chance to observe at most about 10% deviation of the $125~{\rm GeV}$ Higgs couplings to the fermions.

We report results from X-ray and optical observations of the Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1828-249, performed with Suzaku and the Kanata telescope around the X-ray flux peak in the 2013 outburst. The time-averaged X-ray spectrum covering 0.6--168 keV was approximately characterized by a strong multi-color disk blackbody component with an inner disk temperature of ~0.6 keV, and a power-law tail with a photon index of ~2.0. We detected an additional structure at 5-10 keV, which can be modelled neither with X-ray reflection on the disk, nor relativistic broadening of the disk emission. Instead, it was successfully reproduced with a Comptonization of disk photons by thermal electrons with a relatively low temperature (<~10 keV). We infer that the source was in the intermediate state, considering its long-term trend in the hardness intensity diagram, the strength of the spectral power-law tail, and its variability properties. The low-temperature Comptonization component could be produced in a boundary region between the truncated standard disk and the hot inner flow, or a Comptonizing region that somehow developed above the disk surface. The multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution suggests that the optical and UV fluxes were dominated by irradiated outer disk emission.

Electron spins confined in quantum dots are an attractive system to realize high-fidelity qubits owing to their long coherence time. With the prolonged spin coherence time, however, the control fidelity can be limited by systematic errors rather than decoherence, making characterization and suppression of their influence crucial for further improvement. Here we report that the control fidelity of Si/SiGe spin qubits can be limited by the microwave-induced frequency shift of electric dipole spin resonance and it can be improved by optimization of control pulses. As we increase the control microwave amplitude, we observe a shift of the qubit resonance frequency, in addition to the increasing Rabi frequency. We reveal that this limits control fidelity with a conventional amplitude-modulated microwave pulse below 99.8%. In order to achieve a gate fidelity > 99.9%, we introduce a quadrature control method, and validate this approach experimentally by randomized benchmarking. Our finding facilitates realization of an ultra-high fidelity qubit with electron spins in quantum dots.

We compile 682 sources detected at significances of $s_{\rm D,4-10~keV} \geq 6.5$ in the 4--10 keV band. A two-dimensional image fit based on the Poisson likelihood algorithm ($C$-statistics) is adopted for the detections and constraints on their fluxes and positions. The 4--10 keV sensitivity reaches $\approx 0.48$ mCrab, or $\approx 5.9 \times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, over the half of the survey area. Compared with the 37-month catalog (Hiroi et al. 2013), which adopted a threshold of $s_{\rm D,4-10~keV} \geq 7$, the source number increases by a factor of $\sim$1.4. The fluxes in the 3--4 keV and 10--20 keV bands are further estimated, and hardness ratios (HRs) are calculated using the 3--4 keV, 4--10 keV, 3--10 keV, and 10--20 keV band fluxes. We also make the 4--10 keV lightcurves in one year bins for all the sources and characterize their variabilities with an index based on a likelihood function and the excess variance. Possible counterparts are found from five major X-ray survey catalogs by Swift, Uhuru, RXTE, XMM-Newton, and ROSAT, and an X-ray galaxy-cluster catalog (MCXC). Our catalog provides the fluxes, positions, detection significances, HRs, one-year bin lightcurves, variability indices, and counterpart candidates.

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4<p_T<3$ GeV/$c$) direct-photon yields from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ reveals that the low-momentum ($>$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_γ^{\rm dir}/dη$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/dη)^α$ with $α{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

We have measured direct photons for $p_T<5~$GeV/$c$ in minimum bias and 0\%--40\% most central events at midrapidity for Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ contribution from quasi-real direct virtual photons has been determined as an excess over the known hadronic contributions in the $e^{+}e^{-}$ mass distribution. A clear enhancement of photons over the binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ fit is observed for $p_T<4$ GeV/$c$ in Cu$+$Cu data. The $p_T$ spectra are consistent with the Au$+$Au data covering a similar number of participants. The inverse slopes of the exponential fits to the excess after subtraction of the $p$$+$$p$ baseline are 285$\pm$53(stat)$\pm$57(syst)~MeV/$c$ and 333$\pm$72(stat)$\pm$45(syst)~MeV/$c$ for minimum bias and 0\%--40\% most central events, respectively. The rapidity density, $dN/dy$, of photons demonstrates the same power law as a function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ observed in Au$+$Au at the same collision energy.

Detecting their transmitted hard X-ray $>10$ keV continua with NuSTAR, we confirm that Mrk 463E and Mrk 463W have AGNs with intrinsic luminosities of (1.6-2.2) $\times 10^{43}$ and (0.5-0.6) $\times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (2-10 keV) obscured by hydrogen column densities of 8 $\times 10^{23}$ and 3 $\times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. Both nuclei show strong reflection components from cold matter. The luminosity ratio between X-ray (2-10 keV) and [O IV] 25.89 $μ$m of Mrk 463E is $\sim$5 times smaller than those of normal Seyfert galaxies, suggesting that the intrinsic SED is X-ray weak relative to the UV luminosity. In fact, the bolometric AGN luminosity of Mrk 463E estimated from $L^{\prime}$-band (3.8 $μ$m), [O IV] 25.89 $μ$m, and [Ne V] 14.32 $μ$m lines indicate a large bolometric-to-X-ray luminosity ratio, $κ_{\rm 2-10 keV} \approx$ 110-410, and a high Eddington ratio, $λ_{\rm Edd} \sim$ 0.4-0.8. We suggest that the merger triggered a rapid growth of the black hole in Mrk 463E, which is not yet deeply "buried" by circumnuclear dust. By contrast, the $L^{\prime}$-band luminosity of Mrk 463W is unusually small relative to the X-ray luminosity, suggesting that the Eddington ratio is low ($<10^{-3}$) and it might be still in an early phase of merger-driven AGN activity.

We present measurements of azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV Au$+$Au collisions for the trigger and associated particle transverse-momentum ranges of $1<p_T^t<10$~GeV/$c$ and $0.5<p_T^a<10$~GeV/$c$. After subtraction of an underlying event using a model that includes higher-order azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$, $v_3$, and $v_4$, the away-side yield of the highest trigger-\pt ($p_T^t>4$~GeV/$c$) correlations is suppressed compared to that of correlations measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. At the lowest associated particle $p_T$ ($0.5<p_T^a<1$ GeV/$c$), the away-side shape and yield are modified relative to those in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These observations are consistent with the scenario of radiative-jet energy loss. For the low-$p_T$ trigger correlations ($2<p_T^t<4$ GeV/$c$), a finite away-side yield exists and we explore the dependence of the shape of the away-side within the context of an underlying-event model. Correlations are also studied differentially versus event-plane angle $Ψ_2$ and $Ψ_3$. The angular correlations show an asymmetry when selecting the sign of the difference between the trigger-particle azimuthal angle and the $Ψ_2$ event plane. This asymmetry and the measured suppression of the pair yield out of plane is consistent with a path-length-dependent energy loss. No $Ψ_3$ dependence can be resolved within experimental uncertainties.

We report the hard X-ray (3-50 keV) view of the compact group HCG 16 (Arp 318) observed with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). NGC 838 and NGC 839 are undetected at energies above 8 keV, showing no evidence of heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This confirms that these are starburst-dominant galaxies as previously suggested. We perform a comprehensive broadband (0.3-50 keV) X-ray spectral analysis of the interacting galaxies NGC 833 and NGC 835, using data of NuSTAR, Chandra, and XMM-Newton observed on multiple epochs from 2000 to 2015. NuSTAR detects the transmitted continua of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) in NGC 833 and NGC 835 with line-of-sight column densities of $\approx 3 \times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities of $\approx 3\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The iron-K$α$ to hard X-ray luminosity ratios of NGC 833 and NGC 835 suggest that their tori are moderately developed, which may have been triggered by the galaxy interactions. We find that NGC 835 underwent long-term variability in both intrinsic luminosity (by a factor of 5) and absorption (by $ΔN_{\rm H} \approx 2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). We discuss the relation between the X-ray and total infrared luminosities in local LLAGNs hosted by spiral galaxies. The large diversity in their ratios is consistent with the the general idea that the mass accretion process in the nucleus and the star forming activity in the disk are not strongly coupled, regardless of the galaxy environment.

In this model, the U(1)_X gauge symmetry is radiatively broken through the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) mechanism, by which the U(1)_X gauge boson (Z' boson) and the right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) acquire their masses. We consider their masses in the range of O(10 GeV)-O(10 TeV), which are accessible to high energy collider experiments. The radiative U(1)_X gauge symmetry breaking also generates a negative mass squared for the SM Higgs doublet, and the electroweak symmetry breaking occurs subsequently. We identify the U(1)_X Higgs field with inflaton and calculate the inflationary predictions. Due to the CW mechanism, the inflaton quartic coupling during inflation, which determines the inflationary predictions, is correlated to the U(1)_X gauge coupling. With this correlation, we investigate complementarities between the inflationary predictions and the current constraint from the Z' boson resonance search at the LHC Run-2 as well as the prospect of the search for the Z' boson and the RHNs at the future collider experiments. The azimuthal angle correlations for particle pairs with this large rapidity gap in the Au-going direction exhibit a ridge-like structure that persists up to $p_T{\approx}6$ GeV/$c$ and which strongly depends on collision centrality, which is a similar characteristic to the hydrodynamical particle flow in A+A collisions. The ridge-like structure is absent in the $d$-going direction as well as in $p$$+$$p$ collisions, in the transverse-momentum range studied. The results indicate that the ridge-like structure is shifted in the Au-going direction toward more central collisions, similar to the charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions.

Recent advances towards spin-based quantum computation have been primarily fuelled by elaborate isolation from noise sources, such as surrounding nuclear spins and spin-electric susceptibility, to extend spin coherence. In the meanwhile, addressable single-spin and spin-spin manipulations in multiple-qubit systems will necessitate sizable spin-electric coupling. Given background charge fluctuation in nanostructures, however, its compatibility with enhanced coherence should be crucially questioned. Here we realise a single-electron spin qubit with isotopically-enriched phase coherence time (20 microseconds) and fast electrical control speed (up to 30 MHz) mediated by extrinsic spin-electric coupling. Using rapid spin rotations, we reveal that the free-evolution dephasing is caused by charge (instead of conventional magnetic) noise featured by a 1/f spectrum over seven decades of frequency. The qubit nevertheless exhibits superior performance with single-qubit gate fidelities exceeding 99.9% on average. Our work strongly suggests that designing artificial spin-electric coupling with account taken of charge noise is a promising route to large-scale spin-qubit systems having fault-tolerant controllability.

We consider the dark matter (DM) scenario in the context of the classically conformal U(1)' extended standard model (SM), with three right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) and the U(1)' Higgs field. The model is free from all the U(1)' gauge and gravitational anomalies in the presence of the three RHNs. We introduce a $Z_2$-parity in the model, under which an odd-parity is assigned to one RHN, while all the other particles is assigned to be $Z_2$-even, and hence the $Z_2$-odd RHN serves as a DM candidate. In this model, the U(1)' gauge symmetry is radiatively broken through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, by which the electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered. There are three free parameters in our model, the U(1)' charge of the SM Higgs doublet ($x_H$), the new U(1)' gauge coupling ($g_X$), and the U(1)' gauge boson ($Z'$) mass ($m_{Z'}$), which are severely constrained in order to solve the electroweak vacuum instability problem, and satisfy the LHC Run-2 bounds from the search for $Z'$ boson resonance. In addition to these constraints, we investigate the RHN DM physics. Because of the nature of classical conformality, we find that a RHN DM pair mainly annihilates into the SM particles through the $Z'$ boson exchange. This is the so-called $Z'$-portal DM scenario. Combining the electroweak vacuum stability condition, the LHC Run-2 bounds, and the cosmological constraint from the observed DM relic density, we find that all constrains complementarily work to narrow down the allowed parameter regions, and, especially, exclude $m_{Z'} \lesssim 3.5$ TeV. For the obtained allowed regions, we calculate the spin-independent cross section of the RHN DM with nucleons. We find that the resultant cross section well below the current experimental upper bounds.

We report a measurement of $e^+e^-$ pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$~GeV. The $e^+e^-$ pair yield from $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ is separated by exploiting a double differential fit done simultaneously in dielectron invariant mass and $p_T$. We used three different event generators, {\sc pythia}, {\sc mc@nlo}, and {\sc powheg}, to simulate the $e^+e^-$ spectra from $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ production. The data can be well described by all three generators within the detector acceptance. However, when using the generators to extrapolate to $4π$, significant differences are observed for the total cross section. These difference are less pronounced for $b\bar{b}$ than for $c\bar{c}$. The same model dependence was observed in already published $d$+$A$ data. The $p$+$p$ data are also directly compared with $d$+$A$ data in mass and $p_T$, and within the statistical accuracy no nuclear modification is seen.

We report the broadband X-ray spectra of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) UGC 5101 in the 0.25-100 keV band observed with Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), NuSTAR, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra. A Compton-thick AGN obscured with a hydrogen column density of $\approx 1.3\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ is detected above 10 keV. A spectral fit with a numerical torus model favors a large half opening angle of the torus, $>41$ degrees, suggesting that the covering fraction of material heavily obscuring the X-ray source is moderate. The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity is determined to be $\approx 1.4\times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is $\approx$2.5 times larger than the previous estimate using only data below 10 keV with a simple spectral model. We find that UGC 5101 shows the ratio between the [O IV] 26 $μ$m line and 2-10 keV luminosities similar to those of normal Seyfert galaxies, along with other ULIRGs observed with NuSTAR, indicating that a significant portion of local ULIRGs are not really "X-ray faint" with respect to the flux of forbidden lines originating from the narrow line region (NLR). We propose a possible scenario that (1) the AGN in UGC 5101 is surrounded not only by Compton-thick matter located close to the equatorial plane but also by Compton-thin ($N_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) matter in the torus-hole region and (2) it is accreting at a high Eddington rate with a steep UV to X-ray spectral energy distribution. Nevertheless, we argue that AGNs in many ULIRGs do not look extraordinary (i.e., extremely X-ray faint), as suggested by recent works, compared with normal Seyferts.

Sensory receptor neurons match their dynamic range to ecologically relevant stimulus intensities. How this tuning is achieved is poorly understood in most receptors. We show that in the C. elegans URX O2 sensing neurons two putative molecular O2 sensors, a neuroglobin and O2-binding soluble guanylate cyclases, work antagonistically to sculpt a slowly sigmoidal O2 response curve tuned to approach saturation when O2 reaches 21%. glb-5 imposes this sigmoidal function by inhibiting O2-evoked Ca2+ responses in URX when O2 levels fall. Without GLB-5, the URX response curve approaches saturation at 15% O2. Behaviorally, GLB-5 signaling broadens the O2 preference of C. elegans while maintaining strong avoidance of 21% O2. Our computational aerotaxis model suggests that the relationship between GLB-5-modulated URX responses and reversal behavior is sufficient to broaden O2-preference. Thus, a neuroglobin can shift neural information coding leading to a change in perception and altered behavior.

We consider the minimal U(1)' extension of the standard model (SM) with the classically conformal invariance, where an anomaly-free U(1)' gauge symmetry is introduced along with three generations of right-handed neutrinos and a U(1)' Higgs field. Since the classically conformal symmetry forbids all dimensional parameters in the model, the U(1)' gauge symmetry is broken by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, generating the mass terms of the U(1)' gauge boson ($Z$' boson) and the right-handed neutrinos. Through a mixing quartic coupling between the U(1)' Higgs field and the SM Higgs doublet field, the radiative U(1)' gauge symmetry breaking also triggers the breaking of the electroweak symmetry. In this model context, we first investigate the electroweak vacuum instability problem in the SM. Employing the renormalization group equations at the two-loop level and the central values for the world average masses of the top quark ($m_t=173.34$ GeV) and the Higgs boson ($m_h=125.09$ GeV), we perform parameter scans to identify the parameter region for resolving the electroweak vacuum instability problem. Next we interpret the recent ATLAS and CMS search limits at the LHC Run-2 for the sequential $Z$' boson to constrain the parameter region in our model. Combining the constraints from the electroweak vacuum stability and the LHC Run-2 results, we find a bound on the $Z$' boson mass as $m_{Z'} \gtrsim 3.5$ TeV. We also calculate self-energy corrections to the SM Higgs doublet field through the heavy states, the right-handed neutrinos and the $Z$' boson, and find the naturalness bound as $m_{Z'} \lesssim 7$ TeV, in order to reproduce the right electroweak scale for the fine-tuning level better than 10\%. The resultant mass range of $3.5$ TeV $\lesssim m_{Z'} \lesssim 7$ TeV will be explored at the LHC Run-2 in the near future.

Fault-tolerant quantum operation is a key requirement for the development of quantum computing. This has been realized in various solid-state systems including isotopically purified silicon which provides a nuclear spin free environment for the qubits, but not in industry standard natural (unpurified) silicon. Here we demonstrate an addressable fault-tolerant qubit using a natural silicon double quantum dot with a micromagnet optimally designed for fast spin control. This optimized design allows us to achieve the optimum Rabi oscillation quality factor Q = 140 at a Rabi frequency of 10 MHz in the frequency range two orders of magnitude higher than that achieved in previous studies. This leads to a qubit fidelity of 99.6 %, which is the highest reported for natural silicon qubits and comparable to that obtained in isotopically purified silicon quantum-dot-based qubits. This result can inspire contributions from the industrial and quantum computing communities.

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured 2nd and 3rd order Fourier coefficients of the azimuthal distributions of direct photons emitted at midrapidity in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for various collision centralities. Combining two different analysis techniques, results were obtained in the transverse momentum range of $0.4<p_{T}<4.0$ GeV/$c$. At low $p_T$ the second-order coefficients, $v_2$, are similar to the ones observed in hadrons. Third order coefficients, $v_3$, are nonzero and almost independent of centrality. These new results on $v_2$ and $v_3$, combined with previously published results on yields, are compared to model calculations that provide yields and asymmetries in the same framework. Those models are challenged to explain simultaneously the observed large yield and large azimuthal anisotropies.

Measurements of the fractional momentum loss ($S_{\rm loss}\equivδp_T/p_T$) of high-transverse-momentum-identified hadrons in heavy ion collisions are presented. Using $π^0$ in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in Pb$+$Pb collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of $S_{\rm loss}$ as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$, the number of quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the charged-particle density, $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$. We find that the $p_T$ where $S_{\rm loss}$ has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, $S_{\rm loss}$ tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of $S_{\rm loss}$ with $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$, lending insight on the physics of parton energy loss.

Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/dη$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

Jet production rates are measured in $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the $R=0.3$ anti-$k_{t}$ algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multi-wire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with $12<p_T<50$ GeV/$c$, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of $\left|η\right|<0.3$. The nuclear-modification factor ($R_{d{\rm Au}}$) values for 0\%--100\% $d$$+$Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet production. However, the centrality-selected $R_{d{\rm Au}}$ values and central-to-peripheral ratios ($R_{\rm CP}$) show large, $p_T$-dependent deviations from unity, which challenge the conventional models that relate hard-process rates and soft-particle production in collisions involving nuclei.

We present the first measurement of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in high-multiplicity $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in $^{3}$He$+$Au and in $p$$+$$p$ collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the $^{3}$He$+$Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The $v_2$ values are comparable to those previously measured in $d$$+$Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three $^{3}$He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

An enhancement of $φ$ meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the $d$-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. Similar behavior was previously observed for inclusive charged hadrons and open heavy flavor indicating similar cold-nuclear-matter effects.

The ratios of cumulants (e.g. $C_1/C_2$, $C_3/C_1$) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of $C_1/C_2 = μ/σ^2$ and $C_3/C_1 = Sσ^3/μ$ can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.

We consider the minimal U(1)$^\prime$ extension of the Standard Model (SM) with conformal invariance at the classical level, where in addition to the SM particle contents, three generations of right-handed neutrinos and a U(1)$^\prime$ Higgs field are introduced. In the presence of the three right-handed neutrinos, which are responsible for the seesaw mechanism, this model is free from all the gauge and gravitational anomalies. The U(1)$^\prime$ gauge symmetry is radiatively broken via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, by which the U(1)$^\prime$ gauge boson ($Z^\prime$ boson) mass as well as the Majorana mass for the right-handed neutrinos are generated. The radiative U(1)$^\prime$ symmetry breaking also induces a negative mass squared for the SM Higgs doublet to trigger the electroweak symmetry breaking. In this context, we investigate a possibility to solve the SM Higgs vacuum instability problem. The model includes only three free parameters (U(1)$^\prime$ charge of the SM Higgs doublet, U(1)$^\prime$ gauge coupling and $Z^\prime$ boson mass), for which we perform parameter scan, and identify a parameter region resolving the SM Higgs vacuum instability. We also examine naturalness of the model. The heavy states associated with the U(1)$^\prime$ symmetry breaking contribute to the SM Higgs self-energy. We find an upper bound on $Z^\prime$ boson mass, $m_{Z^\prime} \lesssim 6$ TeV, in order to avoid a fine-tuning severer than 10 % level. The $Z^\prime$ boson in this mass range can be discovered at the LHC Run-2 in the near future.

Hydrodynamic models qualitatively describe the similar oscillations of the mean source radii for pions and kaons, but they do not fully describe the transverse-mass dependence of the oscillations.

We have studied the dependence of azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ for inclusive and identified charged hadrons in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions on collision energy, species, and centrality. The values of $v_2$ as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ and centrality in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 62.4 GeV are the same within uncertainties. However, in Cu$+$Cu collisions we observe a decrease in $v_2$ values as the collision energy is reduced from 200 to 62.4 GeV. The decrease is larger in the more peripheral collisions. By examining both Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions we find that $v_2$ depends both on eccentricity and the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$. We observe that $v_2$ divided by eccentricity ($\varepsilon$) monotonically increases with $N_{\rm part}$ and scales as ${N_{\rm part}^{1/3}}$. The Cu$+$Cu data at 62.4 GeV falls below the other scaled $v_{2}$ data. For identified hadrons, $v_2$ divided by the number of constituent quarks $n_q$ is independent of hadron species as a function of transverse kinetic energy $KE_T=m_T-m$ between $0.1<KE_T/n_q<1$ GeV. Combining all of the above scaling and normalizations, we observe a near-universal scaling, with the exception of the Cu$+$Cu data at 62.4 GeV, of $v_2/(n_q\cdot\varepsilon\cdot N^{1/3}_{\rm part})$ vs $KE_T/n_q$ for all measured particles.

The $v_n$ coefficients show characteristic patterns consistent with hydrodynamical expansion of the matter produced in the collisions. For each harmonic $n$, a modified valence quark number $n_q$ scaling plotting $v_n/(n_q)^{n/2}$ versus ${\rm KE}_T/n_q$ is observed to yield a single curve for all the measured particle species for a broad range of transverse kinetic energies ${\rm KE}_T$. A simultaneous blast wave model fit to the observed particle spectra and $v_n(p_T)$ coefficients identifies spatial eccentricities $s_n$ at freeze-out, which are much smaller than the initial-state geometric values.

Two-pion interferometry measurements are used to extract the Gaussian radii $R_{\rm out}$, $R_{\rm side}$, and $R_{\rm long}$, of the pion emission sources produced in Cu$+$Cu and Au$+$Au collisions at several beam collision energies $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ at PHENIX. The extracted radii, which are compared to recent STAR and ALICE data, show characteristic scaling patterns as a function of the initial transverse size $\bar{R}$ of the collision systems and the transverse mass $m_T$ of the emitted pion pairs, consistent with hydrodynamiclike expansion. Specific combinations of the three-dimensional radii that are sensitive to the medium expansion velocity and lifetime, and the pion emission time duration show nonmonotonic $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ dependencies. The nonmonotonic behaviors exhibited by these quantities point to a softening of the equation of state that may coincide with the critical end point in the phase diagram for nuclear matter.

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_μ$ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6$σ$. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, $U$, in $π^0,η\rightarrow γe^+e^-$ decays and obtained upper limits of $\mathcal{O}(2\times10^{-6})$ on $U$-$γ$ mixing at 90% CL for the mass range $30<m_U<90$ MeV/$c^2$. Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the $U$-$γ$ mixing parameter space that can explain the $(g-2)_μ$ deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of $29<m_U<32$ MeV/$c^2$ remaining.

We present a measurement of the cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetry ($A_N$) for $η$ mesons at large pseudorapidity from $\sqrt{s}=200$~GeV $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions. The measured cross section for $0.5<p_T<5.0$~GeV/$c$ and $3.0<|η|<3.8$ is well described by a next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetries $A_N$ have been measured as a function of Feynman-$x$ ($x_F$) from $0.2<|x_{F}|<0.7$, as well as transverse momentum ($p_T$) from $1.0<p_T<4.5$~GeV/$c$. The asymmetry averaged over positive $x_F$ is $\langle{A_{N}}\rangle=0.061{\pm}0.014$. The results are consistent with prior transverse single-spin measurements of forward $η$ and $π^{0}$ mesons at various energies in overlap** $x_F$ ranges. Comparison of different particle species can help to determine the origin of the large observed asymmetries in $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions.

Exploring the mass and transverse-momentum dependence of the yield, the bottom decay contribution can be isolated from charm, and quantified by comparison to {\sc pythia} and {\sc mc@nlo} simulations. The resulting $b\bar{b}$-production cross section is $σ^{d{\rm Au}}_{b\bar{b}}=1.37{\pm}0.28({\rm stat}){\pm}0.46({\rm syst})$~mb, which is equivalent to a nucleon-nucleon cross section of $σ^{NN}_{bb}=3.4\pm0.8({\rm stat}){\pm}1.1({\rm syst})\ μ$b.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the centrality dependence of the direct photon yield from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV down to $p_T=0.4$ GeV/$c$. Photons are detected via photon conversions to $e^+e^-$ pairs and an improved technique is applied that minimizes the systematic uncertainties that usually limit direct photon measurements, in particular at low $p_T$. We find an excess of direct photons above the $N_{\rm coll}$-scaled yield measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. This excess yield is well described by an exponential distribution with an inverse slope of about 240 MeV/$c$ in the $p_T$ range from 0.6--2.0 GeV/$c$. While the shape of the $p_T$ distribution is independent of centrality within the experimental uncertainties, the yield increases rapidly with increasing centrality, scaling approximately with $N_{\rm part}^α$, where $α=1.48{\pm}0.08({\rm stat}){\pm}0.04({\rm syst})$.

The measured transverse-momentum spectra are used to determine the nuclear modification factor of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons in $d$$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at different centralities. In the $d$$+$Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons is almost constant as a function of transverse momentum and is consistent with unity showing that cold-nuclear-matter effects do not play a significant role in the measured kinematic range. In Cu$+$Cu collisions, within the uncertainties no nuclear modification is registered in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, both mesons show suppression relative to the expectations from the $p$$+$$p$ yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in the Cu$+$Cu system. In the $p_T$ range 2--5 GeV/$c$, the strange mesons ($K_S^0$, $K^{*0}$) similarly to the $φ$ meson with hidden strangeness, show an intermediate suppression between the more suppressed light quark mesons ($π^0$) and the nonsuppressed baryons ($p$, $\bar{p}$). At higher transverse momentum, $p_T>5$ GeV/$c$, production of all particles is similarly suppressed by a factor of $\approx$ 2.

The charged hadron is measured at midrapidity $|η|<0.35$, and the energy is measured at large rapidity ($-3.7<η<-3.1$, Au-going direction). An enhanced near-side angular correlation across $|Δη| >$ 2.75 is observed in $d$$+$Au collisions. Using the event plane method applied to the Au-going energy distribution, we extract the anisotropy strength $v_2$ for inclusive charged hadrons at midrapidity up to $p_T=4.5$ GeV/$c$. We also present the measurement of $v_2$ for identified $π^{\pm}$ and (anti)protons in central $d$$+$Au collisions, and observe a mass-ordering pattern similar to that seen in heavy ion collisions. These results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations and measurements from $p$$+$Pb at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. The magnitude of the mass-ordering in $d$$+$Au is found to be smaller than that in $p$$+$Pb collisions, which may indicate smaller radial flow in lower energy $d$$+$Au collisions.

The comparisons, which are performed as a function of collision centrality and the mean transverse momentum for pion pairs, indicate strikingly similar patterns for the $d$$+$Au and Au$+$Au systems. They also indicate a linear dependence of R$_{\rm side}$ on the initial transverse geometric size $\bar{R}$, as well as a smaller freeze-out size for the $d$$+$Au system. These patterns point to the important role of final-state rescattering effects in the reaction dynamics of $d$$+$Au collisions.

The nuclear modification factor in the 30\% most central Au$+$Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total $Υ$ state yield relative to the extrapolation from $p$$+$$p$ collision data. The suppression is consistent with measurements made by STAR at RHIC and at higher energies by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the 2$^{\rm nd}$- and 3$^{\rm rd}$-order event plane for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the 2$^{\rm nd}$- and 3$^{\rm rd}$-order event planes. The results for the 2$^{\rm nd}$-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, but not reversed in the final state, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the 3$^{\rm rd}$-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the 3$^{\rm rd}$-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow.

We discuss the effects of gigahertz photon irradiation on a degenerately phosphorous-doped silicon quantum dot, in particular, the creation of voltage offsets on gate leads and the tunneling of one or two electrons via Coulomb blockade lifting at 4.2K. A semi-analytical model is derived that explains the main features observed experimentally. Ultimately both effects may provide an efficient way to optically control and operate electrically isolated structures by microwave pulses. In quantum computing architectures, these results may lead to the use of microwave multiplexing to manipulate quantum states in a multi-qubit configuration.

Measurements of transverse-single-spin asymmetries ($A_{N}$) in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$62.4 and 200 GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC are presented. At midrapidity, $A_{N}$ is measured for neutral pion and eta mesons reconstructed from diphoton decay, and at forward rapidities, neutral pions are measured using both diphotons and electromagnetic clusters. The neutral-pion measurement of $A_{N}$ at midrapidity is consistent with zero with uncertainties a factor of 20 smaller than previous publications, which will lead to improved constraints on the gluon Sivers function. At higher rapidities, where the valence quark distributions are probed, the data exhibit sizable asymmetries. In comparison with previous measurements in this kinematic region, the new data extend the kinematic coverage in $\sqrt{s}$ and $p_T$, and it is found that the asymmetries depend only weakly on $\sqrt{s}$. The origin of the forward $A_{N}$ is presently not understood quantitatively. The extended reach to higher $p_T$ probes the transition between transverse momentum dependent effects at low $p_T$ and multi-parton dynamics at high $p_T$.

We develop quantum dots in a single layered MOS structure using an undoped Si/SiGe wafer. By applying a positive bias on the surface gates, electrons are accumulated in the Si channel. Clear Coulomb diamond and double dot charge stability diagrams are measured. The temporal fluctuation of the current is traced, to which we apply the Fourier transform analysis. The power spectrum of the noise signal is inversely proportional to the frequency, and is different from the inversely quadratic behavior known for quantum dots made in doped wafers. Our results indicate that the source of charge noise for the doped wafers is related to the 2DEG dopant.

These generators also indicate that the back-to-back peak at $Δφ= π$ is dominantly from the leading order contributions (gluon fusion), while higher order processes (flavor excitation and gluon splitting) contribute to the yield at all $Δφ$. We observe a suppression in the pair yield per collision in $d$+Au. We find the pair yield suppression factor for $2.7<Δφ<3.2$ rad is $J_{dA}$ = 0.433 $\pm$ 0.087 (stat) $\pm$ 0.135 (syst), indicating cold nuclear matter modification of $c\bar{c}$ pairs.

The PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured open heavy flavor production in Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV through the measurement of electrons at midrapidity that originate from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom hadrons. In peripheral Cu$+$Cu collisions an enhanced production of electrons is observed relative to $p$$+$$p$ collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. In the transverse momentum range from 1 to 5 GeV/$c$ the nuclear modification factor is $R_{AA}$$\sim$1.4. As the system size increases to more central Cu$+$Cu collisions, the enhancement gradually disappears and turns into a suppression. For $p_T>3$ GeV/$c$, the suppression reaches $R_{AA}$$\sim$0.8 in the most central collisions. The $p_T$ and centrality dependence of $R_{AA}$ in Cu$+$Cu collisions agree quantitatively with $R_{AA}$ in $d+$Au and Au$+$Au collisions, if compared at similar number of participating nucleons $\langle N_{\rm part} \rangle$.

High-energy proton- and deuteron-nucleus collisions provide an excellent tool for studying a wide array of physics effects, including modifications of parton distribution functions in nuclei, gluon saturation, and color neutralization and hadronization in a nuclear environment, among others. All of these effects are expected to have a significant dependence on the size of the nuclear target and the impact parameter of the collision, also known as the collision centrality. In this article, we detail a method for determining centrality classes in p(d)+A collisions via cuts on the multiplicity at backward rapidity (i.e., the nucleus-going direction) and for determining systematic uncertainties in this procedure. For d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV we find that the connection to geometry is confirmed by measuring the fraction of events in which a neutron from the deuteron does not interact with the nucleus. As an application, we consider the nuclear modification factors R_{p(d)+A}, for which there is a potential bias in the measured centrality dependent yields due to auto-correlations between the process of interest and the backward rapidity multiplicity. We determine the bias correction factor within this framework. This method is further tested using the HIJING Monte Carlo generator. We find that for d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV, these bias corrections are small and vary by less than 5% (10%) up to p_T = 10 (20) GeV. In contrast, for p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02 TeV we find these bias factors are an order of magnitude larger and strongly p_T dependent, likely due to the larger effect of multi-parton interactions.
